4 Information on this manual The instructions in this manual must be read, understood and complied with to ensure correct and safe erection and operation of the fixed ladders. Failure to comply with these instructions may lead to fatal accidents, injury or damage to property. 6 Self-closing by means of spring force lock LF Load case LFS Load case set General safety regulations 1 Intended use The fixed ladder is intended solely for the following applications: Fixed installation on buildings, machinery, silos etc. as a means of access to the respective units Assembly and use in accordance with the applicable standards DIN (for Austria: ÖN Z 1600), DIN or EN ISO Part 4 Use of all accessory parts in accordance with this manual 2 Improper use Hazards may arise as a result of improper use. In particular, improper use includes the following: Unauthorised structural modifications or incorrectly executed repairs Combination with components from other manufacturers in ladder and platform systems Use of single parts or the overall system for purposes for which they were not intended Use of parts other than those supplied or approved by Zarges 3 Safety equipment The following safety equipment (fall protection devices) is approved for use: Fall arrester system Back guard Manipulation of the safety equipment is prohibited. If defects are ascertained, the fixed ladder system must not be used. Observe the relevant standards, depending on the designated use of the fixed ladder system. 1 Fixed ladders for construction work (DIN , for Austria: ÖN Z 1600) A fall protection device in the form of a back guard or a fall arrester system in accordance with EN is mandatory from a fall height of 5 metres onwards. If the fixed ladder is of multi-section design, the maximum permissible length of each ladder section is 10 metres. 6

7 2 Emergency-ladder systems (DIN ) A fall protection device is mandatory from a fall height of 5 metres onwards. Fall arrester systems in accordance with EN must not be used. Only a fall protection device in the form of a back guard is permissible. If the fixed ladder is of multi-section design, the maximum permissible length of each ladder section is 10 metres. The top exit must be designed with an angled stile. 3 Permanent means of access to machinery; fixed ladders (EN ISO Part 4) A fall protection device in the form of a back guard or fall arrester system in accordance with EN is mandatory from a fall height of 3 metres. If the fixed ladder system is of multi-section design, the maximum permissible length of each ladder section is 6 metres. In addition, the top exit must be equipped with an exit step and a double safety barrier. 4 Operating instructions and training The operator is under obligation to compile operating instructions for the use of the fixed ladder system. These instructions must contain all necessary information for safe use of the equipment. to instruct personnel using the equipment at least once per year, on the basis of the operating instructions. to inform personnel using the equipment that the emergency-ladder systems may only be used in the event of fire and for maintenance. 5 Personnel 5.1 Use The operator must ensure that fixed ladders are only used by personnel familiar with the fixed ladder system. Personnel must be in appropriate physical condition to use the fixed ladder system. Persons under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication reducing reaction times must not be allowed to work on or with the fixed ladder. Technical description 5.2 Assembly The fixed ladder must be assembled by specialist personnel. Specialist personnel are authorised by the operator. Such personnel are persons whose professional training, specialist know-how and knowledge of the relevant regulations place them in a position to carry out the tasks assigned to them and identify and avoid possible risks. 1 Fixed ladder system The fixed ladder system is designed according to the modular principle. Any desired access height can be reached by combining matched elements. The following materials are available: natural aluminium, anodised aluminium, hot-dip galvanised, stainless. 7

8 2 Type testing The fixed ladder systems described below are type-tested and registered. The fixed ladders and platforms meet the requirements of DIN (for Austria: ÖN Z 1600), DIN and EN ISO Scope of delivery The scope of delivery is customer-specific and depends on the individual order. Before starting assembly of the product, check that all components listed in the order confirmation and on the delivery note have been supplied and are in perfect condition. Use only original parts in perfect condition to assemble the product. 4 Identification Type plates > For identification of the specific model supplied, see the type plate. Type plates are attached to all main components of the fixed ladder system. The illustration shows the type plate of a fixed ladder, 96 m, hot-dip galvanised. If the wall brackets are mounted with screw anchor systems, use only buildingauthority approved screw anchor systems. The company carrying out installation is responsible for the work and must examine the masonry thoroughly. In the event of uncertainty, contact an expert for the planning of structural framework or a specialist consultant from the company which manufactures the screw anchors (mandatory in accordance with DIN ). The attachment of the individual wall bracket must be capable of withstanding a total extraction force of 3 kn and, in combination with a fall arrester system (e. g. the Zarges ZAST fall arrester system), an impact force of 6 kn. Screw anchors are not included in the scope of delivery. Where it is necessary to cut components to size, this work must be performed by specialist personnel on-site. > Deburr all edges. > Restore anti-corrosion protection. Screws and nuts: > Use screws and nuts from ZARGES or screws and nuts of equivalent quality. > Secure screwed connections with self-locking nuts. > To ensure easy and safe assembly, use a suitable high-performance anti-wear agent designed for heavy-duty use on stainless screws in the assembly area. ZARGES recommends the product Chaast, manufactured by the Hebro company. > Tighten screws to the following torques: Dimension Tightening torque (Nm) M M M Recommendations for assembly 4.1 Preparation For a better overview, spread the fixed ladder components out on the ground and pre-assemble them segment by segment. 14

