4 Choosig the best lie for the job Assess your sailig, determie the loads, select the best rope for the job So may differet ropes eed a little help choosig? Samso offers 20 differet ropes specifically for use as ruig riggig. Each is egieered to perform superbly uder a particular set of circumstaces. The choice may seem itimidatig. Armed with a little kowledge, ad a accurate assessmet of your sailig eeds ad what you expect from your lies, the choice becomes a lot more obvious. Photo Sharo Gree / Ultimate Sailig Choose the rope based o a accurate assessmet of the workig load The selectio guide o the ext page ca help idetify potetial ropes for several applicatios, but it all begis with a accurate assessmet of the loads they ll ecouter. Formulas for sheet loads are available i the back of this catalog, but cosider the followig: Halyard loads are best determied by your rigger. For sheets, halyards, or cotrol lies, aticipated loads are cosidered workig loads. The stadard workig load for ay Samso rope is 20% of the rated break stregth. For example, the total load for a ed-of-boom maisheet goig through a four-purchase sheave system may be calculated at 900 lb. Factorig i a 20% workig load, the rope s break stregth eeds to be five times the workig load, or 4,500 lb for this applicatio. Sythetic fibers : what are the differeces? Nylo was the first sythetic fiber widely used i ropes. Reasoably strog (much stroger tha the atural fibers it replaced), ylo is still used i dock ad achor lies where its excellet elasticity allows it to absorb shock loads. But for may sailig applicatios, elasticity is ot a desirable trait. The itroductio of polyester fiber allowed rope maufacturers to build ropes that were as strog as ylo, but with much less stretch, less wet-stregth loss, ad a higher coefficiet of frictio. Because it has excellet grip, it works well o wiches. Polyester ropes, particularly polyester double braids, became the stadard agaist which all ropes were measured. Polyester is still regarded as a excellet fiber for may marie applicatios ad is widely used for covers o highperformace, or high-modulus double braids. High-modulus fibers: which oe, for what, ad why? There are several moder high-modulus fibers, each with a uique set of characteristics. The challege of the rope desiger is to match these characteristics with the uique performace requiremets of the applicatio for which they are desigig. Dyeema is a high modulus polyethylee (HMPE) fiber with a particularly well balaced set of characteristics that allow it to be used i a variety of applicatios. Extremely lightweight (oe-seveth that of steel) with ultra-high stregth (at least as strog as steel wire at the same size), very low stretch, ad excellet abrasio, cut, ad UV resistace, it is well suited for use i halyards, cotrol lies, ad sheets. Withi the Dyeema family of HMPE fibers are several grades, each possessig differet characteristics that iclude icreasig levels of teacity, durability, ad resistace to creep. Samso uses Dyeema fiber or Dyeema -fiber bleds i more tha half of the lies that comprise the competitio-grade ruig riggig. Other high-modulus fibers iclude Techora, a aramid fiber that bleds very high stregth, low stretch, ad abrasio resistace with extreme heat resistace; Vectra, a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) fiber that has very high stregth ad very good resistace to heat; ad Zylo, or PBO fiber, which offers the highest stregth of all the high-modulus fibers; however, it must be protected from UV light. Techora, Vectra, ad Zylo are all exceptioally low-creep fibers. I some cases, Samso bleds fibers to take advatage of the relative properties of each of the compoets. Lightig Rope is a good example: the lightweight characteristic of Dyeema fiber is bleded with the stregth ad exceptioally low creep characteristics of Vectra fiber. The result is a rope that is lighter tha Validator-12, a all Vectra 12-strad, while sacrificig oly 5% of the stregth of AmSteel -Blue, a all Dyeema -fiber 12-strad lie. Class I ad Class II ropes: what are they? Samso ropes are classified ito two mai categories based o fiber type. Ropes maufactured usig the traditioal fibers of ylo, polyester, ad olefi are categorized as Class I. Those ropes made i whole or i part with ay of the highmodulus fibers such as Dyeema, Techora, Vectra, or Zylo are categorized as Class II. Double braids ad sigle braids: what s the differece? Samso iveted the double braid i the late 50s, whe ylo was still the kig of sythetic fibers. This costructio icorporates a braided core withi a braided cover, each carryig a equal percetage of the total load. This type of costructio is commo to lies that use the more traditioal sythetic fibers like polyester, olefi, ad ylo. I additio to carryig up to oe half of the load, the cover serves to protect the core from abrasio or ultraviolet degradatio, to provide grip o wiches or i clutches ad stoppers, ad to provide protectio from frictio-geerated heat. For applicatios that require higher stregth ad lighter weight tha traditioal Class I fibers provide, you will look to a core-depedat double braid. I this costructio, the core is made from Class II fibers ad serves as the stregth member while the cover is typically made of Class I fibers. 4 SamsoRope.com

