Be Prepared for ANYTHING Hot or Cold, Rainy or Sunny! FROM THE LSFSC PRESIDENT By Rock Rotten SASS # Hang in there everyone, we are almost through winter. We got a little shot of spring this weekend when it was 85 degrees! Unfortunately, it was in the 20 s the very next day and the teens this morning. But, spring is just around the corner. So are several annual shoots and championships. I can hardly wait for the Texas State Championship at Oakwood and the Texas Wild Bunch State Championship at Ormsby. CCV bought some new dueling trees and hostage targets and we shot them in Wild Bunch for the first time last weekend. It was a humbling experience for most everyone as those tiny swingers sure are a challenge to hit. I m sure they will be used for the State match so you d better practice if you re hoping to do well. I highly suggest putting those 1911 s on paper and making sure where they hit rifles too. It s a good idea to do that with all our Cowboy guns you d be surprised at how many of us don t. Both sets of my Ruger Vaquero s shot way low one set was 10 low at 20 ft way too low for a clean shoot. Another set was about 6 low. Enough to need fixing. FROM The CVV President By Billy Bob Evans SASS# I want to thank Bent Star for helping me move the Wild Bunch targets to the other end of the range. This way we will no longer need to be moving them around so much every weekend we shoot. Also next month we will be having a work day or two in order to get a new stage built down around the school house. I will be letting you all know when the details are settled. ROCK ROTTEN Continued It s getting close to election time and I can hardly wait. Primaries are in a few short weeks. We have some exceptional candidates from Texas and I encourage everyone to vet all candidates and make informed, conservative decisions with their votes. This is the most important set of elections for America we have had in a great while. I m afraid the very future of our Republic is at stake. I pray the Republicans can retake the Senate, increase our numbers in the House and start undoing the damage these liberal progressive pukes have done. Please vote. Please vote. PLEASE VOTE! It does make a difference.

Rob Stewart) ROCK ROTTEN Continued Here we are fresh off the Winter Olympics and straight into an international crisis. Our good friends from Russia are threatening new military action against another one of its separatist states, the Ukraine. This is not good. Not good at all. Our weak President will no doubt bungle this one just like he s done every crisis under his watch. Who s going to answer that 2 am phone call? Leave your message when you hear the beep and wait for Hillary to call you back. Nuff said and better hold on to your hats because this could get ugly. Real ugly. But then again At this point, what difference does it make? We all know, that is, we real Americans, we conservative Americans, we Americans who believe in self-sacrifice and the rule of law and personal responsibility know..it makes all the difference in the world! Enough politics for this Newsletter and on to the Winter Olympics. I watched as much of them as I could. I always have ever since I can remember. The athletes are so impressive with their abilities even when they don t perform their best like many of our shooters. It amazes me how much they step it up every four years. I especially enjoyed the ski jumping events, slope soaring, and half pipe. Truly amazing performances. Funny, I found myself critiquing some athletes when they didn t perform as I expected. It didn t take but an instant to realize I would probably die attempting to even be at the same event as they, much less finish a competitive run.

