1 May 3, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 1 Thursday May 3rd, 2012 California Bowling News P.O. Box 4160, Downey, CA Online: news@californiabowlingnews.com Office: (562) Fax: (562) Asbaty Claims 2012 Queens Title ARLINGTON The last time Diandra Asbaty of Chicago reached the championship match of the United States Bowling Congress Queens, she bowled a match to forget. On Tuesday night, she bowled a match she will never forget. Asbaty defeated USBC Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin- Ballard of Keller, Texas, , to win her first career major title at the 2012 USBC Queens presented by Storm. In 2007, Asbaty also advanced to the Queens final but lost to Kelly Kulick, This time she would not be denied. Asbaty needed a strike and seven pins in the final frame and threw three perfect strikes to lock up the win at the International Training and Research Center. I m still in shock and literally feel like I m in a dream, said Asbaty, a 14-time Team USA member. It s every girl s dream to step in the 10th against a bowler like Carolyn and throw a strike to win. She was one of my idols growing up and really inspired me. Asbaty said the experience in 2007, when she lost as the Queens top seed, helped lead her to the moment she experienced Tuesday. If I could take what happened in 2007 and change it, I still wouldn t do it, said Asbaty, who was the No. 3 seed in Tuesday s finals and picked up $20,000 for the win. That moment and that heartbreak made this win possible. Dorin-Ballard, who earned $10,000 for finishing second, got at least nine pins down on every ball in the title match and struck seven times, but a 7 pin in the ninth and a 10 pin in the final frame opened the door for Asbaty, who tossed the final six strikes. Am I disappointed, absolutely, but I put the ball in the pocket and you can t control what happens sometimes, said Dorin-Ballard, who won the Queens in Now it s time to work a little harder and get ready for the U.S. Women s Open in June. In the semifinal, Asbaty took down second seed Stefanie Nation of Grand Prairie, Texas, Asbaty closed with nine straight strikes as Nation failed to gain any traction in the match. Asbaty moved on in the night s second match by defeating Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Asbaty opened with four consecutive strikes and led by more than 20 pins the entire game. In the opening match of the night, Johnson started with a spare and six consecutive strikes as she built a 34-pin lead halfway through the game and went on to defeat Josie Earnest of Nashville, A total of 131 of the top bowlers competed in the Queens, which featured a prize fund of $110,000. While drilling bowling balls at PINS & NEEDLES Pro Shop BWAA to Honor R.F. Corderman 2012 Luby Hall of Fame Award ARLINGTON A man who elevated the coverage of bowling in his region for more than 40 years, R.F. (Robert Frank) Corderman (pictured), has been voted the newest recipient of the Luby Hall of Fame Award by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Corderman, 60, was known mostly for his ability to cover all aspects of the West Coast scene through the pages of the Pacific Bowler, with which he was affiliated from He set standards for regional coverage in areas such as wheelchair bowling, senior news, the youth level and, of course, the PBA Regional Tour. That, along with his insightful voice covering the issues via his Pin Action column, made PB a must read not only in his area of coverage, but well beyond. He started his journalistic career as Editor of the Citrus Bowler in San Bernardino, Calif. He left that newspaper after four years to join the Pacific Bowler in Garden Grove, Calif. He moved up through the ranks to eventually become Editor-Publisher of the newspaper, a post he held with his wife, Berdalee. While there, he (and his wife) also served in the same capacity for 10 years with the San Diego County Bowler. For more than 25 years, starting in 1976, he was the publicist for the Professional Bowlers Assn. Western Region. Again, he set a standard that was hard to match. R.F. covered all of our regional tournaments, remembered PBA lane man Lenny Nicholson. He was awesome. He showed up for every re- in Hemet, Mike has been able to become more familiar with his equipment and make better on lane adjustments. The result is better scores and more wins. This win was worth $1,000. DeVaney had a tough field to beat with two of his competitors, Eddie Van Daniker and Dave Wodka, being recent Bowl for a good cause... just cause... R.F. Corderman gional event, and always wrote a great story. I never met anybody who covered the regionals as well as he did. He also put together the regional program book. He was all business and admired for his tenacity. As a result of those efforts, he was named the Pat Patterson Award recipient for his regional contributions. Only PBA members were eligible, but PBA Regional boss Ted Hoffman Jr. secretly bought R.F. an associate membership so he could be presented the plaque at a Southern California Bowling Writers All-Star Awards Banquet. Beyond that, he was a longtime president of the Southern California Bowling Writers, which presided over the annual Southern California Bowling Writers All-Star Awards Banquet. This is his third Hall of Fame honor. He was named to the Southern California Bowling Hall of Fame for meritorious service, and selected by the Orange County Bowling Assn. Hall of Fame for meritorious service. He retired in 2004, and he and Berdalee now are living in Bedford, Iowa. PBA Tournament of Champions finalists. However, with games of 298, 290, 279 (three times), and 268 he glided through the winner s bracket and into the finals. 