5 Guide to Ruig Riggig Choosig the best lie for the job Sigle braids are ropes desiged without a separate core. Samso maufactures a wide variety of sigle braids. For sailig applicatios, the most commo sigle braid is a 12-strad lie. Where ecessary or desired, covers ca be added to sigle braids to protect them from exposure to heat, abrasio, or cuttig while i use. Samso maufactures Samso Ice ad Flavored Ice for this specific purpose. This is a specialty cover where Vectra ad PBO fibers are bleded to provide ehaced heat ad abrasio resistace. Alterately, a sailor may opt to strip the cover from a double braid i order to save additioal weight aloft for halyard applicatios. The cover remais itact i areas o the rope where the rope is cleated or wiched. Splicig techiques: why is kowig the class of my lie importat? Splicig techiques are differet betwee Class I ad Class II ropes ad reflect the differeces i stregths ad grip betwee the two groups. It is absolutely critical to use the correct splice for the class of rope beig used. The chart below ad each of the product specificatio pages desigate the class ad recommeded splicig techique. You d like to kow that your lies are cosistet from tack to sailor eed to tack. So, what happes whe a sythetic kow about rope is placed uder a load? elogatio? The first time a ew rope is loaded, the braid compacts slightly, ad depedig o the costructio, small helical chages take place. The result is a permaet extesio that will ot chage over the life of the rope. By cyclig the rope uder a load a umber of times before you use it i competitio, this costructioal elogatio ca be elimiated. Elastic elogatio (EE) is a characteristic of the fiber or fibers used i the costructio. It is that portio of the extesio that is immediately recoverable whe the load is released. Elastic elogatio is expressed as a percetage of the legth at a stadard load based o a percetage (10%, 20%, or 30%) of the breakig stregth. Elastic elogatio ca oly be reduced by movig up to a larger diameter lie, a lie with higher breakig stregth, or a lie with a lower measured elasticity. There is aother form of elogatio, called hysteresis, that is ot recovered immediately whe a load is released, but over hours or eve days. This is geerally egligible i the scheme of the racig sailor. Creep is it a problem for most sailors? Creep is the most misuderstood cocept of rope elogatio. It is defied as fiber deformatio (elogatio) due to molecular slippage uder a costat, static loadig situatio. Some fibers such as polypropylee ad HMPE exhibit the characteristics of creep, but if mior fluctuatios occur i the rate ad frequecy of load levels, these characteristics are egligible. Creep becomes problematic over time at costat loads. O a sailboat racig or cruisig a costat load is extremely Creep is measured over rare. The effect of tackig, ad chages i wid ad sail trim all create early a period of weeks, ot cotiuous chages i the loads uder hours or miutes. which your lies are subjected. Creep is ofte measured i state-of-the-art fibers by maitaiig costat, very high static loads over periods of weeks, ot hours or miutes. Not all HMPE fibers have the same creep characteristics. Dyeema SK90, used i Samso s AS-90, has bee specially developed for ehaced creep performace. Bledig a exceptioally low creep fiber like Vectra with Dyeema fiber with egligible creep, results i a lie with the exceptioally low creep of Vectra fiber, ad lighter weight tha a 100% Vectra fiber rope. 13

These products brig performace to ew levels: stroger, lighter, lower stretch lies that perform depedably race after race, tack after tack. Where the visio starts... Competitio spurs iovatio. Workig with riggers ad competitive racers, we get feedback o where high-performace ropes ofte see their greatest challeges. Flavored Ice was desiged to protect high-performace ropes from abrasio ad heat caused by frictio uder load. It bleds Vectra ad PBO fibers ito a cover-oly costructio that is applied to those areas of the rope that are subjected to high temperatures, eed to be cleated, or are ru through stoppers. Tested i the 07 TasPac race, this iovatio proved both effective ad reliable. Samso s Proge II ad AS-90 are two products that icorporate relatively ew fibers ito products that raise the performace bar for the highly competitive sailor. Samso s team of scietists ad egieers costatly look for ways to push the boudaries of traditioal rope makig ad rope performace i order to provide you with the best products available. Research, testig, ad special hadlig to esure performace... Before oe of the world s ew super fibers or other cuttig-edge techology makes its debut i the Samso product lie-up, it eeds to pass striget requiremets set up by Samso s team of R&D scietists ad egieers. This is where desig, performace, ad practicality fid balace. The art of a taleted rope desiger is brought to bear i ropes where two or more fibers are bleded to exploit the best characteristics of both fibers while overcomig the shortcomigs of either. XLS Extra was amog the first ropes to bled the reliability of MFP with the high stregth, light weight, ad low elogatio of Dyeema fiber ito a rope that was lighter, stroger, ad with lower elogatio, while beig relatively ecoomical compared to ropes with all high-modulus fiber cotet. The traditio cotiues with ropes like Lightig Rope, Validator SKB (bleded Vectra ad Dyeema fibers), ad Apex (a 12-strad bled of Dyeema ad MFP fibers). Other desig elemets iclude added coatigs, costructioal desig, chafe materials, hardware, etc. Aother cosideratio is special hadlig requiremets while maufacturig a rope. PBO is a case i poit. To maximize stregth i the fial product, uique procedures to limit UV exposure were developed. Specialized coatigs desiged to ehace performace ad logevity are applied at differet stages of productio, depedig o the rope ad the applicatios it is desiged for. 18 Fially, testig is a critical stage i the desig ad maufacture of ropes. Samso R&D maitais the largest capacity testig machie for sythetic rope i the idustry, capable of testig to 1.1 millio pouds. Samso s test methods exceed the idustry's stadard methods, icorporatig more striget specificatios tha most maufacturers. Testig for elogatio, breakig force, stiffess, ad abrasio resistace are all part of the procedure for every rope. Samples are braided, splices are tested, ad o product is fialized util all its characteristics are fully uderstood ad tested i real-world applicatios.

