1 BOWLING NEWS Page 1 Thursday California Bowling News P.O. Box 4160, Downey, CA Online: news@californiabowlingnews.com Office: Fax: Gerald Kawaguchi Wins $100,000 at ABT Fall Nationals Las Vegas Gerald Kawaguchi from San Jose, CA didn t even know he had won the ABT King of the Hill Fall Nationals at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa until PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen shook his hand and offered his congratulations. But, the unassuming man had just bowled his way to a $100,000 1st Place prize by defeating Darnell Pearson of Baltimore, MD in a two game championship showdown. These two bowlers endured the pressure of single-game eliminations with Gerald fighting his way through a field of 147 Classic Semi-Finalists and Darnell from a field of 78 Master Semi-Finalists. Gerald calmly rolled his Black Hammer down the 2nd arrow while Darnell powered his way through the 5th arrow in a back and forth match. Gerald methodically picked up a spare in the 10th frame of the second game to lock out his opponent for the championship. Gerald is 58 years old, married to Susan and has 3 children - Kris, Nicole and Alisha will use his winnings for their college tuition. Gerald bowls out of Joe Dailey s ABT Bay Division where he says he s thankful for the tough shots he puts out. Gerald would also like to thank the ABT National staff for all their hard work during the week. Six other champions were crowned in the optional events ($1,000 1st Place Prize for each): Scratch Division, Steve Badovinac, Parker, CO; Seniors Division, Go-Go Brown, Lakeside, CA; Super Seniors Division, Stan Takeuchi, Upland, CA; Tour of Champs Division, Susan Schlink, Chicago, IL; Gold Members Division, Luis Boone, Mission Hills, CA and South Point Invitational Division, Dennis Kasprzak, Draper, UT. (Oct. 24, 2011) - As the centerpiece of the 2011 Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling and the first major championship of the season, the PBA World Championship will again live up to its name when a field of PBA and international stars from more than 15 different countries convene at South Point Bowling Center on Nov. 4. Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, will be on hand to defend his 2010 victory in the World Championship, a upset win over top qualifier Bill O Neill of Southampton, Pa., that proved to be a milestone victory for Barnes. With the title, he became the sixth player in history to complete the PBA s Triple Crown and in all likelihood locked up his eventual election to the PBA Hall of Fame. The elite Triple Crown club (consisting of titles in the U.S. Open, PBA World Championship and PBA Tournament of Champions) includes Billy Hardwick, Johnny Petraglia, Pete Weber, Mike Aulby and Norm Duke all PBA Hall of Famers. As an integral part of the 2011 World Series of Bowling, the PBA World Championship will again be a unique test of physical and mental abilities. In 2010, for the first time, qualifying for the World Championship included rounds on five different PBA animal patterns the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark. Combined pinfall totals for qualifying in those five rounds earned Barnes the No. 4 slot in the stepladder finals. He then won four consecutive matches, defeating Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., ; Finland s Osku Palermaa, , and Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., , en route to his match with O Neill for the $50,000 first prize. In 2011, the PBA World Championship will be decided in similar fashion. The entire World Series field will bowl eight games each on the Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark patterns. After 32 games, the top 60 (based on a field of 240) will advance to an eight-game cashers round. After a total of 40 games, the top qualifier will earn a $5,000 bonus and the top 16 will advance to a series of ES- PN-televised divisional elimicontinued on page 15 Dig Up Some Fun This Weekend! 3 Page 3 BOWLING NEWS Wong Rights The Wrong! Grant Fires 2 Perfecto s! by Aimee Gomez Downey Team 3 took four from first place Team 12 thanks to Vernon Adams /770, who just makes bowling look easy, and his mates. Harry Wong had to make good on his perfect game this week, and did just that in his second game, shooting /744. Bruce Williams joined in on the score fest with his /733 set. The team put together a 1029 second game, and Team 12 just did not have enough this week to get more than game three. David Cogswell, stud that he is, only shot /720 to lead his team, and while he got a hand from Art Jones /706 and Arnold Cheesman /672, the team definitely missed their anchor. Team 7 got off to a quick start, with two of their bowlers looking like they were going to throw perfect games. Only one got it done, although the other, Mike Villareal, led the team with his /732. Perfect game Matt Garcia /724 was next and Ron Peter /684 pitched in. Team 7 slowed down and Team 6 was able to snag the last game. Larry Gray /750 led the pair, while Leonard Ruiz /708 and Ramon Torres /648 also showed up. Andrea Snyder did not want her boys to beat her, so she shot /768 to lead the pair and her team to a sweep over Team 14. We should probably give a little credit to Greg Neuer, who also had a perfect second game, /741, Mike Cammarata /704 and Kevin Valmonte /682 who helped. Ramiro