INTRODUCTION For more than 20 years, Cricket Australia and State and Territory Cricket Associations have delivered entry-level cricket programs that enable children to learn cricket skills in a fun, friendly and enjoyable environment. The challenge for clubs is to maximise the number of participants that progress from the introductory MILO in2cricket skills-based program to competitive junior cricket competitions. MILO T20 Blast has been developed to ensure junior cricketers can progress with confidence from MILO in2cricket to competitive club cricket competitions and play an appropriate format of cricket that will inspire them to continue as a player or a fan. MILO T20 Blast is a graduate competition and bridges the gap between MILO in2cricket participants and junior club cricket. THE AIM OF MILO T20 BLAST IS TO: INTRODUCE JUNIOR CRICKETERS TO COMPETITION CONTINUE TO DEVELOP SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES LEARNT IN MILO in2cricket MAXIMISE PARTICIPATION FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS INCREASE KIDS PASSION FOR CRICKET ENSURE KIDS THAT GRADUATE FROM THE PROGRAM ARE READY FOR JUNIOR CLUB CRICKET 2 THE EXPERIENCE MILO T20 Blast is a fun, fast-paced modified cricket format that encapsulates the excitement of the KFC T20 Big Bash League. It is the initial step to playing real, competitive cricket. The minute game promotes an inclusive, safe, equal participation opportunity for every junior. A typical MILO T20 Blast program sees multiple games playing simultaneously. This handbook gives examples of 64 children playing games at one time. Depending on the size of the venue, there could be even more players further generating an exciting and vibrant atmosphere, bolstered by a community based crowd of friends, parents and siblings. A large crowd positioned close to the game promotes positive interaction and encouragement, adding to the atmosphere. In a perfect environment, each centre provides high-energy music to accompany the action. Short boundaries inspire countless fours and sixes which will have the juniors screaming for more as MILO T20 Blast creates a unique sporting atmosphere for the kids. It is their time to shine! The action packed program is facilitated by accredited providers, ensuring the sessions run smoothly. The providers are responsible for the organisation, administration, set-up, game fixtures, drive the Skills Zone activities, times, recording of statistics and the clean-up. The MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator generally requires assistance from at least one other support role on match day. The Skills Zone Deliverer is trusted in running the coaching side of the program, meanwhile parental involvement is strongly encouraged both in the Skills Zone and to act as team managers. Team managers play an important role of scoring and managing their team. The MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator and Skills Zone Deliverer ensure each session is not just a game, but an awesome sporting event! MILO T20 Blast delivers in a familiar environment and a safe format, regardless of which centre you attend. All of the skills required to participate in cricket are entrenched in an explosive, action packed experience. 3

MILO T20 BLAST TRANSITIONING KIDS INTO JUNIOR CRICKET MILO T20 Blast plays an important role in bridging the gap between MILO in2cricket and the next level of junior cricket. Below are some of the key differences between MILO T20 Blast and junior cricket. MILO T20 Blast provides a great opportunity for kids and parents to be introduced to real games of cricket in a fast, active and fun format, whilst being a stepping stone for junior cricket. MILO T20 BLAST Colourful BBL themed uniforms Ability based criteria 75 to 90 minute complete game experience Same product regardless of the place of play Soft rubber cricket ball 6-8 players per team No additional protective equipment required 10 metre safety zone for fielders Bowler bowls at the same end over games, depending on numbers Everyone bowls and everyone bats Easy online sign on and transactions Designed to encourage and promote inclusion Standard game/program dimensions and realistic boundaries for players to hit Skills taught by Skills Zone deliverer Set-up and pack all completed by the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator and Skills Zone Deliverer Fixtures played at central venues Standard national rules 4 Similar rules for both outdoor and indoor formats Has all the excitement of the Big Bash League Multiple games per oval at the one location All equipment is supplied by the centre for the players 5

