OCTOBER 29,1992 Mxed reacton to [????? 'Red Hot' theme by ANASTASA B. CUSTER Staff Edtor "Red Hot and Alve" s not a new alternatve musc band or another ADS beneft, nstead ts the chosen theme for the Marst College yearbook, the Reynard. As wth numerous yearbook themes, "Red Hot and Alve" may connotate many dfferent meanngs. However, the edtor sad the theme reflects lfe at Marst. "We chose the theme "Red Hot and Alve" to capture the sprt here. The face of the school s changng, but we wanted to talk about the people who are changng," sad Barbara Sanchez, a junor majorng n communcaton arts from Staten sland, N.Y. However, not everyone was as enthusastc about the theme or drecton of the yearbook. " thnk t sounds tacky. A yearbook should say goodbye and t doesn't appear to be dong that," sad Andrea Prezott, senor class presdent from Brooklyn, N.Y. Prezott was not alone n her stance about the yearbook theme. ' "t's a theme. t's energetc, vbrant but also bombastc and ostentatous," sad Jonathan Banzaca, a senor majorng n hstory from Orange, Conn. "t's really vague and lacks a specfc route." Also, one student sad he lked the theme, but not for a yearbook. "The theme s a lttle colorful and lke the ttle but don't know f would put t for the theme of a yearbook," sad Tony Uanno, a senor majorng n marketng from Daytona Beach, F. "t's very snappy but t sounds lke porno." Despte some negatve feedback, many people approved of the theme and agreed wth Sanchez. Many students sad the most mportant ssue the. next presdent should be concerned wth s the state of the naton's economy. "Ths country needs some good economc polces that wll solve our current problems," Matt Chetats, a senor from Rngewood, N.J., sad. Chetats, a busness fnance major, sad our country's natonal A defct wll get worse before t gets any better. "Every other ssue compared to the natonal debt s trval," he sad. Kathleen Gralton, a sophomore from Queens, N.Y., sad she wants the next presdent to get nvolved wth creatng new jobs, help small busnesses and focus less on foregn affars and more on the Unted States. ''More money should be used to help out those busnesses facng hard economc tmes as well as ndvduals out of work," she sad. The two major presdental canddates, George Bush and Bll Clnton, have two separate proposed plans concernng the defct and unemployment. Bll Clnton and Al Gore, representng the Democrat party, sad they plan on cuttng the natonal defct by half over the next four years f elected. Clnton sad he wants to rase taxes for the rch as well as reducng defense spendng and put that money nto Amercan jobs. George Bush and Dan Quayle, representng tre Republcan, par-, ty sad they would not rase taxes agan. Bush sad he wants to create. a job program for the young as well as creatng a program that would use ncome tax payments towards the federal defct. Many students expressed concern about both canddates ablty "totx th'eproblemsfacng the naton. Kelly Valentne a junor form East Setauket, N. Y., sad t s tme to gve somebody besdes Bush a" chance. "Bush gave t hs best shot, but thnk we had enough of hm and Ms polces," she sad. Malssa Medna sad Bush accomplshed nothng n the past four years that would warrant hm another four years.. "t would only be a waste of tme v even though you can't put the blame on hs shoulders," the sophomore from the Bronx sad. Medna sad.we do not have a great selecton of canddates, needng to vote for the lesser of two evls. Other students expressed concern over beng- able-to- trust 'Bll Clnton. " don't lke 'hs.past record and the queston over hs draft dodgng. He s always changng hs mnd, t shows a lot about hs character," Ellen Eschbach, a junor from Amena, N.Y., sad. Lke many other students Eschbach sad she lkes what Ross Perot has ' to say but beleves he would be a lost vote. " don't thnk Perot wll make a dfference n the electon because he s so low n the polls," Eschbach sad. " want my vote to make a dfference." Joe Cresctell, ajunor from Staten sland, N.Y.,. sad Perot adds spce to the electon by takng away votes from the other two canddates. mare on North Road: They're here by S.J. RCHARD Edtor Bree Pederson walked nto the Sheahan Hall thrd floor study lounge around 4 a.m. and saw an eere shadow-lke slhouette on the wall n front of her. The shadow then slowly floated across the room and dsappeared nto the corner wthout a sound. Many schools, old buldngs and cemeteres have ghost stores Marst s no dfferent. Students and securty guards weave bzarre, bone-chllng tales of the supernatural, settng scenes as deftly as Stephen Spelberg, sendng shvers racng up and down one's spne wth descrptons seemngly out of a Stephen Kng novel. Manyof these stores center on an actual tragedy n Marst hstory. Lke all hstorcal mutatons, the versons of ths event whch people relate contan shadows of what was reported n the newspapers at the tme. Most of theses stores tend -v revolve around the murder of.shelley Sperlng nearly 18 years ;>ago. Even today ths henous crme as confusng, as some detals n the Poughkeepse Journal and the New York Tmes reman a lttle vague. THE REAL STORY Shelley Sperlng walked to dnner n the Marst College cafetera on the nght of Feb. 18, She dd not lve to eat another meal. Sperlng, a 17-year-old freshman from Mahopac, N.Y., and her roommate Renee Bernard left the cafetera around 6 p.m. that Wednesday and were