NO. 8440) For keeping the adhesive warm in cooler weather, the Power-Fast Cartridge Heater mounts directly into the tool. The heater will maintain the cartridge temperature at approximately 90 F. for easy dispensing. For use on Power-Fast Manual Tools (Cat. No. s 8416 and 8418) or Pneumatic Tools (Cat. No. s 8407 and 8419). OPERATION PROCEDURES CARTRIDGE HEATER ESTIMATE GUIDE Using a screw driver, install on the appropriate Power-Fast tool frame. Remove plastic support straps if necessary to provide clearance for the heater. Insert the proper cartridge into the Power- Fast tool. Plug the heater into an approved electrical outlet which is protected using a ground fault interruption (GFI) circuit. Allow the epoxy to heat to the proper temperature. Material should be conditioned to 60 F. minimum prior to yyy The following chart shows the approximate time required to heat a cartridge based on its initial temperature. Actual results may vary depending upon the air temperature and cartridge size Initial Cartridge Temperature ( F) Time (minutes)

2 162 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES - SOLID BASE MATERIALS Drill a hole to the size and embedment required. The tolerances of the drill bit used should meet the requirements of ANSI Standard B Starting from the bottom or back of the anchor hole, blow clean with compressed air, brush the hole with a nylon brush, and blow it clean again. Vacuuming only is not sufficient. Blow out bulbs generally do not provide enough dust removal for most drilled anchor holes. Holes should be clean and sound. They may be dry or damp, but should be free of standing water or frost. If using reinforcing bar, be sure the bar will fit into the drilled hole. If a larger hole is required, the diameter should be as close as possible to the diameter of the reinforcing bar. Prior to dispensing into anchor hole, visually inspect that adhesive components are uniformly mixed. Fill the hole approximately half way with adhesive starting from the bottom or back of the anchor hole. Slowly withdraw the static mixing nozzle as the hole fills to avoid creating air pockets. Push the threaded rod or reinforcing bar into the anchor hole while turning slightly to ensure positive distribution of the adhesive. Be sure the rod is fully seated at the bottom of the hole and that some adhesive has flowed from the top of the hole. The threaded rod or reinforcing bar used should be free of dirt, grease, oil, or other foreign material. Allow the adhesive to cure for the specified time prior to applying any load. Do not disturb or load the anchor until it is fully cured. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES - HOLLOW BASE MATERIALS Drill a hole to the size and embedment for the required screen size. The tolerances of the drill bit used should meet the requirements of ANSI B Starting from the bottom or back of the anchor hole, blow the hole clean with compressed air, brush the hole with a nylon brush and blow it clean again.vacuuming only is not sufficient. Blow out bulbs generally do not provide enough dust removal for most drilled anchor holes. Prior to dispensing into screen tube, visually inspect that adhesive components are uniformly mixed. Fill the screen tube with adhesive starting from the bottom of the screen. The screen tube should be completely filled prior to inserting it in the anchor hole. Insert the filled screen tube into the anchor hole until it is fully seated at the required embedment. Push the threaded rod into the screen while turning slightly to ensure positive dispersing of the adhesive. Be sure the rod is fully inserted down to the end of the screen tube. The threaded rod or reinforcing bar used should be free of dirt, grease, oil, or other foreign material. Allow the adhesive to cure for the specified time prior to applying any load. Do not disturb or load the anchor until it is fully cured. Prior to use read product label, Material Safety Data Sheet and injection tool instructions.