PROGRAM COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES As a MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator you will be responsible for the administration, set up, coordination and delivery of the program in a designated region. SET UP Organise fixture prior to each week. This can be done using the MyCricket website. Collate team managers contact details to send through newsletters and communications. Prior to leaving, make sure all kids are collected by a parent and not left unattended at the end of the night. 7

TEAM MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES Each team that is entered into a MILO T20 Blast centre requires a team manager to help out with support roles. In most cases whether this is an association, club or community centre we ask that Mum s, Dad s, older siblings or even older clubs representatives, volunteer their time to support their child or club. This is a role that can be shared between multiple volunteers per team or just carried out by one person. Responsibilities of the Team Manager: PRIOR TO THE FIRST NIGHT Download the MILO T20 BLAST App from the App Store if you have an iphone/ipad. The App has scorecards, rules along with Skills Zone information. Be aware of the rules prior to the first session. The rules can be seen via the MILO T20 BLAST App and on the back of the score cards. Ensure your team members have registered and received their participant packs. MATCH DAY Arrive at the ground 15 minutes prior to the start time and organize your team. Collect the scorecard prior to the commencement of play from the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator or alternatively, the scorecard can be set up on your MILO T20 BLAST App. Check in with the Centre MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator so they know your team is present and ready to play. Run games with an energetic and fast paced nature encouraging kids at all times, ensuring all children are actively engaged. 8 BATTING Team Manager will ensure teams are grouped into batting pairs. Make sure both you and your team know the batting order. Team Manager to direct the remaining 4+ children to the Skills Zone area. Encourage a smooth transition in and out of the Skills Zone to maintain the momentum of the game. FIELDING The Team Manager can umpire and score from the bowlers end whilst their team fields or engage with other parents/volunteers to help assist you. While umpiring the Team Manager organises the team into fielding positions with a bowler, keeper and three fielders spread evenly on both sides of the wicket. At the end of each over, the Team Manager rotates the fielding positions in a clockwise direction enabling all participants to get an even go in each position. POST-MATCH Encourage the participants to grab their fields equipment and bring it over to the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator s area. Ensure all the participants are collected by their parents/guardians. Score sheet handed to the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator or ed through the MILO T20 Blast App. HAVE FUN FROM THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE! 9

MILO T20 BLAST FORMAT Players 6 to 8 per side Game length - 12 to 16 overs per team/innings regardless of how many wickets are lost. Game/Session time 75 to 90 minutes. Pitch length 14 metres. MILO T20 B L A ST PROGR AM N O I T A M R I N FO 10 Pitch type All matches and the Skills Zone take place on the grass outfield. Ground size boundaries are to be set up at a 30 metre radius from the pitch with the area behind the wicketkeeper reduced to allow more space and encourage straighter hitting to the open spaces. Soft rubber cricket ball. Batting players bat in pairs for 4 overs regardless of whether they get dismissed in that period. Bowling - Players bowl two overs each, bowled from the same end. Fielding - No fielder is allowed within 10 metres of the bat until after the ball is hit. This excludes the wicketkeeper and slips. A coin/bat toss determines which team bats first. Participants waiting to bat are involved in the Skills Zone where they learn vital skills and nuances of cricket. These skills activities have been designed to address critical game development requirements to ensure the participants can seamlessly enter into junior cricket. 11

GROUND AND EQUIPMENT 1. MILO T20 Blast is played on grass outfields. 2. Boundaries are to be set up at a 30 metre radius from the pitch with the area behind the wicketkeeper reduced to allow more space and encourage straighter hitting to the open spaces. 3. If there is a need to tailor playing conditions (e.g. ground dimensions) for a specific program/venue, this will be addressed by the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator at the initial briefing. 4. The standard pitch is length to 14 metres stump-to-stump. 5. Branded MILO T20 Blast bats are used, supplied in the MILO T20 Blast centre equipment pack. 6. Protective gear is not required when batting. HELPING THINGS RUN SMOOTHLY Balls will be given to each team to use for the duration of the day. Team Managers are responsible for returning the ball to the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator at the end of the day. Scoresheets are to be returned to the centre MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator by the team manager or ed through if you are using the MILO T20 Blast App. Please return all equipment to the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator after the final games are completed. Players are asked to pick up all rubbish throughout the day

