1 HSIE STAGE FIVE ACTIVITIES TEACHER S GUIDE The following two task sheets have been designed for teachers teaching HSIE Stage 5 Topic 3 Australia between the Wars They provide students with experiences that will enable them to confidently participate in discussions of the inquiry questions What were the differing experiences of various groups during the interwar period? What was the contribution and significance of at least ONE Australian, ONE important event and ONE political development during the interwar period? Students will work towards the outcomes 5.1 explains a social, political and cultural development and events and evaluated their impact on Australian life 5.4 sequences major historical events to show an understanding of continuity, change and causation 5.5 identifies, comprehends and evaluates historical sources 5.6 uses sources appropriately in historical enquiry 5.7 explains different contexts, perspectives and interpretations of the past 5.8 locates, selects and organises relevant historical information from a number of sources, including ICT, to undertake historical inquiry. The task sheets have been designed to give teachers the flexibility to use an excursion to The International Cricket Hall of Fame (TICHOF) as part of a comprehensive study of the topic or as a standalone activity that can be integrated into other topics of historical research. Teachers are encouraged to use the sheets as they see fit, however the task sheets have been designed to cater for the differing academic levels of students within the stage. For example: The first sheet, The International Cricket Hall of Fame Research Task includes three research and note taking tasks at TICHOF with an additional assessable post-excursion research assignment. The length of the response and period for completion to be set by the teacher. This task sheet provides the opportunity for advanced students to undertake a deeper analysis of the topic area. The second task sheet, The international Cricket Hall of Fame Excursion Task, features five research and note taking tasks to be undertaken at TICHOF with the option to expand upon and complete the answers at prior to the next lesson. Teachers wishing to make a day trip of their excursion may wish to take their students on the Bradman Walk. A level, self-guided tour of Bowral that includes Sir Donald Bradman s childhood homes, where he went to school, where he worked and other significant sites, 1.7 km approx. 45 min. Brochures are available through TICHOF of may be downloaded at The walk may also be viewed online using Google Maps or Google Earth. Preparation for activities In order to help student gain the most from their experience at TICHOF or on the website, we suggest that teachers introduce students to the concepts of the inquiry questions prior to visiting. To further prepare students undertaking the excursion have them find the TICHOF website and locate the information on Sir Donald Bradman as a reading task in ACTIVITY QUESTIONS DEVELOPED AND PROVIDED BY OXLEY COLLEGE, BOWRAL NSW Page 1 of 6
2 class or for homework. Longer, biographical essays on Bradman s life (suitable for students at this stage) can be found at The DVD Bradman (90 mins), that can be found in the box set The cricket box : Bradman and the Invincibles Sydney : ABC, discs, rated G, is useful as an introductory or consolidation exercise. The DVD features an interview with Bradman (and former teammates) discussing his working class childhood in Bowral; employment and the Great Depression; the war years; and various significant professional achievements. Scene selection is by question topic, allowing teachers to easily select essential information. Post excursion consolidation Suggested assessable in-class or homework activities, that challenge students to question Sir Donald Bradman s significance, include: In addition to your research, observations and experience at TICHOF identify at least three historical sources relating to the life and times of Sir Donald Bradman. Using these sources as evidence, write a eulogy or ode to Sir Donald Bradman. Be sure to include the important dates within his life; his most significant achievements (on and off the cricket field); the historical context of his achievements; and his significance with in Australian society. The resources used in your research must be accurately cited. In addition to your research, observations and experience at TICHOF, identify at least three historical sources and develop a five minute digital presentation highlighting the significance of Sir Donald Bradman s contribution to Australian society in the interwar years, evaluate if his contribution is relevant to Australian s today. The resources used in your research must be accurately cited. In addition to your research, observations and experience at TICHOF identify at least three historical sources and develop a five minute digital presentation depicting Australian life in the Great Depression and the role of identities such as Don Bradman. The resources used in your research must be accurately cited. Imagine you are an Australia cricket fan living in the 1930 s, create a probable character and write 8 diary entries that detail your experiences over any period of time. Be sure to note your characters feelings about their personal situation, their experience/reaction to at least one major world event, and their observations and opinions of Don Bradman (or other cricketers of the time). To undertake this task you will need to draw upon a variety of historical resources, such as newspaper articles, images, film footage, radio broadcasts, advertising or historical texts. The resources used in your research must be accurately cited. ACTIVITY QUESTIONS DEVELOPED AND PROVIDED BY OXLEY COLLEGE, BOWRAL, NSW Page 2 of 6

In particular many returned soldier s, who d given their youth and their efforts to World War One, were now out of work and felt unvalued. Consider the following aspects of Bradman s career, in relation to this period. These are only suggestions; you are encouraged to come up with more aspects through your own research. 1. Why, what was the context that enabled him to? 3. Values Sport unites people; Sir Donald Bradman believed cricket was the greatest character builder of all sports.