3 May 3, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 3 NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione AUDETTE S 773 TOPS DEAF TRAVEL AT LINBROOK ANAHEIM It was indeed a tough act to follow. The bowlers of So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League could not repeat at Linbrook Bowling Center its hot scoring in the last session at Brunswick Covina Lanes. There were no 900 (4 games), not even a 800 as Robert Audette led with 773 from Gorman Low who led at Covina with 911, could only score for 752. Bob Bergan had steady games of for 714 and Francisco Navarro who rolled a 910 at Covina, had a 214 but failed to reach 700. William Golyer made the list with his 211. There was a strange upset at Linbrook as the powerful league leader Navarro s Covina suffered a rare loss being beaten by lowly bottom dwelling Bergan s Whittier 13.5 to Covina s 6.5. No worries for Covina as it already built a distant lead that with one session remains for the rest of teams to battle for 2nd place. Second place S F Valley, without its star bowler Bob Jones, managed to win 12.5 to 7.5 over 5th place Low s Mid City. S F Valley hangs on to 2nd place for the coming final position round contest against powerful Covina in which S F Valley must win at least 12 points to lock up 2nd place. Third place Glendale, a 11.5 to 8.5 winner over 7th place Riverside, dropped to 4th place as former 4th place Orange County moved up to third with a 15.5 to 4.5 win over 6th place L A City. In the coming final position round Orange County will face Glendale. The other pairing will be 5th place Mid City against 6th place L A City and Whittier s win over mighty Covina moved it out of the cellar and will face Riverside in the battle to keep out of the cellar.. The league thanks Linbrook s management for hosting and will move on next week to Del Rio Lanes for the final position round on May 6 at NOON. Note: The league had selected Keystone Bowl on May 20 at 11 AM.for its season ending sweepstakes. BRONZE COACH ROBERT ELLISON WILL OFFER BOWLING TIPS HERE We have good news. To get the ball rolling (pun intended), I selected a question submitted by Lindsey, one of our youth bowlers. While very basic, it is profound in nature and I m curious what Mr. Felege will have to say. Are you ready coach? Steve: I am, but before we get started I d like to apologize for that interview. I probably shouldn t have fallen asleep like that. By the way, your floor is very comfortable. Carol: Don t give it another thought, Steve. We re pretty easygoing here. We just threw a few left-over copies of our paper on top of you and went about our business. By the way, you snore. Steve: I know. Can we please move past that and get this show on the road? What s our first question? Carol: Your first question is...is bowling really a sport? Your response? Steve: Yes, bowling is a sport. Next question. Carol: Not so fast, Bucko. This is a coaching column. You have to explain your answer. Steve: I knew there d be a catch. Okay, the question was, Is bowling a sport? Well, a sport is defined as a physical activity which is a source of competitive diversion and/or recreation. By definition, bowling fits that description. Like other major sports such as baseball, football, basketball, tennis, golf, etc., bowling is about athletic achievement and competitors are referred to as athletes. Training, both physical and mental, is required to improve their performance. The answer to our young friend s query is so obvious that I am more curious about its source. I suspect that the question she really meant to ask was, Are bowlers athletes? If that s true, my best guess is that this young lady is fairly talented and regularly beats the snot out of her competition (probably her brother). To salvage his ego, he says something like, It doesn t matter that you won; bowling isn t a real sport anyway! Well, miss, not only is bowling a real sport by any definition your competitor cares to use, you are a gifted athlete. Stay with it because you are only going to get better. Losers who use bully tactics to destroy your self-esteem will remain losers. Carol: Not bad, coach. Here, this is for you. Steve: What s this? Carol: A bag of peanuts. Steve: For what? Carol: It s your pay. While you slept on our floor last week, we negotiated your contract. Did you know that you also talk in your sleep!? <l :) Have a question about bowling? them to us at: news@ californiabowlingnews.com. 5 May 3, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 5 American Bowlers Tournament Association P.O. