1 Golf Victoria 'Golf Club of the Year' BAIRNSDALE GOLF-BOWLS CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST Victorian PGA Regional Pro-Am Of The Year On August 10th. the Victorian Golf Industry hosted their Awards Night at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. The night saw Golf Victoria, Golf Management Victoria, the Victorian Golf Course Superintendents Assoc. and the PGA of Australia come together to celebrate the achievements of the people and clubs within the Victorian Golf Industry. Our Club was awarded the Victorian PGA Pro-Am Of The Year (Regional) for a second time coming after our 2015 achievement. Our Club Manager, Jeff Graham, and Treasurer David Pollard accepted the award on behalf of the Club. Sincere appreciation goes to our naming sponsor, The Big Garage Subaru, along with all other sponsors for their contribution to the success of this event. We acknowledge the vast amount of work put into the event by Pro-Am Committee Chairman Ken Boyd, his Committee and all volunteers and staff who worked tremendously well together to attain this result. This award is voted on by the professional golfers who play in these events. GIPPSTAR AWARD The 58th. Annual Gippstar awards were held on August 16th. Conducted by the Gippsland Sports Academy, our Club was the recipient of the 'Gippstar Club Of The Year' based on Club achievements over the Gippstar year. Jeff Graham, along with Club President Stephen Mann, were very proud to accept our Award. All members, both bowls and golf, should be mindful of the recognition awards like these give our Club. 1

BOWLING GREENS Craig Rimington Course Superintendent. Both greens have come through the winter well, some plug work has been done on the bottom green to patch some uneven areas. We have recently closed the top green so we could utilize covers on a few rink ends to help advance the grass growth. We plan to have both greens solid tyne aerated in coming weeks. PROGRAMME BOOK I am hoping to have our Programme Book out early next week (bearing in mind there is still a bit of work to do as the Pennant Draws only came out yesterday (Wed.). The book will contain a list of all members with phone numbers. If you have changed yours, or your address, please let me know a.s.a.p. Bev. 3 MATCH COMMITTEE Rose Watkins The number of teams entered for Saturday Pairs has dropped over the last month, so it has been decided our last game will be this Saturday, 8 th. September. The following weekend, Sunday 16 th. will be our Club Opening for the season commencing at p.m. Please bring a plate of afternoon tea to share. At present we can only accommodate 12 teams for our Monday Triples games due to the closing of the top green and some refurbishment of the bottom green in preparation for our upcoming 50 th. Anniversary Carnival on Saturday 6 th.,sunday 7 th. and Monday 8 th. October. We will be looking for members to help out, maybe filling up teams if single entries are received. Our social bowls on Thursdays are still going well with our 2 x 4 x 2 pairs being held this Thursday 6 th. (1st Thursday in the month), commencing at a.m., BYO lunch. ETIQUETTE ON THE GREEN It is universally recognized that the Etiquette in Bowls is made up of many little extra services and considerations one extends to one's opponents and one's team mates, that

The following are just a few of the courtesies that you can use which will create a harmonious atmosphere that will be pleasant and enjoyable for all who play the sport.

But, it is the implementation of the latter that the best spirit of sportsmanship is manifested and this applies particularly to bowls.

