We all enjoyed swimming and diving in our new heated pool, dining and drinking on our new boardwalk, relaxing under the sail shades on the newly renovated tennis patio, and lounging on our new pool chaises and lounge furniture. In addition, we welcomed 35 new families to Coveleigh this year! As 2016 comes to a close, we can consider ourselves lucky to have a growing, vibrant membership and a truly beautiful club for all to enjoy. And there is more in store for the future! This winter we will be improving our ever-popular Tiki Bar to increase seating, provide better TV viewing and facilitate better service. In addition, we will be forming a committee to discuss a revamp of the Cove restaurant and bar over the course of the next year. Our lovely West Porch will be getting an upgrade as well, with new seating areas and higher quality décor. A committee will also be formed to discuss remodeling the upstairs of the carriage house with the potential of adding a yoga studio and gym in the future. Our assessment comes to an end in December, and we have sufficient funding for all new planned projects. We value your opinion! 2 When To Drive The Ball in Paddle Driving Off the Deck One of the primary objectives of the drive is to set up a short ball. If you are trying to win the point outright on your drive, you will make too many errors and probably lose. Placing the drive in an awkward spot or making your opponent reach is how you will produce a short ball or an outright error. The two instances for hitting drives are (1) directly off the deck and (2) after hitting the deck and then the screen. Both drives have their time and place. Hitting the wrong drive under the wrong circumstances will greatly diminish your odds for success. Here are some general guidelines for choosing when to drive the ball. Driving Off Screens It is better to drive the ball off the deck when the ball is short in the court. The short ball will allow you to step into the blue, where it is safest to drive. When you drive from the green, you risk hitting off balance and getting drop-shotted. Your focus should be on early preparation, lots of small adjustment steps, a contact point at your waist that is just ahead of your left foot, and finishing over to your left shoulder. If you can make your opponent reach, you should expect an error or another short ball. The 2016 Coveleigh Lawn Bowling Season is now completed and the Green is closed for the season. The Committee would like to thank all the members who participated in making the 2016 Season Exceptional. A special thanks to the committees that ran the Opening Luncheon, Frank C. Lowe Memorial Day Tournament, Red, White & Blue Tournament, Super Bowl Tournament & BBQ, Men vs. Women's End of Season Tournament, Closing Luncheon and the Awards Dinner. Time to start thinking about the 2017 Season. We need all Lawn Bowlers reporting to Spring Training 2017 in shape and ready to bowl. Off Season Exercises and Tips for lawn bowlers. While considering injuries during lawn bowling one may tend to think, what can go wrong in lawn bowling? How can anyone possibly get injured in lawn bowling. Although lawn bowling is a game not requiring sprinting, throwing or Jumping, people playing lawn bowling can still get sprains, strains and breaks! Apart from the younger lawn bowlers at Coveleigh that are still lacking in skills & experience, you may see championship matches at Coveleigh or even on ESPN where most bowlers are 55 years of age or above. I have also noticed in recent years that the Women's Lawn Bowlers seem to be in better physical shape then the Men. Men time to get in shape. The exercises below stretch different parts of the body and have been adapted to be easier and safer for more senior players. (All but one exercise are done sitting): It is better to drive off the screen when the ball is hit deep and fast. Letting a deep, fast overhead go into the screen will bring the ball forward into the court and improve your position to drive. The ball is already traveling toward the net, so it is important to abbreviate your back swing so you won't overhit it. The ideal contact point is between your waist and chest. When you let the ball drop below your waist, you risk hitting it into the net. If you position yourself behind the ball and move with it as it proceeds back towards the baseline, the ball seems to slow down for you. Therefore, it is easier to place the drive at the specific spots you are aiming. Remember, don't try to hit it too hard. 6. Hugging no one. Easy exercise, just put your arms straight in front of you, then open them out as wide as you can. Repeat this 10 times Big Nods. Look down to your toes and then up to the sky 10 times Shoulder Rolls. Roll your shoulders back 10 times then forward 10 times Looking Behind. Sitting in a chair place both hands on one hip then turn your body towards that side. Repeat 5 times each side with a 10 second hold Back of thigh stretch. Sitting at the edge of your seat, straighten one leg, and then reach towards it until you feel a stretch at the back of your thigh and knee. Hold 10 seconds 5 times each leg Calf stretch. Have your hands against a wall for balance, place one leg in front and one leg behind. Make sure both feet are pointing forwards, and then bend your front knee until you feel a stretch in the back leg. Hold 10 seconds 5 times each leg. Men, if you can try these exercises at least twice a week, I'm sure you will be in tip top shape for Lawn Bowling in Again Congratulations to Nancy Pepe for being honored with the Frank C. 3 We hope all our Coveleigh divers and swimmers are practicing hard in the off season. Please watch for the 2017 season registration date in March. On October 20th, a group of Coveleigh ladies came out to play paddle in the 2nd Annual Kate Cup, in memory of Kate Muldowney. Kate was an enthusiastic and competitive paddle player and the sunny, fun-filled day was the perfect way to celebrate Kate while playing one of her favorite sports. After all your shopping is done, relax and read a good book for the holidays! The Coveleigh Book Club will be reading My Notorious Life by Kate Manning We will meet on January 11, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the front parlor. There is no December meeting.
