1 Firefighting (FF) Public Safety Skilled and Technical Sciences Contests Contest Information State Qualifying Exam: Yes National Contest: Yes Participation: Individual Update April 2, 2018 Contest Description This competition evaluates students preparation for firefighting careers through hands-on skill demonstrations and both written and oral presentations. Areas tested include: safety; breathing apparatus; fire streams; ladders, ropes, knots and hoses; fire control; ventilation; emergency medical care and rescue; and protecting fire cause evidence. 4 Knots (0 pts) For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a figure-eight bend. A figure-eight knot is stronger than a bowline, easy to tie and untie, inspect, and keep neat. There are several variations of the figure-eight knot commonly used in the fire service. 1 Tie a figure-eight knot on one end of the rope. 2 Feed the end of the other rope through the figure-eight knot in reverse. It should follow the exact path of the original knot. 3 Use a safety knot, such as the overhand, with this knot 4 Dressing 5 Time under 60 Seconds Total 50 For this skills evaluation checklist, students will tie a figure-eight on a bight. The figure-eight on a bight is a good way to tie a loop in either the middle or the end of a rope. It is tied by forming a bight in either the end of the rope or at any point along its length, and then tying a simple figure-eight with the doubled part of the rope (bight). Because it can be tied in the middle of the rope or used for a loop in the rope to which other lines or equipment can be attached, it is used for both an anchoring attachment and a harness tie-in. 1 Form a bight in the working end of the rope. 5 2 Pass it over the standing part to form a loop. 5 3 Pass the bight under the standing part and then over the loop and down through 5 it; this forms the figure-eight. 4 Extend the bight through the knot to whatever size working loop is needed. 5 5 Dress the knot. 6 Secure with an overhand safety. 7 Time under 90 seconds Total 50 Knots Total: /0

5 Hoisting (0 pts) Hoist an pick-head axe. 1 Request an appropriate length of rope from the intended destination of the axe. 5 2 Tie a clove hitch. 5 NOTE: If the rope has a loop in the end, the loop may be used instead of a clove hitch. 3 Slide the clove hitch down the axe handle to the axe head. The excess running end of the rope becomes the guideline. 4 Loop the working end of the rope around the head of the axe and back up the handle. 5 Tie a half-hitch on the handle a few inches (millimeters) above the clove hitch. 6 Tie another half-hitch at the butt end of the handle. 5 7 Hoist the axe in under 90 seconds 5 Total 50 For this skills evaluation checklist, students will hoist a dry hoseline. Hoisting hose is probably the safest way to get hoselines to upper levels. As with advancing hose up a ladder, it is easier and safer to hoist a dry hoseline. Hoist a dry 2 ½ hoseline with play-pipe. 1 Request an appropriate length of rope from the intended destination of the hoseline. 2 Fold the nozzle end of the hoseline back over the rest of the hose so that an overlap of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 m to 1.5 m) is formed. 3 Tie a clove hitch, with an overhand safety knot, around the tip of the nozzle and the hose it is folded against so that they are lashed together. 4 Place a half-hitch on the doubled hose about 12 inches (300 mm) from the loop end. NOTE: With the ties properly placed, the hose will turn on the hose roller so that the coupling and nozzle will be on top as the hose passes over the roller. 5 Hoist hoseline in under 120 Seconds Total 50 Hoisting Total: /0

6 Minuteman Load (150 pts) Connect the first section of hose to the discharge outlet. Do not connect it to the other lengths of hose Lay the hose flat in the bed to the front. Lay the remaining hose out the front of the bed to be loaded later. If the discharge outlet is at the front of the bed, lay the hose to the rear of the bed and then back to the front before it is set aside. This provides slack hose for pulling the load clear of the bed. 20 Couple the remaining hose sections together. Attach a nozzle to the male end. Place the nozzle on top of the first length at the rear. Angle the hose to the opposite side of the bed and make a fold. Lay the hose back to the rear. Make a fold at the rear of the bed. Angle the hose back to the other side and make a fold at the front. NOTE: The first fold or two may be longer than the others to facilitate the pulling of the hose from the bed. Continue loading the hose to alternating sides of the bed in the same manner until the complete length is loaded. Connect the male coupling of the first section to the female coupling of the last section Lay the remainder of the first section in the bed in the same manner. Timing: Under 5 Minutes Total 150

