2 DECISION TREE - INDUSTRIAL PULLING CUSTOMIZING YOUR PORTABLE WINCH - INDUSTRIAL PULLING KIT The consists of 6 steps. For each step, the dealer should ask the customer questions to determine the equipment required. Overall, 8 to 10 questions are required to complete a Portable Winch kit. For rescue operations or situations where the lightness of the winch is the most important factor, the customer should consider the PCW3000. The latter is the lightest model in the Portable Winch range and has a pulling force of 700 kg at 10 m/minute. For industrial applications and heavy loads where the customer is looking for power, the PCW5000 should be considered. For pulling wires and fibre optics where the customers is looking for a a solution where pulling speed is paramount, the PCW5000-HS should be considered. Consult the table below to select the combination of winch and drum required. 4 STEP 2 SELECTION OF PULLEYS Did you know that you can increase the traction force 2, 3 or 4 times by using pulleys? Nothing can stop you if you handle them correctly! Additionally, you can change the traction angle using deviation pulleys to complete arduous tasks. It is used to change the traction angle (upwards or to the side) or to keep the rope away from the ground. For example, a guide pulley used on a steep slope allows the operator to keep the winch level. On flat ground, a small angle reduces friction in the system and premature wear of the rope. 13 STEP 3 SELECTION OF THE ROPE AND THE ROPE BAG Now that the winch and pulleys have been selected, a double-braid polyester rope must be chosen. It has low elasticity and is heat resistant which are two essential characteristics in pulling with a capstan winch. A 12 mm rope is recommended for all industrial applications because they have a minimum breaking strength of 3,300 kg. Given these indications, the rope length still needs to be determined. Note: The PCW3000 is normally used with a 10 mm rope. However, it is possible to use a 12 mm rope.? WHAT IS YOUR STRAIGHT LINE PULLING DISTANCE? For example, if you want to double the capacity over a 50 m distance, a rope at least 100 m long will be required. If you want to triple the force, you will need a minimum of 150 m. 4.40

15 DECISION TREE FOR LIFTING WINCHES Lifting winches are useful in several activity sectors including public electricity services, telecoms and construction. Typical applications include the replacement of transformers and insulators for highvoltage lines, the assembly and maintenance of towers and antennas, the maintenance of wind turbines and the lifting of construction materials. We offer three winch models equipped with a rope grabbing system allowing the operator to work safely. The PCH with a petrol engine - and the PCT with an electric motor - both have a nominal lifting capacity of 250 kg. The PCH2000 has a nominal lifting capacity of 450 kg and is only available with a thermal engine. 4.42

17 STEP 1 SELECTION OF THE WINCH For loads between kg, the PCH1000 and the PCT1800 are recommended. For loads between kg, you can use the PCH1000 (or the PCT1800) with a pulley system or the PCH2000 in a straight line. Therefore, the lifting speed and the winch s weight are decisive criteria. For loads over 450 kg, the PCH2000 must be used with a pulley system. Note: In several lifting situations, you will need an operator on the ground responsible for keeping the load away from the lifting structure using a rope. By pulling on this rope, the operator works against the winch. This must be considered when calculating the lifting load.? LOAD WHAT IS THE WEIGHT? 19 STEP 2? SELECTION OF PULLEYS For lifting, at least one pulley is required to lift a load. Additional pulleys can be used to increase power. The number of pulleys required will be determined by the winch s capacity versus the weight of the load being lifted. During any lifting operation, it is important to use components with a suitable breaking force. Additionally, many lifting operations require one or more guide pulleys to redirect the rope. Pulley s systems 2x PCA-1274 Single pulley 3x PCA kn Carabiners 2x PCA-1258 Sling of 3 m Deviation pulley Because the winch is usually set-up at the bottom of a structure during lifting operations, one or more deviation pulleys will be necessary. Unless the rope is directed upwards using the PCA-1264, one deviation pulley will be used at the base of the structure. One more pulley at the top will redirect the rope downwards. Other pulleys may be used to allow the rope to go around obstacles such as tower members or installed equipment. If yes, add: 1x PCA-1274 Single pulley 1x PCA kn Carabiner 1x PCA-1258 Sling of 3 m Specialized pulley The specialized pulleys are made of aluminum, so they are meant for clients looking for the lightest equipment possible or if they need to hold a load in place using a self-blocking pulley. Generally speaking, a pulley is attached to a sling using a carabiner. The carabiner must be selected taking into consideration the appropriate safety factor. Carabiner: The PCA-1701 is the most resistant carabiner with a minimum breaking strength of 70 kn (7,140 kg). We recommend it for all applications which require lifting. Sling: The PCA-1258 and the PCA-1260 have a straight-line working load limit (WLL) of 2,000 kg. 4.46

24 STEP 3 SELECTION OF THE ROPE AND THE ROPE BAG All Portable Winch ropes are manufactured with double-braid polyester, which gives them low elasticity and heat resistance - two essential characteristics for capstan winches! For industrial lifting applications, we recommend the use of 12 mm double braid polyester rope with a Minimum Breaking Strength of 3300 kg. In addition, ropes should be terminated with a buried eye splice fitted with a steel thimble: this will ensure that 100% of the rope strength is maintained and that the rope end hardware will not damage the rope. Knots can be used but keep in mind that they will reduce the rope capacity by 30 to 50%.? WHAT IS THE LIFTING HEIGHT? To lift, a rope which is at least twice as long as the lifting height is required. For lifting 50 m, at least 100 m of rope is required. If you double the capacity of the system using a pulley, the rope length must be three times as long i.e.150 m rope. The table below summarises the maximum reach according to rope lengths and block and tackle systems mechanical advantages. 25 STEP 4 ANCHORING SELECTION The PCA-1264 is specifically designed for lifting operations. It maintains the winch in a stable position and the integrated guide pulley acts as a deviation pulley. It works in conjunction with many accessories see below and allows the use of many types of structures and vehicles as anchor points. = PCA-1264 = + = = 4.52

26 STEP 4 ANCHORING SELECTION A note on the PCA-1332 The PCA-1332 is a new accessory which converts the winch support for vertical pulling, PCA-1264, into a pulling accessory. It pivots so that the winch is lined up with the load and it can be attached to the same accessories as the PCA When the PCA-1332 is used with the PCA-1264 for pulling, the front pivoting pulley is not used.
