1 KINGSMEAD COLLEGE JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS POLICY
2 GENERAL PARTICIPATION In the interest of good health and vitality, all Kingsmead girls are encouraged to participate in at least one sport per term Parents are encouraged to ensure that all girls are water borne and able to swim at least one length at the start of Grade 1 COACHES Kingsmead strives to provide the best available coaches for the different teams PRACTICES Team members must attend ALL scheduled practices and matches If a team member is absent/injured and can not attend a practice, a written note to excuse the team member from that practice must be handed to the coach or teacher in charge before the start of the practise The teacher in charge may also be phoned or ed (before the start of the practice) to excuse a child from practice Girls are required to wear Kingsmead sports kit for practices. It may consist of the normal Physical Education kit (gala/ match/meeting kit is not necessary) SPORTS FIXTURES Parents are to ensure that the girls are supplied with a healthy, nutritious lunch to take on the bus. No sweets, chocolates and fizzy drinks are allowed Girls must have enough water, sun block and a Kingsmead peak, cap or hat Girls wearing the incorrect kit will not be allowed to participate and will not be allowed to go on the bus At Athletics Meetings, Galas, Diving Competitions and Tennis Matches all team members are required to stay at the venue until the final results have been read and the last war cry has been sung Roll call will be taken at the end of each meeting/gala/competition/match and team members will then be dismissed by the coach or teacher in charge At Netball and Hockey matches team members are required to support the match following theirs before being allowed to leave If a girl needs to leave before the end of the sports fixture, the Head of Sport must be notified at least 24 hours before the start of the fixture TRANSPORT All girls going away to a sports fixture have to go on the bus All busses will leave from the Grail House gate at 13:10 unless stated otherwise an a letter If parents are asked to help with transport, all girls must meet at the Tennis courts at 13:05 where roll call will be taken. Parents and children will then depart form the Grail House Gate (never the main gate) Girls are to refrain from going to the tuckshop after school resulting in the late departure of the bus
3 ATHLETICS The team consists of U9 Open runners Compulsory trials are held before the start of the season where each child s time is recorded Times are again taken at the Inter-House Athletics Meeting as well as at every Inter-Schools Meeting Teams are selected according to the times taken Girls who have not been selected to the team may challenge every Monday at 1 st Break Each athlete s times are recorded and kept throughout the season If an athlete is sick, injured or does not set a good time at one meeting, she will not be eliminated, but her general time will be taken into consideration when choosing the team for the next meeting If an athlete did not participate in the Friday Inter-Schools Meeting, she has to challenge to get back into the team the following Monday at 1 st break All recorded times will be put on the notice board to enable the athletes to follow their and other athletes progress Girls not attending practices without a valid excuse will not be allowed to participate in the next meeting and will be required to challenge to get back into the team Teams are finalised each Wednesday and put on the notice board at 1 st break MEETING KIT All athletes are to wear the Kingsmead Athletics shirt and shorts to meetings Only white socks and takkies will be allowed In case of bad/cold weather the athletes are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only No athlete may have nail varnish on her fingers or toes SWIMMING The team consists of U9 Open swimmers Kingsmead has an A and a B Swimming team The A Team swimmers compete in 50m galas and the B Team in 25m galas Compulsory trials are held before the start of the season where each child s time is recorded Times are again taken at the Inter-House Gala as well as at every Inter- Schools Gala Teams are selected according to the times taken Girls who have not been selected into the team may challenge every Monday at 1 st Break If a swimmer would like to move up from the B Team into the A Team, she has to challenge on a Monday during 1st break, swimming 50m Each swimmer s times are recorded and kept throughout the season If a swimmer is sick, injured or does not set a good time at one gala, she will not be eliminated, but her general time will be taken into consideration when choosing the team for the next gala
4 If a swimmer did not participate in the Friday Inter-Schools Gala, she has to challenge to get back into the team the following Monday at 1 st break All recorded times will be put on the notice board to enable the swimmers to follow their and other swimmers progress Girls not attending practices without a valid excuse will not be allowed to participate in the next meeting and will be required to challenge to get back into the team Teams are finalised each Wednesday and put on the notice board at 1 st break GALA KIT All swimmers are to wear the Kingsmead costume and cap at galas If the swimmer wears a double costume both costumes have to be the Kingsmead school costume Swimmers are required to have the Kingsmead towel at galas Only white socks and takkies or white, green or yellow slip slops will be allowed In case of bad/cold weather the swimmers are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only No swimmer may have nail varnish on her fingers or toes HOCKEY Kingsmead has 2 Teams in each age group (U10 Open) Compulsory trials are held before the start of the season where all the Hockey coaches select the different A and B Squads During trials players will be placed randomly into different teams according to positions played the previous year Selectors will receive a sheet with only the player s number and space for comments, to finalize the selection Players are selected according to fitness, skill, commitment, attitude and willingness to learn After the trials a squad will be selected The different coaches will then select a final A and B team Each team will have their own coach Age groups practice at the same time to enable the A Team coach to also identify improvement/new talent in the B Team Attempts will be made to ensure that the A Team coach umpire the B Team match to enable the coach to identify improvement/new talent in the B Team When a player does not perform or cope in a certain team/position, the coach will make the necessary changes Players must realise that selecting certain players, moving players around and playing the girls in certain positions is done according to the coach s discretion If a girl has not been selected to the A or B Team and is interested in trying out for the team, contact must be made with the teacher in charge to make arrangements to attend practices Girls not attending practices without a valid excuse will not be allowed to play in the next match and will be required to challenge to get back into the team
