1 Daniel Webster Council Historic District Spring Camporee May 2-4, 2014 At Peterson Farm 154 Martin Road Fremont, NH Pioneering Theme & Games! The 2014 Spring Camporee will be a combination of a Pioneering Theme and Games! Each participating Scout will have an opportunity to earn part of the Pioneering Merit Badge, have fun playing games, improve their dessert cooking skills and enjoy Camporee Basics. During the camporee, Scouts will be able to satisfy the following requirements for the Pioneering Merit Badge: 2B. Tie the following: square knot, bowline, sheepshank, sheet bend, and roundturn, with two half hitches. 3. Explain why it is useful to be able to throw a rope, and then demonstrate how to coil and throw a 40-foot length of ¼ or 3/8 rope. Explain how to improve your throwing distance by adding weight to the end of your rope. 4. Explain the differences between synthetic ropes and naturalfiber ropes. Discuss which types of ropes are suitable for pioneering work and why. Include the following in your discussion: breaking strength, safe working loads, and the care and storage of rope. 6. Using a rope-making device or machine, make a rope at least 6 feet long consisting of 3 strands, each having three yarns. 9. By yourself, build an A-trestle OR X-trestle using square and diagonal lashings. Explain the application of the trestle you build. Demonstrate how to tie two spars together using a shear lashing. 10. With a group of Scouts, or on your own, select a pioneering project. With your counselor s guidance, create a rough sketch of the project. 3 Activity & Station Explanations Troop Gateway: This is a Scout Skill and Tradition that has been missing in the Historic District for several years. A Troop Gateway is a Pioneering Project (satisfies requirement 10 above) that involves designing and building a Gateway or Entrance to your campsite. For some great ideas for Gateways follow this link: We will have a contest to determine the 3 best Gateways. Winners will be judged on creativity, use of proper knots & lashings, magnitude of the project, and use of the Troop name & number on the Gateway. Camp Tools & Gadgets: This is another skill and activity that hasn t been promoted in our district for awhile. Camp Tools & Gadgets are smaller pioneering projects where Scouts build or lash useful tools & gadgets for their campsites such as fire pail stands, trash bag tri-pods, clothesline, etc. We will also have a contest for the three best campsites with Tools and Gadgets created by the Scouts. Judging will be based on number of tools & gadgets, creativity, use of proper lashings, safety, and actual use of the tool & gadget. Knot & Lashing Game: Objective: Scouts will demonstrate tying basic knots and lashes used in the Pioneering Merit Badge. Procedure: Each member of the patrol is given the opportunity to demonstrate the following knots: square knot, bowline, sheepshank, sheet bend, and roundturn with two half-hitches. (Satisfies requirement 2B). Rules: Each knot and lash must be shown to the judge. Each knot and lash must be done properly. Members of the group may teach one another to tie the lash. The event will be timed and recorded as an average based on the number of members in the patrol. Scoring: Each patrol may have up to twenty minutes to complete the event. The group will be scored on the number of tasks completed. For each of the five knots, 5 points are awarded if each group member can tie it, 3 points if some can tie it and 1 point if no one can tie it. The top three patrols with the most points and fastest times will be the winners. Rope Discussion and Rescue Rope Contest: Each Scout will participate in a discussion about the differences between synthetic ropes and natural fiber ropes. This will satisfy requirement 4. They will then discuss why it is useful to be able to throw a rope then demonstrate how to coil and throw it which will satisfy requirement 3. Rescue Rope Contest Objective: Each member of the group throws a rope to a victim and coils it as quickly as possible. Procedure: Select a victim and place him 20 feet from the throwing line. One at a time, each member of the group throws the rope accurately to the victim, coils the rope as fast as they can, and hands it to the next person. Rules: Each person throws and coils once. Scoring: The event will be timed with the fastest three times declared the winners. Subtract 5 seconds for each throw within reach of the victim. Calculate the average time.

4 Rope Making Station: This station will satisfy requirement 6; Using a rope-making device or machine, make a rope at least 6 feet long consisting of 3 strands, each having three yarns. Stick It to Em Game (satisfies part of requirement 9): Objective: Scouts are to assemble and disassemble a shear-lashed pole. Procedure: Divide the patrol in half and place the two groups on opposite sides of a 20-foot space. On each side, the groups will find three 7-foot lashing spars and two lengths of lashing rope. On a signal from the judge, each group lashes the spars into a pole, and then passes it across the 20-foot space to the other group. Each group must disassemble the pole it receives. Rules: If the pole touches the ground between the two spaces, the pole has to be brought all the way back and be re-passed. Care should be taken to prevent injury. Scoring: The fastest three times win. Rescue Rope II Game: Objective: The group rescues an endangered victim. Procedure: Each member of the patrol is given a 5 or 6 length of rope. Then the victim is placed 30 from the group. On a signal, the patrol must tie the ropes end to end, using square knots. When the rope is completed, the group must coil the rope and throw it from the imaginary shoreline to the victim. The victim must catch the rope and tie a bowline around his waist. If the victim can t reach the rope, the group must recoil and throw the rope until the victim catches it. Rules: Each knot must be done properly. The group must not drag the victim. The group must stay behind the line. The victim must stay in one spot. Scoring: Record the time of the event and add 15 seconds for each incorrect knot. The three fastest times win. Build an H-Trestle (satisfies part of requirement 9): By yourself, build an A-trestle OR X-trestle using square and diagonal lashings. Explain the application of the trestle you build. See the merit badge book for instruction. Rapid Transit Game: Objective: Scouts demonstrate the skills required for transporting people in an emergency situation. Procedure: Pair off the group. Line pairs along one end of the field. The members of each pair will be transporting one another from one side of the area to the other, using first aid transport techniques. For the first trip across, they demonstrate the walking assist. The second trip is done using the single-person carry. The Scouts then divide into groups of three and demonstrates two-person carries for the third trip. Next, the entire group transports one victim using a group carry. For the last trip, the group must carry a different victim on a stretcher made from scavenged material. This is all to be done as quickly as possible. Rules: Care must be used in all carries. If someone is dropped, that group must do that trip over. The group may talk about the technique to be used. Scoring: Time the event form the signal to begin until everyone has done the entire schedule of carries satisfactorily and then average the time per Scout.

5 Tent Pitching Contest: Objective: Scouts demonstrate the ability to set their tent up quickly as if experiencing inclement weather. Procedure: Each patrol starts with one of their regular troop two man tents of average size. The tent will be in its storage bag on the ground. At the signal, the patrol will work together to set the tent up as quickly as they can. Each member of the Patrol will then climb inside the tent and then they must completely zipper the door closed. Once closed, they can exit the tent. They next must completely disassemble their tent and properly stow it back in its storage bag. Scoring: Fastest three times win. Sharks & Minnows: Time allowing we will break into groups and play Sharks & Minnows. Golden Skillet Competition: The Golden Skillet Competition Theme is Cast Iron Desert. Bring your best cast iron desert and be original. Think beyond the peach cobbler and monkey bread. The dessert must be completely prepared at the Camporee site and can include canned ingredients. Each patrol entry must provide a typed recipe for the dessert with the Troop Name & Number, Patrol Name, complete recipe for preparing the dessert and a list of the ingredients. Entries will be judged on flavor, served hot (if applicable), creativity, degree of difficulty, and presentation. Closing Campfire: Any Troop or Patrol that would like to present a skit at the closing campfire should submit their skit idea to the campfire coordinator in advance. Summary of Contests There will be a first, second, and third place ribbon for each event.