Gold-N-Braid uses a white ad gold ylo cover, while Solid Color lies are available i royal blue, avy, or black. Both excel wherever stregth, elastic elogatio, ad abrasio resistace are critical. Super Strog Super Strog is the highest stregth dock ad achor lie offered by Samso. It is costructed of a braided ylo core ad braided ylo cover. We apply our Pro-Gard marie fiish to further ehace this rope s stregth performace, particularly whe wet. It has a white cover with blue ad red tracers, ad has excellet elastic elogatio to meet the most demadig moorig coditios. Pro-Set-3 Samso combies a premium ylo with our four-stage maufacturig process ad heat stabilizatio to produce a truly premium 3-strad rope. This four-stage process creates a 3-strad rope with superior abrasio properties ad provides a log, depedable service life. Samso s stabilizatio process for Pro-Set-3 esures the rope will stay firm but flexible ad will ot shrik after beig used. May competig products are ot heat-stabilized, resultig i dramatic shrikage after beig wet for the first time. Coversely, Samso s uique stabilizatio process of the fiished rope results i less tha 2% residual shrikage ad a lie that does ot harde after exposure to the elemets.

23 Achor Lies Use the right scope, ad always protect from chafe 7:1 Scope = Water Depth 7 Use 1 foot of chai for each foot of boat legth betwee achor ad achor rode. Water depth = distace from chocks to bottom Achor Lie Scope The holdig power of ay achor is dramatically icreased whe the proper scope of achor lie is used. There should be eough achor rode o had to provide a scope of 7:1 (seve times the water depth at the achor) i all aticipated achorages. This will provide eough security for all but the heaviest of seas. Holdig power ca be further ehaced by usig a sectio of chai betwee the rope rode ad the achor. The combiatio lowers the agle of pull, causig most moder achors to bury-i, rather tha drag. Chafe Protectio Dock ad achor lies should be well protected from chafe caused by costat abrasio where lies cotact chocks or the rail, which ca cause the strogest lies to fail well before their ormal useful lifespa. All cotact poits should be covered with cavas, leather, chafig tape, or eve plastic tubig to prevet wear. Cosult with your local supplier to determie what chafe protectio product(s) is right for you. Achorig Securely TECH TIPS: ANCHORING There are two methods to coect your achor rode to the chai: a ropeto-chai splice, ad a eye splice with a thimble. The rope-to-chai splice allows the rope-chai iterface to pass through most gypsies o achor widlasses. Because this splice allows direct rope-to-chai cotact, it should be ispected frequetly for chafe ad remade if ecessary. The alterative a eye splice with a thimble, coected to the chai with a moused shackle (see iset photo) prevets direct rope-to-chai chafig, but will ot pass through the gypsies o most widlasses. Class I ropes are produced with o-high modulus fibers that impart the stregth ad stretch characteristics to the rope which have teacities of 15 grams/deier (gpd) or less ad a total stretch at break of 6% or greater. Class I Ropes are produced with traditioal fibers such as: olefi (polypropylee or polyethylee), ylo, ad polyester. Class II ropes are produced with high modulus fibers that impart the stregth ad stretch characteristics to the rope which have teacities greater tha 15 grams/deier (gpd) ad a total stretch at break of less tha 6%. Typical Class II ropes are produced with: HMPE (Dyeema or Spectra fibers), Aramid (Techora or Kevlar fibers), LCP (Vectra fiber), PBO (Zylo fiber), ad carbo fibers. Double Braid 26 SamsoRope.com

27 REFERENCE Elogatio Testig Methods Referece (EE) Refers to the portio of stretch or extesio of a rope that is immediately recoverable after the load o the rope is released. This recoverable tedecy is a primary result of the fiber (or fibers) used as opposed to the rope costructio. Each type of sythetic fiber iheretly displays a uique degree of elasticity. Relatively, HMPE fiber has a extremely low elasticity compared to ylo fiber. HYSTERESIS Refers to a recoverable portio of stretch or extesio over a period of time after a load is released. I measurig elastic recovery it is the recovery that occurs immediately whe a load is removed; thereafter, a remaiig small percetage of elastic recovery will occur slowly ad gradually over a period of hours or days. This retardatio i recovery is measured o a legth/time scale ad is kow as hysteresis or recovery over time. PERMANENT EXTENSION (PE) WHILE WORKING The amout of extesio which exists whe stress is removed but o time is give for hysteresis recovery. It icludes the o-recoverable ad hysteresis extesio as oe value ad represets ay icrease i the legth of a rope i a costat workig situatio such as durig repeated surges i towig or other similar cyclical operatios. The percetage of PE over the workig load rage is geerally i order of four or six percet for braided ropes ad two to three times as much for plaited. However, it will vary slightly with differet fibers ad rope costructios. Allowaces must be made for this factor i applicatios such as sub-surface moorig or whe usig devices that demad precise depth locatio ad measuremet. PERMANENT EXTENSION (PE) AFTER RELAXED That portio of extesio which, due to costructio deformatio (compactig of braid ad helical chages) ad some plastic deformatio of the yar fibers, prevets the rope from returig to its origial legth. CREEP (COLD FLOW) Fiber deformatio (elogatio) due to molecular slippage uder a costat, static loadig situatio. Fibers with this iheret characteristic display extremely low or egligible creep if mior fluctuatios occur i the rate ad/or frequecy of load levels. I rope form, this would apply to polypropylee, polyethylee ad HMPE fibers. New Rope Uloaded Iitial Legth 30 ft. Loaded Legth 40 ft. Total Stretch 10 ft. Load Applied 5 ft. A WORD ABOUT PUBLISHED STRENGTHS AND TESTING Because our ropes are asked to perform i the real world, our published stregths ad test results reflect as accurately as possible the coditios uder which they are iteded to be used. Sice early all ropes i actual use are termiated with a splice, publishig uspliced stregths does ot allow the customer to select the appropriate size ad stregth rope for his applicatio, ad to assure the utmost i safety ad legth of service life. Throughout this catalog, ad wherever stregths are oted, all published data are for spliced ropes. This esures that you are selectig sizes ad stregths based o real world coditios. Whe comparig our data to other stregths, please esure that spliced stregths are used. Testig methods at Samso Testig is a critical stage i the desig ad maufacture of ew ropes, ad i determiig retiremet criteria for used ropes. Samso has established test methods that comply with idustry stadard methods like CI-1500, with more striget specificatios ad testig istructios to elimiate wide toleraces or geeralized procedures. The result is more cosistet, reliable data for our customers, ad more accurate assessmet of retiremet criteria. 