1 AUDITION PACKET Included: -Overview and audition information -Audition schedule -Bulldog Dancer contract (for informational purposes) The Bulldog Dancers: An Overview The Bulldog Dancers are a part of the Samford Marching Band and perform at all home Football Games and Pep Rallies. Also, the Bulldog Dancers perform at most home Men s and Women s Basketball Games, Step Sing, and various other events on and off campus. Scholarships are available to team members through the Samford Marching Band. The Bulldog Dancers are expected to attend all practices, workouts, and performance appearances for the year. Dancers practice two times a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and at various other times when necessary. The team will be given a calendar of all expected semester practice times at the beginning of the fall and spring practices. Dancers will attend a mandatory band camp August to prepare for football season. Housing and dining will be provided during band camp. Dancers who are not already in Birmingham for Jan-term should be prepared to return to Birmingham on January 21, 2013 for rehearsals and athletic events. If dancers choose to reside on campus for practices January 21-26, housing will be provided, but dancers will be required to purchase a prorated meal plan. Dancers are expected to provide their own footwear. Team members are provided uniforms and performance attire and are expected to maintain those items throughout the year. Any articles lost or damaged must be paid for by the dancer. The Bulldog Dancers represent the Samford Marching Band, the Athletic Department of Samford University and the university as a whole, and are expected to act in a way that reflects the mission of the university. Requirements Candidates must be enrolled as a full-time Samford University student for the Fall Semester, High School seniors and transfer students may audition if they have been accepted to Samford for the Fall Semester, Acceptance will be verified upon registration. Current Samford University students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

2 Must be able to attend a one-day audition on Saturday, April 21 or submit audition video by Wednesday, April 18. In-person auditions are highly encouraged. Please turn in all registration forms and fees by Wednesday, April 18. Must be able to attend all practices, workouts, and performance appearances for the year. See dates/times in The Bulldog Dancers: An Overview. Audition Process You will receive an once your application is processed. Please see Audition Schedule for Saturday, April 21 details. Please do not be late. Auditions are closed to the public, including family and friends. A dance routine and a sideline pom routine will be taught during the audition on Saturday, April 21. The dance routine will include jazz/hip hop and technical elements. Possible technical elements that could be included are: right and left pirouettes (double and triple), fouettes, leaps (right and left switch leaps, straddle, jete, calypso). The sideline routine will consist of traditional cheer/dance movements. Pom-poms will be provided for the sideline routine. Dancers should prepare a 1-minute dance ahead of time including a double or triple turn, right or left leap and calypso. After performance of the prepared 1-minute dance, dancers may be asked a few short questions based off of their registration materials. Please bring a copy of your dance music on an ipod or MP3 player. Dancers should be prepared to answer the following questions before the judges: o What do you feel is your best quality as a dancer? o If chosen to be a part of the Bulldog Dancers, how do you see yourself supporting the mission of the Samford Athletic Department? o What do you hope to get out of being part of the Bulldog Dancers? You may bring water and snacks to auditions, but they may only be consumed during breaks and outside of the audition rooms. Lunch/Snacks may be purchased in the Samford food court/cafeteria or you may bring your own. The Bulldog Dancers will be announced up to an hour after the auditions. A new team meeting will be held immediately afterwards in the dance room (Seibert). Video Auditions In-person auditions are highly encouraged. If a video audition is necessary, please communicate with the dance team advisor and/or captain in advance. Videos must be received by Wednesday, April 18. Videos must be filmed head-on. Videos must include a statement of the dancer s name and student status (incoming freshman, sophomore, etc.). Dancers must answer the following questions on the video: o What do you feel is your best quality as a dancer? o If chosen to be a part of the Bulldog Dancers, how do you see yourself supporting the mission of the Samford Athletic Department? o What do you hope to get out of being part of the Bulldog Dancers? Videos must include a 1-minute choreographed jazz/hip hop dance including a double or triple turn, right or left leap and calypso.

3 Videos must be in DVD format and must be accompanied by a picture, dance resume, and registration with payment. Audition Attire No jewelry should be worn during auditions. Attire should consist of full length jazz pants and a fitted dance top with appropriate dance shoes. The dance top should not show your midriff. Hair should be secured away from the face. Judging Criteria Judges will be selecting the Bulldog Dancers based on Dance Technique and Skills, Dance Execution and Energy, Poise, Personal Appearance, Personality, and Punctuality. Video auditions will judged using the same rating system. 4 AUDITION SCHEDULE Saturday, April 21 Check-in at the Registration Table, Lobby of Seibert Welcome, Introductions, General Information Pom Routine instruction Dance Routine instruction 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. 12:00-12:15 p.m. 12:15-1:00 p.m. 1:00-2:00 p.m. Break/Review/Practice Time 2:00-3:00 p. m. Judging starts in Dance Room. Dancers will perform the Pom Routine, followed by the Dance Routine in small groups Individuals perform prepared 1-minute dances followed by a brief interview. 3:00-4:00 p.m. 4:00-5:00 p.m. Announcement of the Bulldog Dancers with team meeting immediately following in the Dance Room (Seibert Hall). NOTE: Event times and order may vary as a result of the audition process.

