2 January 29, 2016 Volume 55, Number 5 Meet a Few Staff Members Brandi Weese grew up in Missouri but graduated from Cordell High School before moving to Burns Flat. She is a 4 th and 5 th grade teacher s aide and this is her first year doing so. She is married with 3 kids, who all attend Burns Flat-Dill City Schools. Their names are Jordan, Mykenzee, and Dakoda. Her hobbies include watching her children play sports, going to the lake, and traveling for Jordan s tournaments. Crystal Gearhart is a 1 st and 2 nd grade teacher s aide at Will Rogers Elementary School. Mrs. Gearhart moved to Tennessee when she was only 10 years old. She attended Macon County High School in Tennessee. She moved to Oklahoma in She is one of three children. She has a sister and a brother. She is married to Scott Gearhart and has one daughter, Chloe, who attends Will Rogers Elementary. When she s not helping with the 1 st and 2 nd grade, she likes to spend her time crocheting and hanging out with her friends and family. She wants everyone in Burns Flat to know that she loves working at Will Rogers Elementary School. Scott Gearhart is a janitor at Will Rogers Elementary and has been for a year and a half. Before settling in Burns Flat in 2009 to help take care of his grandparents, he lived in Macon County, Tennessee and attended Red Boiling Springs High School. He is married to Crystal Gearhart and has a daughter named Chloe that attends Will Rogers Elementary. His favorite activities include drawing, painting, fixing things, gaming, and playing on the computer. He is an excellent artist and is the person that did the wonderful mural on the playground by the library windows. Gayla Linn is the library assistant for the Will Rogers Elementary School and has been working at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools for almost 17 years. Mrs. Linn grew up and attended school in Cordell. She moved to Dill City when she married her husband, Jimmy and has been living there for the last 34 years. She has two sons, named Ryan and Eric. Ryan graduated from BF-DC in 2001 and attended Southeastern and graduated in He is the personal pilot for Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Ryan, his wife Sara, and their 20 month old son Brayden live in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Eric graduated from BF-DC in 2005 and attended UCO and graduated in 2009 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He is a sales representative for Mobile Mini. Eric, his wife Chelsea, and their two children, Brody who is 3½ and Landri who is 15 months old, live in Yukon. In her free time, Mrs. Linn tries to learn how to crochet, read, and watch old movies and television shows. She says that she just likes to do her job and go home and relax. She loves to travel with her husband when possible. They enjoy cruises and have been on several. Linda Bland has lived in California, England, Scotland, Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada with her father who was in the Air Force before she ended up in Burns Flat her sophomore year. She graduated from BF-DC High School. She is the school nurse at Will Rogers Elementary and has been there for two years. She was recently remarried and has nine children, 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Her hobbies include crafts, sewing, gardening, reading, and taking walks. She has been a nurse for a total of 9 years and has loved every minute of it. Before becoming a nurse, she was known as Miss Linda and provided child care at the Merry-Go- Round Day Care in Burns Flat for 30 years. Lori Gearhart has been a custodian for a year at Will Rogers Elementary. Before moving to Burns Flat she lived in Tennessee. When she s not working, she enjoys crocheting and helping others. Taisha Beasterfeld has been working at Will Rogers Elementary School as a para professional for the Co-op for 5 years. Before living in Oklahoma she lived in Burton, Michigan, graduated from Bendle Sr. High then went on to attend Baker College in Flint, Michigan. Her husband s name is Eric Beasterfeld and together they have 4 children: Corbin, a senior at Elk City High School, Kaitlyn, a student at Western College in Altus, Shauney, an 8 th grader at BF-DC, and Kameryn, a 3 rd grader at Will Rogers Elementary School. When she s not busy working, she enjoys soccer, watching movies, hanging out with her children, and watching the ID Channel on television. She wants the people at BF-DC to know that she loves working here and would like to thank everyone for all their time and effort with her bake sale. She says she feels amazing after her surgery and