1.1 millio poud test machie Samso R&D maitais the largest capacity testig machie for sythetic rope i the idustry, capable of testig rope to failure up to 1.1 millio pouds. The machie is fully computer cotrolled, provides automated cycle loadig, ad precise elogatio measuremets. All data is acquired, stored, calculatios performed, ad reports geerated automatically. 28 Referece Rope Hadlig Bedig Radius REFERENCE REMOVING ROPE FROM REEL OR COIL Sythetic fiber ropes are ormally shipped o reels for maximum protectio while i trasit. The rope should be removed from the reel by pullig it off the top while the reel is free to rotate. This ca be accomplished by passig a pipe through the ceter of the reel ad jackig it up util the reel is free from the deck. Rope should ever be take from a reel lyig o its side. If the rope is supplied o a coil, it should always be ucoiled from the iside so that the first tur comes off the bottom i a couterclockwise directio. Oce these hockles appear, they caot be removed ad the rope is permaetly damaged. Sythetic-fiber rope should be removed from the reel by pullig it off the top while the reel is free to rotate. AVOID KINKING AND HOCKLING The cotiuous use of a lie o oe side of a wich or widlass is a commo abuse which ca reder a lie useless i a comparatively short time. Repeated haulig of a lie over a wich i a couterclockwise directio will exted the lay of the rope ad simultaeously shorte the twist of each strad. As this actio cotiues, kiks (or hockles) will develop. Oce these hockles appear, they caot be removed ad the rope is permaetly damaged at the poit of hocklig. If, o the other had, the lie is cotiuously hauled over a wich i a clockwise directio, the rope lay is shorteed ad the rope becomes stiff ad will kik readily. To avoid detrimetal coditios, the directio of turs over the wich should be alterated regularly. Clockwise turs are recommeded for the iitial use of a ew lie. If this practice is observed, the origial rope balace will be maitaied ad the lies will have a much loger useful life. A braided or plaited rope, beig torque-free, ca have twist iduced by costat workig o wiches ad capstas. If a twist develops, it ca easily be removed by couter-rotatig whe the rope is relaxed. Ay sharp bed i a rope uder load decreases its stregth substatially ad may cause premature damage or failure. I sizig the radius of bitts, fairleads ad chocks for best performace the followig guidelies are offered: Where a rope beds more tha 10 degrees aroud bitts or chocks or, for that matter, is bedig across ay surface, the diameter of that surface should ot be less tha 3 times the diameter of the rope. Stated aother way, the diameter of the surface should be at least three times the rope diameter. A 4-to-1 ratio (or larger) would be better yet because the durability of the rope icreases substatially as the diameter of the surface over which it is worked icreases. O a cleat whe the rope does ot bed radially aroud, the barrel of the cleat ca be oe half the rope circumferece (miimum). The ratio of the legth of a eye splice to the diameter of the object over which the eye is to be placed (bollard, bitt, cleat, etc.) should be a miimum 3-to-1 relatioship ad preferably 5-to-1. I other words, if you have a bollard 2 feet i diameter the eye splice should be 6 or 10 feet i legth. By usig this ratio the agle of the 2 legs of the eye splice at its throat will ot be so severe as to cause a partig or tearig actio at this poit (thimbles are ormally desiged with a 3-to-1 ratio). Surface diameter should be at least three times the rope diameter. This agle is more tha 10 degrees COILING AND FLAKING 3-strad ropes should be coiled i a clockwise directio (or i the directio of the lay of the rope) ad ucoiled i a couterclockwise directio to avoid kiks. A alterate ad perhaps better method is to flake out the lie figureeight fashio. This avoids puttig twist i the lie i either directio ad lesses the risk of kikig. Bollards with udersized hors. 2 ft. Miimum 6 Feet FIGURE-8 STOWAGE METHOD Great care must be take i the stowage ad proper coilig of 3-strad ropes to prevet the atural built-i twist of the lie from developig kiks ad damagig hockles. Braided ropes o the other had have o built-i twist ad are far more resistat to kikig. Eve if kiks do develop they caot develop further ito hockles. The best method for makig up braided rope for deck stowage is i figure-8 fashio either flaked flat o the deck or figure-8 vertically aroud bulkhead cleats. It should ot be had coiled i either directio as this merely puts tur ito the lie which may develop ito kiks whe payig-out. Remember that there is o tur or twist i the lie to begi with so do ot produce it by coilig. The best method for makig up braided rope for deck stowage is i figure-8 fashio either flaked flat o the deck or figure-8 vertically aroud bulkhead cleats. Sheave ad s Sheave diameters should be: > Twisted/Plaited Ropes = 10 times rope diameter > Braided Ropes = 8 times rope diameter To assure maximum efficiecy ad safety, sheaves for braided ropes should be o less tha 8 times the rope diameter. The sheave groove diameter should be o less tha 10 percet greater tha the rope diameter. The sheave groove should be roud i shape. Sheaves with V shaped grooves should be avoided, as they ted to pich ad damage the rope through excessive frictio ad crushig of the rope fibers. Sheave surfaces should be kept smooth ad free of burrs ad gouges. Bearigs should be maitaied to esure smooth rotatio of sheaves. 8-ich Sheave 1-ich Rope 8:1 Ratio Groove Rope No less tha 10% greater tha rope diamter 28 SamsoRope.com