Depending upon anchor application, governing building code and version of Power-Fast Epoxy used, higher factors may need to be applied. Refer to the general section entitled Evaluation of Test Data that appears earlier in this manual for current industry standards. The design professional familiar with the actual installation should be consulted. The allowable steel strength values are based on the AISC Manual of Steel Construction (Ninth Edition). Values for ASTM A193 Grade B7 steel rod are based on A325 capacities. The allowable load used should be the lesser of the bond or steel strength. ALLOWABLE TENSION ANCHOR DRILL EMBED. ALL. 11 171 DESIGN CRITERIA BASE MATERIAL THICKNESS The minimum recommended thickness of solid concrete or masonry base material, BMT, when using an adhesive anchor is 125% of the embedment to be used. For example, when installing an anchor to a depth of 4", the base material should be at least 5" thick. Conversely, the maximum embedment should be 80% of the base material thickness. If a concrete slab is 10" thick, an 8" depth would be the maximum recommended anchor embedment. This does not apply to products designed for installation in hollow base materials. D BMT ADHESIVE ANCHOR SPACING AND EDGE DISTANCE Adhesive type anchors can be installed closer to the edge of a concrete slab than mechanical anchors with no cracking of the base material. The published ultimate and allowable working loads are based on testing conducted at the spacing and edge distance required to obtain maximum load and should be reduced to account for decreased spacing and edge distance. The reduction load factors listed are cumulative. For example, the allowable working load for an anchor which is installed at a spacing and an edge distance less than that required for maximum load capacity would be multiplied by the appropriate factor from both the spacing and edge distance tables. The factors are normally applied to the allowable working load of the adhesive resin and then compared to the allowable strengths of the steel anchor rods used. See the Design Example featured earlier in this manual. S S E D = Anchor Size S = Spacing E = Edge Distance BMT = Base Material Thickness COMBINED LOADING For anchors loaded in both shear and tension, the combination of loads should be proportioned as follows based on the Uniform Building Code: T 5 /3 () S VS T A () V A Where: Ts = Applied Service Tension Load TA = Allowable Tension Load Vs = Applied Service Shear Load VA = Allowable Shear Load Dependent upon the election to conduct certain optional independent test procedures, many ICBO evaluated products are currently analyzed more conservatively with the following proportion. To obtain the maximum working load in tension or shear, a spacing of 8 anchor diameters (8D) or greater should be used. The minimum recommended anchor spacing is 4 anchor diameters (4D) at which point the allowable working load for the adhesive resin should be reduced by 30%. Anchor spacing closer or less than 4 diameters (4D) need to be field tested. Actual base material conditions will determine any applicable reduction factor. The anchor holes should be prepared following the standard installation guidelines with the following exceptions. Special care should be taken to clean the anchor hole as a slurry of concrete paste tends to form on the walls of the anchor hole when drilling under water. To inject the epoxy, insert the mixing nozzle to the bottom or rear of the anchor hole. Slowly withdraw the nozzle as the anchor hole is filled to ensure that the water is displaced from the hole and that no air pockets are formed. The anchor hole should be filled completely with epoxy prior to inserting the anchor rod. The setting time of Power-Fast in submerged applications depends upon the base material temperature as listed in the material properties section. Laboratory tests and field experience have shown that a decrease of 15 to 20% in the ultimate tension load capacity can be expected for an anchor which is installed under water. The design professional should include this reduction in his calculations. If the tension capacities are critical, a job site test is recommended. 1"

13 173 INSTALLATION OF ANCHORS OVERHEAD Prior to installing adhesive anchors overhead or in walls, consult with the governing building authority to determine the requirements for fire safety guidelines. The effect of elevated temperature on Power-Fast is shown in the material properties section. Power-Fast Epoxy can be used for the installation of threaded anchor rod overhead. The anchor holes should be prepared following the standard installation guidelines with the following exceptions. After the anchor hole is drilled and cleaned, insert the proper size anchor seal plug into the hole until the rim of the plug is fully seated against the base material. Insert the Power-Fast mixing nozzle through the cross cut opening of the anchor seal plug. Hold