ntercepted by Lous O. Acevedo and hs.32 calber revolver, accordng the New York Tmes. Acevedo, Sperlng's former boyfrend, was released on $10,000 bal the prevous Frday, Valentne's Day, when he appeared n court facng charges of felony assault for fracturng Sperlng's skull and hand wth a brck on Sept. 29, at the Marst boat house. Acevedo, a 20-year-old Dutchess Communty College student, chas-^ ed Sperlng and her roommate as they raced back nto the cafetera to call securty, the papers Teported. Sperlng, Bernard and a cafetera worker were nsde the Food Servces Offce just off the dnng area when Acevedo entered ard began frng, reports sad. The confuson and chaos that ensued stll cause shock and dsmay. Bernard and the worker apparently fled the offce as a shot was fred at them. The bullet lodged n the door. Three more shots were fred accordng to polce. The autopsy report stated that Sperlng was struck n the sde, the shoulder and the back of the head. Seventy-fve polce offcers were dspatched to the scene, accordng to The Poughkeepse Journal. Sperlng ded before the polce were able to get nto the room where she and Acevedo were. From ths crme many stores were born. Students playng wth Ouja boards have terrfed themselves and created an eere legend. Besdes the floatng shade, Pederson sad she has had other experences. Pederson, ajunor from Ossnng, N.Y., lved on the thrd floor of Sheahan Hall her freshman year the floor Sperlng allegedly lved on. Pederson and her frends heard about the murder durng the Fall and began playng wth a Ouja board. She sad she beleves they contacted Sperlng's sprt and that odd thngs began happenng. Just before the ncdent n the study lounge, Pederson was walkng upstars after playng wth a Ouja board wth some frends on the frst floor. As she clmbed the steps, she heard footsteps behnd her. She turned around but saw no one. Pederson sad she became frghtened and sprnted up the few remanng stars. She sad she stopped at the top to lsten and could stll hear the steady rhythm of footfalls n the empty starwell. She sad she walked nto the hall and was overjoyed to see a lght on n the study lounge. " thought t was odd because nobody ever was n there," sad Pederson, "but was just glad someone was awake." Pederson's relef was short-lved. As she peered nto the room, she sad she notced a werd, slhouet tetype of shadow on the wall n front of her. "All of a sudden the shadow moved," Peterson sad. "t floated across the room and dsappeared nto the corner. t was sort of odd." She sad t s hghly possble that her mnd was playng trcks on her snce t was so late. "Normally, you don't tell people about thngs lke ths," she sad, "because they'll thnk you're crazy." Another former resdent of Sheahan Hall clams that she too had an encounter wth a sprt and asked not to be dentfed, fearng everyone would thnk she was an nsane for tellng her story. Ths communcatons major who lves off campus now was gettng ready for bed around 1 a.m. n the bathroom when she looked up and saw another grl standng behnd her over her rght shoulder. " ddn't hear anyone come n and ddn't recognze her so turned around," she sad. "When dd, there was no one there." She descrbes the face as beng pale and angelc havng a "certan softness" snce the grl seemed to be smlng at her.:" wasn't scared at all," she sad, "even after realzed she had dsappeared: How could anyone be afrad of somethng so serene and pretty?" Ths student sad she does not speculate as to the face's dentty and draws no assocaton to Sperlng. Mke Gordon, now a resdent's assstant n Champagnat Hall, has a Sheahan Hall story too, although ths one has an explanaton: a hoax. Gordon, a junor from Attleboro, Mass., lved on the frst floor of Sheahan Hall and created qute a scare whle playng a trck on a group of people usng a Ouja. He scrawled the words "Beware Shelley" on the bathroom mrror n Noxema when some of the people playng wth the board dscovered the mysterous wrtng were terrfed. "They flpped out," he sad wth a smle. The panc that ensued sent shock waves through the Ouja crew whch prompted the group to break the board n half and burn t, Gordon sad. Gordon sad they drenched the peces wth lghter flud and torched the remans of...see STORES page 8

2 THE CRCLE, OCTOBER 29,1992 Adults consent to some suspenseful acts by JENNFER GANDALONE "Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neghbors Wfe." Well, not unless you have hs permsson. That's the dea behnd Hollywood Pctures "Consentng Adults." Alan J. Pakula drects ths move about love, marrage, sex, and money starrng Kevn Klne and Mary Elzabeth Mastrantono. Klne plays Rchard Parker, a composer who wrtes songs for TV commercals. He has a good job, a lovng wfe (Mastrantono), and a talented young daughter (who s away at school the whole move). Ths s everythng he could possbly want. At least untl some new neghbors enter hs lfe. Kevn Spacey and Rebecca Mller are Eddeand Kay Ots who not only befrend the Parkers, but also play a major part n determnng the course of ther lves. Edde s a fnancal advsor who has a bg house (whch nsde s dark and dreary and remnds^me of a morgue), a prvate plane, ard*;a?boat. The; queston s whether or not he got these thngs n an honestway. Money The Reel Story Jennfer Gandalone s what he uses to convnce Rchard and hs wfe Prsclla that he s an all around nce guy who only wants to be there for them