8 CORRECT USE OF THE SAFEMASTER HEIGHT SAFETY SYSTEM AND EQUIPMENT Anchor Points New Ladders LEGEND There are two possible situations when working on roofs, namely: a) PITCHED ROOFS If the possibility of rolling or sliding off the roof as a result of a fall is probable, the user needs to be anchored at all times anywhere on the roof. b) FLAT ROOFS There is no possibility of the user rolling or sliding off the roof as a result of a fall once positioned inside the 'safe zone' area of the roof. Only if the user is to proceed outside the 'safe zone' i.e. within 2.0 mtrs from an edge must be connected to an anchorage point. Prior to starting any work, the following work method must be read and implemented. Ladder Access Bracket. Equipment must be inspected by the operator in accordance with the manufacturers instructions included in this manual. Operators should familiarise themselves with all equipment prior to commencement. Ensure safety system has been formally inspected within the last 12 months. Roof anchor point. Direction of roof fall. Risk assessment should be undertaken prior to commencement of work, with measures put into place to eliminated or reduce any potential hazards such as; wet/slippery roofs, electrified gables, fragile roof areas etc. Appropriate barricades and signage must be erected for the works being undertaken, to restrict unautherised access to the areas. Sign A/C Safety Sign. A/C unit. Ensure only competent persons are allowed to access the safety and roof area. 1. Consult the roof safety system layout plan and plot your route accordingly. Care must be taken to follow the route guides indicated on the system layout plan. Do not attempt to bypass consecutive anchor points. 2. Fit and adjust body harness as required. VP Vent pipe. Exhaust fan. Fixed ladder. 3. Locate the access points to the roof area. a) portable ladder access - If a portable ladder is to be used, the ladder must be attached to the ladder support bracket and should extend approximately 1.0m above the roof edge. b) Internal access hatch - This method of access usually allows entry onto the roof well away from an extreme edge. On a pitched roof, the roof anchor point will be in reaching distance from the hatch to allow immediate attachment of rope line. On a flat roof no anchorage point is required unless within 2.0mtrs from an edge. Q R S T U Hatched area "No Access" Access from ground only. Aluminium or Gal. steel walkway. Existing or new install. c) External fixed ladder with life line - If the system comprises of a fixed ladder system incorporating a vertical life line system the following directions must be followed; - Traveler unit to be mounted onto vertical line and via dedicated shock absorber with karabiner clip onto front loop attachment of harness. - To ascend, climb up the ladder normally. Avoid carrying tools or equipment that do not allow both hands to be free for climbing. The traveler unit will follow the climber. Plan Scale 1:200 Handrail picture only diagrammatic - Once the top is reached, it is imperative not to disconnect from the vertical line unit a safe transition has been made either onto the roof anchorage points within reach of the ladder or once safely behind the roof entry gate. - To descend, do not detached from the roof anchorage points until you have attached onto the vertical line systems. Should the traveler lock whist descending, move upward slightly to release and continue down the ladder. 4. Attach rope line to first Safety Anchor anchorage point. With the rope line attached to the harness via the rope line adjuster, attach the snaphook onto the first anchor point. NB: The operator must not step onto the roof until this connection has been made and checked and any slack rope is taken back through the adjuster. 12 The operator may now step onto the roof. 5. Progress across the roof. The operator is to walk carefully to the next anchor point, as indicated on the system layout plan, deploying the rope line through the adjuster as necessary. Once the anchor point is reached, a karabiner clip is positioned through the eye of the anchor point and the rope line positioned through the karabiner clip and its gate is locked. 13 At all times, slack rope from the anchor point to the operator should be kept to a minimum. 14 Continue this process connecting the rope line onto each consecutive anchor point via karabiner until desired location is reached. When work is to be done on extreme edges, allow only enough rope line to get you within a safe distance from the closest edge. (including slack on your shock absorbing lanyard). Too much rope line allowed will result in unacceptable pendulum, should the operator fall at this point Correct Rope Length Incorrect Rope Length 17 Progressing back towards the roof access point is the reverse of this procedure, ensuring that the adjuster is used to keep the rope line taut. Fixed ladder picture only diagrammatic GENERAL POINTS TO FOLLOW: - Avoid working alone on a roof two persons can be connected per anchor point. - Tools should be lanyarded (secured) to prevent them slipping or falling off the roof if this is a possibility On 'flat' roofs, the rope lanyard assembly is usually attached to the rear metal attachment on the harness.