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: Alpine Tran Tops 312 Entrants! Lacha and Magada Share Match Game of $3,500 Match Game Estimated at $1, will be $1,300 at La Habra 300 and Match Series Estimated at $950 ABTA at La Habra 300 for HDCP Bonus Qualify Saturday at 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM Semis 8:00PM LAKEWOOD We returned to Cal Bowl Lanes and a nice turnout of 312 entries came out on Saturday and bowled on a fair semi-tough shot. We had 164 bowlers during our final squad at 6 pm, with a total of $1,099 in the side-pots paying three places each game, and $366 a game for your total of $7.00. The cut scores were + 61 for the men and + 31 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Dino Cantoria (+60), Sun Sundara (47), and for the women it was Bobbie McCollum (20). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 74 bowlers making it to the semi-finals, with 72 bowling. Top Qualifiers were Kurt Valmonte with a For the women it was Pretty Dana Fong with a +99. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. The top seed Kurt drew the Match Series. This time it was worth $532. He drew a 405. No one matched this score during the qualifying squads. We will estimate the Match Series at $800 at La Habra 300. The last bowler for the roll-off was Godfrey Galsim. When he came up to shoot for the $1,200 he missed on his first shot, so he will get a $50 as a consolation. In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Thomas Licauco and Sam Wu with a 1445 for $190. Finishing second was Tim Tran and Tony (Alpine) Tran with 1445 for $170. There was a total of $2,730 paid out in doubles and 37 paid spots with low to cash of After bowling all 3 games for the semi-finals, finishing in first was Alpine Tran with a Finishing in 2nd during the semi-finals was Kmel Cunanan at a He sat out the first round. Our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. Tony (Alpine) Tran drew a 131. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had two bowlers who shot that score, they were Yen Lach and Gilbert Magada. They will each get $1,750. We will estimate the pot at $1,300 at our next event at La Habra 300. This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Marvin Crowder, Steve Brode, Aileen Cheung, Thomas Licauco, Samson Kong, Leo Silva, and Armand Garcia, they received checks of $115 each. In the second round, the losers were Andrew Lung, Charles Weeks, Johnny Tran, Kmel Cunanan. They received checks of $130 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. In this round we saw Kurt Valonte (5th seed) bowling Kristine Soliman (12th seeed). We would see a match where the scoring would be high (an exception in the match play). Kristine threw a big score of 266 to 218 to advance to the 4th round of match play. In the other match we saw Christopher Eguilos (8th seed) bowling Christina Cheung (16th seed). In this match, it would be Christopher who continued his hot bowling as he would take out Christina in the end with a 195 to 170 finish to advance to the next round. Both Christina and Kurt finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $145 each. Our semi-final match was (562) (562) (562) (Cell) (562) (Cell) abta Tournament May 5 La Habra 300 Bowl 670 e. In the weekly horses we would see Kristine paying $86 and Christopher paying $55 if they would win their match. In this match the scoring was tough at this time of night, and the match stayed close thru the first 6 frames with Christopher holding a slim 5 pin lead. But an open in the 7th frame allowed Kristine to jump out ahead by 5 pins and then another open in the 9th frame allowed Kristine to come up in the 9th and 10th frames with a chance to put it away. She got a strike in the 9th frame and just needing a mark in the 10th to seal the victory. She left the after the first shot, but was able to pick it up and got 9 on the fill ball to finish with a 166/220 to 155/192 and advance to the title match. Finishing in 3rd place was Christopher Eguilos this week for $200. For those lucky investors that had Kristine as a horse, she paid $86. The title game was set and it would be Kristine Soliman against the top qualifier Alpine Tran. Alpine elected to start the match first. Alpine started off with a spare. That would bring up Kristine who also started out with a spare. She got another spare in frame two, and an open by Alpine jumped her to a 21 pin lead. But an open in the 3rd by Kristine allowed Alpine to get back within 14. It stayed that way in the 4th frame as both bowlers got marks. But a double by Alpine in the 5th and 6th frames and an open by Kristine in the 6th allowed Alpine to get a 4 pin lead. Kristine would double in the 7th and 8th frames to jump back