GROUND & WEATHER CONDITIONS HEAT SCHEDULE Where possible, outdoor MILO T20 Blast sessions should be scheduled outside the hours of 11am and 3pm. WET WEATHER Ground and weather conditions can have a significant impact on the safety and enjoyment of the MILO T20 Blast program. Appropriate care should be taken to avoid any foul weather-related injuries. MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinators should exercise a conservative approach to continuing play in the rain, where lightning is present or where the field conditions have reached a point where they could pose danger to participants. SHADE The use of natural shade should be maximized with the Skills Zone where possible, conducted in the shade to provide kids some shade whilst they aren t out in the field of play. 14 It is recommended that MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinators apply common sense guidelines to climatic conditions regarding excessive heat. Players health must always be considered in the scheduling of the program. Sports Medicine Australia recommends that for children and adolescents, activities should be postponed or cancelled if the temperature reaches a level designated by the local or state association. Action should be taken promptly by umpires and officials to cease play under any conditions that may be dangerous to the players and officials. CLOTHING AND SUNSCREEN A policy of no hat, no play should be implemented ensuring all players and officials must be wearing a hat before participating. SPF 30 + or higher sunscreen should be promoted and available at all MILO T20 Blast sessions. Sunscreen should be applied. 15 minutes prior to the game and whilst playing in peak UV periods, participants, volunteers and supporters should be encouraged to frequently re-apply sunscreen to exposed body parts. The use of sunglasses is encouraged to help provide protection from sun damage to the eyes. 15

RULES A game is typically played with two teams of eight players per team. There can be some flexibility with 6-8 players per side at the discretion of the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator to accommodate varying numbers. Ideally it s best that only eight individuals bat & bowl with a maximum of eight fielders at one time to allow matches to finish on time. A toss of a coin/bat will determine which team bats first. BATTING Plastic and wooden bats can be used. Batters do not need to wear pads or gloves. Batting pairs bat for four overs. Players remain batting irrespective of the number of times they are given out. Batters swap ends at the end of each over and when dismissed (except in the event of a run out). If the batter facing fails to hit any two consecutive balls in one over, they hit off the tee after the second delivery and must run. This allows both batters an opportunity to score runs. If a batter is out, the bowling team receives five bonus runs per wicket. Please note that runs are not deducted they are added to the bowling team s final total. Thus, the only penalty for being given out is that the batters swap ends. Batters can be given out in the following ways: bowled, caught, run out, stumped and hit wicket. Players are given out at the discretion of the umpire. The next batting pair must be ready to bat immediately following the previous pair s innings

BOWLING A ll eight players must bowl and wicketkeep for two overs. All players rotate around the field in a circular formation to ensure they field in every position during a game. B owlers are limited to a short run up. This ensures a fast paced game with plenty of action and minimal down time. All overs are bowled from the same end. Batters swap ends after each over. 18 DOUBLE ZONE Umpires are asked to encourage bowling with a straight arm in the spirit of the rules. The Double Zone is the area behind the bowler s end stumps. See the ground setup diagram on page 26 for further detail. There is a maximum of six deliveries in each over. No balls and wides are not rebowled. The Double Zone should be marked with different coloured markers. A ny overarm delivery that bounces more than once or rolls along the ground shall be deemed a fair delivery (unless the bowler is deliberately rolling it along the ground to gain advantage). The umpire may decide that deliveries should be re-bowled if they are considered unfair. I f the ball is hit into the Double Zone then all runs are doubled e.g. 1 = 2, 3 = 6. O nly runs hit into the Double Zone are counted as double runs. Over throws do not count. N o more than two players can field in the Double Zone at the time of delivery. 19

