1 PE Curriculum KS3 (Years 7-9) Subject Statement: (description of the purpose of the subject, along with accreditation offered) Glenwood School regards Physical Education as an essential component of a child s development. The skills learned during play, sport and physical activity contribute to the holistic development of all young people. Through continued participation, they learn important values such as, team-work, honesty, respect, fair play and how to adhere to the rules. Pupils are taught social and moral values through competition and how to win and lose. They learn about the benefits of sport and exercise on their health, general well-being and the positive effect exercise has on their learning.
2 Assessment Statement: During the first term at Glenwood, all students take part in the multi-skills module. This module encompasses fundamental skills such agility, balance, co-ordination, speed & endurance. At the end of this module, students complete a multi-skills circuit, after which a judgement can be made in relation to their current attainment as outlined in the National Curriculum. After completing their baseline assessment, students will be set targets and informed of what they are and how they can improve in order to achieve them. Progress can then be judged throughout the subsequent modules with regards to the initial baseline assessment. Assessment will take place via questions and answers, self-assessment, video analysis and the completion of a skills circuit at the end of each module. If it is felt that a child is experiencing difficulties, then small group or 1-to-1 interventions take place with individualised coaching; aimed at increasing the child s confidence, understanding and success rate. Term Autumn Term 1 Multi-skills: All safety aspects of P.E. Fundamental skills e.g., Agility, balance, coordination, speed & endurance. Activities inc. throwing & catching. Target games. Running, dodging & change of direction. Balance circuits/games. Ball striking, with various Multi-skills: All safety aspects of P.E. Ball striking, with various equipment and parts of the body. A variety of Multi-skills: More complex task/circuits. Team challenge/ Small group competitions, e.g., 10- pin bowling, table tennis, target toss, obstacle races etc.

Defence behind the ball (goal-side). Attack ready position, calling for the ball and getting in front of the ball, (space). Football: Safety aspects. Co-operation, team work & fair play. Revision of basic skills. Passing short & long, give n go (unopposed). Dribbling for speed. Shooting stationary & on the move. Different parts of the foot. Controlling the ball chest. Heading attacking & defensive. Rules same as yr 7 module. Defence goal-side look around. Attack change of direction. Football: Passing long n short, triangles & give n go. Passing give n go (static & moving defender). Dribbling step-over, hook, the cruyff etc. Shooting stationary, moving & give n go. Controlling the ball thigh. Heading with power & direction. Rules same as yr 7 module. Defence goal-side look around - jockying. Attack change of direction, deception the eyes & sway. Practices become more game orientated, e.g., 3 v 2. Spring Term 1 Body Balance & Fitness: Safe practice laying out equipment & packing it away. Benefits of relaxation & how to relax, e.g., body alignment & the correct breathing techniques. Holding an effective pose/balance (tight core, correct alignment & straight limbs). Basic poses & stretches. Use of balance disc to strengthen Body Balance & Fitness: Safe practice laying out equipment & packing it away. Passing shoulder & over-head pass. Footwork triple threat & pivoting. Shooting 1 & 2 handed with ltd. opposition. Defence goal-side look around. Attack change of direction. Practices become more game orientated, e.g., 3 v 2, give & go etc. Rules foul in the key, 3- point line. Basketball: Revise all basic individual skills, rules and safety aspects. Footwork - 1 & 2 footed jump. Passing - one handed shuttle pass hook pass - emphasis on linking moves. Shooting 2 & 1 handed the lay-up. Defence - positional play & jockeying an opponent towards the side-lines. Attack running routes. Refereeing pupils take turns to referee.
5 Summer Term 1 Athletics: Safety aspects. Running at different speeds/change of direction. Stride length, head, arm & body position, breathing, pacing & sprinting. Jumping inc., take-off and landing. Arms up for balance & height, land on toes, knees bent. Throwing an object with one hand, follow through to target. Recognising bodily changes e.g., sweating & heart-rate. Athletics: Running at speeds appropriate to distance. Jumping from a running start. Throwing an array of objects whilst demonstrating a variety of different techniques. Recognising a change of heartrate, breathing & temperature. Athletics: Whilst running, can improve and sustain running technique at different speeds. Can demonstrate accuracy & technique in a range of throwing & jumping actions. Identify & explain good athletic performance. Describe the changes to the body when running, jumping & throwing. Summer Term 2 Ball Striking Rounders & Cricket: (3 lessons of each discipline): Safety aspects. Basic skills/familiarisation Bat - grip & body orientation. Running with the bat. Striking the ball. Ball throwing & catching (short/long & h/low). Bowling underarm. Fielding basic positions inc. backstop/wicket keeper. Rules scoring, methods of being out & number of balls per over. Ball Striking Rounders & Cricket: (3 lessons of each discipline): Revision of previous skills & rules. Fielding basic positions, short/long barriers. Batting defensive stroke (cricket) bunt (rounders). Bowling over-arm. Team work calling out, stay or run. Rules - running out a team-mate. Ball Striking Rounders & Cricket: (3 lessons of each discipline): Revision of previous skills & rules. Batting shot placement. Bowling spin. Umpiring pupils take turns to umpire.

7 r Year 10 Subject Overview Year 10 will be a revision year where-by students will revise and refine their techniques in preparation for their exams in Yr 11. Assessment Statement: (how you assess baseline attainment, measure progress, and determine that progress is Good. Mention here any interventions that are subject specific and how you judge when these are needed) Assessment will take place via questions and answers, self-assessment, video analysis and the completion of a skills circuit at the end of each module. If it is felt that a child is experiencing difficulties, then small group or 1-to-1 interventions take place with individualised coaching; aimed at increasing the child s confidence, understanding and success rate. Assessment in Year 11 will take place both; internally and externally when students complete there PE examination, (currently under review).
8 Yr 11 Subject Overview All Yr 11 pupils will participate in an exam module. The current examination process is under review. More details to follow.