ahead by 3 pins. The BRY-LAW Super Sweeper Sidepot Bowling News is proud to bring you... Chuck Pezzano Dean of Bowling Writers, PBA & USBC Hall of Fame PIN POINTS TO PONDER...Yes, averages can vary as much as 40 points from bowling center to bowling center....never thought I d see the day when bowling balls came in as many colors as Easter eggs....many adults list bowling as their sport but they only bowl once a month....only a few bowlers can stand prosperity on the lanes, particularly when an opponent is having it all....in most sports the spectator is fulfilled by identifying with the player in action rather than through the action. In bowling most fans are also doers in competition as well as watchers, so they gain from both areas of the sport....some people bowl because they want to be with their mates, family or friends. And some people bowl because they want to get away from their mates, family or friends....why can t high average and all other bowlers understand that the USBC is not merely an award giving organization but is deeply involved in all forms of services for a modest membership fee structure one of the lowest in sports....a channel ball is one that in error goes into the depression on either side of the lane. Formerly it was known as a gutter ball, and before that it was a poodle....a bowler can usually tell how good his or her reputation is by how difficult it is to live up to it....we have some great trick shot bowlers but the master was the late, great Andy Varipapa who was still in demand when he was 90. He went through all the various bowling balls from wood on up and he dazzled in person, on TV, in the movies. He had control, confidence, and his main aim was to communicate with his audiences, letting them know that he wanted to please them....it is no knock not to win, but it is tragedy if you don t give your best effort....top pro golfers, and even some that aren t top rated, can win a million dollars and more in a single tournament. Top pro bowlers still get special praise when they reach the million mark in their careers. That s hardly fair. But remember we didn t even have true professional bowlers in any numbers in their own niche until Pro bowlers travel the world seeking the many tournaments that are making roll for pay more and more universal....if more bowlers would read all the rules before they enter tournaments, and more tournament directors, individuals or groups, would check bowlers before they bowl, there would be a lot less post tourney problems....if tourney entry fees, travel, by any means, car, train, plane, hotels and food costs continue to escalate, nearby tournaments will have their own special appeal, in the head and in the purse. Start out by rolling in your county and state events....the happy ending to too many nights of bowling is the simple fact that the night has ended. 8 Page 8 BOWLING NEWS May 3, 2012 BIG PRIZES AWARDED AT AMF NATIONAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT IN VEGAS Four finalists win $50,000 in prize money in year s richest bowling tournament Richmond Thousands competed, but only the strongest of the strong were crowned champs at this year s $700,000 AMF National In-League Tournament. After two-days of eliminationstyle competition, AMF Bowling Centers is proud to announce the country s best in league bowling. It was our third year and our biggest and best yet. Once again, our league bowlers demonstrated an impressive level of skill and sportsmanship, AMF CEO and President Fred Hipp. It s our pleasure to celebrate the sport of bowling and award these top finishers with a great experience and some extra and well-deserved cash The chase for bowling glory began with more than 25,000 contestants. After several rounds, 108 finalists secured spots in the National In-League Tournament. The finalists, each an AMF league bowler, were divided into four divisions. The divisions are based upon the skill level of the bowler and their qualifying bowling average. Competitors were whittled down through an elimination-style format to determine the national champions. Although only one person in each division was crowned the $50,000 grand prize winner, every national finalist walked away with prize money, ranging from $25,000 for second place to $250 for the bowlers finishing in 17th to 27th place. The nature of the pins-over-average format creates excitement through each round of competition and illustrates the competitor s ability to perform under pressure and compete at a level above their qualifying average, said Kathy Hart, Tournament director. Each year, we look forward to experiencing the competition right alongside the bowlers and awarding them for their accomplishments. Division winners worked their way through a nine-week qualifying period, followed by two weeks of in-center finals at each AMF location and 27 district finals events at select AMF locations nationwide. AMF already has awarded approximately$300,000 in prize money to center and district finalists. AMF