15 4.2 Order of assembly As the setup will vary according to specific on-site conditions, there is no prescribed order of assembly. Recommendation: Carry out assembly starting at the top and working towards the bottom. Observe the prescribed dimensions and spacings. The top rung must be flush with the edge of the building or machine. The topmost wall bracket should ideally be attached in the area of the top two rungs. If otherwise not possible, at least between the second and third rung. Each ladder section must be attached with two wall brackets or four single wall brackets. The wall brackets must not be more than 0 metres apart. The topmost back hoop is attached to the stile extension or the guardrail of the bridging. Wall brackets can be pre-assembled on the supporting structure, following the planned route of the ladder system. It is essential to ensure flush alignment. The platform mounting plates can be pre-assembled for each platform. They must be assembled flush (both horizontally and vertically). Following pre-assembly on the floor, ladder systems (even if they comprise several ladder segments) can be lifted using lifting tackle of suitable load-bearing capacity. To prevent damage to the ladder connectors and the overall structure during lifting, stabilise the ladder system, for example using tensioning straps spanning at least 2 to 3 rungs in the area of the ladder connections. If necessary, reinforce, for example with wood. Where necessary, shorten the lower section of the ladder and the ladder safety cage to suit on-site conditions. Restore anti-corrosion protection. 4.3 Special notes The assembly instructions are in the form of diagrams. For assembly instructions, see the illustrations section, A1 to A30 The following must also be observed: > Safety instructions in Chapter 4.1 Safety instructions. > The notes below on the individual assembly steps. A3-A4 Double-sided wall brackets (U-shaped bar), single-sided wall brackets > Check that the surface of the substructure is flat and perpendicular; use adjustable wall brackets if necessary. > Mount each ladder segment with at least two double-sided U-shaped bars or four single-sided wall brackets. If the wall brackets are mounted with screw anchor systems, use only buildingauthority approved screw anchor systems. For version with security door: > Do not attach wall brackets in the area of the hinge attachments. For version with emergency exit ladder: > Countersink drilled hole for attachment of the fixed ladder. > Use countersunk head screws. > Restore anti-corrosion protection in the area of the countersink. A5 A8 Ground plate Two ground plates can be used instead of the bottom wall bracket. Landing rail (with floor bracket) > Use only in combination with stile extension (43243/44243). Landing rail, angled > Mandatory within the area of application of DIN A10 A11 A12 A13 A15 A16 A17-A18 A20 Landing with crossover The crossovers are designed for a maximum moving working load of 150 kg. They are not designed as collection or storage points for increased working loads or stationary loads. The exit ladder must be attached to the building using wall brackets or ground plates. Installation with ground plates is described in the illustrations section. Where lateral securing (guardrail) is required (e. g. in accordance with EN ISO Part 4), this must be installed on-site. Exit step Within the area of application of EN ISO Part 4, the clearance between step and machine must not exceed 75 mm. > Where necessary, adjust the clearance on-site. Back guard A back guard segment consists of two hoops and five straps. Two back guard segments consist of three hoops and ten straps. Safety barrier The safety barriers can be installed with the following products: stile extension, straight (43243/44243), stile extension, angled (43049/44049), landing with crossover (41181/42181/43181/44181) Rest platform > Attach the opening cord to the fixed ladder in such a way that safe exit is ensured. > If the rest platform is used as an end platform: secure the rest platform with a screw to prevent unauthorised opening. 16

17 A21 A19 A24 A26-A27 A28 Emergency exit ladder > Recommendation: At least two persons are required to assemble the emergency exit ladder. In the area of the descending ladder: > The end of the ladder system must not be located above entrances or exits to the building. > The end of the descending ladder must be located on a level surface of sufficient load-bearing capacity. > Take appropriate protective measures, e. g. set up a keep-out area below the ladder system. Perform the following function test to check that the emergency exit ladder is extended without obstructions: > Guide the emergency exit ladder down with a rope. The ladder must extend without obstruction. > Pull the emergency exit ladder up and fix it in position. Security door for maintenance and escape ladders > Recommendation: At least two persons are required to assemble the security door. > After opening, secure the security door against closing unintentionally. Exit and extension platform Observe the following point in the case of platform systems comprising an exit platform and several extension platforms: > The exit platform must always be at the end of the platform configuration. Spacer segment To improve the heat conductivity of the spacer segment, the cavity can be filled with PU foam or similar material. 4.4 Final steps After assembling the product, check the following: > Have all parts included in the scope of delivery been fitted? > Are the wall anchors flush, and is the clearance between fixed ladder and wall 200 mm at all points? Exception: irregularly placed obstacles. The minimum clearance in this case is 150 mm. > Are all screwed connections tightened to the correct torque? > Are all surfaces undamaged? Restore the anti-corrosion protection if surfaces are damaged. > Are the rest platforms fully functional? > Are the doors and rotating platforms functional and is their pivoting range unobstructed? > Are appropriate protective measures in place in the area of the descending emergency exit ladder? 5. Use 5.1 Safety instructions Only use the fixed ladder system if it is in technically perfect condition. Make sure that no unauthorised persons have access to the fixed ladder system. Do not use the fixed ladder system to perform maintenance work if weather conditions are such that safe access is not possible. 17