7 Making the Hydrant Connection (150 pts) For this skills evaluation students will operate a hydrant. When operating a hydrant, remind students to follow the basic safety precautions given below. Remove necessary equipment from the pumper. a. Hydrant or spanner wrench b. 2 ½ Gate Valve c. Rubber mallet (if needed) d. Large Diameter Hose As a safety precaution, tighten hydrant outlet caps that will not be used. a. Turn caps clockwise b. Use appropriate tools Turn outlet nut counterclockwise and remove the Steamer cap from one outlet and place behind the hydrant. Inspect the hydrant for exterior damage and check for debris or damage in inside outlet. Open the hydrant. a. Use tools to slowly turn hydrant nut appropriate direction, typically counterclockwise. b. Continue until water flowing to flush hydrant (approx. 6 turns) c. Stand clear of closed caps d. Do not lean over top of hydrant Close the hydrant. Use tools to slowly turn hydrant nut appropriate direction, typically clockwise continue until fully closed (approx. 6 turns). Connect 2 ½ gate valve to 2 ½ port on hydrant turning clockwise and making hand tight. Insure valve in closed position. Stretch the Large Diameter Hose to the hydrant, placing two full twists in the hose to prevent kinking. Make the hydrant connection to steamer outlet or outlet with adapter, turning clockwise and making hand tight. Check with Engineer for ok to send water Fully open hydrant 15 turns. Tighten any leaking connections using rubber mallet or spanner wrench. Time: Total Score 150

8 Donning of PPE along with SCBA (150 pts) Correctly Check SCBA (ie. harness assembly/hoses/pressure/low-air alarm/remote gauge/ bypass). Given a reasonable amount of time, correctly setup gear and inspect SCBA. Don nomex hood, Don Boots and Bunker Pants Puts on nomex hood, steps into boots, pull up by pants not suspenders, places suspenders over shoulder, all fasteners secured, contestant does not slip or fall over while donning gear. Don Bunker Coat Puts coat on in a fluid motion, secures inner closure, secures outer closure, turns up collar and secures neck flap. Don SCBA (Coat or Over the Head Method) Checks air level and shouts out air pressure, turns on bottle, dons SCBA per method chosen, secures all straps and buckles, activates pass device. Don Face Piece Pulls mask over head, secures straps (chin, temple, top), checks for seal, checks exhaust valve operation, pulls up nomex hood to fit around face piece lens. Don Helmet and Gloves Adjusts helmet prior to donning, puts on helmet making sure earflaps are on the outside, secures chin strap and adjusts, puts Firefighting gloves on proper hands, performs in a fluid motion. Regulator to Mask Connection Hooks up without a production, takes breath to activating air or turns on regulator, checks bypass valve for operation. Claps hands to indicate done. Time / Deductions seconds or less (1point deduction for every 5 sec. over) Deficiencies shall receive safety deductions of ½ Pt per Infraction for: Fasteners/Buckles/Straps/Zippers/Velcro/Snaps Not Secured, Slips or Falls Over while Donning, Collar Inside Coat, does not turn on air before Breathing, Does not Check Seal of Mask, Earflaps not over Coat Collar, Unsecured Chin Strap, Gloves on Wrong Hands, Any Exposed Skin, Helmet Shield remaining up Time: Total Score 150

9 Firefighter Physical Ability Section ON AIR IN FULL GEAR (325 pts) Each contestant will be judged on his or her ability to complete the Firefighter Physical Ability Section in a safe and timely manner. Each contestant will complete each area to the best of their ability. At no time shall a candidate run on the course. Running is defined as both feet leaving the ground at the same time; a brisk walk, however, is encouraged. Indicator Max Points Score Flake Carry (Up): Place the 0 1 ¾ hose load on either shoulder and carries it to the top of the stairs without dropping. Contestant must touch every step going up and set down hose load on ground at top of stairs (No Running Accepted). Hose Hoist: Hoist a roll of 1 ¾ off the ground and over the top rail. Flake Carry (Down): Place the given hose load on either shoulder and carries it to the base of the stairs without dropping. Contestant must touch every step going down and place hose load on ground at bottom of stairs (No Running Accepted). Forcible Entry: Contestant must pick up the sledge hammer, strike center of the prop times with strong convincing force. Hose Drag: Proceed to the dry 1 ¾. hose with nozzle and drag it 75 to pre-positioned drum make turn 90 degrees and continue for 25. Stop in marked space and pull additional 50 of hose. Ceiling Breach and Pull: Using a 6 pike pole the contestant will fully push up 60lbs. hinge door in the ceiling 3 times. Then hook the pike polo to the ceiling device and pull down 80 lbs 5 times.