will announce details of the 2013 Tournament in early summer. Bowlers interested in participating can sign up for a league at any AMF location this coming fall. 11 May 3, 2012 BOWLING NEWS Page 11 PBA s Summer Shootout Returns to 10pin lounge in Chicago May Bowling ball manufacturers teams to do battle in unique ESPN television series CHICAGO (April 27, 2012) Four of the top 2012 PBA Chris Schenkel Player of the Year candidates Jason Belmonte, Mike Fagan, Sean Rash and Pete Weber are among the starstudded players who will return to upscale 10pin bowling lounge in downtown Chicago May for the 6th annual PBA Summer Shootout. The made-for-tv event will once again feature a battle of bowling stars representing bowling ball manufacturers in a fast-paced PBA Summer Shootout series for telecast on ESPN. The PBA Summer Shootout weekend will get underway with a special pro-am event at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 27. Eight Eliminator Round tapings will be conducted Monday, starting at noon. On Tuesday, the final two Eliminator Rounds get started at 1 p.m., followed by the Eliminator Doubles Shootout and four Baker Doubles stepladder finals matches. The preliminary Shootout telecast schedule begins on ESPN Saturday, July 7 and continues Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15. ESPN2 will carry re-airs of Shootout telecasts on Sunday, July 8, Saturday, July 21, Saturday, July 28, Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5. Telecast times will be announced at a later date. It s great to get to come back to downtown Chicago for Memorial Day weekend, said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. The city has a rich bowling history and last year s event had one of the best pro-ams I ve ever seen in 10pin s cool surroundings with 20 of the top players in the world. The 2012 installment of the PBA Tour s post-season special will include the sport s most accomplished players representing nine of the bowling industry s best-known bowling ball franchises in a series of elimination and Baker doubles contests along with a pro-am event for Chicagoland grassroots league bowlers. Teams must include a minimum of two players and teams with more than two players on their roster may substitute at their discretion: Teams and players competing are: Storm: Jason Belmonte, Osku Palermaa and Pete Weber 900 Global: Robert Smith, Missy Parkin and Brian Voss Roto Grip: Wes Malott, Brian Kretzer and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard DV8: Mike Machuga, Ronnie Russell and Brian Valenta Brunswick: Sean Rash, Ryan Ciminelli and Chris Loschetter Track: Mike Fagan and Mika Koivuniemi Columbia 300: Dan MacLelland and Chris Barnes Hammer: Mike Wolfe and Bill O Neill Ebonite: Tommy Jones and Jason Couch The 2012 PBA Summer Shootout will get underway with one member of the nine ball-brand teams bowling in each of 10 Eliminator Rounds. In the Eliminator Rounds, each player will throw one shot, with the low score in each frame eliminated. In cases of ties, the players involved will bowl sudden-death until one survivor remains. Make no mistake, while this event is guaranteed to be fun and exciting for fans to watch on site and as it plays out over the summer months on ESPN, the radical format means it will be a unique tightrope walk for players that will have them on edge fighting for survival from the first ball, Clark said. Players who represent the top bowling ball brands will be fighting for bragging rights and the prize money is significant, so it figures to be intense competition. In each Eliminator Round, players will earn points for their respective teams based upon how long they survive. The winner of each round will earn 12 points, second place eight points, third seven points, etc., down to one point for the first player eliminated (ninth place). There will be 10 Eliminator Rounds, each resulting in a half-hour show for delayed telecast on ESPN. At the conclusion of the 10 shows, teams will be seeded for the Summer Shootout finals based upon their points totals. The top four teams automatically advance to the Baker Doubles stepladder finals. Teams seeded five through nine will then bowl in an Eliminator Doubles Shootout with the winning team claiming the fifth spot in the stepladder finals). In the Eliminator Doubles Shootout, both members of each team will throw one shot and their scores will be combined for the frame. The low doubles score each frame will be eliminated until one team remains. The final four half-hour shows will feature Baker format matches where one member of each team will bowl five frames per game. The No. 5 team will take on Team No. 4 in the first show. The winner will take on Team No. 3 in the second match. The match two winner will bowl Team No. 2 in the semifinal contest, and the semifinal match winner will meet Team No. 1 for the title. Admission will be free for the entire weekend. For pro-am entry information, visit pba.com and look for the PBA Summer Shootout logo.
