6 BOWLER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS What is the JA Bowl-A-Thon? The JA Bowl-A-Thon is Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas largest fundraiser. Companies from all over the Houston area participate by raising funds for our mission. Teams of six bowlers raise $200 per bowler by asking their friends, co-workers, and family for donations. On a date selected by the company coordinator, everyone gathers to bowl and celebrate their fundraising accomplishments. The Junior Achievement staff keeps the atmosphere fun and energetic, gives out prizes, and takes care of all the logistics. Do I have to be a good bowler? Absolutely not! It s not just bowling; it s a party with a purpose! At the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon, people of all bowling skills come together in celebration of their fundraising efforts. We give each bowler automatic strikes on the 3rd, 6th and 9th frames so you are guaranteed 30 points for each game! Where do my donations go? Your donations allow Junior Achievement to provide educational programs at no direct cost to the schools and students we serve. These programs teach students the importance of financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Our goal this year is to reach 315,000 students. Can my friends and family bowl? Yes, teams can consist of friends, family, co-workers, clients or anyone who wants to bowl and raise money for JA! This is an adult event, but children may attend if accompanied and supervised by an adult. Please check with your company coordinator for any parameters on attendance. I m pretty busy. 10 FUNDRAISING IDEAS 5 STAR ENDORSEMENT From your CEO, JA Board member, Officer, etc. (e.g., a letter or memo to department heads and/or employees). Secure top management support! VENDOR CAMPAIGN Many companies have vendors and customers with whom they do a lot of business. These folks love your business and would be happy to support your efforts in the Bowl-A-Thon. All you have to do is ask. Many vendors will offer larger contributions and enable you to reach your goal. (We even have a template you can use.) CASUAL DAYS Create several casual days or jeans day for all employees with a fee of $10-$20 to participate. We can even provide We love JA stickers. SELL FRONT ROW PARKING to the highest bidder! How many of us would love to have that prime reserved parking spot close to the entrance at work that usually has the CEO s name on it? Wouldn t it be great to sell off that spot for a week with the proceeds benefiting Junior Achievement? MATCHING GIFTS Many companies will match employee pledges. REGISTRATION FEE PAID BY COMPANY Many companies will pay the $20-$45 per bowler registration. INCENTIVES Check with your company to see if you can work out an incentive arrangement. For example, for each $200 collected, offer a half day off. NEWSLETTERS Advertise Bowl-A-Thon event in your company newsletter or on your company s intranet. AWARDS Provide incentives such as gift certificates for costume contest, high game, low game, best dressed, worst dressed! Encourage friendly competition between groups, departments, locations, etc. BOWL-A-THON POSTERS AND BROCHURES Use as paycheck inserts and/or hang as a poster around the office. SILENT AUCTION Collect items and hold an auction with all proceeds benefiting JA. GRAB BAGS Assemble grab bags containing items of varying values and sell raffle tickets at your Bowl-A-Thon to win a grab bag. Some could be worth $10, some could be worth $50, it s all up to the draw! CAR WASH Get out and wash cars one afternoon for donations. Maybe your team can compete with another team and the losing team can wash the winners cars. Also try window washing at drive-thrus or at the entrance and exit to your company s parking lot. GARAGE SALE Hold an office-wide garage sale. A Desk Sale or Cubicle Sale is also a good idea! Wii BOWLING TOURNAMENT Set up a television and a Wii in a central location in your office. Charge an entry fee for each contestant that will benefit JA and log their scores. The top scoring bowler at the end of the day or week receives a prize or just post their photo so that they can have full bragging rights! You can even hold a tournament for top scoring bowlers and charge $1 for spectator tickets. PENNY WARS Every penny counts. Place penny jars throughout the company with interdepartmental challenges. Pennies are all positive, silver coins and dollars are all negative. Your department should place as many pennies in your jar as possible and as many silver coins and dollars in your competitors jars as possible. The department with the most money (minus negative-valued dollars and silver coins) at the end of the given time wins! PANCAKE BREAKFAST An annual pancake breakfast is a tried and true tradition. The festivities include the much anticipated pancake eating contest. 9

11 FUNDRAISING IDEAS (CONTINUED) WHO S THE BABY CONTEST Ask co-workers to bring in their baby pictures. Each week, feature a new group on a centrally located bulletin board. Co-workers pay $2 for each guess. PUTTING GREEN CONTEST Set up a putting green in your lobby and charge a fee for employees and/or customers to putt for prizes or against an executive. DARE CHALLENGE Employees can challenge each other to do or wear certain things around the office. A dare costs $10 to the person challenging a colleague and the colleague can opt out of the dare for an additional $10. Dares can include wearing a disliked sport team s jersey, greeting everyone at the door as they arrive at the office, pushing their desk chair around the office all day, assigning a manager a task, ending every conversation with and please support the JA Bowl-A-Thon. All dares can be performed in one fun day at the office. Personalize the dares for your office! All proceeds benefit JA. LUNCHES WITH THE CEO Many of us don t normally sit down for a meal with the CEO or President of your company. What a great opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the bowlers and their fundraising success. For example, your CEO/President could offer lunch with him or her for any employee team reaching a goal of $1,200. JAIL You can build a jail in your lobby and employees pay to have their managers and supervisors placed in jail. Each manager has a price level and employees collect money to place their boss in jail for a day. New rule no phones, laptops, ipods, Blackberries, inside the cell! The bosses can be made to paint pictures during their incarceration or any other silly duty during their time in jail. CHILI COOK-OFF As one of your internal fundraisers, you can have a chili cook-off. Contestants enter their best ware and sell bowls and cups of chili to fellow employees. The proceeds benefit Junior Achievement. Breath mints cost extra. This can be accomplished with any type of food. JA WISHING WELL Set up a child s swimming pool in your company lobby. Customers are encouraged to contribute their coins to make a big change in the life of a child. PIE IN THE FACE For a fundraising incentive, let the top fundraising bowler pie your senior leadership in the face or even sell tickets to employees and have a drawing awarding the chance to a lucky winner! GO HOME EARLY/GET A DAY OFF The boss collects $25 at the front door from everyone who wants to leave work early, or, for any bowler who raises $250 or more, the boss will grant you one paid day of vacation. This is a great way to raise the average amount that bowlers raise. TAX DEDUCTION Remind donors their donation is fully tax deductible. TV OR ELEVATOR MONITORS Advertise in unique places. YOU HAVE BEEN GREENED Anonymously decorate an unsuspecting senior management office from top to bottom with JA green. Then leave a ransom note that the décor can be removed and relocated to another office of their choice for a $25 fee. PUBLICIZE YOUR BOWL-A-THON GOALS Remember to set it high! CELEBRATE THOSE WHO HAVE MET FUNDRIASING GOALS Hang it in a visible space for everyone to see. 10