3 ROCK ROTTEN Continued Even in my youth..and I was, by all accounts, a bona fide risk taker. Just ask my parents how many trips we took to the emergency room for what were truly emergencies. I lost count at about 175 stitches 5 to 16 at a time..they said I was accident prone I knew better. So all you holed up, sceert of winter folks, clean up them guns, wash up them Cowboy clothes, load up some ammo and get your butt on down to the range! to exercise your Second Amendment Rights. They are badly in need of exercise. membership coordinator STUFF By Rio Hondo Rob Bring your Smart Phone to Ormsby Ranch. Get photos to show friends, family, co-workers what Cowboy Action Shooting is about. Makes explaining and generating new interest easier. Try it. Willie Earp s the CA News, every month, to members of LSFSC or CVV. For those who are not members, but are friends, family, recent visitors, etc., I send CA News to you from my Forwarding List. I am updating the list. If I forward CA News to your inbox, I need to hear from you by March 25, to stay on the list. After 3/25, I will remove names who did not respond or I have not seen at Ormsby Ranch in the last 6 months. If you are an officer of another CAS club, a vendor, a CAS service provider, or previously requested to stay on my list, you will stay on. What GREAT weather timing we had in Jan. and Feb. Spring-like weekends for LSFSC and CVV matches. Then, back to winter. Like Feb., Mar. starts on Saturday! Both LSFSC and CVV match weekends will come as early as possible on the calendar. Herb Blair, ol' "Muleshoe Slick", is selling all of his Cowboy Action gear. H. W. Blair & Co. herb@hwblair.com. You new shooters should especially take a look at Herb's sale list. Herb is an FFL dealer ("Sutler"). See ad in the back pages of CA news. SASS has announced "Refer a Friend", on 1/23/14. Have a friend sign up as a new SASS member and you both will get an additional 3 months, free, on a 1-year membership. Go to SASS website for more details. It is a winwin-win for yourself, a friend, and CVV/LSFSC. That Sat. 1 start gives March 5 weekends. The bonus 5th weekend has the SASS Texas State Championship, "Jail Break '14" hosted by the Oakwood Outlaws. An entry form is one of our attachments with your CA News. Also, look for entry forms on the sign-in table, at the Ormsby Ranch office. If you want the Agarita Gazette sent to your , from The Plum Creek Shooting Society, contact John Soule (a.k.a. Long Juan) at: jsoule@scottdoug.com AN INTRODUCTION TO WILD BUNCH by Dusty Boddams SASS #1907 Never heard of such a game? Heard it s cowboy shoot n with a 1911? Well lets set the record straight! First off Wild Bunch matches are not cowboy matches with 1911 s. they do share all the good common traits. For instance WB is shot at the same locations sometimes on the same day as a cowboy match. Wild Bunch matches utilize the same targets as cowboy action but with different target presentation. in addition you will see some specialty targets presented and smaller targets that you won t see in cowboy. a different round count than found in cowboy. The inspiration for the Wild Bunch stages are drawn loosely from a movie directed by Sam Peckinpa called The Wild Bunch. I say loosely because basically it s the time frame era that is trying to be portrayed. Competitors costume in in the early 1900 s era with a lot of shooters choosing military garb that would be movie correct. That means if it looks good then it is good. You can dress just about how you want as long as you have a WW I or before look. Many of the cowboy shooters that indulge in both games just wear what they always wear. Some folks go all out and look like general Pershing should be barking orders at them. The military look is easily and cheaply found. Just buy a set of khaki work clothes from Walmart add a campaign hat and some collar insignias or/and canvas mil leggings and your set.

4 WILD BUNCH Continued Leather can be as simple as using your saga. holster and add some mag pouches or getting a correct reproduction of a military ww1 rig complete with canvas pouches. Before we get further I thought I heard a small whine golly gee mister I m not dressing up that s silly! the costuming requirement is a small part of Wild Bunch but yet because of the fun we have playing a gun game based on a certain era I feel it s quite appropriate. The really funny thing is when you talk to someone and they are against costuming because they are not going to play dress up I ask them this. Do you have a specific outfit that you wear hunting? Do you just have one outfit for all your hunting? What do you wear to an ISPC match how about an IDPA match? How about a 3 gun match? ever go to a wedding, funeral, court appearance, new year s eve ball, the stock yards, bowling or workout? Ever played golf or seen a golf game? The point is all the above require a certain wearing of attire which as you have guessed is costuming! Now on to the fun part. Here is what Wild Bunch matches are like and what it takes to play the game. First off Wild Bunch is considered a plus match meaning it is a harder more challenging match than a cowboy match.this is a game for the more seasoned shooter and like all SASS matches is not the place to learn gun handling. Target presentation for all guns will be further out than cowboy and there will be more of them. Pistol targets will be no closer than 7 yards, could be out to 25. Rifle targets no closer than 15 and could be out yards. The round count for pistol is usually per stage. Rifle up to ten per stage and shotgun around 6 per stage and we usually shoot 5-6 stages per day. Hardware stock mil-spec without any modifications is considered a traditional class pistol. Traditional class is shot one handed. 