Welcome Back! It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating our 2 nd XI premiership and packing up the rooms to handover to the footy club as season 14/15 came to a close, yet here we are in September 2015, where has the time gone. After a much deserved rest, we are now only a couple of weeks away from the 1 st game. We wish all of our senior, vets and junior sides all the best for the coming season. 2015/16 Committee We are pleased to announce that the Mill Park Cricket Club committee is as follows. 2 Presidents Message Hi All, Welcome to Tiger News, our new club newsletter that will be circulated monthly throughout the season. Our committee will keep you updated with all the news from both on and off the field. We hope you enjoy it and welcome feedback on what you would like hear about in these newsletters. I m very proud and honoured to become the 17 th President of this great club. Many thanks to the support of the new committee and the exciting work that has already gone into preparing for season 2015/2016. We welcome Leigh Stewart back to the tigers as our senior coach and also Matt Nyhus from Gladstone Park joins us as our First XI captain and assistant coach. Both will be terrific additions to our club and will play a major part in improving our on-field performances. We have again brought two players in from Sri Lanka with DVCA comp medallist and club champion, Prabath, back to the Tigers along with his good friend Sajith Kalumpriya who joins the club for the first time. Numbers have been great at senior training with numerous new faces, which means we will have a fourth senior side this season as well as aiming to get a one-day team up. In the off-season our committee has also looked at some changes to the social calendar, a social membership which offers great value ($50 membership and receive a $50 club card) so encourage friends and family to become social members and come down throughout the season to watch some cricket or attend some fun events. I am excited by the year ahead and look forward to seeing everybody back at the Den. Rob Knee great people, great culture, great results Are YOU with US! 2 P a g e E d i t i o n n o
Junior News In junior news, we have been working with other DVCA clubs to see what we can introduce at Mill Park to improve our junior program. We will once again offer a Milo in2cricket program on Sunday mornings and junior teams from Under 10s through to Under 16s. Thank you to Kris Marshall, Damien Geraghty, Matt Harris and Mark Stoneham for coaching our junior sides this season, we still require more help from parents and senior players, so please speak with your respective coach or contact Kris Marshall if you can assist with our junior program in any way. We are also excited by the prospects of fielding an Under 16 side this season. It has been 5 seasons since we fielded a stand-alone u16 side and this is an important age group to assist with transitioning juniors into senior cricket. Good luck to all our junior players, we hope you have plenty of fun this season. Club sponsors Club sponsorship is the backbone of any local sporting club and we are no different at Mill Park CC. Operating the club comes with many expenses and our registration fees only go a small way to contributing to such costs. We rely heavily on sponsors and successful social events to fund the club s operations. The club has a number of sponsorship packages to suit the need of local businesses. We can announce Bank of Melbourne, Bubba Pizza, and Sounds Right Speech Pathology as new sponsors for this season and along with many of our existing sponsors who are on board again, we greatly appreciate their financial assistance which keeps membership and playing costs as low as possible for our members. We encourage all members to circulate the sponsorship packages to your own employers and/or friends & family who may be interested in promoting their business through a partnership with the club. Please see the club website under Sponsors for further details about packages, as well as information on each of our sponsors. 3 P a g e E d i t i o n n o
Sad goodbyes Unfortunately the off-season has brought about some sad news with the passing of Charlie Elliott. At just 33, Charlie lost his battle with cancer. A dangerous leg-spinner and dynamite in the field, Charlie played a pivotal role in our club s only Money Shield premiership. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him, Charlie had an amazing way to put a smile on your face and his memory will live with all of us forever. We will be honouring Charlie with an annual award named after him. For those that missed it highlights from season 2014/2015 Our second XI won the D Grade flag defeating Lower Plenty in the Grand Final. This is the clubs 13 th senior flag and 27 th overall in our proud history. Prabath Priyankara became the first Mill Park CC player to win the competition medal for best player in Money Shield as voted by the umpires. From our First XI, Prabath won the Club Champion award and First XI bowling average. Mahesh Kumar won the First XI batting average. Terrific result for both our overseas players. Batting average awards went to Luke Petersen (2nds), Gareth Cockshutt (3rds), Karl Kaiser (Vets), James Power-Wallace (u14s), Blake Harris (u12s one) & Jordan Kearney (u12s two). Bowling awards went to Kris Marshall (2nds), Andrew Vellalonga (3rds), Tony McMaster (Vets), Jarrod Kitto (u14s), Julian Marshall (u12s one) & Carter Arnold (u12s two). Aaron Mills and Julian Marshall both played for the DVCA in representative cricket. Aaron in the Under 21s and Julian Marshall in the u12s. Wayne Roberts, Justin Lyon & Aaron Mills reached their 150 games for the club. Nathan Olivieri reached 100 games for the club. 4 P a g e E d i t i o n n o
The Tiger Ten Introducing the Tiger Ten where we will find out a little more about the people within the club. In this edition, we put the heat on the some of the committee we promise the players will be much more entertaining than these three! The Tiger Ten with Dickie Name: Rob Knee Nickname: Dickie Born: Ballarat in 1984 Junior Club/s: Mildura West & Mill Park Tiger matches: 139 First played for the Tigers: 1997 Current roles at the club: President & senior player 1. What do you do to earn a living? Club Development Manager at Tennis Australia 2. Where did you play junior cricket? Mildura West Cricket Club then Mill Park. 3. Best junior cricket memory? Watching Waddles destroy countless bowling attacks including in our memorable u16 semi final win against Bundoora. 4. Who is the best player to play for the tigers? Other than Brad Hodge & BJ (Brendan Joseland), probably Luke Petersen but I was in awe of players like Rob Ljubic and Wayne Chadwick when I was younger. 5. What do you enjoy most about the club? The hour (or few) after each match where we enjoy a drink together and the banter that comes with it. 6. Best memory at the club? Winning a 2nd XI flag this year 7. An embarrassing/funny moment on the cricket field? Taking 4/80 off 20 overs and then bowling a 13-ball over never been able to bowl since. 8. The club you like to beat the most? Changes from year to year but I guess over many years I really enjoy beating Bundoora. 9. Opposition are 9/145, chasing 150 with one over left. Which team mate would you want bowling the last over? Bogga (Kris Marshall) 10. We need 20 runs off the last over, who do you want at the crease? Adam McLaughlin and Prabath. 5 P a g e E d i t i o n n o
The Tiger Ten with Bogga Name: Kris Marshall Nickname: Bogga Born: Reservoir in 1971 Junior Club/s: Tiger matches: 186 First played for the Tigers: 1999 Current roles at the club: Vice-President, Junior Coach, Senior Player, Vets Player 1. What do you do to earn a living? Account Management at Aberdeen Paper 2. Where did you play junior cricket? School cricket at Thomastown West Primary School 3. Best junior cricket memory? Captaining the school team 4. Who is best player to play for the tigers? Luke Petersen 5. What do you enjoy most about the club? Members understanding that the club is always bigger than the individual. 6. Best memory at the club? The Money Shield Premiership 7. An embarrassing/funny moment on the cricket field? Dropping Glenn Turner from Research when he was on 9, he went on to make 200 not out. 8. The club you like to beat the most? Mernda 9. Opposition are 9/145, chasing 150 with one over left. Which team mate would you want bowling the last over? Prabath 10. We need 20 runs off the last over, who do you want at the crease? Adam McLaughlin 6 P a g e E d i t i o n n o
The Tiger Ten with Culps Name: Shane Culpin Nickname: Culps Born: Carlton in 1972 Junior Club/s: Coburg Socials Tiger matches: 47 First played for the Tigers: 2011 Current roles at the club: Secretary, Returning Vets & Senior Player 1. What do you do to earn a living? Manager at Reece Plumbing Diamond Creek 2. Where did you play junior cricket? Coburg Social 3. Best junior cricket memory? 1 st ever premiership under 14s at Coburg Socials 4. Who is best player to play for the tigers? Other than myself it would be Kris Marshall & Brendan Joseland. 5. What do you enjoy most about the club? Being around and meeting great people 6. Best memory at the club? 2014/15 D Grade Grand Final win, seeing my son win a grand final with a great bunch of blokes. 7. An embarrassing/funny moment on the cricket field? Funniest moment is always playing with or watching Kevin Nolan, the bloke thinks he can bat. 8. The club you like to beat the most? Don t hate any DVCA club but St. Francis did beat us in my first granny at Mill Park, so probably enjoy beating them more than most. 9. Opposition are 9/145, chasing 150 with one over left. Which team mate would you want bowling the last over? Kris Marshall 10. We need 20 runs off the last over, who do you want at the crease?
