3 Introduction This instruction manual will be used to easily teach anyone ranging from ages 12 and up to tie a tie, using different knots for different occasions. Such occasions include a job interview, a school dance, or even a formal party. The knots that we will cover in this manual will be teaching you will be the Simple, the Prince Albert, the Windsor, and the Murrell. The instructions will be separated by difficulty and will follow a set of pictures for each step. You will have to provide the materials yourself so if you do not have any of the necessary materials listed, then they will need to be bought, but luckily you will only need a few items. The setup is very simple and will go along with the materials hand in hand. If you run into any problems while tying your tie, there is a section known as the trouble shooting page, which will tell you what to do when you run into such a problem. Only the most frequent problems that people come across will be on the troubleshooting page. You will even be told how to clean up any materials you used, such as where to discard or place them when you are done. All of these sections will be on the table of content page, so if you ever get lost just refer to that page and you can easily locate the page you need to be on. 2
4 Materials Required: Dress Tie Dress Shirt Yourself (Hands) Instructions Optional: Mirror Extra Dress Tie Before starting tying your tie don t forget to: Wash and dry your hands to avoid stains Choose the dress tie of your preference Choose the dress shirt of your preference Know what knot you want to tie Place yourself in front of mirror (if applicable) for better viewing 3

9 Care & Cleaning of Your Ties Proper Untying While it is popular to simply pull the narrow end through the knot to remove the necktie, such an action can damage the fabric. If your tie is made of especially fragile material or is expensive it is recommended that you follow the reverse of the tying procedure when removing your necktie. Storage Tie fabric is much more fragile than others and is highly impressionable. Never wad or fold your ties or keep them stored in a dresser or drawer. You can ensure the fabric stays wrinkle-free by simply draping the unfolded tie over a coat hanger or tie rack and hanging in your closet. If you are traveling and must store your ties in a bag, fold the tie gently into fours and store in the pocket of your suit s jacket. Simple Cleaning If you accidentally stain your tie, cleaning must commence as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. For basic stains, wipe the stained area with cold seltzer water or club soda. For greasy stains, sprinkle a small portion of talcum powder on the blot. Leave the powder sitting for a few hours, and the grease will be absorbed into the talcum. After the grease has been absorbed, brush away any remaining powder. 8
10 If your tie gets wrinkled, simply hang it up in your bathroom while you are taking a shower. The steam combined with heat from the shower will cause most wrinkles to fall. Do not take the tie into the shower with you. Tie Tying Troubleshooting If your tie is too short. o Go to to calculate the length your tie needs to be. The tie should touch the top of your belt. If your tie is too long. o Try tying a larger knot. The tie should stay above the belt buckle. If you are wearing a novelty tie. o Take it off. Wear ties that compliment your outfit. If the long-tail is showing. o Try pinning the tail with a safety pin to the proper part of the tie. If you are wearing a torn ties. o Take it off. Wear ties that look new. If you are wearing a loose tie. o Make sure there is no space between the collar of your shirt and your neck. If you stain your tie while wearing it. o Treat the stain immediately. Blot the stain with a clean cloth dampened with club soda, avoid rubbing. 9