Garcia /750 tried to keep up with Andrea, but did not get enough help from David Bartlett /649, John Chapman /646 and Nick Wilson 223/615, as necessary to get any points. The battle on was tight, but in the end Team 9 walked away with four from Team 10 thanks to Kurt Arakaki /733, Rick Easley /662, Kevin Yamauchi /635 and Katrina Fujikami /618. Raul Rosales /719, Steve Gurrieri /679 and Brian Main /621 got the second game by nine sticks. Team 11 lost four to Team 1, and they reacted the same way other teams have to very similar scenarios. Johany Polony, who cannot miss much throwing the ball as hard as he does and even managed a 31 mph shot this week, led the pair with his /756 set. Adam McKenzie went front nine /684, Kevin Peterson /683 and Charles Weeks 211/601 all contributed to the take down of Tony Burrell /686, Billy Myers Jr /671, Larry Stephens /639, and Thurmond Davis 279/630. In the corner, Tri Star Vending got their first sweep of Team 13, compliments of Jared Lawrence /734, David Yamauchi /701, Mark Myers /653 and the super tall Larry Campbell /631. Paul Barraco /661, Anthony Barone /642, Deeronn Booker /637 and Charlie Kinstler /633 all bowled sub average and paid the price. Team 4 had an interesting evening as they swept team 5. Brandon Grant had bookend 300 games for his /799 series to lead the pair and the league. Joe Torre /713, Clyde Lumpford /707 and Jeremy Glover /638 also pitched in. They shot a 1026 third game just to throw some salt on the wound. Eric Snow /701, Paul Varela /683 and Jeff Seesholtz /675 had a bit of a handicap this week, and fell back down to the last place match. This week s final pairing was between Team 2 and Team 15. Danny Ontiveros /778 continued his one ball wonder streak of leading the pair and Team 2 to the sweep. Apparently if you bowl leadoff on that team, you shoot 760, which is precisely what Sam Hitchcock did with his games. Mike Faraci completed the reverse stepladder with his clutch fill ball for a /672. George Reister /695 and Ricky Kilgore /681 were high for Team 15, but could not handle the obviously awesome second to last place Team 2. Next week is the final week of this round, and looks like it will be a fight to the finish despite how the round started. 4 Page 4 BOWLING NEWS ball brushing against your thigh on the way back and glancing off your ankle as it moves forward. The first is distracting; the second hurts (a lot)! By themselves, either of these scenarios will force your ball off that all-important target line. More importantly, they will destroy both your concentration and your confidence. Note: Bouncing a bowling ball off your ankle even once will make for a very long night! To avoid this, you will compensate by swinging your arm out and away from your body. Since the ball is going along for the ride, it will follow the same path, which is an arc. Only one point on that arc is in the direction of your target! Consistency will be impossible! the continuing story by Steven Felege CHAPTER 5 The Armswing No skill is more important than the armswing. It develops ball speed and ensures that it stays directed along the target line. It develops your timing. It enables a smooth release! It even plays a role in determining how much your ball will hook after it is released. Performed properly, your armswing is a tremendous asset! Screw it up and it becomes your worst nightmare! Inconsistent armswings cause more bad shots than all the other skills combined! Technique 1. The down-swing. Immediately at the end of your pushaway, allow the ball to just drop! The other arm will automatically swing away to maintain your balance. Focus on keeping your arm straight and your wrist rotated to position your hand directly under and then behind the ball. 2. The back-swing. As soon as your arm is vertical, apply the brakes to gently bring the back-swing to a halt before it can twist your shoulders out of alignment with the target. Focus on keeping your hand directly behind the ball. 3. The forward-swing. As the direction of your armswing changes, shift your mental focus from your wrist position to your release point. Do not power the ball forward! 4. The follow-through. Don t worry about the follow-through! Deliver the ball correctly and the follow-through will happen automatically. It is an indicator of your success, nothing more. Tip: During the execution of the armswing, forget about the ball! It is only along for the ride! Tip: During the execution of your armswing, only three points require your attention: 1. The drop point, which occurs at the very end of the pushaway. 2. The stop point, which is the end of the back-swing. 