29 REFERENCE Stadards of ad Determiatio Residual Referece WORKING LOADS Workig loads are for rope i good coditio with appropriate splices, i ocritical applicatios ad uder ormal service coditios. Workig loads are based o a percetage of the approximate breakig stregth of ew ad uused rope of curret maufacture. For the 3-strad, 8-strad, 12-strad ad double braid rope products depicted i this maual, whe used uder ormal coditios, the workig load percetage is 20% of published stregths. Normal workig loads do ot cover dyamic coditios such as shock loads or sustaied loads, or do they cover where life, limb or valuable property are ivolved. I these cases a lower workig load must be used. A higher workig load may be selected oly with expert kowledge of coditios ad professioal estimates of risk, if the rope has bee ispected ad foud to be i good coditio, ad if the rope has ot bee subject to dyamic loadig (such as sudde drops, subs or pickups), excessive use, elevated temperatures, or exteded periods uder load. Normal Workig Loads Normal workig loads are ot applicable whe rope has bee subject to dyamic loadig. Wheever a load is picked up, stopped, moved or swug there is a icreased force due to dyamic loadig. The more rapidly or suddely such actios occur, the greater the icrease will be. I extreme cases, the force put o the rope may be two, three, or eve more times the ormal load ivolved. Examples could be ropes used as a tow lie, pickig up a load o a slack lie, or usig rope to stop a fallig object. Dyamic effects are greater o a low elogatio rope such as polyester tha o a high elogatio rope such as ylo, ad greater o a short rope tha o a log oe. Therefore, i all such applicatios ormal workig loads as give do ot apply. Dyamic loadig For dyamic loadig applicatios ivolvig severe exposure coditios, or for recommedatios o special applicatios, cosult the maufacturer. Dager to Persoel Persos should be wared agaist the serious dager of stadig i lie with a rope uder tesio. Should the rope part, it may recoil with cosiderable force ad speed. I all cases where ay such risks are preset, or where there is ay questio about the load ivolved or the coditio of use, the workig load should be substatially reduced ad the rope properly ispected before every use. Splicig ad Kots Splices should be used istead of kots wheever possible because kots ca decrease rope stregth up to 50%. Whe splices are used, always use the maufacturer s recommeded splicig procedures. Whe kots are used, be sure to take ito cosideratio the kot s correspodig reductio to the rope stregth ad adjust your workig load accordigly. Rope Ispectio Avoid usig rope that shows sigs of agig ad wear. If i doubt, destroy the used rope. No type of visual ispectio ca be guarateed to accurately ad precisely determie the actual residual stregth. Whe the fibers show wear i ay give area, the rope should be re-spliced, dowgraded, or replaced. Check the lie regularly for frayed strads ad broke yars. Pulled strads should be re-threaded ito the rope if possible. A pulled strad ca sag o a foreig object durig rope operatio. Both outer ad ier rope fibers cotribute to the stregth of the rope. Whe either is wor, the rope is aturally weakeed. Ope the strads of the rope ad look for powdered fiber, which is oe sig of iteral wear. A heavily used rope will ofte become compacted or hard which idicates reduced stregth. The rope should be discarded if this coditio exists. Avoid all Abrasive Coditios All rope will be severely damaged if subjected to rough surfaces or sharp edges. Chocks, bitts, wiches, drums ad other surfaces must be kept i good coditio ad free of burrs ad rust. Pulleys must be free to rotate ad should be of proper size to avoid excessive wear. Avoid Chemical Exposure Rope is subject to damage by chemicals. Cosult the maufacturer for specific chemical exposure, such as solvets, acids, ad alkalis. Cosult the maufacturer for recommedatios whe a rope will be used where chemical exposure (either fumes or actual cotact) ca occur. Avoid Overheatig Heat ca seriously affect the stregth of sythetic ropes. The temperatures at which 50% stregth loss ca occur are polypropylee 250 F, ylo 325 F, polyester 350 F. Whe usig rope where the temperature exceeds these levels (or if it is too hot to hold), cosult the maufacturer for recommedatios as to the size ad type of rope for the proposed cotiuous heat exposure coditios. Whe usig ropes o a capsta or wich, care should be exercised to avoid surgig while the capsta or wich head is rotatig. The frictio from the slippage causes localized overheatig which ca melt or fuse sythetic fibers, resultig i severe loss of tesile stregth. Storage All rope should be stored i a clea, dry area, out of direct sulight, ad away from extreme heat. It should be kept off the floor o racks to provide vetilatio udereath. Never store o a cocrete or dirt floor, ad uder o circumstaces should cordage ad acid or alkalis be kept i the same viciity. Some sythetic rope (i particular polypropylee ad polyethylee) may be severely weakeed by prologed exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays uless specifically stabilized ad/or pigmeted to icrease UV resistace. UV degradatio is idicated by discoloratio ad the presece of spliters ad slivers o the surface of the rope. 29

30 Rope Ispectio ad Retiremet ROPE LIFE FACTORS AND DAMAGE ASSESSMENT There are basically 3 steps to cosider i providig the logest possible service life, the safest coditios ad log rage ecoomy for ropes: selectio, Usage, ad Retiremet. The use of rope for ay purpose subjects it to frictio, bedig ad tesio. All rope hardware, sheaves, rollers, capstas, cleats, as well as kots are, i varyig degrees, damagig to the rope. It is importat to uderstad that rope is a movig, workig, stregth member ad eve uder the most ideal coditios will lose stregth durig use i ay applicatio. Maximizig the safety of rope performace is directly related to how stregth loss is maaged ad makig sure ropes are retired from service before they ca create a dagerous situatio. Ropes are serious workig tools ad used properly will give cosistet ad reliable service. The cost of replacig a rope is extremely small whe compared to the physical damage or persoel ijury a wor out rope ca cause. 