8 5 Comprehension - Newspaper Article "If you find one, the best thing to do is turn your lights off, open your doors and windows, and encourage them to go outside," Ms Kelly said. "But don't touch them, or try and grab them." Microbats expected to invade Adelaide homes as winter sets in, prompting warning over rabies-like virus. 18 May 2015, 11:03am The nocturnal bats are about the same size as a mouse and can slip inside through windows or chimneys. The website for Adelaide Bat Care, a 24-hour voluntary rescue and advisory services, said the bats should not be disturbed if they were found hibernating because they could lose fat and storage supplies accumulated for their slumber. It asked to be contacted if a bat is found. Sue Westover from voluntary organisation Fauna Rescue said she typically received a maximum of 10 calls a year to remove hibernating bats from houses. Animal Welfare manager Deb Kelly said there would be an influx of small bats across Adelaide over the next couple of weeks as the species looked for places to hibernate until spring. She said calls usually came from residents who had bats hibernating in their houses over several winters, and who decided to do something about it after seeing reports that they could carry a rabies-like virus. "They normally rest in hollows in trees but if they don't find a hollow they will go for roof spaces. They are only the size of the mouse they can get in open windows or anything," she said. She said they did not pose a threat to pets but a very small percentage carried the Australian bat lyssavirus that could be passed to humans. "But it's only 1 per cent of the bat population that has it," Ms Westover said. She said she received other calls about bats that might have flown inside a house chasing an insect. "Generally you'll find it's mainly older houses, old country homes," Ms Westover said. "I might get four calls a year that a bat has flown into the house and it's normally because they left a door or a window open."