and wll help them n any way possble. Oh really? Key lne: "You want to sleep wth my wfe, but you don't want to get caught." (Or w&rds to that affect). As much as Rchard trys to deny that he s attracted to Kay, he can't fool Edde. Edde knows the truth and admts that he thnks about Prsclla n much the same way. So what does he suggest? How about a lttle wfe-swappng. n the mddle of the nght, '' close to genus: A super lneup of actors by KRAG DEMATTES guess cannot just st here and wrte "t was good, lked t." Everybody wants to know why, what was good, what t was about. But n all honesty, beleve may have gotten n over my head on ths one. "Glengarry Glen Ross" stars some of the best actors wth a hstory of great moves behnd them: Al Pacno, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwn, Ed Harrs, Alan Arkn, Kevn Spacey, and Jonathan Pryce. Davd Mamet (Homcde, House of Games) wrote the ^screenplay, from, the Tony-wtmng-.. Broadway play he wrote as well. The wrtng s fast, the dalogue s faster, and you get so caught up n t that ths hour and forty mnute salesptch seems lke only forty mnutes. Pacno, Lemmon, Harrs, and Arkn are real estate salesmen tryng to con "deadbeats" nto buyng property, and when they start talkng, we lsten as they smooth. ther way nto these peoples' lves. And when these people do not buy, the salesmen get desperate. Davd Mamet has hs own way of revealng a story by not revealng mportant nformaton about the one thng the move revolves, around, whch n ths case are the Glengarry Leads, people nterested n buyng land n Florda. All GREEKS & CLUBS RASE A COOL *1000 NJUSTONEWEEKl PLUS $1000 FOR THE MEMBER WHO CALLS? No oblgaton. No cost You also get a FREE HEADPHONE RADO justforcallng 1^ , Ext 65 throughout the move, we are told about them, how mportant they are. Whoever thought of puttng these actors together s a genus. Crtc's corner Krag DeMattels Alec Baldwn (Hunt for Red; October, Marryng Man) has the shortest yet most powerful role as Blake, the man send from the head offce to delver the leads and a speech, bascally "shape up or shpout." But the way he talks to and acts towards them, you feel sorry for the salesmen. Baldwn's performance s ncredble, fusng humor and serousness nto every, sentence, not mssng a beat or lettng up n any way. Ths move may boosths career. Lemmon s Shelly "The Machne" Levne, a salesman on a bad-streak who has been n the busness a long tme. Havng hs daughter n the hosptal and blls plng up puts pressure on "The Machne" to muster some sales, of whch he has none n ths month. He appeals to hs boss, played by Kevn Spacey (Consentng Adults, above), to gve hm the Glengarry leads, whch are only to be gven to the top salesman. However, f only the top salesman gets the new leads, then how can any of the other salesmen compete f gven the old, "deadbeat" leads? That s what the problem s for ths story, the boss and the ' salesmen are workng on dfferent levels and are thus unable to understand each other. you come to my house, sleep wth my wfe, and 'll go to your house and sleep wth your wfe. They wll never know the dfference. At frst, Rchard thnks he s crazy, but soon gets used to the dea. What Rchard doesn't realze s how much that one nght wll affect the rest of hs lfe. Rchard wakes up the next mornng (n hs own house wth hs own wfe) to fnd hmself accused of murder. He s all alone, wth the, excepton of a prvate nvestgator, n hs search for the truth. Drector James Foley (At Close Range) does a fne job of movng.thexamera,': and- snce the prmary scenes : were located on only two sets, the camera work can be mportant. The use of mult-colored lghts screamed symbolc and emotonal references, and wth Pacno walkng around, seemed a lot lke "Dck Tracy." f you are lookng for acton or a love story or even a happy endng, look elsewhere, there are plenty out there. But ths move has a thnkng, symbolc storylne that deals wth the real lfe of the realestate busness. The one dea that came to me about ths move s ths: Lfe s a salesptch, talk fast, get people on your sde, and use them for your own proft. Then agan, that s just an dea. Work on your own! But, she stll wasn't as good as she was n "Robn Hood." t seems the bgger the part she has, the better she s. Klne gves a strong performance as the emotonally tortured Rchard Parker. He must not only prove hs nnocence, but try to wn hs famly back and break the spell that Edde has over them. Klne s a versatle actor who can not only play dramatc roles ("Grand Canyon"), but comedc ones as well ("A Fsh Called Wanda"). The only problem had was wth Rebecca Mller. Although we don't see much of her, the scenes that she s r'ton't seem very belevable. Next to Kevn Spacey's chllng performance as Edde, Mller seems lke an amateur. She s the weak lnk n ths otherwse strong cast. The begnnng of the move s a lttle drawn out. All talk and no acton. Ths s unusual snce Pakula also drected "Presumed nnocent", whch kept your attenton for the duraton of the flm. '.'Consentng Adults" lets you know who dd t from the very begnnng. But don't get dscouraged. The second half wll have you sttng on the edge of your seat. know ths may dsappont some of you, but the move was not as raunchy as thought t would be. Don't worry, t s stll worth seeng. Soul Asylum good for drvng by DANA BUONCONT When popped nto the record store to pck up the new Soul Asylum album, "Grave