18 Ensure free access to the fixed ladder system. Do not subject the fixed ladder system to alternating loads, for example by rocking or jumping on it. Close devices such as rotating platforms, rest platforms, security doors and safety barriers properly after use. 5.2 Special notes Landing rail > When exiting the ladder system, keep both hands on the guardrail until you have reached a safe standing position. Access aid, retractable Using the access aid from above: > Grip the handle and pull out the access aid until the locking bolt on the end of the tube can be engaged in the recess in the guide. To do this, turn the handle slightly to the side and press the access aid downwards. > Check that the access aid is locked in position before entering the fixed ladder system. The use of an access aid which is not locked in position is prohibited. > After entering the fixed ladder system, lift the access aid, turn it sideways and lower it completely. Using the access aid from below: > From a safe standing place, push the access aid upwards until the locking bolt on the end of the tube can be engaged in the recess in the guide. To do this, turn the handle slightly to the side and pull the access aid downwards. > Before exiting the fixed ladder system, check that the access aid is locked in position. The use of an access aid which is not locked in position is prohibited. > After exiting the fixed ladder system, lift the access aid, turn it sideways and lower it completely. Safety barrier > Article No : to enter/exit, swing the barrier inwards towards the building, with a slight forward and upward movement. > Article No : to enter/exit, swing the barrier forwards, towards the building and against the spring force. > Article No : to enter/exit, swing the barrier forwards, towards the building and against the spring force. Rest platform Using the rest platform from above: > From a safe standing place, raise the platform with the opening cord. > Climb down through the frame of the platform. > Close the platform by hand from a safe standing position. Using the rest platform from below: > Open the platform fully by hand from a safe standing position. > Climb up through the frame of the platform. > From a safe standing position, close the platform with the opening cord. > Attach the opening cord to the fixed ladder in such a way that safe exit is ensured. 18

19 Base ladder > Hook the ladder onto the rungs of the fixed ladder with all four parking hooks. > Check that all four parking hooks are lying flush. > Make sure that the base ladder does not sway when you step onto it. > Use the cable lock provided to secure the base ladder, thus preventing access to the fixed ladder system and unauthorised removal of the base ladder. Emergency exit ladder WARNING THERE IS A RISK OF SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY WHEN THE EMERGENCY EXIT LADDER IS BEING LOWERED > Before lowering the emergency exit ladder, make sure that the area of the descending ladder is free of persons and objects. > From a safe standing position on the fixed ladder, press the red trip rod down with your foot. > Do not climb onto the emergency exit ladder until it is safely in position on the exit point. Security door for escape and maintenance ladders > After opening, secure the security door against closing unintentionally. > Security door for maintenance ladders (Article No ): after passing through the security door, secure it against unauthorised use with a lock fitted on site. Security door with fixed side parts WARNING DANGER OF INJURY CAUSED BY OBSTACLES IN THE PIVOTING RANGE > Make sure that there are no persons or objects in the pivoting range of the security door. > Open the access protection from the inside with the handbolt. > After exiting, close the security door. Platforms (general) > Do not climb from the platform onto the fixed ladder until you have a secure hold on the fixed ladder with both hands. > Do not climb from the fixed ladder onto the platform until you are level with the platform. Swing-out access protection WARNING RISK OF INJURY WHEN THE ROTATING PLATFORM PIVOTS OUT > Before triggering the rotating platform, make sure that there are no persons or objects in the pivoting range of or beneath the rotating platform. > To trigger the rotating platform, release the locking mechanism from a safe standing position on the fixed ladder. The rotating platform swings open automatically. > After opening, secure the rotating platform against closing unintentionally. 19

20 6. Inspection and servicing 6.1 Inspection Have the fixed ladders inspected for operational safety by a technical expert at intervals appropriate for the operating conditions. Inspection must be carried out at least once a year. The technical expert is authorised to carry out inspection by the operator and must have taken part in the seminars prescribed by law in the country concerned. Document performance of the inspection, the findings of the inspection and any measures implemented as a result of the inspection. ZARGES recommends that you keep an inspection log comprising fixed ladder check sheets, in which all data concerning the fixed ladder system are entered. Fixed ladder check sheets are available on the ZARGES home page. After successful inspection of the product, the ZARGES inspection plate (Order No ) must be attached to the product. The month and year in which the next inspection is due must be clearly legible. 6.2 Care Movable components such as the hinges of the rest platform, safety barriers, the triggering device for the emergency exit ladder and the hinges of the security door must be checked for ease of movement at least once per year. Remove soiling on the fixed ladder system, in particular oil, immediately. If the fixed ladder system is soiled, clean it with gentle cleaning agents. Do not use acids or alkaline substances! Apply suitable anti-corrosion protection to seal any damage to surfaces. Remove any parts of plants that protrude into the fixed ladder system. 6.3 Repairs Effecting repairs of any kind to the equipment is prohibited. Any damaged parts must be replaced. 6.4 Spare parts Use only original spare parts manufactured by ZARGES. 20
