Tel: queensgateprimary.co.uk Friday 18th May 2018 Issue Save the Date for our Summer Fair Dear Parents and Carers, Standard Assessment Tests We are very proud of our Year 6 children who have coped with their SATs in an upbeat and happy way. The exams are now complete for Year 6. They will be continuing to work hard particularly with their writing, which is not assessed until later in the term. Year 2 will be doing their SATs next week. Year 4 Year 4 had great fun and learnt lots of new skills at camp. They linked their Habitat work with the Visit. See pages 4 & 5 for reports and more photos. PTFA Meeting Our next PTFA meeting is on Monday 21 st May at 6pm at The Lifeboat. The meeting will be used to plan our Summer Fair please come along if you can. Building Update After a long gap since I told you we may be having a new building the Education Funding Agency have once again been in touch with me and we are meeting next week. I will keep you posted. NSPCC Next Friday 25 th May we have invited the NSPCC to come and work with us. They will be running both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 assemblies and carrying our workshops with both Years 5 and 6. (Tianna, Felix, George, Caitlyn, Lily-May C, Finn, Owen, Rio, Lincoln, Esmae, Tony, Lexi, Buddy, Riley N) This week Reception went to Sandown. We looked at the different dinosaur footprints and worked out which dinosaurs were the biggest, smallest, fastest and vegetarians! Then we went onto the beach and made our own dinosaur footprints.

3 YEAR 2 OUT & ABOUT LOCAL AREA On Wednesday Year 2 went to the cemetery with Out & About. We took rubbings of the tree bark and looked at the different patterns. It was very interesting. Ashton & Sophie 2BC YEAR 5 OUT & ABOUT SANDOWN For Out & About Year 5 went to Sandown beach and we went to see the buildings that have been knocked down (the old arcade and Bogeys Disco!) We then had to draw a design of what we thought Sandown needed. After that we got to play on the beach for a little bit. Amy G

4 Orienteering and Jacobs Ladder Orienteering was very fun we had to use a map to help us navigate around PGL. We had to find numbers placed all around. My team were able to find four numbers in total. It was very fun! Jacobs ladder was very scary only a few people were able to make it to the top but I was close. With a little help, my friend Abbie was able to make it to the top. We did the ropes too. Callum 4LM Survival skills Survival was really fun because we had to make a tent. We were only given sticks, string, cover and then had to build our own. We tied the string to a tree to make it as secure as we could. We also carved a stick to a point and we built a fire with a little tin and some cotton wool which we had to light. Ellenie 4PG Archery The best bit was archery. The hardest part was putting on the arm protector, and you had to put it on your opposite arm. Then you picked up an arrow and let it rest against the bunny ears. Then you put the Knock in between the golden nuggets. After that you had to pull the string back, look through the hole and aim at the target. It was really hard. George 4PG Archery and Campfire On Monday after dinner we all went to a campfire and sang lots of songs. It was very fun I loved it and we danced to some of the songs. My favourite song was Balken Strickter, its funny when we sang it!! On Tuesday I did archery and Mrs Merwood kept getting a bullseye, I think I still did good though. After that before our lesson was over we played a game where if your arrow hit the blue ring you would be going on a holiday with Justin Bieber, but if you hit the red or the gold ring you would go on holiday with Drake! Or Donald Trump if you hit the white or black ring! By Ella Lewis

5 PGL Low Ropes and Sensory Trail I liked the Low Ropes because you had to work as a team. Our team leader, called Owen, said we could play a game of the Floor is Lava. One person had to balance across a wobbly metal line whilst gripping on ropes. The others were Ninja Squirrels and helped if the person fell off by pushing them back up. My favourite activity was Sensory Trail. It was fun because you couldn t see where you were going and I kept on bashing into things! In the end my shoes were all muddy! Isaac Yarf-Abbasi CAMP PGL SPLASH AND CABINS On Tuesday night we did activities called Splash! It was a really fun to play games and at the end we had to make a safe box for a water balloon to be chucked on the floor and we all got wet because our team leaders, Corny and Sam, threw them at us. When we all got into our cabins we were so happy and excited there were 4 in each room. It had a bathroom with a shower and 2 bunk beds, there was a wardrobe with 6 little shelves and a big bit with hangers. Keira 4LM Canoeing and the best food ever! On Tuesday most of us did canoeing. It was really fun but really hard to do it because it was really rough and stiff. I was in a canoe with Frankie, Jake and Kayla. Canoeing was my favourite we got stuck because it turned really shallow and I had to push it out! At the end we did a race and the canoe fell over! FOOD! The food was really nice I had chicken nuggets and chips and you could keep going up to the salad bar it was all very nice. Ryleigh W.

6 QUEENSGATE SPORT ROUNDUP Cricket Success On Friday, the U-11 Open cricket team played their round robin fixtures. Against Holy Cross, the team secured a 29 run win, against Gurnard, a 45 run win and against Cowes, a 22 run win was achieved. So Queensgate won their group and qualify for the knockout quarter finals. Well done. Top Tennis Queensgate hosted the other Cowes schools in this annual tournament altogether there were 14 teams. After a nervous start, the Queensgate teams swung into action and in the end the one team finished 6 th and the other equal 2 nd, just missing out on going to the finals on a countback score but a fantastic effort. On Wednesday, the fourth session of the Year 5 waterborne club took place at UKSA. The group took part in keel boat sailing, in ideal conditions. As usual, it was great fun and greatly enjoyed by all. Summer Fair Our Summer Fair is on Saturday 9 th June from 11 am to 2 pm. Please hold this date and come and join in the fun. We will be having a bouncy castle, raffle, bottle tombola, café, cake stall, BBQ, sand art, teddies on a string and face paints. In the central arena there will be samba music, Irish dancing and a dog show (please see next page for more details of the dog show.) In addition next week I will be giving Year 6 1 each with the aim of making money from it. They may decide to work alone or they may decide to join up with friends. In previous years some children have made cakes, run stalls or done jobs. The child or children who make the most money will receive a prize. The children will be able to tell you more about this next week. Outstanding Money. Please can all monies due in for dinners, trips, breakfast club be paid into the office by the morning of Wednesday 23rd May. This is because it is the end of half term and we do not hold any money on site during the holiday. Please can you also collect any Walk the Wight sponsorship money too. Many thanks Whole school attendance so far is 96.84% Remember that good attendance will help your child to succeed at school. This week 6TS & 5RA achieved 100% attendance! Well done!
