YMCA EPPING April 2018
Seniors Festival During April YMCA Epping celebrated the Seniors Festival with great Pryme Active classes, a morning tea and two very informative talks. It was great to see so many familiar faces as well as some new ones and it was even better to hear how good exercise is for both physical and mental health. Physiotherapist, Stephen Borg, focused on the importance of joint health, saying that maintaining muscle strength is an important element to healthy joints. He added that body weight resistance exercises such as push ups and sit ups are beneficial, but it is important to know your limits. Bonnie Tran, from the Brain & Mind Research Institute reinforced the benefits of exercise for brain health, stating that older people who work out three more times a week have improved memory, less brain shrinkage and 32-40% reduction in the risk of developing dementia. WOW Work Out of the Week Are you looking to mix up your workout routine? Why don t you try out our new workouts of the week? Each week we will put a new workout on the whiteboard that is designed to be both challenging and good fun.
Basketball casual shoot around The stadium is now available for casual basketball shoot around on Sunday afternoons. Sunday 3-6pm $5 per person per session No bookings necessary Congratulations Congratulations to the winners of our Easter colouring competition. Don t forget to come in and collect your prize. Oval Opening On Saturday 24 th March YMCA Epping participated in the long awaited opening of West Epping Park. The event was well attended, with local residents impressed by the great new outdoor facilities. YMCA Epping kept visitors to the park busy by offering free outdoor fitness classes, a super gymnastics circuit as well as a Karate demonstration and a badminton tournament.
Parking The opening of West Epping Oval has delivered two parking areas with space for over 140 vehicles. One can be accessed from Grant Cl (off Midson rd) and the other can be accessed from either Mountain St or Downing St (both off Ray Rd). Both these carparks are a short, easy walk to the Y. Gymnasts of the Week YMCA Epping s Kindergym, Colours and Stage classes are all about teaching our young gymnasts skills for life. One of those skills is working hard and doing your best. To recognise this, we have recently started presenting gymnast of the week awards. These awards are presented to gymnasts that have worked hard in class and have improved their skills. Congratulations to all our recent winners.
James is Going to Nationals! Our very own levels coach James Ogilvie has qualified for the Australian Gymnastics Championships to be held in Melbourne 21 May to 4 June 2018! This follows on from a stellar performance at the Senior State Championships on April at the Sydney Gymnastic Centre where he finished with an all round bronze medal. James results reflect a lot of hard work and great performances in lead up competitions, says coach Andrew Fu. James finished first on vault, first on P Bars and second on floor. A big congratulations to James. Keep up the amazing work and we look forward to hearing how you go in the Nationals! Board visit We were treated to a special visit by two of our very own YMCA Board members on Friday 20 th. Both Nicole and Frances-Anne were treated to a very hands on visit, seeing how our YMCA Ninjas program is run! Our little Ninjas got to show off their skills for a special audience and did not disappoint! Games Day To celebrate the 2018 Commonwealth Games YMCA Epping hosted a games day on Sunday 8 th April. Gymnastics and LTP members and their friends enjoyed some friendly competition in our gymnastics rooms. The children showed off team spirit, competing in single, partner and team races to the cheers and shouts of their friends. Their speed, strength, power and reflexes were put to the test, with all children putting in their best effort. We finished the day with some hungry tummies to feed that were satisfied a delicious, hard earned BBQ. Well done to all our athletes!
Fast 5 YMCA Epping has kicked off the 2018 Autumn competition season with the introduction of Fast 5 Netball. Fast 5 Netball is a faster and less congested form of regular netball. The game offers some new and exciting twists on the regular game such as shorter quarters, super shots and power plays. Our competition is open to men and women and is played on Wednesday nights. The winter competition will be beginning in June so please let us know it if you want to join in! Games Week In the final week of Term 1, our Learn to Play athletes participated in a week for fun and games to celebrate the Commonwealth Games. During this week the usual skills and drills were replaced with competitive but fun games designed to enhance abilities and celebrate a successful Australian Commonwealth Games! Some of the winners of our Games Week include Jimmy Zhang, Jeffery Chen, Huon Groth, Leo Song, Amy Goldstiver, and Gabriel Cheung. Congratulations to our little athletes! Creche Did you know that crèche ten packs are now available. At $35 that is a saving of 22% over the ten weeks.
Congratulations Morag On Wednesday 4 th April our beautiful Customer Service Officer, Morag tied the knot at a beautiful and intimate ceremony at Lilianfels in the Blue Mountains. We wish her and her husband David all the best. Introducing Lawrence We have recently welcomed a new Customer Service Officer - Lawrence Gullifer. Lawrence is in his final year studying Applied Finance at Macquarie University and is also completing Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness. He is a keen gym goer and is training to compete in a men s physique show in the next 12 months.