Dancer's Unon," somethng struck me as rather odd. Readng the back of the CD box, notced that t had been produced by Mchael Benhorh, the same person who produced Herbe Hancock's "Rock-t." Havng never heard SA before, could only magne what they would sound lke. Pleasantly surprsed was when Soul Asylum, from Mnneapols, proved not to be synth. mush but a kller album of 12 honest, straght-ahead rockers; Maybe the perfect CD to have n your car when you're drvng 90 mph down that open stretch of hghway. n the same way some candy bars boast a soft, creamy center, "Grave Dancer's Unon" offers songs that have an acoustc heart. Recyclng program at Marst begns wth separatng trash by DANNE PAPA Marst College s now requred to recycle ts waste due to a New York State law passed on Sept. 1. The Marst College Student Recyclng Commttee, a subgroup of Students Encouragng Global Awareness (SEGA), s n charge of the new recyclng program on campus. Lnda Passaro, a sophomore chemstry major, s the coordnator of the commttee. "t's a change n habt that's all t s," Passaro sad. She added t s "a matter of becomng envronmentally aware and learnng why to recycle." The recyclng program was done n :Uages, accordng to Passaro. The South End of campus (the resdence halls, ncludng Benot and Gregory Houses) started recyclng on Oct. 2. There were three bns purchased for each floor n each dorm and recyclable materals had to be sorted and deposted nto specfc bns. One bn s for whte paper only. Ths does not nclude computerpaper, colored paper, newspapers or magaznes, however. Also, paper can not be crumpled, she sad. A second bn s for plastcs and glass. Everythng must be cleaned and rnsed out and any plastc lds must be removed, sad Passaro. The fnal bn s for alumnum and tn. Any products made from alumnum, such as alumnum fol, are accepted. Cans must be rnsed and labels, caps and lds removed so there s no contamnaton. "f the bn s contamnated, t all has to be cleaned and rnsed by the housekeepng staff," sad Sara French, assstant coordnator for the program. The housekeepng staff emptes the bns nto larger durrpsfers Once of "twte : a week.' _ ,,-.., ,... ^ ~. ^-. The commttee s "tryng to mplement a program that has students who have to do communty servce rnse and clean the tems, but that stll beng dscussed," sad French, a sophomore. On the North End of campus, there are three ndvdual bns that are next to the regular garbage bns. The North End s a more ndependent recyclng program because students have to make a conscous effort themselves rather than relyng on housekeepng to dspose of ther waste. The North End has the same gudelnes that apply to the South End. The bns are montored by students who record the levels of contamnaton n each bn and record how many tems are n each bn. "The data s not just beng gnored. t's beng read and looked over. However, n some areas people are totally msreadng the sgns," Passaro sad. Sgns that explan exactly what can be recycled are at every ste. Some students are msusng the bns. Tobacco spt and urne are just some of the unwanted tems found n the bns. "People are just not takng the tme and not takng t serously,"sad Passaro, from Valley Stream, N.Y. "t's frustratng how much work that has been done for the students and they don't even make a mnute effort," she added..the commttee s organzng educatonal meetngs for each lvng area on campus whch explan the benefts of recyclng and why t should be done, sad Passaro. f the data analyzed for each lvng area shows a partcular place s not recyclng, a re-educatonal meetng wll be held for that dorm or area. The commttee proposed possble fnes be nsttuted f specfc areas do not recycle. Ths proposal s stll pendng. The general consensus seems to be that Marst s wonderful at Publc Relatons. Some have sad that ths self-evaluaton seems to be about 90 percent prase and 10 percent crtcsm. There s nothng wrong wth emphaszng one's strong ponts. One would have to be an dot to not put the proverbal best foot forward just make sure that foot doesn't end up n your mouth. Some ponts and recommendatons rased n the report easly provoke comment. Chapter three n the nsttutonal Self-Study s devoted to Admssons. The frst recommendaton made wthn the Admssons secton deals wth fnancal ad. t states: "Marst should explore new and creatve approaches to helpng famles, partcularly those n the mddle-ncome range, fnance ther educatonal expenses." Those of us n that "mddle-ncome range" are glad to hear that Marst beleves t "should" explore some dfferent approaches. The queston s: wll they? Hey, t doesn't take a genus to know fnancal ad s scarce! t takes tme to fnd workable, nnovatve ways to help students fnance ther educaton. How long wll t be before any possble solutons are brought forward? The faculty s addressed further on n the 217 page report. The second recommendaton n ths sectons states: " A n effort should be made to fll new faculty ^n^ymmajjl^ ohesho-flfopen-posforrs;' Fthe person n queston s a female or a mnorty then that's wonderful, but above all the person hred ought to the best person for the job. There s lttle doubt that those hred would be amply qualfed; however, the wordng of that recommendaton sounds lke reverse dscrmnaton! The thrd recommendaton states: "All new faculty should have the requste credentals and teachng experence n hand at the tme of hrng." ; No, let's hre