Introduction Welcome to Youlden Parkville Cricket Club. This information pack will guide you as you begin a long and memorable relationship with cricket in your local community. Established in 1875, we have a strong community focus and encourage inclusiveness and participation by players at all levels of talent. YPCC s five senior teams (16 years and over) play in the Mercantile Cricket Association. We proudly run an extensive junior program for boys and girls aged between 5 and 15 years old. Competition junior teams (under10s under 16s) play in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. We have a rich history. The Club's unusual name is derived from Harry Youlden, our founding father and Kensington bookmaker, who established Youlden Kensington Cricket Club in Parkville Cricket Club was created in 1875 at a meeting held at Naughtons Hotel on Royal Parade. Youlden Kensington and Parkville Cricket Club merged in 1972 to create Youlden Parkville Cricket Club. Our club is proud that we have male and female cricketers from our founding parent clubs who played for Victorian and Australian cricket teams. We hope you have a great season at Youlden Parkville Cricket Club. For any questions that are not answered by this pack, please check out our website which has lots of useful information or contact the Junior Coordinator, Sophie Newing: sophie.newing@gmail.com or Teams We have 6 different programs open to boys and girls. 5 Under 10s (8 to 10 years) This is a great introduction to real cricket matches for boys and girls aged 8 to 10 years of age. Under 10s cricket plays matches under modified North West Metropolitan Cricket Association (NWMCA) rules. Players wear pads, gloves and helmets but use semihard balls and bat in pairs for two overs. If they are dismissed they don t actually go out, but just change ends. Everyone bowls, and gets a go at wicketkeeping. Under 10s have training on Wednesday evenings and play games on Friday evenings. Under 12s, Under 14s & Under 16s Competition Cricket Teams are open to boys and girls. Allowance may be made for girls older than the official cut off. These teams play in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. Games are played on Saturday mornings (except for one Under 14 team) using the usual rules of cricket in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association ( There is a structured transition program to support players moving from U16 into senior teams. On match days, players must arrive at the ground at least 20 minutes before the start of the game to allow adequate time for warming up, talking to the manager, hitting up etc. When not batting, bowling, fielding or practising, players are required to sit as a team, and encourage the players on the field. After each match the acting captain must provide a Captain s Report on the match which will be added to the manager s match report and posted on the club website. Please let the team manager know ASAP if a player will be absent from training or a match so alternative arrangements can be made to cover the absence. It is expected that players will be available to play every match and will do their upmost to fullfil this expectation cricket is a team sport and requires commitment to the team. If parents are unable to transport players to training and games, they should talk to their team manager who can find out parents to help out. Revised YPCC Welcome Pack doc Page 8 of 14

YPCC s Junior Coach, Wayne Schultz in coaching action All parents - no matter what level of cricket experience - can complete a free online introduction to cricket coaching course prepared by Cricket Australia. ( It s a lot of fun and only takes an hour. All junior teams require a voluntary parent manager. It is not essential to have a comprehensive understanding of cricket and the club greatly appreciates early offers to help manage teams. Main tasks: Keep an up-to-date record of player and parent contact details parents with match information Maintain a roster of parent tasks Decide on batting/bowling order Help set up the field (home matches) Help with field inspections (home matches) Bring YPCC kit including medical kit to match Work with team captain on match strategy Provide basic first aid Revised YPCC Welcome Pack doc Page 10 of 14

Supervise player and parent behaviour Report to the club president any behaviour contrary to club rules Ensure a Match Report is provided to the club in a timely manner (not required for Under 10s) Ensure scores are recorded on the MyCricket website Pay the match umpire (the club will reimburse any umpires fees) for Under 12 matches and above. Parents Parents play an integral role in junior cricket; their involvement is crucial to the successful running of the club. This includes volunteering as team managers, helping out at training and matches, assisting players with their equipment, umpiring, helping with BBQs and packing away equipment. On match days there are many essential jobs that ensure games are played quickly and smoothly. These will be allocated to parents on a roster system. Task for parents: Scoring 1 Square-leg umpire 2 Bringing snacks for players Help set up the field (home matches) Help with field inspections (home matches) Throwing balls to batsmen to help get their eye in Help clean up after match The roster will be distributed to parents at the start of the season (at the discretion of the team manager). 1 Don t panic! We ll be running How to Score nights to teach parents the art of cricket score-keeping. 2 Don t panic! There is usually at least a couple of parents with a basic understanding of the rules parents who are not confident with the rules will not be allocated this role Revised YPCC Welcome Pack doc Page 11 of 14

Photography YPCC sometimes takes photos of players and games for the purpose of sharing them on the website, Facebook and for marketing. Players will never be identified. YPCC abides by the Australian Sports Commission guidelines for sports clubs data/assets/pdf_file/0009/378738/as C_Images2007.pdf If you do not wish your child to be photographed whilst training or at games, please inform your team manager or the Junior Coordinator or the Club President in writing. Code Of Behaviour For Junior Cricket, YPCC has existed since We have played on the Ryder Oval in Parkville since Today s players like those who have gone before them play to enjoy the friendship created by the game and bring success to our club. The club has a code of behaviour, based on Cricket Australia's Junior Cricketing Policy, that is expected of all players and officials. All parents, officials and players of YPCC agree to honour this code of behaviour. Good sportsmanship is the most important element of cricket. These codes help to ensure parents, officials and players involved in junior cricket can enjoy training, coaching and games. They also support the club s aim to give all young people a fair go regardless of their gender, ability and cultural background. Players Code Of Behaviour Respect the rights, dignity and worth of your team mates and opponents regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. Play by the Rules. 1. Never argue with an umpire, team mate or opposition player. 2. If you are upset about something that happened at training or in a game talk about your worries to your team manager. 3. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, sledging other players, making unnecessary comments to opponents, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted behaviours in cricket. 4. Work equally hard for yourself and your team mates. Your team s performance will benefit and so will you. Revised YPCC Welcome Pack doc Page 12 of 14

5. Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition. 6. Treat all participants in cricket as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor. 7. Cooperate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition. 8. Assist in the preparation and packing up of training and game equipment. Coaches & Team Managers Code Of Behaviour Remember that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only part of the fun. 1. Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake. 2. Be reasonable in your demands on each player s time, energy and enthusiasm. 3. Know and operate within the rules and spirit of cricket and teach your players to do the same. 4. Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. 5. Avoid overplaying the talented players. All young players need and deserve equal time, attention and opportunities. 6. Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players. 7. Display control and respect to all those involved in cricket. This includes opponents, coaches, umpires, administrators, parents and spectators. Encourage your players to do the same. 8. Show concern and caution toward sick and injured players. 9. Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest cricket coaching practices and principles of growth and development of young people. 10. Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player s skill development. 11. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. 12. If asked to officiate as an umpire, scorer or other match official, you should respect the spirit of the game and be consistent, courteous and impartial in all your decision making. Parents Code Of Behaviour 1. Do not force an unwilling child to participate in cricket. 2. Remember, children are involved in cricket for their enjoyment, not yours. 3. Encourage your child to play by the rules. 4. Focus on the child s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing. Revised YPCC Welcome Pack doc Page 13 of 14

5. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. 6. Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skillful plays by all participants. 7.