3. The release point. Physically, the armswing is complicated; the mental portion must not be! Keep it simple by thinking, Drop, stop and roll! By focusing on these three points and hitting them consistently, you ensure repeatable, accurate shots. Discussion The armswing is what separates great bowlers from everyone else. It is the most challenging skill to master for a number of reasons: It s a sneaky little devil. You can t see it! It drops out of sight at the end of your pushaway and then stays out of sight until after you have delivered the ball. This skill is a mental exercise! The armswing mechanics are more complicated than those of any other skill. It must coordinate with your walk. It has four very distinct parts: the down-swing, the back-swing, the forward-swing, and the follow through. Mentally you must deal with each one separately! The secret to taming this skill is found in an engineering adage called the KISS principal. This acronym stands for Keep it simple, stupid! Any engineer will tell you that the simpler something is the more reliable it will be. When considering the development of your armswing, it is helpful to think of the motion of a pendulum. This is just a ball hanging from a string, swinging back and forth, tracing the same path, over and over again. It s exactly what you want to accomplish: an arm that swings your ball along its target line over and over again. That concept is simple enough, but your ball is not swinging from a string. Your mechanism is infinitely more complex! There are hundreds of muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, and joints involved. The question you may ask is, How do I make my hand, wrist, arm, and shoulder act like a simple string? The answer is, Find one thing that makes everything else behave like a simple string! That one thing is the position of your wrist! The wrist defines the alignment of everything else in your armswing mechanics. It also predetermines how they will interact with each other. All you need to do is find the one wrist position that makes your arm swing the ball in the direction of the target! Here are three tips to help you develop an effective and consistent armswing, one that generates adequate power while keeping the ball on the target line: Tip 1: As stated, focus on maintaining your wrist position. Your wrist is the most important anatomical structure in your armswing. It moves side to side, it flexes, and it rotates! A good wrist brace will control variations in the side-to-side and flexing movements. This allows you the freedom to mentally focus on its rotation that, in turn, affects the direction of your armswing! An approach lasts a mere two to three seconds. That s enough time to focus on only one thing, and that must be the rotation of your wrist. This will create the consistency required for pinpoint accuracy over and over again. Remember, control your wrist and you control the whole armswing! FYI: The rotation of your wrist is described by the position it creates for your thumb in relation to the face of a clock. If your wrist is positioned so that your hand is under (or behind) the ball, this is referred to as the twelve o clock position. The thumb is pointing straight up like the hour hand of a clock indicating the noon hour. If your wrist places the hand directly on the side off the ball, this is called the nine o clock position (for a right-hander). Your thumb would be pointing at the number 9 on a clock face. The importance of this is not only how it relates to your armswing technique but also that it affects how much your ball will hook, a consequence to be discussed later. Tip 2: Keep the armswing compact. Based on your individual anatomy, your armswing has physical limitations built into it. The farther you try to go beyond those limits, the more inconsistent your swing becomes. A compact armswing avoids those limitations. Tip 3: Leave your ego at home! Ego is bad! It turns you into your own worst enemy! It is emotional, and emotions prevent a rational thought process. When you are delivering a bowling ball, you have a job to do! Teammates are relying on your skills, and you need a clear head to perform your best. Remember, the armswing is a mental exercise. Calm, rational thinking is required and ego will actually work against you. A perfect example of this is the ringing ten-pin. In this scenario, you make a beautiful shot! The ball rolls perfectly into the pocket and pins fly everywhere, but when the dust settles, there stands that ringing ten-pin! The bowler that lives inside you will say, Hmm! That ball must have come in a little lighter than I thought. To make this spare, I need to move my stance nine boards to the left and deliver my next ball between the third and fourth arrows. If you made the mistake of bringing your ego to the lanes with your, it will scream, Freakin ten-pin! I ll teach you a lesson! Needless to say, your next shot is heading straight for the gutter, hopefully on its own lane! Get it? Of course, the next words the ego will say are, These lanes suck! All this happens while others watch! Which voice do you really want to listen to? Now, let s take a look at the individual elements that make up a productive armswing. The down-swing: In your stance, you rotated the wrist so that your hand was under the ball (or as close to this as your individual anatomy would comfortably allow). During the pushaway, you maintained this wrist position. Why? So that during the down-swing, your arm, unaided by muscle power, could simply drop straight down and imitate a pendulum. This action takes advantage of gravity to accelerate the ball. Since nothing is more reliable than this natural law, use it to achieve consistent ball speed rather than tiring the muscles in your arm. Another reason the 12 o clock wrist position is important is that it keeps the ball from striking you. A 9 o clock wrist position (3 o clock for a lefty), coupled with a true pendulum swing may result in the By concentrating on keeping your wrist rotated to the 12 o clock position, you minimize the