45acp only 1911 modern class this is basically a 1911 enhanced with beaver tail, sights, checkering etc. no laser, comps, no round butt, aluminum frame etc. has a weight limit. This is considered a modern class pistol and it may be used with one or two hands. 45acp only You are also allowed to shoot the stock misled pistol in modern class and use both hands. Notice both classes are 45acp only government model 5 barrel only The rifle- any sass legal lever action pistol caliber rifle caliber 40 minimum. The shotguns legal for WB are model 93/97reproductions original model 1897 s or reproductions. All original models 12 Winchesters in any configuration. Trench gun and riot gun models of the above are all legal in WB. All shotguns must be 12 gauges only. All pistols and rifles are subject to power factor. Ammo must make a minimum power factor of 150. This is the absolute floor and any less will get a match DQ for scoring purposes. All seasoned competitors do not try for the power factor floor but rather try for a power factor in the 160 s or greater to insure power factor under any condition will always be met. Of course as in cowboy, safety is the number one priority and lead ammo for all the above. Wild Bunch action shooting was started with a good solid set of rules that since it was a plus game it would also be a big bore game that had a solid conservative power factor to make the game have as level of playing field as possible. Also categories for shooters are kept simple Traditional men and women class Modern men and women class Remember how I said it s not cowboy with a 1911? Well one more thing to remember is Wild Bunch has its own set of rules with its own range officer certification. If a man or a round is dropped it can be retrieved. Of course we don t have the space or time to cover the rules but if you will go to the SASS web site click the Wild Bunch tab and open the rules it s all right there for you. I would like to strongly encourage anyone planning to attend a Wild Bunch match to look over and read the rules. Let s take a look at shooting a stage. You will take your action open long guns to the loading table along with your empty, mag free, holstered 1911 and start preparations for competition having already been briefed on round count for this stage you know that you need ten rifle rounds so with the rifle on the loading table pointed in the safe direction you load 10 rounds chamber empty. racking the slide on the model 12 you load 6 being careful to make sure the chamber is empty and the hammer is down. Unholstering the 1911 verify chamber empty hammer down a fresh mag loaded with 5 rounds is seated in the pistol. (a maximum of 5 rounds per magazine is the rule for Wild Bunch) six more mags with 5 rounds in each mag are held in reserve on your belt.

5 WILD BUNCH Continued When called to the line you stage the rifle and shotgun at the specified locations and proceed to the start area. Hands on table, you re ready to go. Shooter do you understand the course of fire? Lets dance! You say (having overheard another competitor say that line and you thought it sounded cool) beeeeep! Drawing your 45 you commence taking out the bad guys (in this case it s the steel targets presented to you) double tapping the first target group your gun quits working DANGIT slide is locked back. no wait it s just empty ejecting that spent mag replacing with a charged one emptying again. Now the slide is locked back again but it has to be to move to the next target engagement so moving to it ejecting that empty mag again new one in place and engaging two stationary targets and a falling tombstone plate rack a Nevada sweep is commenced for ten rounds. making sure the slide is locked back the pistol is placed on the table and left there as you run to the rifle 10 shots ten targets down! Now stepping over to the shotgun 6 reactionary plates 6 shells no problem steel commences to falling and now the stage is over. You lay the shotgun down walk over pick up the pistol show clear and holster retrieve the rifle and shotgun and head over to the unloading table and clear those as well. whew! Got that first one out of the way. The day continues on and the stages just get better suddenly it s realized the match has ended. To no one in particular and to everyone you tell them that was the most fun gun game you have ever played and that you are now addicted.. Welcome to Wild Bunch! The stages are always different with variable round counts and target presentation. The camaraderie found and the friendships made are outstanding. Wild Bunch truly reminds me of cowboy action shooting 20 years ago. What does this statement mean? Well everything or nothing. I guess you would have had to been there and done that. Wild Bunch is being shot all over the country right now. If you have a cowboy action shooting club close to you the odds are great that they are shooting matches now or they will in the future. From a practical standpoint Wild Bunch is a great game. You are shooting at reactionary targets. You are getting lots of trigger time with the star of the show the Lots of mag changes. Lots of different sized targets with various target presentation. Getting to run the pump guns at speed fully stoked and the lever rifles thrown in for good measure. No re tape of targets. No scoring of paper. Great high round count stages. THE MOST LEVEL PLAYING FIELD OF ANY SHOOTING SPORT. No arms race, no optics race, no gimmicks, no plastic speed technology. All this, and A maximum amount of fun. Various clubs have an open class to allow new shooters the opportunity to bring any 1911 along with any pump shotgun and any sass legal main match rifle and compete in a match or two not shooting for score to see if they like the game and want to gear up. I invite anyone interested in this great game of Wild Bunch to contact their local SASS club and make plans to attend one of the matches being held across the state.