is so happy to be able to speak again. Vickie Reeves has been working at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools for 26 years. This is her first year as an Administrative Assistant. She grew up in San Antonio, Texas and went to the San Antonio Community College and also attended SWOSU. She has been married for 33 years and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading and watching her grandchildren. She wants people to know that although she grew up in Texas, Burns Flat is her home. Tonia Knight is a nutrition/ teacher s aide at Will Rogers Elementary and has been for two years. She attended for grades K-12. She and her husband Trenton have one daughter named Rayleigh and one son on the way. Her family is very close and they have a lot of fun times together, especially when they go golfing. Family is #1 in her life. Her hobby apart from spending time with her family is being a mother to her children. She thinks it is a true blessing to work at the school she attended and she loves working with the students. December HS Student of the Month Josh Wilmoth is a junior at BF-DC Schools. His parents are Denise and Michael Wilmoth. He is involved in Future Farmers of America and attends the Western Technology Center in Burns Flat. He enjoys helping Mr. Mitchell the BF- DC Technology Director. His plan for the future is to be a Diesel Technician. His fondest memory is of his little brother being born. Page 2 Senior Eagles of December Katy Horne is a senior at BF-DC Schools. Her parent is Ann Walker and her grandparent is Jean Walker. She has 4 siblings; John Morris, Tiffany Morris, Michael Morris, and Brandon Horne. She is involved in FCCLA, and the Special Olympics. She has won the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the Special Olympic Competition; placed second at the FCCLA regional competition for table setting; and won the Outstanding Student in Oklahoma History and Civics award. She has completed community service by helping with the Children s Miracle Network Porker Fun Run. Her future plans are to attend the Western Technology Center in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. Her fondest school memories are of taking care of the baby for her home economics class. Chandler Hoffman is a senior at BF-DC Schools. His parents are Douglas and Roudie Harbert. He has a brother, Brandon Harbert and a sister Gracie Harbert. He attended Army Basic Combat Training during the summer of 2015 where he received the Perfect Attitude and Attendance Award, became SP2 certified, and ranked up to an E2. He loves to help other people and is always available if anyone needs anything. He plans to attend SWOSU for a medical related degree and eventual switch to active duty in the Army. 3 January 29, 2016 Volume 55, Number 5 Page 3 Star Students back row: Alexis Greene, Jolene Thompson, Christopher Carter, Evan Donaldson, and Jamie Prater. 4th and 5th Science The Will Roger Elementary 4th and 5th grade science students returned from Christmas break ready to conserve natural resources. The students are now exploring the rock and water cycle. This world is precious and everyone needs to help SAVE THE EARTH by knowing how to protect it. Ms. Howes s Class Celebrates 100th Day of School Ms. Howes class celebrated the 100th day of school by counting heads or tails 100 times with tally marks. Along with this they graphed 100 M&Ms by color on a chart, and made 100 fingerprints. The 2nd grade students wrote about the 100th day of school, and enjoyed snacks. The students also made some creative shirts. Will Rogers Holds Spelling Bee The 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade students competed in the school spelling bee on January 13th. Kaiden Willson won 1st place and Ryling Hall won second place. Both of the students are from Mrs. Matuszewski classroom. The 1st and 2nd grade students competed in the spelling bee on January 14th. Korbin Perriman won 1st place and Jamee Prater won 2nd place. Korbin is from Ms. Howes classroom and Jamee is from Ms. Hines classroom. Kindergarten and T1 Christmas Music Program Middle: Chloe Heine, Ben Sharp, Ashley Parker, Isiah Arvizu Front : Oliva Russell, Joseph Plaza, Elizabeth Dye, Adian Miller and Rhyan Garcia Tucker Reeve, and Cash Steffes Third Grade to Perform Their February Favorites The third grade will be preforming their February Favorites on Tuesday February 2nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Will Rogers Gymnasium. All of the students family and friends are invited to come hear the songs of patriotism, ground hog s day, Valentine s Day, and Black History Month!