morons. Talk about your obvous gudelnes. sn't ths one too obvous to menton?' t makes one wonder how often, f ever; unqualfed people were hred. Further down n the lst of recommendatons t says: "The faculty should seek ways to regan a sense of tself as a body, prmarly by fndng more tme/methods to meet to dscuss mportant academc ssues." v Then, n a later chapter, the report talks about the "strong tradton at Marst of faculty nvolvement n academc governance... faculty take serously (and guard jealously) ther responsblty to make academc polcy." Apparently that "strong tradton" does not nclude attendng the faculty colloqua. Last sprng, the faculty held a meetng to dscuss the proposed Honors Program. Accordng to the study, there are 146 full-tme professors at Marst. At the heght of attendance durng ths hour-long dscusson, only 40 faculty members were present. As a Crcle reporter sttng n on the meetng, was dsgusted as lstened to two professors quetly dscuss ther plans for the weekend whle another professor was debatng some of the proposal's requrements. The meetng left me feelng as f had just returned to hgh school for a fnal perod study hall. The faculty dd not jealously guard ts responsblty that day. Apathy may work fne for phlosophers lke Spnoza but here at Marst there s no place for t. However, the study s honest n ts assessments. For all the scoffng and exasperated eye-rollng, the overall report s far. t does say n all areas there s room for mprovement. t s unfortunate that somethng so mportant would be seen by students as just another PR job. Bll Clnton s stll ahead n thepols/the reason s smple. Bl lclnton has no record to defend. He has no pror record as Commander n Chef, somethng George Bush, unsuccessfully, tres to explot. f you asked George Bush to reflect on hs record, wthout a doubt, he would cte the end of the Cold War and hs success over Saddam Hussen, but these two examples does not a good record make. Communsm fell durng hs admnstraton...not under t. f any credt should be gven to the breakdown of Communsm n the former Sovet Unon, t should go to Ronald Reagan for buyng them out. But, the prce has been steep for both the Sovet Republcs and the Unted States. The Bush admnstraton was left wth a surplus of defense and a falng economy. George Bush also needs to recognze that the Unted States s no longer the sole super power because the Sovet Unon has crumbled. Although we reman the envy of people around the world, we no longer have the economc power we once dd. n order to become a super power agan, we need to ncrease nvestment here, develop new, effectve trade agreements and ncrease the number of jobs n the U.S. Ths s what the Amercan people want to hear, not more draft dodgng accusatons. f you can get past the ssues of character, you're left wth' the reason Ross Perot entered the race - the ssue of the economy. Of course, all the canddates have a plan to revtlaze the economy. Ther goals are the same. The choces le n the means by whch each canddate plans on gettng, that done. The Reagan/Bush/Quayle admnstraton has faled. t s now clear that "trckle-down" economcs don't work. George Bush has had three years to create polces to jump-start the economy...we need a new strategy. Bll Clnton and Ross Perot can't guarantee that ther plans to fx the economy wll be effectve, but we already know that George Bush's aren't. 'm compelled to trust Clnton's nstncts on fxng the economy over the other canddates. And wthout a thrvng economy, health care and educaton wll be further sacrfced to pay for our growng debt. He offers a bold, new plan to re-start the economy. And whle crtcs say he s the typcal "tax and spend Democrat," they may be wrong come January. Bll Clnton can't predct everythng he wll do durng hs term as presdent, but durng the last debate he made a commtment not to rase taxes on the mddle class to pay for hs programs. f he s elected presdent, and goes back on ths promse, he can be sure he would not be reelected n He s wllng to take ths rsk. He also contnued to blame Congress and crtcze Clnton's record n Arkansas. He agan faled. What mpressed me the most durng the fnal debate was Ross Perot - not for hs plan to revtlze the economy, but hs nterpretaton of the campagn coverage and the canddates. After crtczng the press for tellng people what to thnk, he summed up the contempt Amercan voters have for poltcs and government n general. He's absolutely rght when he says the problem wth our system of government s that, "Nobody takes responsblty for anythng." Don't let polls and journalsts tell you how to vote. Don't thnk f you vote for Perot your vote s wasted. Don't let apathy re-elect George Bush. Carolne Jonah, junor Clnton as presdent a bad dea New breed of Dracula arrves for Halloween Edtor: Congratulatons must go out to Bll Clnton on hs successful presdental campagn. t was only a matter of tme before a potental presdental canddate would explot the gnorance of many Amercans, as Bll Clnton has done. Ths s not a jab at Amerca, but rather a wakeup call. After lstenng to many Clnton suppoters around the naton and on ths campus, t s clear to me that an economc course and a government course, coupled wth an ethcs course would put an end to Clnton's campagn predcated on gnorance. Many Marst students and Amercans n general support Clnton, for among other reasons, hs pro-choce stance. Bll Clnton has