5 MATCH KIT All players are to wear the Kingsmead sport shirt and skort at matches Only the yellow Hockey socks and takkies/hockey boots will be allowed In case of bad/cold weather the players are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only, this needs to be taken off before going onto the field to play a match Each player must have her own mouth guard, shin guards and hockey stick, without these, she will not be allowed to practice or play a match NO jewellery will be allowed on the field, i.e. no watches, rings, bracelets, etc. Hair must be tied up and away from the face NETBALL Kingsmead has 4 Teams in each age group (U9 Open) Before the season starts, compulsory trials are held for the U10 Open players All the Netball coaches select the A, B, C and D squads in the various age groups During trials players will be positioned on the court according to the position played during the previous season Previous teams will be mixed during trials Coaches will each receive a list of the players on the court, not knowing which teams they have played in previously Comments will be given on each player and the necessary suggestions and opinions will be made Players are selected according to fitness, skill, commitment, attitude and willingness to learn Only squads are selected, teams are NOT finalized on trial days Coaches will receive the information of all the players in the different squads when practices start The coaches will then select a finalized A, B, C and D team One coach will be responsible for the A and B teams and another for the C and D teams. Coaches will be able to identify improvement throughout the season and players will be given a fair chance to move up into a team. When a player does not perform or cope in a certain team/position, the coach will make the necessary changes Players must realise that selecting certain players, moving players around and playing the girls in certain positions is done according to the coach s discretion U9 players will be selected at practices every week, according to progress made throughout the week The U9 girls will be taught to play comfortably in all positions. During matches they must rotate and play in different positions (Rule of Mini-Netball) If a girl has not been selected into one of the teams and is interested in trying out for the team, contact must be made with the teacher in charge to make arrangements to attend practices
6 Girls not attending practices without a valid excuse will not be allowed to play in the next match and will be required to challenge to get back into the team MATCH KIT All players are to wear the Kingsmead sport shirt, skort white socks and takkies at matches In case of bad/cold weather the players are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only, this needs to be taken off before going onto the court to play a match NO jewellery will be allowed on the court, i.e. no watches, rings, bracelets, etc. Hair must be tied up and away from the face TENNIS Kingsmead has two league teams (A and B Teams) and two non-league teams (C and D Teams) Each team consists of six players During the first Term season the teams only play Doubles matches During the third Term season the A Team plays Singles as well as Doubles matches The A and B Teams consists mostly of grade 6 and 7 players, but if another player is good enough to cope, she will also be given a chance to play in the team The rest of the players will be selected into the C and D teams and matches will be arranged where possible The tennis rankings will be done according to a ladder system At the start of each season a tournament will be held to determine the ladder If a player wishes to improve her ranking on the ladder, she may challenge a player no more that two placings above her on the ladder Challenges will take place on Mondays at 1 st break The Teacher in Charge must be notified in person by both the challenger and challenged on the previous Friday at 1 st break In case of absenteeism without a written note by either the challenger or challenged, the player present on court on Monday will move into the challenged position Players will be selected according to the ladder by the Teacher in Charge in conjunction with the coach All practices must be attended in order to be selected for a team MATCH KIT Practices: Players must have a racquet, takkies, cap/peak and proper Kingsmead sports kit. Without the necessary sports gear, they will not be allowed onto the court All players are to wear the Kingsmead sport shirt, skort, white socks and takkies at matches. In case of bad/cold weather the players are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only, this needs to be taken off before going onto the court to play a match Each player must have their own tennis racquet to be allowed to practice or play a match
7 Players will be allowed to play wearing a Kingsmead cap/white peak Diving Kingsmead has one Diving Team consisting of four divers in each age group from U/9 to Open In order to qualify for the team, divers must have the correct dive requirements for the competition and only the U/9 age group will be allowed to use one novice movement in the competition Team divers are expected to attend all training sessions allocated to diving Selection of the teams will be based on the divers ability to do the required dives and divers with a higher degree of difficulty in their dives will take preference, over divers with a lower degree of difficulty The divers are expected to be able to dive from both the one meter board and the three metre board Divers in a junior age group may be selected to dive in a higher age group if they are considered to be better divers than those in that particular age group All divers that compete will have their results recorded for every competition and the results will be used for further selection and for diving awards at the end of the season MATCH KIT All divers are to wear the Kingsmead costume The Kingsmead white shirt and PE shorts must be worn over the costume Team members must have at least one Kingsmead towel and are allowed another dark green towel divers may need more than one towel for both training and competitions Only white socks and takkies or white, green or yellow slip slops will be allowed Due to the negative impact of the sun, girls may wear a kingsmead peak or school hat at the competition In case of bad/cold weather the swimmers are allowed to wear the new Kingsmead tracksuit or the Kingsmead fleece top only Long hair will be braided for the competition No diver may have nail varnish on her fingers or toes CROSS-COUNTRY The team consists of U9 Open runners The Inter-House Cross-Country event will serve as trials Times are taken at the Inter-House Cross-Country Meeting as well as at every Inter-Schools Meeting Teams are selected according to the times taken Girls who have not been selected to the team may attend all practices and will be given a chance to run at meetings in order to improve her time Each athlete s times are recorded and kept throughout the season