6 ETIQUETTE ON THE GREEN It is universally recognized that the Etiquette in Bowls is made up of many little extra services and considerations one extends to one's opponents and one's team mates, that in their totality gives Bowls its enjoyment and unique ability for making warm and lasting friendships. The following are just a few of the courtesies that you can use which will create a harmonious atmosphere that will be pleasant and enjoyable for all who play the sport. In all branches of sports there are written and unwritten laws which govern play. The former are obvious and are there for all to read. But, it is the implementation of the latter that the best spirit of sportsmanship is manifested and this applies particularly to bowls. It is good manners to inform your opponent if you wish to leave the green. Don't walk about or cast shadows when a player is on the mat. Do not let your shadow rest over the jack. Pay your skip the respect of waiting for direction, do not make up your mind what shot to play. If you lose, be a good loser. CONSIDER IT AN HONOUR TO BE SELECTED IN ANY POSITION IN ANY GAME. Be polite and friendly to your opponents, including not using offensive language. Introduce each player at the start of play. Respect the laws of the game and the role of the Umpire. Do not distract the player on the mat and make sure you are not standing in front of the view of the boundary pegs. Do not move at either end of the rink where it may distract the bowler. Watch you bowl until it stops and learn from the shot. Concentrate on the game and the state of play. Admit a fluke shot when you play one and remember it when your opponent gets one later in the game. Team members should not clap a 'lucky' bowl - remember it's a poor bowl with a good result. Remain behind the mat within the confines of the rink and walk up the green after the player has left the mat and in a direction which allows the player to see the path of their bowl. Excuses for bad play should not be blamed on the condition of the green, wind or weather conditions. These conditions are the same for all players. Keep silent while others are delivering their bowls and remain outside their line of vision. Remember, you get out of the game what you are prepared to put into it. PLEASE NOTE BOWLS VICTORIA RULE FOR MOBILE PHONES 43.2 Should a Player have a legitimate reason (personal emergency, medical or emergency services personnel) to answer a mobile phone they must have permission from the Controlling Body and notify the Umpire of the day prior to playing. If approved, the phone can be carried on the player but must be on silent / vibrating (only) and responded to on the bank away from play. 6

MIDWEEK PENNANT Helen Everett Mid Week Pennant starts on October 30 th. Many players will know about the following but it doesn't hurt to be reminded.

By the end of the practice sessions we will be better able to select the players on ability, which we must do. We plan to have Pennant practice on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. commencing on September 13th.

The Club has entered one side in Division 2 and one side in Division 3. A total of 20 players are required plus emergencies.

We have 31 players listed so some players are going to miss out on a game at some stage, but we do have to select players on ability.

The most important thing is that we must practice. In the past that has not been a priority for some players but we won't reach our full potential unless we do. By the end of the practice sessions we will be better able to select the players on ability, which we must do. We plan to have Pennant practice on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. commencing on September 13th. There will also be a short game with both Midweek and Saturday players at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 18th. There will be sheets on the notice board to list your name for all practice sessions. The Club has entered one side in Division 2 and one side in Division 3. A total of 20 players are required plus emergencies. We are suggesting one emergency go to the games, in uniform, in case a player has to retire from the game for some reason. We have 31 players listed so some players are going to miss out on a game at some stage, but we do have to select players on ability. The selectors will be as fair as possible so we hope you will be understanding. There are also sheets on the notice board to list your name and a cross on any date you are unable to play Pennant. Some points to remember: Once on the mat look at your skip to see what shot she wants you to play. Don't decide yourself and don't disagree with her choice. Remember she is at the head and can see things you may not be able to. Stay on the mat and watch where your bowl finishes so you can correct any error. Please don't just play your shots and then sit down and chat. You should be paying attention to the bowls being played and how the head is developing. It promotes good team spirit to be on the green to pass the bowl to the next player in your team. Some players prefer to pick up their bowl themselves so it's better to ask first. Of course if the player has a bowling arm this doesn't apply. Please make sure all your uniform has the Bowls Australia logo. Before the start of Pennant, replace the stickers unless they are in perfect condition. They will be inspected by the home Club umpire prior to commencement of the first game. You will have to replace them on the spot and can't play till you do if they are not perfect. If any member has a concern or complaint please address them to the selectors so they can be discussed and hopefully resolved. Discussing grievances with other members will not solve any problem. There are some rules newer members may not know about: MOBILE PHONES must be switched off during Pennant and above. If any player is expecting an urgent call they should inform the umpire of the day. BOWLING ARMS Players who start their game with a bowling arm must use it for the entire game. They may roll the jack without the arm if they choose to. We wish all Pennant players good bowling and hope you all enjoy the season. It would be great to win more flags! Remember, to be a successful player you must have commitment to your team and Club.