chance of the ball making contact with you during any part of the armswing. This simple act has other significant benefits: It focuses your mind on technique, allowing you to ignore other distractions (like Mark). It actually causes your arm to swing straight along the target line! This brings consistency to the direction of your shot and enables you to focus on the next element, the back-swing. It keeps energy loaded into your shot. Up to this point, the use of muscle power has been kept to an absolute minimum. Here is where it begins to come into play. The natural position for your hand is to face the body; the 9 o clock position is for righties ; the 3 o clock, for lefties. It requires the use of muscles to force the wrist clockwise or counterclockwise, which was done in the stance. Any rotation maintained in your wrist here will be reversed later. When you release the ball, your hand will be rotating in the opposite direction, causing the ball to hook. Performing this task to a set position makes it consistent, reliable, and predictable. Best of all, this will happen automatically. Another important facet of your approach happens automatically at this point. The momentum of the down-swing will cause you to arch your back forward. This is a natural consequence of human anatomy interacting with the laws of physics. This is where your forward lean should happen because it will have a minimal effect on the speed of your walk. Remember, you do not want to rush to the foul line. Crouching forward tends to increase the pace of the feet, but the ball swinging backward slows you down. These two actions counteracting each other give you one less thing to think about! The back-swing: If the armswing is the hardest skill to master, the back-swing is the hardest element of this skill to master! This crucial element will destroy your entire delivery! How? By twisting your posture out of alignment. The techniques you have learned so far have gotten the ball on a line and enabled you to keep it there. So far, so good! In the back-swing, however, you are moving in one direction but the ball is moving in the opposite direction. The laws of physics dictate that some force is required in order to change the direction of the ball. This force will tend to twist your torso. If this happens, your shoulders will no longer be square to your target and your armswing will no longer be on its target line! There are two ways to deal with this, and you must pick one of them: One way: Compensate for the twist by mentally visualizing a sheet of glass that runs along your target line. Maintain your armswing within that glass. This thought process is used by golfers to aid in developing the swing of their club. The advantage of this technique is that it permits the development of a power swing, one that goes very high during the back-swing. The disadvantage is that it tests the physical limits of your anatomy, which, as previously discussed, leads to inconsistency. A better way: Prevent the twisting altogether by controlling the back-swing. You will sacrifice some power for the sake of accuracy, but remember, bowling is a game of skill, not power! Any accuracy you can gain is an advantage, especially when you consider how little power you have to give up in order to achieve it! The secret to preventing shoulder twist is to determine the natural upper limit of your back-swing and then never allow it to go beyond that point. To do this, stand erect with both arms hanging straight down at your side and the palms of both hands facing forward. Simultaneously, move both arms straight back as far as they will comfortably go. This simple exercise defines the upper limit of your back-swing: Your swing-arm is as far back as it will go, and your shoulders are still square with your target. Just to satisfy your own curiosity, drop your other arm down and see how much higher you can make the swing-arm go - probably quite a bit. Now, notice that in order to achieve the higher back-swing, you have rotated your wrist out of position, turned your shoulders, or bent at the waist. Any of these can cause the types of inconsistencies that destroy scoring ability but are synonymous with the power swing. Ironically, the controlled back-swing can also develop considerable power but does so in a very different way. When you apply the brakes, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are used. Because the hand is rigidly positioned behind the ball at this stage and your shoulders are being kept square to your target, these structures absorb all the energy created during the down-swing. They return that energy to the ball during the forward-swing. How? Good question! To bring the back-swing to a halt, force is generated by your muscles. This force continues to be applied even after the ball has stopped, but now accelerates the ball toward its target. This is extremely reliable because it happens automatically, generating power yet maintaining the consistent accuracy of your shots. To keep your shoulders square, it is imperative that you do not apply additional muscle power at this point! Whichever back-swing you select, the importance of maintaining the rotation of your wrist remains the same as discussed in the down-swing. Since The Essentials of Bowling is about teaching you the best techniques possible, the rest of this chapter