4 January 29, 2016 Volume 55, Number 5 Page 4 Congratulations to Grace Schneberger for placing 1st in state, for the Red Ribbon Week Essay Contest. She will go to OKC on February 29th for the awards presentation. 4-H Participates in Speech Contest The Burns Flat-Dill City 4-H members participated in the Washita County 4-H Speech Contest on January 20 th. Jaron Mason presented a power point on western Oklahoma wildlife identification and placed 1 st. Jordan Mason and Makia Maxey presented a food demonstration on peanut butter cornflake cookies and placed 1 st. History Day Students Working on Projects The two groups of History Day participants, Ryne Garrison & Lorsa Hughes and Jake Mooney & Jearon Mason, are finishing up their group projects in time for the District History Day Competition at Weatherford during March. Both groups will be competing in two different categories. The first group doing a poster board presentation over Oklahoma native, Tom Stafford, and the second group creating a website to showcase the life of Nelson Mandela. Band and Vocal News The BF-DC Band and Vocal departments have district contests approaching. These contests include solos and ensembles, and will be held at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford Oklahoma. The vocal students will be competing on February 13 th while the band students will be competing February 20 th. Some students from the vocal program were fortunate enough to try out, and be accepted into the Western Oklahoma Honor Choir. The Junior High Mixed Honor Choir was headed by guest conductor Jeanine Gully. The students that tried out and were accepted into the choir were: Marcie Diggs, daughter of Billy and Roberta Diggs; Melody Julian, daughter of Rick and Diana Copeland; Skyler Raspon, 9th Grade News 6th Grade News 7th Grade News 8th Grade News The 9 th grade students at Burns Flat-Dill City schools are learning how to multiply polynomials in their math classes. They are studying thermal energy and how it works in science. The freshman are reading the book Of Mice and Men in their English class. In civics the freshman are working on vocabulary from chapter three. Junior News In English, the juniors have been listening to and doing questions and vocab over the book Narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, written by Douglass himself. They had a test over vocabulary Monday, January 25 th. In American History, they have been doing the questions at the end of each section. Senior News The Senior Class finished selling popcorn for their fundraiser that started last year, making over $1000 dollars in profit, part of which goes to funding the After Prom Party and other activities. daughter of Valerie Harper; and Wally Powers, son of Kyle and Jackie Powers. These students also have their personal favorite songs of the honor choir; Melody Julian with Jingle Bell, Wally Powers with America the Beautiful, and Skyler Raspon and Marcie Diggs with Exsultate justi in Dominio. The Junior High Treble Choir was headed by guest conductor Stephanie Abell with only one student trying out and being accepted. This student was Makia Maxie, daughter of Jason and Tammy Maxie. Makia Maxie s favorite song of the honor choir was One Song at a Time. The BF-DC sixth graders are just finishing adjectives in their English classes. In reading they are reading a book called Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. The 6 th graders are learning about electricity and magnesium in science. The social studies classes are studying the United States and Canada and in math the students are learning how to multiply fractions. Spanish Club News The Spanish Club is selling BesoGrams for Valentine s Day. Starting January 28 th and ending February 10 th, anyone can go to a Spanish Club member and buy one for $1, with the actual BesoGrams being distributed on February 12 th. The funds will go to the Spanish Club for their yearly trip and production of Boo Bags for next school year. FCCLA News The cookbooks created by FCCLA are at the press and should arrive in a few weeks. All members have a week to sell the required amount of cookbooks to be able to attend the state convention. Mrs. Lyles plans on having a meeting but has not yet decided on the date. The Burns Flat-Dill City FFA chapter was selected for a visit on the Oklahoma FFA annual Goodwill Tour. Oklahoma State FFA Officers visit about 60 of the 360 FFA chapters in Oklahoma. The BF-DC Chapter was selected to serve lunch for the members and guests. The state officers talked to the Burns Flat-Dill The seventh students at BF-DC Schools are learning about East Asia in their geography classes. In science they are finishing a unit about Newton s Laws of Motion and starting to study life science. The 7 th graders are working on percents in math. In English they are studying subject verb agreements and working on their Alpha Plus Testing. Student Council News On January 12 th the Stu- Co held their second BF-DC blood drive. Forty-four signed up for donations with thirty-three people being able to donate. All donations were given in Mr. Hughes name. He will receive credit for all the donations made to him. The last blood drive of the school year is on March 30 th from 8:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Please come and donate on that date. Bryan Cormier FCA News Fellowship of Christian Athletes members held a meeting on January 21 st. They will be going to an Oklahoma City Dodgers game on May 17 th. May 17 th will be the first day of semester tests, members have to be EXEMPT to be able to attend the game. Each students school attendance must be at 85%. The cost for the Dodgers game is $14, the money is due by March 4 th to Mrs. Lyles. Members will need to bring money to eat. Colleen Bennett FCA Reporter City chapter about stepping outside of their comfort zones. Good things only happen when risks are taken and people become uncomfortable, they shared that with the members. Hosting the state officers was an honor and learning from them really benefits our chapter and develops our members into better The eighth graders are finishing chapter eight covering Thomas Jefferson in their U.S. history class. In math they are starting a geometry unit. In English they are working on subject verb agreements, writing, and literary genre. In science classes the eight graders are studying the history of the Earth. Academic News The High School Academic Team played in the Area Tournament, losing to Mooreland with a score of , meaning they are out of the running for the State Championship. The 8 th Grade Academic Team placed 3 rd at the Firebird Tournament at Indiahoma on January 19 th, ending their season with a win/loss record of 4/3. The 7 th grade Academic team qualified for Area by placing 1 st at the regional tournament. They went to Area on January 29 th and competing against students on the junior high level, won 1 st place. They will be going to the state level Challenge of Champions on February 27 th. The 6 th grade Academic team placed 1 st in districts, heading to regionals on February 3 rd. All of the teams will head to the OGPAC Awards Banquet, being held in Thomas on Monday January 15 th. Alexa Benedict will receive the award for Junior High MVP, and Ryne Garrison will receive the High School MVP award. BF-DC FFA Host State FFA Officers on Goodwill Tour individuals, said Ms. Kliewer. Sixty five BF-DC FFA members attended the meeting and four of the eight State Officers shared information with them. Overall, the members felt it was a great learning experience and were very thankful for the opportunity to host the tour.