5 Dancer Contract (for informational purposes only; copies will be provided at auditions for team members) ACADEMICS Dancers must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, and remain a full-time student making satisfactory progress toward degree completion. PERFORMANCES Dancers must attend band camp, all rehearsals, all performances, and all related activities during the year. Performances include all home football games, home basketball games, and other special events. Dancers must report to pre-game practices in full dress with hair and makeup prior to game/performance at a time set by the team leadership unless otherwise noted. UNIFORM Basic uniform is provided (game attire, special costumes, pom poms). Dancers are required to purchase their own shoes for performances. Dancers are responsible for maintaining all uniforms. Uniforms must be kept clean at all times. Any articles lost or damage must be paid for by the dancer. All uniforms are property of Samford University and must be turned into the advisor before the next season s final auditions. Uniform items should be worn only by dance team members. Any dance team member terminated from the team should return all uniforms upon termination. In Uniform means a groomed appearance, with clean makeup and hair pulled back as instructed. No jewelry other than uniform earrings is to be worn. Smoking or drinking is not allowed while in uniforms. REHEARSALS Dancers must attend the two week band camp August Dancers are required to return to Birmingham on August 12, at which point dancers will be allowed to move into their dorm rooms. Meal vouchers will be provided for team members during band camp before fall meal plans go into effect. Dancers who are not already in Birmingham for Jan-term will tentatively return to Birmingham on January 21, 2013 for rehearsals and athletic events. If dancers choose to reside on campus for

6 practices January 21-26, housing will be provided, but dancers will be required to purchase a prorated meal plan. Rehearsals are 2-3 times a week during the school year and at various other times when necessary. Dancers are expected to attend ALL rehearsals. All rehearsals during the fall are scheduled in the afternoons and at various other times when necessary. Rehearsal times are 3:30-5:30 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. All rehearsals during the spring are scheduled during the evenings and at various other times when necessary. Rehearsal times are 6-9 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Dancers will be given a calendar of all expected semester practice times at the beginning of the summer and winter practices. Any dancer missing a rehearsal prior to a game will not be allowed to perform at the game. Any dancer missing 2 performances, rehearsals, or events is subject to dismissal from the team. Tardiness is inexcusable; consequences for tardiness will be enforced by the captain. GENERAL Team commitment is for an academic year and includes part of Janterm due to athletic appearances and rehearsals. All team members are eligible to receive scholarship money from the Samford University Marching Band. Scholarships will be awarded in spring 2012 for the school year. During the fall semester, all dance team members will be a part of the Samford University Marching Band. Dancers will practice with the band on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in preparation for halftime shows at home football games. Dancers will receive a one hour P.E. credit for participation in band. During the spring semester, dance team is an independent student-led organization. All practices will be led by the captain and co-captain. The dance team will practice independently on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Performances will mainly consist of appearances at home basketball games. Smoking or drinking is not allowed while in uniforms, during dance team functions, or on official travel with Samford University. Violations shall be subject to serious disciplinary measures and may include dismissal from the team. Only uniform jewelry is to be worn with the uniform. Only acceptable body piercing is female s ears. No exposed tattoos at performances or appearances. Dancers must conduct themselves in an orderly, professional manner at all times and show respect toward the team leadership, team advisor, team members, and university employees. Dancers must not use profanity at a game or rehearsal nor pose themselves in an offensive manner towards anyone. Use of profanity at a game or rehearsal will dismiss a dancer from that activity. Dancers may be suspended or terminated from the team for offensive language. All internet pictures including those on social networks should be of a positive, clean nature and should not exhibit the use of alcohol, drugs, misconduct, or any association or affiliation of such activity. Misappropriate use of pictures or language on the Internet or any publications will be a violation of policy and will result in dismissal from the team. I, acknowledge that I have been accepted as a member of the Bulldog Dancers. I promise to abide by all rules laid out in the above contract and recognize that as a Bulldog Dancer I serve as an ambassador to the Samford Marching Band, Samford Athletic Department