is written assuming you have chosen the better technique, the controlled back-swing. The forward-swing: By controlling the back-swing and maintaining your wrist position, the stage is set for the forward-swing. You must still ignore your natural instincts to apply additional power to your shot. The ball is still behind you and the conscious application of additional power, at this point, will pull your shoulders out of alignment. This will cause your shot to go off-line! At the beginning of the forward-swing, shift your focus from the wrist to your release point. This strategy removes the control you exert over the muscle groups governing the wrist position and shifts it to the muscle groups that will rule the fingers as they lift the ball out onto the lane. This allows the following good things to happen automatically: Energy was stored in your armswing to stop the back-swing. That energy is now released, accelerating the ball naturally and automatically along the target line. Because the controlled swing keeps the back-swing lower than a power swing, the ball is much more likely to arrive at the foul line at the exact moment as your sliding foot. This is perfect timing. Focusing on the release point keeps the shot on the target line. Focusing on the release point allows the wrist to begin to unscrew itself. It rotates back in the direction of its natural position. This reversal of the wrist s rotation continues throughout the remainder of the armswing, placing the fingers on the side of the ball during the release. In this position, they impart rotation to the ball, causing it to hook. 4. The follow-through: This occurs after the ball has been released. As a part of the armswing skill, it is unimportant. It is something which happens properly if you have delivered the ball properly; nothing more! It is, however, an important indicator. If the follow-through lines up with your target, you made a good shot. If it ends to the right of your target, your wrist was rotated too far clockwise during the backswing. This is true no matter which hand you use. If you are right-handed, this causes your back-swing to go behind your back, which makes your forward-swing go out to the right. For left-handers, this causes the back-swing to go out and away from your body, which means the forward-swing will head to the right. If the follow-through ends up to the left of your target, your wrist was rotated too far counterclockwise during the back-swing. For right-handers, this causes the back-swing to go out and away from the body, which makes the forward-swing go to the left. For lefties, this problem causes the back-swing to go behind your back, which means the forward-swing will move out to the left. In any case, the follow-through indicates how well you made your armswing behave when you couldn t see it. Don t practice the follow-through. Practice paying attention to what it is telling you! A lot of things happen during the armswing. By performing the elements of this skill as described, most of those things will happen automatically. They will be consistent, reliable, and predictable, More importantly, this skill will help you to strengthen your mental game, which will produce better results in the form of higher scores for you! Tip: Like the stance and pushaway, the armswing is a skill that can be practiced at home, in front of a mirror. Pay close attention to what happens to the direction of your armswing with various wrist positions.

5 BOWLING NEWS Page 5 American Bowlers Tournament Association P.O. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: E. J. Rogers Stars in his 2nd ABTA Championship Big Pots at Forest as All Pots Carry Over Match Game is $3,500 Match Series est. $ is $3,000 ABTA at Lake Forest Lanes for 1 Day Event Beginning this week is our 3 week Handicap Bonus Special ANAHEIM Welcome everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We returned to Linbrook where we saw 172 entries come out and support the ABTA. This week our Sponsor 900 Global was present to run a Ball Demo where you could come out and try their new equipment. We look forward to our return to Vegas where they will be back to run another ball demo while we are there. We had a good shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +79 for the men and +45 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 1 female) were D.A. Wright (78), Rico Cayton (59), Angelina Nillo (40), and Sun Sundara (64). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 43 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week. For all qualifying squads, our top qualifier for the Men was Chris Kelly with a +170, and for the women it was Aileen Cheung with a Each of them get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth $300. Chris drew a 605. We had no bowlers that bowled this score so we will carry that over. This Saturday at Forest Lanes we will estimate the Match Series at $300. For the Roll off, the final person was Tim Lambeth who missed on his fourth shot. He got a $50 consolation. The 3/6/9 will be $3,000 at Lake Forest Lanes, as the pot maxes out at that, and we have a back-up pot that is growing huge also In our optional doubles, finishing in first were the pride of Mou Liu, John Phan and Michael Kong with a 1451 for $110. Finishing second was Everett Rogers and Derek Lee with 1449 for $90. There