6 January 29, 2016 BF-DC High School Basketball The BF-DC high school basketball teams have been very busy since Christmas break. They have played in two tournaments and played 5 regular season games each. The Lady Eagles played three games in the Seiling Tournament. They lost two of the games to Seiling and Cimarron but won against Drummond with a score of 40 to 27. The ladies played two games in the West Central Tournament. They played Hydro-Eakly losing 24 to 61 and they played Thomas losing 36 to 62. The girls have also played 5 regular season games since the break. Sadly they did not win any of these games. Coach Kauk said This is a building season. The girls are working hard and no matter what, they play from the jump ball to the end of the game, never quitting. The score does not always reflect who played the hardest and who has improved the most. The high school boy s team brought home the 3rd place trophy from the Seil- ing Tournament. They played three games winning their first game against Vici 42 to 34. Their second game was a hard fought battle against Texhoma with the Eagles coming up short 55 to 58. The boys played Laverne in their third game and won 57 to 42 taking home the 3rd place trophy. The boys also played in the West Central Tournament. They played a very close hard fought game against Calumet and lost by one with a score of 48 to 49. They came back for their next two games beating Sentinel 58 to 19 and Thomas in another nail biter 41 to 40 bringing home the Consolation Trophy. Cameron Carter was also honored with a spot on the AllTournament Team. The Eagles have played 5 regular season games also winning against Sentinel 63 to33, losing to Sayre 39 to 41, losing to Navajo 59 to 67, winning against Mangum 61 to 47, and beating Hollis at homecoming 55 to 51. Volume 55, Number 5 Page 6 Burns Flat-Dill City Celebrate Basketball Homecoming 2016 Junior High Basketball celebrated basketball homecoming from January 11th through the 15th. The celebration began with 5 days of dressing up to support the Eagle basketball teams and ended with a school dance on Friday January 15th. Homecoming week dressup spirit days were highly supported and enjoyed by the students. Monday was Pajama Day. Tuesday was Trading Places Day, where boys dressed like girls and girls dressed like boys. Wednesday was Dynamic Duo Day and the students dressed like twins. Thursday was Elderly Day and Friday was Red, White, and Blue Day. On Friday at 2:45 there was a pep assembly to get all the students excited and ready for the high school ball games against Mangum. The introduction of the homecoming queen and king candidates began at 6:00 p.m. before the bas- The junior high basketball teams have been working hard since Christmas break. The girls have played 6 games and won 3 of them. In the West Central Tournament they played Arapaho in their first game and lost 28 to 38. They came back in their 2nd game against Sentinel and won 23 to 21. They played Calumet in their 3rd game and won 31 to 20 bringing home the Consolation trophy. The girls have played 3 regular season games losing to Sayre and Hollis but beating Cordell 24 to 21 in a nail biter on January 28th. The junior high boy s teams played hard at the West Central Tournament and won the Consolation trophy. They played three games losing to Arapaho in their first game but beating Sentinel 41 to 15 and Calumet 36 to 32 to bring home the Consolation win. The boys also have played 3 regular season games losing to Sayer and Cordell but beating Hollis 31 to 15. ketball games. The high school candidates were Shaydee Villages escorted by Pearl Holmes, Kelsey Briggs escorted by Chris Clark, and Raven Horn escorted by Max Blankenship. Raven Horn was crowned queen and Max Blankenship was crowned king. Following the ball games there was a great dance in the small gym. The junior high crowned their homecoming king and queen on January 25th before their games against Hollis. The junior high candidates were Kayla Staples escorted by Landon Ringo, Makia Maxey escorted by Donovan Webb, and Grace Schneberger escorted by Caden Murphy. Makia Maxey was crowned queen and Caden Murphy was crowned king. Basketball homecoming week was crowned a success and enjoyed by all.
