Clinic: You must attend all three days of clinic in order to tryout (unless there are extreme circumstances, which will be addressed at that time). This is required by the Constitution. Do not wear any jewelry, and do not chew gum. We are not responsible for personal belongings. Wear comfortable clothes and good athletic shoes. T-shirt must cover sports bra and shorts must be appropriate length. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a lowering of your tryout score. Please be sure to have someone pick you up at 5:00 p.m. sharp. D. Tryouts: Tryouts will include a cheer, chant, toe touch, alternate jump, tumbling, and dance. Scores will include the above mentioned components along with a clinic score composed of only objective criteria to include clinic requirements (no jewelry, no gum, hair up, proper clothing, punctuality, cooperation, following directions, and being picked up on time). Tryouts will be closed to the public. Candidates must leave after their group finishes. Tryout attire will be blue shorts, a plain white (non-see through) shirt, athletic shoes, and white socks. No apparel of any kind which would indicate that you have been a cheerleader before is allowed at tryouts. You may wear a solid red, white, or blue hair ribbon. The candidate must wear her hair up and out of her face. Based on the judges scores, the sponsor(s) will set the size and grade levels of each squad, which may differ from year to year. The OMMS cheerleaders will be posted on the OMMS Cheerleading Blog. Any girl who does not attend at least half the school day (four class periods) will forfeit eligibility. E. Responsibilities: Please note the cheerleader responsibilities and conduct in the Cheerleading Constitution, Cheer Code of Conduct, Shelby County Cheer Constitution. If you do not feel that you can abide by these rules, please do not try out. Cheerleading lasts from tryouts in February through the end of basketball season in February the next year. There is little time off. Summer vacation must be planned around cheerleader camp and practice schedule. It will require a lot of time, effort, and sacrifice on your part. No cheerleader may miss the summer camp unless there is a family emergency of which coaches must be notified. 1

Oak Mountain Middle School Cheerleading Constitution PURPOSE OF CHEERLEADING 1. To support the athletics of the school. 2. To set examples of good character and sportsmanship. 3. To promote good relations with the public and build positive relationships with other schools. 4. To promote good sportsmanship and spirit. ATTENDANCE Every cheerleader is expected to be at ALL practices, camp, fundraisers, and scheduled events. When even one member misses a practice or a game, it takes away from the entire squad. Problems with attendance can be avoided by each member understanding and following the guidelines listed below: 1. ALL absences from practices or games MUST be excused and submitted to the sponsor(s) in advance. Written notice is required no later than the day of the absence. If you are sick, you must let the sponsor(s) know before a game or practice begins. Cheerleaders practice every Monday and Wednesday after school in the cafeteria. 2. If a cheerleader is absent from the practice preceding a game, her participation in the game will be left to the sponsor s discretion. In the case of non-participation, the cheerleader must dress out and still attend the game. 3. Excused absences are allowed only in cases of illness or family emergency. Absences for any other reason will be excused ONLY AT THE SPONSOR S DISCRETION. Doctor/Dentist appointments are excused only in the event of an unforeseen emergency. 4. A member must attend school half a day to perform on that day (checked in no later than 11:30; checked out no earlier than 11:30). 5. Members are expected to be on time for all functions and stay for the entire length of the functions. Chronic tardies or requests to leave early will be treated like an unexcused absence. Every third tardy is equal to one unexcused absence as every third early dismissal is equal to one unexcused absence. 6. Attendance at camp and all other summer practices are MANDATORY. 7. If you miss a school sporting event to participate in a non-school related sporting event or practice, this will be considered the same as quitting a team and you will forfeit eligibility for one year. *There is no reason for an unexcused absence. Discipline for this will be restriction from cheering for a period of time. RESPONSIBLITIES OF CHEERLEADERS 1. To cheer for any athletic event as required by school authorities. 2. To conduct the tryout clinic in the spring (8 th graders) 3. To organize, set up, and clean up after pep rallies. 4. To attend activities as necessary to promote school pride and spirit. 5. To attend fundraisers. INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITES 1. Be responsible for your own possessions. Do not ask or expect someone else to keep up with your things and DO NOT borrow any issued equipment or issued uniform pieces from another cheerleader. 2. NEVER argue with the sponsor(s) or team member. If you have a problem, arrange to discuss it in private with your sponsor(s). 3