was a total of $850 paid out in doubles and 14 paid spots with low to cash of In the semis we saw a repeat leader with in Chris Kelly who would finish with a +115 to sit out and bowl for the title at Linbrook. Coming in second was Justin Ziegler with a +95 to sit out the first round. Both Chris and Justin were matched up together during the 3 game semis and both bowled big 3rd games to finish in 1st and 2nd during the semis. It took a +42 for the men and +30 for the women. Chris again, the top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. The pot is maxed out and we have a back-up pot that is $3,500 also. He drew a 287., and again, we had no bowlers who shot that score so it will be carried over. We will have $3,500 next week at Lake Forest Lanes, and continue to build on the second and third back-up pots. This week we had four new bowlers join us. Let us welcome these new bowlers to the club, Ken Jones, Eric Kim, Aaron Wilson, and Matthew Haas. This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Sonia Coronado, Vickie Wang, Angelina Nillo, Aileen Cheung (who lost to her husband Roy), Freddy Zamora, D.A. Wright, Wilson Cheung, and Joey Nepomuceno. They received checks of $100 each. In the second round, the losers were David Quon, Hong Kha, Michael Benavavides, and Justin Ziegler. They received checks of $ each. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $27 (E.J. Rogers) to a high of $81 (John Armenia) depending on who would win. In this round we saw John Armenia (10th seed) bowling Wai Li (4th seed). In this match, we would see another close match as John would hold on and advance with a 229 to 218 finish. In the other match we saw two of the local favorites in EJ Rogers (5th seed) bowling Derek Lee (12th seed). In this match it would be EJ who would continue his mastery over Derek whenever they bowl each other in a match with a 254 to 167 and advance to the semi-final match. Both Derek Lee and John Armenia finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $115 each. Our semi-final match was all set. Iit would be bowled on Lanes 31 and 32 this week as we were on the high side at Linbrook, and pitted our 5th seed against our 10th seed bowling each other. In the weekly horses we would see EJ paying $27 and John paying $81 if they would win their match. That would see his lead go away and John would now trail by 22 pins. That would prove to be enough, as EJ stayed clean. John was only able to throw a double in the 10th frame. 6 Page 6 BOWLING NEWS GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN NORWALK My friend, Lou Lewis passed way a year ago this month. Lou Lewis never got the credit he should of for what he contributed to bowling and to all the bowlers he mentored through this state and all through the country. Lou would always offer information about the great game of bowling at no cost to anyone. He was a great friend to myself and many bowlers! I could go to any bowling ally and mention Lou Lewis, and everyone would know who I was talking about. I meet Lou in the late 70 s. During that time, there were a lot of bowling and bowlers around the city of Los Angeles. I meet Lou at a bowling alley called Trojan Bowl off of Vermont in Los Angeles. Lou and his wife Elaine ran a restaurant in the bowling alley called the Greasy Spoon. I would eat the chili that Elaine would prepare, the best chili in town I thought! I would then go to practice my game until I got tired. Everyone was looking to improve their game. Trojan Bowl was a small house of only 12 lanes, this is where Lou mentored me in the game of bowling, he taught me techniques that has stayed with me throughout my bowling career. The three things Lou taught me was to keep my eyes on the target, having my shoulder parallel with my target, and to follow through. This stayed with me through my career. In 1978 I bowled my first 300 game at Roland bowl in the City of Industry. I led the tournament that day. I was so over whelmed that day! This was because of Lou. I lost the first two matches in match play. In 1985 at Grand Central Bowl in the Rodman tournament, I led the tournament for eight games, only to lose the tournament in the qualifying round to one of the best Bowlers in the state at that time, Chip Pettiford. I didn t mind because I lost to one of the best in the state. In closing I shared my prizes with Lou because of his teachings. In the last couple of years, Lou bowled a 300 game left handed. Originally he was right handed, but he knee went bad on him. I believe he still laughs about the 300 game he shot left handed. So, THANK YOU Lou for all the good times! Rest in peace. Visalia, California BOWLINGNEWSUDOKU PBA continued from page 1 nation rounds named in honor of four past PBA World Champions, all of whom are among the PBA s greatest players: Don Carter, Billy Hardwick, Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby. Carter won the inaugural PBA Championship in Hardwick, the initial PBA Triple Crown winner, won in Petraglia, also a Triple Crown winner, was the 1980 winner. Aulby, the first PBA Grand Slam winner, won the 1985 PBA Championship. The winner of all four divisional finals will then advance to the PBA World Championship finals which will follow the same elimination format. The highest seeded player remaining will select the lane condition for the championship round.