1. SELECTION Select the right rope for the job i the first place. Selectig a rope ivolves evaluatig a combiatio of factors. Some of these factors are straightforward like comparig rope specificatios. Others are less qualitative like a preferece for a specific color or how a rope feels i your had. Cuttig corers, reducig applicatio factors, sizes or stregths o a iitial purchase creates uecessary replacemets, potetially dagerous coditios ad icreases log term costs. Fiber ad costructio beig equal, a larger rope will out-last a smaller rope because of the greater surface wear distributio. By the same toke, a stroger rope will out-last a weaker oe because it will be used at a lower percetage of its break stregth with less chace of over stressig. STRENGTH Whe give a choice betwee ropes, select the strogest of ay give size. A load of 200 pouds represets 2% of the stregth of a rope with a breakig stregth of 10,000 pouds. The same load represets 4% of the stregth of a rope that has a breakig stregth of 5,000 pouds. The weaker rope is havig to work harder ad as a result will have to be retired sooer. ELONGATION It is well accepted that ropes with lower elogatio uder load will give you better load cotrol, which is a big help at complicated job sites. However, a rope with lower elogatio that is shock loaded ca fail without warig eve though it appears to be i good shape. Low elogatig ropes should be selected with the highest possible stregth. Twisted rope has lower stregth ad more stretch. Braided rope has higher stregth ad lower stretch. FIRMNESS Select ropes that are firm ad roud ad hold their shape durig use. Soft or mushy ropes will sag easily ad abrade quickly causig accelerated stregth loss. A loose or mushy rope will almost always have higher break stregths tha a similar rope that is firm ad holds its shape because the fibers are i a straighter lie, which improves stregth but compromises durability. AND ABRASION Rope costructio plays a importat role i resistace to ormal wear ad abrasio. Braided ropes have a basically roud, smooth costructio that teds to flatte out somewhat o a bearig surface. This distributes the wear over a much greater area, as opposed to the crows of a 3-strad or, to a lesser degree, o a 8-strad rope. All ropes should be protected agaist sharp ad abrasive surfaces. Wire ropes ted to score ad gouge chocks ad bitts creatig cuttig edges that ca damage sythetic ropes. Weld beads o repaired capstas, fairleads, etc. are equally damagig uless dressed dow smoothly. 30 Referece SamsoRope.com 2. USAGE Use rope properly: do ot abuse or shock load it. Observe recommeded usage factors for bedig ad work loads. Keep ropes clea ad elimiate abrasio wheever possible. REFERENCE WORKING LOADS Workig loads are the 6-strad 20% loads that a rope is subjected to i everyday 8-strad 20% activity. They are ormally expressed as a 12-strad 20% percetage of ew rope stregth ad should ot Double Braid 20% exceed 20%. A poit to remember is that a rope may be severely overloaded or shock loaded i use without breakig. However, damage ad stregth loss may have occurred without ay visible idicatio. The ext time the rope is used uder ormal workig loads the acquired weakess ca cause it to break. Do ot blame the rope, it was simply overloaded ad failed from what is kow as fatigue. BENDING Ay sharp bed i a rope uder load decreases its stregth substatially ad may cause premature damage ad failure. Sheave diameters o rotatig sheave blocks should be 10 times the rope diameter for twisted ropes ad 8 times the rope diameter for braided ropes. The diameter o fixed pi termiatios should be at least 3 times the rope diameter (i.e. the bedig radius for 1/2" ropes should be 1-1/2"). KNOTS While it is true that a kot reduces rope stregth, it is also true that a kot is a coveiet way to accomplish rope attachmet. The stregth loss is a result of the tight beds that occur i the kot. With some kots, ropes ca lose up to 50% of their stregth. It is vital that the reductio i stregth by the use of kots be take ito accout whe determiig the size ad stregth of a rope to be used i a applicatio. To avoid kot stregth reductio, it is recommeded that a rope be spliced accordig to the maufacturer s istructios. Splice termiatios are used i all our ropes to determie ew ad uused tesile stregths. Therefore, wheever possible, spliced termiatios should be used to maximize the rope stregth for ew ad used ropes. ROPE STORAGE Keep your ropes as clea ad dry as possible ad store them i a coil away from heat sources. SHOCK LOADS Shock loads are simply a sudde chage i tesio from a state of relaxatio or low load to oe of high load. Ay sudde load that exceeds the work load by more tha 10% is cosidered a shock load. The further a object falls, the greater the impact. Sythetic fibers have a memory ad retai the effects of beig overloaded or shock loaded ad ca fail at a later time eve though loaded withi the work load rage. 3. RETIREMENT Retire rope from use whe it has reached its discard poit. RECOMMENDED WORK LOAD LIMIT: WORKING LOAD For catalogued ropes: Rope Costructio Percetage of Break 3-strad 20% Oe of the most frequetly asked questios is Whe should I retire my rope? The most obvious aswer is before it breaks. But, without a thorough uderstadig of how to ispect it ad kowig the load history, you are left makig a educated guess. Ufortuately, there are o defiitive rules or idustry guidelies to establish whe a rope should be retired because there are so may variables that affect rope stregth. Factors like load history, bedig radius, abrasio, chemical exposure or some combiatio of those factors, make retiremet decisios difficult. Ispectig your rope should be a cotiuous process of observatio before, durig ad after each use. I sythetic fiber ropes the amout of stregth loss due to abrasio ad/or flexig is directly related to the amout of broke fiber i the rope s cross sectio. After each use, look ad feel alog every ich of the rope legth ispectig for abrasio, glossy or glazed areas, icosistet diameter, discoloratio, ad icosistecies i texture ad stiffess. Uderstadig the Rope Desig/Costructio: It is first importat to uderstad the desig of the specific rope i use. Most ropes are desiged to have features specifically tailored to their applicatio. These features ca lead to miscoceptios durig visual ispectios. Whe a rope has a braided cover, it is oly possible to visually ispect the cover (which, at best, carries oly 50% of the load). Rope desigs utilizig HMPE fibers will show iitial rapid abrasio util the rope has a fuzzy appearace this appearace actually acts as a protective layer. DETERMINING THE AVERAGE CONDITION OF THE ROPE The average coditio of a rope ca be a importat factor i determiig the rope s retiremet. To determie the average coditio, walk the etire legth of the rope ad documet its overall coditio. May ropes ca be classified by the total amout of overall wear ad clealiess.