taken every opportunty to express ths vew and to scare women and other pro-choce advocates nto not votng for Presdent Bush because of hs pro-lfe stance. A class n government, however, would clear up ths msrepresentaton. The executve branch has no authorty on the ssue of aborton, only the Supreme Cout does, and therefore the presdent's poston,s meanngless. Clnton, however, s quck to pont out that Bush would stack the court by "appontng" pro-lfe judges. Apparantly Clnton needs a government course, because the presdent does not appont judges, he merely nomnates them, and therefore has lttle ablty to change the balance of the court. Clnton also successfully led to the Amercan people and flled them wth false hope about hs economc polcy. Apparently the Amercan people are supposed to gnore the plethora of economsts who say hs plan wll not help end the recesson, nor wll he be able to pay for all of hs proposals. Clnton says that hs economc polcy s a departure from prevously faled "tax and spend" economcs of the democrats. On the other hand, he proposes taxes on the upper 2 per cent of the economc scale, taxes on foregn corporatons, and f you beleve the economsts who have no stake n ths electon, he wll rase taxes ol the workng class to pay for hs proposals. So, you have the tax ncreases, you have the spendng ncreases, sure sounds lke tax and spend to me. Clnton does, however, clam he wants to cut government spendng (current government spendng, as he wll ultmately ncrease f he plans to keep all of hs campagn promses), but the only concrete example he has gven s to cut defense spendng. Apparently he does not mnd throwng all of these people out of work, thus addng to the rate of unemployment, but have no fear, he can always rase taxes and pay for hs job re-tranng program. Unfortunately for Bll Clnton have taken> an economc course and therefore read between the lnes. Hey, t doesn't take a genus to know fnancal ad s scarce. t takes tme to fnd workable, nnovatve ways to help students fnance ther educaton. How long wll t be before any possble solutons are brought forward? The faculty s addressed further on n the 217 page report. The second recommendaton n ths sectons states: "An effort should be made to fll new faculty ljnjgs^jrhtarnxby^women and mnortes." Those most qualfed should be the ones-to fll open postons. F the person n queston s a female or a mnorty then that's wonderful, but above all the person hred ought to the best person for the job. There s lttle doubt that those hred would be amply qualfed; however, the wordng of that recommendaton sounds lke reverse dscrmnaton. The thrd recommendaton states: "All new faculty should have the requste credentals and teachng experence n hand at the tme of hrng." No, let's hre morons. Talk about your obvous gudelnes. sn't ths one too obvous to menton? t makes one wonder how often, f ever, unqualfed people were hred. Further down n the lst of recommendatons t says: "The faculty should seek ways to regan a sense of tself as a body, prmarly by fndng more tme/methods to meet to dscuss mportant academc ssues." Then, n a later chapter.the report talks about the "strong tradton at Marst of faculty nvolvement n academc governance... faculty take serously (and guard jealously) ther responsblty to make academc polcy." Apparently that "strong tradton" does not nclude attendng the faculty colloqua. Edtors' notebook ^CAR OLESKEWCZ The Crcle does not support or endorse any specfc canddate n ths year's presdental electon. We do, however, encourage the students and faculty of Marst College to exercse ther rght to vote. We have come to despse "career poltcans" because we feel they do not have our nterests at heart. Well, why should they when only half of us vote? We at the Crcle have one poltcal columnst and have prnted many letters to the edtor. None of these specfcally support the vews pf the Crcle edtoral staff, but thought Marst students mght be nterested n how we wll vote. None of us support George Bush. Chrssy Cassdy and Anastasa Custer are undecded, not sure of whether to vote for Clnton or Perot. Custer lkes what Perot has to say but questons hs ablty to get thngs done. Carpenter, from Boonevlle, N.Y., sad she was nformed her board was no longer n exstence the mornng after Gordon's practcal joke. "Everybody took t so serously," sad the junor psychology/specal educaton major. "t was so ntense you had to laugh." Gordon, a frend of Carpenter's, confessed hs trck to her soon afterwards. "Mke was the one playng wth the lghts and that stuff on the mrror," sad Carpenter. " thought t was so funny but people stll beleved n t." Carpenter has been an RA n Sheahan Hall for two years and sad she tred to pass on the stores lke her RA dd to her. "The stores ddn't nterest them as much as they dd us," she sad. Not only dd students react both negatvely and postvely to the theme, but advsors dsagreed too. " thnk t's an excellent theme. thnk the crtcsm s unwar ranted," sad Mary McComb, advsor to the yearbook. However, others n the Offce of Saftey and Securty are not so sure that everythng has a logcal explanaton. Harry Haskns, a securty guard, sad he knows of two dfferent ncdents whch defy explanaton. Haskns sad a fellow securty was sttng n the Fresde Lounge n Campus Center when suddenly he felt a gust of wnd brush pass hm, and the scent of perfume hung heavly n the ar. As the man looked up he saw a shadowy slhouette floatng n front of the wndows. He told Haskns he stood up very calmly and walked out of the room and now refuses to enter the Lounge for any reason. Haskns also knows a another securty guard who was lockng up the Marst Chapel when suddenly the door began to shake vgorously. "Needless to say the Chapel ddn't get locked that nght," Haskns sad. Haskns' stores were all second-hand accounts but Denns McConologue sad he has had encounters wth Marst Ghosts rangng from unexplanable phenomena n Champagnat Hall to actual ghost ctngs n Campus Center. 