3. Inform parents of all information regarding cheerleading. 4. Bring all progress reports and report cards to your sponsor(s) at the next scheduled practice or performance. 5. Get any absences excused ahead of time. 6. Follow all squad, school, and county rules. 7. Encourage each other! CHEERLEADING CONDUCT Any discipline problems will be handled by the sponsor(s) or principal. Serious infractions may result in suspension or expulsion from the squad. The following is a list of possible infractions: 1. Failure to pay cheerleading debts within the required time limits 2. Violation of the system s policy regarding alcohol, smoking, drugs, or any other substance abuse (1 st offense will result in immediate dismissal from the squad) 3. Suspension from school, in or out, for any reason 4. Conviction of a crime 5. Conduct unbecoming of a representative of Oak Mountain Middle School and deemed inappropriate by the sponsor(s) 6. Cheating (giving or receiving help) during tryouts 7. Failure to follow rules of the classroom, school, squad, or the Shelby County Code of Conduct 8. Failure to show a discipline notice to the sponsor(s) *While on a disciplinary suspension, a member may not participate in any squad functions or represent the squad in any way, but will still attend all practices during benching period. If a cheerleader gets more than two suspensions, it will result in immediate expulsion. GRADES Each cheerleader must maintain an overall average of at least 70 in 5 core subjects. Any cheerleader who fails to do so will be on academic probation until the grade improves and will be restricted from performing during a probationary period. A second failure to maintain the appropriate average will result in removal from the squad for the remainder of the cheer season. Cheerleaders should bring all progress reports and report cards to sponsor(s) for checking at the next scheduled practice. UNIFORMS 1. Members must rent uniforms as directed by the sponsor(s). 2. At the end of the season, the cheerleaders must turn in the rented uniforms and supplies issued by the sponsor(s). Any necessary repair or replacement cost of these items will be the parents responsibility. TRANSPORTATION Transportation to all athletic events is the parents responsibility. Pick up from practices and performances must be prompt. SQUAD SIZE AND SEASON The cheer season extends from tryout to tryout. Based on the judges scores, the sponsor(s) will set the size of each squad, which may differ from year to year. 4

NOT PERFORMING The sponsor(s) has the authority to withhold any member at any time from cheering at a game or performance. This responsibility is not taken lightly and is the last option. The cooperation and trust of the team members and parents that the sponsor(s) will always have the team s best interest in mind is helpful. Some of the most common reasons for being benched are: 1. Grades 2. Discipline notices 3. Missing practices 4. Display of poor sportsmanship 5. Failure to have complete uniform and equipment at games and performances 6. Failure to follow school rules or being uncooperative or disrespectful to teachers 7. Physical or verbal fighting with squad members, sponsor(s), or peers 8. Failure to execute request made by sponsor(s) 9. A member cannot execute steps or movements in the manner in which they were intended. The team s overall skill level will not be lowered to compensate for one or two team members who do not have the dance/cheer perfected. IT IS THE SPONSOR S RIGHT TO BENCH A GIRL DURING A GAME OR PERFORMANCE DUE TO GRADES, BEHAVIOR, ATTITUDE, POOR ATTENDANCE, LACK OF EFFORT, POOR PERFORMANCE, OR FOR ANY OTHER REASON DEEMED APPROPRIATE BY THE SPONSOR(S). PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS Practice is a time to work. You want your squad to be the best that it can be, and having safe and effective practices will assure that. Make a habit of being mature, quiet and cooperative at all times. The following rules are expected of each Cheerleader: 1. Dress out! Wear the appropriate practice uniform, including shoes and socks. 2. Be on time. Cheerleading practice starts promptly at 3:15. All cheerleaders are responsible for moving tables, cleaning the area, having the team ready, and stretching the team. 3. No talking or laughing while a sponsor(s) is speaking, while another cheerleader is speaking, during a dance, cheer, or during stretching. 4. No horse playing or wasting time at any point during practice. 5. No criticizing others for ANY reason. If you are asked to provide your criticism, be sure it is constructive and positive. 6. Take suggestions like a good sport. If someone or the sponsor(s) constructively suggests something to you, be polite and say thanks. 7. Always wear your hair up and out of your face. 8. NO jewelry is to be worn during practices. This includes rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, even if they are stud earrings. 9. Always bring any necessary equipment to practice. 10. No chewing gum. 11. ALWAYS do your best and be proud of your accomplishments. 12. Be responsible for your belongings. All items/equipment must be put up and area must be clean before leaving. 13. Practices are closed. Parents must wait outside the school building. 5

14. As long as you are unable to participate in Physical Education, you will not be allowed to participate in any after school sport related activity. This means no practice, games, or try-outs. GAME AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Games are an opportunity to show off all our hard work. You want the team to look its best, so make a habit of always being mature, quiet and cooperative at all times. The following rules are expected of each Cheerleader: 1. Be in dress code. All cheerleaders must arrive at school in their game-day shirt, jeans and hair up with ribbon, and remain in dress code for the duration of the day. 2. Arrive on time! During home games, 7 th graders will walk with sponsor(s) to the field to get ready to cheer. 8 th graders should arrive to the field by 6:00. When they arrive, they must sit by the 7 th grade girls. They may not walk around, socialize, or sit in the stands! During away games, parents are responsible for getting their daughter to the game. 7 th graders should arrive by 4:30 and 8 th graders should arrive by 6: Restroom breaks are only allowed before the game and after the halftime performance. 4. Remember all of your equipment. All cheerleaders are responsible for wearing the appropriate uniform and bringing the appropriate equipment to games and performance. Cheerleaders who are not dressed in the correct uniform or who are missing the proper equipment will sit out the game or performance. (this includes correct hair ribbons and socks) 5. The cheerleaders are responsible for bringing their own water to the game. They may not drink any sodas or eat during the football or basketball games. 6. Be responsible for all your belongings. The sponsor(s) will not be responsible for holding items during the game or performance. Cheerleaders are expected to gather all items/equipment and clean area before leaving. 7. NO jewelry or distracting fingernail polish is to be worn during a game or performance. This includes rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, even if they are stud earrings. 8. NO eating or chewing gum. 6