31 REFERENCE Referece Rope Ispectio ad Retiremet Figure 1 New rope Figure 2 Used rope Figure 3 Severely abraded rope Figure 4 Ispect for iteral abrasio Figure 5 Ispect for iteral abrasio Figure 6 Compare surface yars with iteral yars ABRASION Whe the rope is first put ito service the outer filamets of the rope will quickly fuzz up (Fig. 2). This is the result of these filamets breakig ad this rougheed surface actually forms a protective cushio ad shield for the fibers udereath. This coditio should stabilize, ot progress. If the surface roughess icreases (Fig. 3), excessive abrasio is takig place ad stregth is beig lost. As a geeral rule for sigle braid ropes, whe there is 25% or more wear from abrasio the rope should be retired from service. I other words, if 25% or more of the fiber is broke or wor away the rope should be removed from service. With 3-strad ropes, 10% or more wear is accepted as the retiremet poit. LOCATE AREAS DEVIATING FROM AVERAGE May times a rope will have areas that are routiely used aroud a bit, through a chock, or buried o the wich drum. These areas typically have differet wear patters tha the average coditio of the rope. Pay close attetio to these areas i the future ad frequetly examie them for rapid chages i appearace. Look closely at both the ier ad outer fibers. Whe either is wor the rope is obviously weakeed. Ope the strads ad look for powdered fiber, which is oe sig of iteral wear. Estimate the iteral wear to estimate total fiber abrasio. If total fiber loss is 20%, the it is safe to assume that the rope has lost 20% of its stregth as a result of abrasio. Iteral abrasio ca be determied by pullig oe strad away from the others ad lookig for powdered or broke fiber filamets (Fig. 4 ad Fig. 5). To determie the extet of outer fiber damage from abrasio, a sigle yar i all abraded areas should be examied. The diameter of the abraded yar should the be compared to a portio of the same yar or a adjacet yar of the same type that has bee protected by the strad crossover area ad is free from abrasio damage. (Fig. 6). It should be oted that comparig diameters of the yars does ot give a accurate measure of the retaied stregth. Sice the stregth should deped o the cross-sectioal area of the yar, a diameter differece aloe will uderestimate the true abrasio reductio. If the diameter of the abraded yar is 1/2 the diameter of the iteral yar, the stregth of the abraded yar is early 1/4 that of the iteral yar. Determiig the extet of fiber loss due to abrasio ca be difficult. Sice all the strads are twisted, the outer fibers, which are the most proe to abrasio damage, rotate through the rope s legth. Therefore o a sigle strad, the fibers that have bee abraded o oe pick, are ot ecessarily the fibers beig abraded o the ext. However, over a log distace, a sigle yar could have the majority of fiber loss due to abrasio. GLOSSY OR GLAZED AREAS Glossig or glazig ca occur from two differet mechaisms. The most commo ad relatively beig form of glossig or glazig o a rope is geerally caused by compressio (Fig.7), which typically occurs whe the rope is woud o the wich drum, Figure 7 Compressed areas aroud bits, or through chocks or staples. This form of glossig ca be determied o 8- ad 12-strad products by compressig the rope legth wise formig a bird cage (Fig.8). After umerous bird cage cycles the glossy regio will become more pliable ad begi to Figure 8 Bird cage resemble ormal rope. If the glazed sectio remais hardeed, this could be a sig of heat damage. Heat damaged rope typically has more stregth loss tha the amout of melted fiber idicates. Fibers adjacet to the melted areas are probably damaged from excessive heat eve though they appear ormal. It is reasoable to assume that the melted fiber has damaged a equal amout of adjacet umelted fiber. INCONSISTENT DIAMETER Ispect for flat areas, bumps or lumps. This ca idicate core or iteral damage from overloadig or shock loads ad is usually sufficiet reaso to replace the rope. DISCOLORATION With use, all ropes get dirty. Be o the lookout for areas of discoloratio which could be caused by chemical cotamiatio. Determie the cause of the discoloratio ad replace the rope if it is brittle or stiff. INCONSISTENCY IN TEXTURE AND STIFFNESS Ca idicate excessive dirt or grit embedded i the rope or shock load damage ad is usually reaso to replace the rope. TEMPERATURE Whe usig rope, frictio ca be your best fried or worst eemy if it is ot maaged properly. By defiitio, frictio creates heat, the greater the frictio the greater the heat buildup. Heat is a eemy to sythetic fiber ad elevated temperatures ca drastically reduce the stregth ad/or cause rope melt-through. Charrig poit High temperatures ca be achieved whe surgig rope o a capsta or drum ed, checkig ropes o bitts, ad ruig over stuck or o-rollig sheaves or rollers. Each rope s costructio ad fiber type will yield a differet coefficiet of frictio (reluctace to slip) i a ew ad used state. It is importat to uderstad the operatioal demads ad esure the size, rope costructio ad fiber type be take ito accout to miimize heat buildup. Never let ropes uder tesio rub together or move relative to oe aother. Eough heat to melt the fibers ca buildup ad cause the rope to fail as quickly as if it had bee cut with a kife. Always be aware of areas of heat buildup ad take steps to miimize it; uder o circumstaces let ay rope come i cotact with