6et5%0ffThe Lowest Travel Fare YouCanFnd. Mchael mxes drnks, not ptches "by MARK STACKOW Lke any good bartender, Matt. Mchael s accustomed to lendng an ear. However, most patrons at The Red Lobster, where Mchael works the bar on weekends, would rather lsten than talk. Mchael, a former professonal baseballcpjayersand jat.xurrent MafsP'Collegtf senor, has veda lfe many just dream about. He s, to some extent, Poughkeepse's verson of Sam Malone, the exbaseball player and bartender character on "Cheers." Mchael, however, s not comfortable n the lmelght. " lke to keep a low profle," he admtted. n fact, t came as a surprse to many n the Marst communty that Gene Mchael, the New York Yankee general manager, had a son enrolled here. That dscovery came when the younger Mchael was oh hand to help hs father dedcate Marst's new baseball feld on Oct. 3. Mchael's arrval at Marst s an ntrgungone. n the words of Robert Frost, Mchael took the path "less traveled." The path started on nterstate 85 and U.S. Hghway 101. These are the roads that weave ther way through the hlls of North Carolna- roads that became the home away from home for dozens of mnor league ballplayers tolng n the Carolna League. Mchael spent tme as a ptcher wth the Prnce Wllam (Va.) Cannons and the Greensboro (N.C.) Hornets of the South Atlantc League both Yankee afflates. Mchael, a left-hander,never consdered ptchng untl he played at.dutchess, Communty College under Art Smth, now 'the head coach at Marst. "Coach Smth turned me nto a ptcher whle was at Dutchess. walked about ten batters n my frst game, and never wanted to ptch agan. But Coach showed confdence n me and gave me the ball to start the next game," he recalled. From Dutchess, Mchael went on to Moorhead St. (Ky.) and sgned wth the Yankees after he was drafted late n the 1988 md-season draft. " sgned for only about $1,000 and all the guys laughed at me," he sad. "Even wth my pop's background, was nave. was stll lvng a dream gettng pad for baseball." Mchael was determned not to depend on hs father for baseball success and 'made the team the old fashon way he earned t by outrunnng and outworkng-the other ptchers. However, a flaw n hs delvery caused an njury to hs rotator cuff, a vulnerable band of muscles n the shoulder. Lengthy rehabltaton and surgery stll could not fx the pro- ~ blem and Mchael was forced to retre. "My wfe Ellen (who he met on a blnd date nne years ago and marred sx years later) took t harder then me," sad Mchael. EVen though he turned down a coachng poston n the mnors, Mchael remans close to the game by playng n a local tr-state league for the Pne Plans Plansmen. Mchael, even by hs account, lved the dream of many ballplayer seven f he dd not make t to the bg leagues. After all, he could not complan about a world where Catfsh Hunter was hs neghbor and Grag. Nettles lved down the street. Or where former teammates lke Roberto Kelly and Kevn. Maas have made t to Yankee Stadum. Today, Mchael has a new dream he wshes to own and operate hs own sports bar, not unlke Sam Malone n "Cheers." And at the tender age of 27, Mchael has dscovered what many older men stll have not realzed. "t's not the arrval that's mportant, but the journey," he sad. by ANDREW HOLMLUND To the msfortune of the women's volleyball team, they came up short on ther home court, as the Red Foxes hosted ts frst Northeast Conference Tournament. The Foxes were able to bounce back by sweepng past St. Francs (N.Y.) agan, 15-5, 15-9 and Slenz and McKeon once agan paced the Marst attack wth 10 klls apece whle lone senor Robn Gestl followed wth nne. On Sunday, the Foxes advanced to the semfnals wth a convncng 15-4, 15-10, 15-3 vctory over Farlegh Dcknson Unversty. n the match, Creghton put down a team-leadng 14 klls, whle McKeon spked 13. Marst hopes for a frst-place fnsh were evaporated when Robert-Morrs beat the Foxes n the semfnals, 15-9, 10-15, 15-11, and 15 : 8. The loss was the second loss for Marst n the double-elmnaton tournament! '; /. Head Coach Sally Johnston was not only pleased} wth the thrdplace result; she 1 - was also happy wth the team's effort. "The frst match aganst Robert Morrs was one of the best of the tournament," she sad. "The grls played extremely well the best have seen all season." Mora Breen and Creghton were named to the All-Tournament Team. Foxes stumble agan, wnless last 5 weeks by J.W. STEWART Sports Edtor Sept. 19,1992 Marst beats Pace to run ts record,to 2-0. Today, Oct. 29, 1992 The football team stands at 2-4-1, unable to wn n almost a month-and-a-half and elmnated from the quest. for the Lberty Conference crown. The team's personal losng streak contnued when t lost to Rensselaer last Saturday, The Red Foxes, who never traled by more than nne, had an opportunty to pull out a wn on the