5 YBC National Championships Guelph, Ontario April 22-24, 2017 Our Manitoba Youth had quite a showing at the YBC National Championships held in Guelph, Ontario on April 22-24, 2017, taking home medals in almost all of the events! Here are the Team Manitoba results: Girls Combo Team: Silver Boys Combo Team: Silver Bantam Boys Singles: Bronze Junior Girls Singles: Silver Junior Boys Singles: Silver Senior Girls Singles: Silver Senior Boys Singles: Gold The 3-game series of 837 is the fourth highest bowled in the history of 10 pin bowling in Manitoba. Clem bowled an 813 series at La Verendrye Lanes in 1994 breaking the Manitoba record at the time. Clem just celebrated his 25th anniversary win of the Bowling World Cup National Championships held in Winnipeg September 17-19, 1992! Only 3 weeks after he rolled a 279 triplicate in the same league, Clem bowled a 300 game at the Red, White & Blue bowling league on October 6th, This is his first 300 game to be bowled at Chateau Lanes. Congratulations Clem! Linda Tereck Shoots a New High Career Game! Congratulations to all!! Congratulations to Linda Tereck who bowled a big career high "266" game (which is 131 pins over her average) in the 59'ers League at Chateau Lanes on Sept. 27, This feat earned her a wristwatch from the Canadian Tenpin Federation (CTF) as part of their awards program. 42 3

6 Chateau Lanes Youth Program Editor s Note: This is a story that was in The Herald September 21, By: Sheldon Birnie Youth program aims to get kids bowling Manitoba Bowlers at the USBC Senior Championships Well, our Manitoba contingent at the 2017 USBC Senior Championships held in Las Vegas in August came home with pretty good results. Of the ten bowlers who competed, one of them made it to the Medal Round and finished in 4th place, and three others cashed in the tournament. The Chateau Lanes youth bowling program is run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Front row, from left: Richard, Melody, Wendy and Jennifer. Back row, from left: John, Dean, Randy, Steve, Claudio, Kevin, Elaine and Edwin. There s nothing like the sound of a bowling ball striking the pins. At Chateau Lanes (1145 Nairn Ave.), kids as young as three years old can get in tenpin action, thanks to the Chateau Lanes youth bowling program. "Bowling is a very affordable sport," said Jennifer Silvari, co-owner of Chateau Lanes. "We re looking to bring some fresh faces into bowling." A lifetime bowler, Silvari organizes the youth program with her sister, Melody Savage, who was once an elite bowler herself. Savage believes bowling is a great sport for a kid to learn, because it is a "lifetime activity." "And even if they re not in a league, they can bowl recreationally any time," she said. "And no one sits on the bench." 4 Mark Wojcik Other Results: Dorothy Wojcik 13th Mark Wojcik 4th (cashed + plaque) Wanda Howard 9th (cashed) Bud Quint 13th (cashed) Val Saltel 33rd Randy Kostenuk 29th Lauraine Chatelain 13th (cashed) Clem Perreault 29th Elaine Yamron 31st Jim Main 27th The complete results of the tournament can be found at: Champ_Home/2017_Results/ 41

7 WORLD SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Munich, Germany August 13 20, 2017 Every Saturday at noon, Chateau Lanes hosts its youth bowling program. Peewees (age three to seven) bowl two games for $7, while older groups (up to the age of 21) bowl three games for $10. Shoe rental and use of balls is included in the fee and the experience is free for first-time bowlers. "If you re questioning whether your son or daughter likes it, bring them out to try it," Silvari said. "Let s make it fun for the kids, so they want to get involved." While tenpin bowling balls are larger than the 3.5-pound five-pin balls, Chateau Lanes has balls starting at four pounds for younger bowlers. "For most kids, we can find four, five, six, seven, eight-pound balls as they get older," Savage said. The program also has a number of veteran bowlers who volunteer as coaches, to offer tips for young bowlers to improve their game. "Some kids just want to come out and do it for fun and not pursue it at another level, and then we have some who get more committed, who do tournaments, and go farther," Savage said. "We support our kids in however they want to bowl." The Senior Women Team (left to right): Sharon Tataryn, Laurie Griffith, France Joubert, Jill Clendenning-Friis In the women s team finale against doubles gold medalists France Joubert and Jill Friis and their team mates Laurie Griffith and Sharon Tataryn, the Americans, struck on six of their first attempts to put the game away well before the final frame, In the second game, the Americans took advantage of two splits by Joubert in the first and fifth frame, and sealed the victory with three consecutive strikes in frames 7-9, by Dorin-Ballard, Johnson and Barnes, Canada took the silver medal and Sweden and Japan tied for bronze. 40 From developing hand-eye co-ordination and mental focus to learning team work, Silvari and Savage both believe that getting kids into a sport at a young age holds many benefits. "It s fun, but they re also using a lot of muscle groups while bowling," Savage said. Silvari added that for parents with more than one kid in the program, an added benefit is that the whole group bowls together. "The kids all bowl at the same time, and it s affordable!" Bowling has clearly had a major impact on Silvari & Savage. The two sisters and their parents bought Chateau Lanes seven years ago, after being lifetime bowlers at the Nairn Avenue mainstay. Since then, they ve kept the business s focus family-friendly. "It was a family run business before, and we ve kept it family run," Silvari said. "It s a part of our family life." Seven years ago, the youth program started with 22 bowlers. Last year, they had close to 60. The group also hosts a Christmas party, and a yearend wind-up in April. While the program started in early September, it s not too late to join. "Kids can sign up any time," Savage said. "There s no cut off date." For more information on Chateau Lanes youth bowling program, call or visit Chateau Lanes Facebook page. 5

This is a bit of a milestone for Phil as he converted to a two-handed delivery style last season, and this is a sign of becoming more consistent with this drastically different style. It should be noted that Phil needed 3 strikes in the 10th frame of the 3rd game to accomplish this feat, and all the credit to Phil as he crushed the pocket on all three shots. Good job Phil! 32 13