the plug in place and begin filling the anchor hole half way with Power-Fast Epoxy starting from the bottom or rear of the anchor hole. Insert the threaded rod through the cross cut opening of the anchor seal plug. Turn the rod slightly to ensure proper distribution of the epoxy. Be sure that the anchor rod is fully seated at the bottom of the anchor hole and that some epoxy has flowed from the cross cut opening in the anchor seal plug. REMOVABLE ANCHORS Many temporary anchoring applications that require high load capacities, also require a removable anchor. Adhesive systems often provide the highest load capacity, but have not been easily removable. Powers has developed a method that has several advantages over those offered by competitive systems. Typically, a removable installation requires the use of a steel insert sleeve. A large hole size is required to accommodate the sleeve. The sleeve is expensive, and it must be left in the concrete which can cause corrosion problems. These problems are easily eliminated when using Power-Fast, by either installing Powers Chem-Bolts or wrapping Teflon pipe tape around the bond area of the threaded anchor rod or bolt prior to inserting it in the anchor hole filled with epoxy. The Chem-Bolt, Threaded Rod or Bolt can easily be removed after the Power-Fast Epoxy has set, by rotating counterclockwise leaving threads formed from epoxy completely intact in the anchor hole. The Chem-Bolt, bolt or rod can later be re-threaded back into the anchor hole and still achieve the allowable working load. PICK PROOF APPLICATIONS Power-Fast is commonly used for pick proof applications in prison and security projects. The approximate number of linear feet that can be dispensed from each cartridge size is listed below: CARTRIDGE SIZE BEAD SIZE LINEAR FEET 10 Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" Fluid Ounce Cartridge 1" 115 The actual amount of material will vary depending upon job site installation procedures and waste. Power-Fast Epoxy is a rigid material when cured and does not flex with normal building movement. APPLICATIONS IN UNREINFORCED MASONRY WALLS An earthquake can have a devastating effect on unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings. Floor and roof decks which are not properly anchored can collapse resulting in injury or death. To reduce this risk, Division 88 of the Los Angeles City Building Code requires unreinforced masonry buildings built before 1934 to be upgraded to better withstand seismic loading. The upgrades include the installation of anchors to ensure that floor and roof decks are properly attached to the load bearing masonry walls. Standard anchoring methods specified in the ordinance include the use of threaded rod or bolts extended through the wall to an outer bearing plate to resist shear and tension. This type of anchor is commonly referred to as a combination anchor. To resist shear only, threaded rod or bolts installed 8" deep were specified. In both cases, the diameter of the drilled hole is 2-1/2" to allow installation of the grout. Impact type tools, such as rotary hammer drills, cannot be used to drill the anchor holes because the hammering action may damage the masonry walls. These methods can be very time consuming because of the large hole diameter required and the hand mixing / insertion of the grout materials. Powers offers three types of anchor assemblies which are approved alternatives to the methods listed in the Code. The assemblies are designed for use with the Power-Fast System, a material having one of the highest bond strengths on the market. Each anchor assembly is installed in a 7" or 1" diameter hole which reduces drilling time. The hole size used depends upon the code jurisdiction; either COLA or ICBO. Since the masonry walls are generally low strength, drilling is done in the "rotation only" mode to prevent damage to the wall. Once the anchor holes are drilled, the epoxy is then injected into Power- Fast stainless steel screen tubes which are then inserted into the drilled holes. As the anchor rods or sleeves are inserted into the tubes, the epoxy bonds to the solid areas and forms a key lock in any hollow portions. Two different combination style anchors are used to resist shear and tension. The first style is a 5" through bolt combination anchor which is used in conjunction with an 8" steel sleeve, a bearing plate, and a screen tube. The bearing plate (supplied by the contractor) enables the anchor to resist tension by spreading the force applied to the 5" rod over the wall, similar to a toggle. Resistance to applied shear loads is achieved by the action of the 5" threaded rod bearing against the steel sleeve which is held into the wall by the Power-Fast Epoxy. The screen tube and steel insert sleeve supplied for this application is called a Combo Kit. For various combinations of wall/fixture thickness, the 5" threaded rods are supplied in a variety of lengths.