a steam lie or ay other hot surfaces. The stregth of a used rope ca be determied by testig but the rope is destroyed i the process so the ability to determie the retiremet poit before it fails i service is essetial. That ability is based o a combiatio of educatio i rope use ad costructio alog with good judgmet ad experiece. The critical ad meltig temperatures for sythetic fibers are listed below: Fiber Type Critical Temp. Meltig Temp. 32 Glossary Commo Cordage Terms ABRASION RESISTANCE: The ability of a fiber or rope to withstad surface wear ad rubbig due to motio agaist other fibers or rope compoets (iteral abrasio), or a cotact surface such as wraps o a wich drum (exteral abrasio), which ca be a portio of the rope itself. BLOCK CREEL: A method of rope makig where a give legth of rope is produced from a rope-makig machie where all the subcompoets of the rope structure are cotiuous without splices. The term arises from fillig all creels or bobbis to maximum (block creels) ad eds the rope-makig process whe the first oe is empty. BRAID:. A rope or textile structure formed by a braidig process. v. The itertwiig of strads i a braidig process to produce a tubular rope structure. BRAID, DOUBLE: A rope costructed from a ier hollow braided rope (core) that has aother hollow braided rope costructed aroud its exterior (cover). Core ad cover may be either plai or twill braid ad both share ay load o the rope, but ot ecessarily i equal amouts. Also called braido-braid. BRAID, HOLLOW (Also: Braid, Sigle Braid, Diamod): A sigle braid rope costructio of either plai or twill braid. The ceter is hollow. O the surface all yars are parallel to the axis. BRAID, SOLID: A cylidrical braid i which each strad alterately passes uder ad over oe or more of the other strads of the rope while all strads are rotatig aroud the axis with the same directio of rotatio. O the surface, all yars appear to be parallel to the axis. BRAIDER SPLICE: I a braided rope, the cotiuatio of a sigle iterrupted strad (or multiple strads) with aother idetical strad that is braided from the same carrier. The iterrupted ad replacemet strads are arraged i parallel over some distace, ad are buried, or tucked, ito the braid to secure them ito the braid. To maitai maximum stregth, the strads should overlap oe aother for a sufficiet distace. BREAKING LENGTH: A coveiet term for comparig the stregth-to-weight ratio of textile structures from oe product to aother. The calculated legth of a specime whose weight is equal to the breakig load. BREAKING STRENGTH: For cordage, the omial force (or load) that would be expected to break or rupture a sigle specime i a tesile test coducted uder a specified procedure. O a group of like specimes it may be expressed as a average or as a miimum based o statistical aalysis. Note: Breakig force refers to a exteral force applied to a idividual specime to produce rupture, whereas breakig stregth preferably should be restricted to the characteristic average force required to rupture several specimes of a sample. While the breakig stregth is umerically equal to the breakig force for a idividual specime, the average breakig force observed for two or more specimes of a specific sample is referred to or used as the breakig stregth of the sample. BREAKING STRENGTH, MINIMUM: Cordage Istitute stadard. A value based o a statistically sigificat umber of breakig load tests ad the stadard deviatio used to establish the miimum value. CLASS I ROPE: Rope costructios produced with o-high-modulus fibers that impart the stregth ad stretch characteristics to the rope that have teacities of 15 grams/deier (gpd) or less ad a total stretch at break of 6% or greater. Typical Class I ropes are produced with traditioal fibers such as: olefi (polypropylee or polyethylee), ylo, ad polyester. These fibers ca be used i combiatio or sigularly i the various rope costructios such as: 3-strad, 8-strad, 12-strad braids, double braids or coredepedet braids. CLASS II ROPE: Rope costructios produced with high modulus fibers that impart the stregth ad stretch characteristics to the rope that have teacities greater tha 15 grams/deier (gpd) ad a total stretch at break of less tha 6%. Typical Class II ropes are produced with: HMPE (Dyeema fiber or Spectra ), Aramid (Techora or Kevlar ), LCP (Vectra ), PBO (ZYLON ) ad carbo fibers. Also, ay rapidly applied load to cordage that may chage its properties sigificatly whe compared to slowly applied loads. EXTRUSION: For polymer filamets. The process of producig filamets by forcig a polymer through a die. FATIGUE: The tedecy of a material to weake or fail durig alterate tesio-tesio or tesiocompressio cycles. I cordage, particularly at loads well below the breakig stregth, this degradatio is ofte caused by iteral abrasio of the fibers ad yars but may also be caused by fiber damage due to compressio. Some fibers develop cracks or splits that cause failure, especially at relatively high loads. FIBER: A log, fie, very flexible structure that may be wove, braided, or twisted ito a variety of fabrics, twie, cordage, or rope. FINISH: A oil, emulsio, lubricat or the like, applied to fibers to prevet damage durig textile processig or to improve performace durig use of the product. HYDROLYSIS: The attack of the water ios o polymeric molecules, which results i polymer chai scissio ad loss of the fiber s physical properties. 32 SamsoRope.com