ran-soaked, mudcovered feld when Don D'Auto slpped n from fve yards out wth 9:40 left n the contest. However, RP (5-1) returned the ensung kckoff to the Foxes' 35-yard lne, punched n an extra score and sent Marst back to Poughkeepse wth another exasperatng defeat. "That kckoff return gave them feld poston more than anythng," sad Head Coach Jm Parady. "We had a couple of mental let-downs n stua- tons lke that and that hurt." t also dd not help that Marst was only l-of-13 n thrd-down conversons. "We need to move the chans a lttle bt better and keep the offense on the feld. You have to" get them (thrddown conversons) when the opportunty arses," sad Parady. The opportunty to wn the game dd arse; accordng to Parady, but once agan, executon was a problem." One person keeps breakng down on every play," he explaned. "Andt's not the same person breakng down, ether, and that's perplexng." Besdes D'Auto's run, Marst receved scorng help from Scott DeBenardo (38-yard feld goal) and Dan Phelan (15-yard touchdown catch from Bran McCourt). Wth the prospect of wnnng the conference gone, the goal the team wants to accomplsh s a wnnng season. "Our backs are aganst the wall," sad Parady. "We have to wn our last three.'' Standng n the way s St. John's. The Redmen come to town on Halloween. "We're hopng we'll get some sprtual help." sad Parady. Soccer club fnds fun after year of frustraton Somethng tells me that f the women's soccer team had lost every game ths year, they really wouldn't have mnded. That's hot to say the team lkes to lose, but somethng else mattered to the Red Foxes ths season havng fun. They had been mssng t for a year and as a club sport, that's the man ngredent. "t got to the pont where t wasn't fun and we expected to lose," sad senor halfback Laura Nelson of the 1991 campagn, whch was full of embarrassng scores, poor atttudes ard a dffcult coach. "Ths year, don't beleve anyone thnks we played a bad game." That seems to be the prevalng atttude around the women's team, whch s stll at the club level four years after ts charter* Pullng a record from the runs of a team can do that. Scrdoes only losng games by one goal and not 10. "Last year, we were gettng blown out 12-2 and 8-0," recalled senor co-captan Patrce Selleck wth a shake of her head. "We_. haven't been blown out at all ths ' year and that's helped." n fact, the worst defeat the team suffered ths year was a 3-0 loss to Farfeld n the last game of the season. " thnk they were very pleased after every game," sad George Browne, a senor who volunteers as the women's coach. "Sprts were stll hgh after we lost because they were havng fun." Havng fun was as hgh of a prorty ths year as revampng the offense to play a lne or tranng all the new players. n order to have fun, however, the team knew t had to change ts atttude. "They (last year's senors) weren't seeng the results we're seeng and thnk that got them frustrated," sad senor Kerry Schwartzmann, the other cocaptan. The Red Foxes also needed a better coach than last year. Not necessarly someone who would lead them to an undefeated season, but someone who could ft nto the club sport mentalty. They found t n George Browne. Browne, a soccer player the past four years wth the men, was \^.. Thursday Mornng Quarterback Stewart "recruted" by Selleck to coach the team after he njured hs knee the frst day of practce. Hs personal and far style of coachng was n stark contrast to Bobby Medl's. Med, also a former soccer player, graduated last year. " don't have anythng good to say about hm (Medl)," stated Selleck. " don't thnk he related to us on a personal level. Hs goal was to wn and say, ' coached a women's team and they're 13-0.' And soccer's not supposed to be lke that especally on a club level." Browne was a bt surprsed to hear the accolades. " wasn't really a 'coach' to them," he sad, shruggng off the fact he helped replace the frowns that domnated last year's team. " was more or less a frend. was there just to make decsons." One of the decsons the team may have to make n the future s what knd of atttude to have n the event they are approved for varsty status. Some of the players are already thnkng about that, and beleve t or not, t's not easy to come up wth an answer. " see the pros and cons of beng a varsty sport," sad Selleck. "When t's a club, you can stll mess around and have fun. Varsty,t's cut and dry." More pressure-flled, too. Defntely a "con." "As a club, t's not as serous and you don't have to be great to come out and play," ponted out senor Dedre Sullvan. n a nutshell, that's the bggest argument for stayng a club team. " guess f you're a varsty team, you're gong to be serous to a pont. just hope when they go varsty, they remember to have fun," reasoned Nelson, combnng both modes of thought. And that may be the key to the future rght there just have fun and enjoy t no matter where you are. That's easy to say, but can be much harder to do. t'll be an nterestng adjustment for the women down the road. But, "fun" was the by-word ths year and, hopefully, wll be the word most assocated wth the team n years to come. That s, of course, next to the word "varsty." J.W. Stewart s The Crcle's sports edtor. TO THE MARST COMMUNTY: On Sunday, Nov. 1 between l-3pm, the women's basketball team wll hold walk-on tryouts at the McCann Center. Contact Ken Babneau at X2320 ASAP to make arrangements.