NO BALLS & WIDES There are four types of deliveries that classify as a no ball or wide. A no ball is one that: i) bounces over the batter s head in their batting stance. ii) reaches the batter above waist height (above the bottom rib) on the full. iii) sees the bowler overstep the crease at delivery. A wide is one that: iv) Passes outside the wide markers at the batter s end. I f a no ball is bowled, whether the batter hits it or not, the batting team receives two runs and a free hit off the tee. The only way a batter can be out off a free hit is run out. I f a batter scores off a no ball, they will still receive an additional two runs. In addition, the batter on strike after the runs are completed will receive a free hit off the tee. For further detail see the free hit rule on page 21. FREE HIT RULE If a no ball or wide is bowled whether the batter hits it or not, the batting team receives two runs and a free hit from the tee. W hen the tee is used, the batter must hit off the tee forward of the batting end stumps. Batters may not run if the ball is hit behind the batter s stumps off the tee. A missed swing at the ball on the tee counts as the free hit. I n the case of a free hit off the tee, the fielding team must stay in the positions they were in at the moment the original delivery was made until the ball is hit off the tee. The batter can only be out run out from a free hit. Standard fielding rules apply for all free hits. I f a batter scores off a no ball (free hit) the batter on strike still receives a free hit (but only one swing). I n the case of the ball passing outside the markers at the batter s end (wide) and beating the wicketkeeper the batters receive two runs plus what they run. The ball is then returned to the tee for a free hit and the number of runs scored from that hit is added to what has already been scored. e.g. two (wide) + what is run + score from the free hit

SKILLS ZONE FAQS The MILO T20 Blast experience is highlighted by all participants being actively involved for the maximum amount of time, during the program. MILO T20 Blast offers participants an equal opportunity to perform all the skills of cricket whilst playing the game. Q. HOW MANY TEAMS CAN MY CLUB ENTER? Clubs can enter as many teams as they like, however depending on interest levels and ground capacity there may be a need to limit numbers. Individuals can also enter a team with friends. While waiting to bat, participants are engaged in activities. These games allow for an ability based progression of cricket skills. The skills are given relevance in the context of game sense. Q. CAN I ENTER A MIXED BOYS AND GIRLS TEAM? This format is suitable for both girls and boys and we certainly encourage mixed teams at this ability level where necessary. The weekly Skills Zone session plan has been developed to include a variety of skills in a format encouraging light competition. As kids become attached to cricket through the experience, the skill acquisition and development becomes integral for retaining participants in the cricket pathway. This is vital, not just for future players, but also for creating many more educated fans for life. Cricket Australia has developed a weekly set of Skills Zone activities that the Skills Zone Deliverer is encouraged to drive. These can be found on the MILO T20 Blast App and online accreditation course. Q. WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES OUR CLUB NEED TO PROVIDE? Each centre and MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator will provide all necessary equipment thus teams/clubs don t need to provide any equipment. Q. CAN PLAYERS USE THEIR OWN WOODEN BATS? Yes. All equipment will be provided, however participants may choose to use their own bat. Please ensure that all external equipment is clearly named. Q. WHAT AGE DO THE PLAYERS HAVE TO BE? The recommended age for MILO T20 Blast is However the program is an ability based program. Q. WHO SCORES AND UMPIRES AT THE CENTRES? Each club/team requires a volunteer to undertake on match days the team management duties as per the job description. This would involve umpiring and scoring for your teams fielding innings. Ideally it would be great to encourage clubs/teams to rotate volunteer assistance to help share the responsibilities. Q. WHERE WILL MILO T20 BLAST CENTRES BE RUN? MILO T20 Blast centres will be hosted primarily by associations or clubs, but privately run independent centres may also exist. Private centres will typically be run by independent private providers and act as feeder centres for clubs and association cricket. Some centres may also be run in schools

FAQS (CONT) Q. WHO CAN BE A MILO T20 BLAST PROGRAM COORDINATOR OR SKILLS ZONE DELIVERER? States and Territories are ultimately responsible to help recruit suitable accredited facilitators and are looking for people that have experience working with large groups of kids and running events. Q. WHAT DOES THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS INVOLVE? A MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator is required to complete the MILO T20 Blast online accreditation course. In addition to this, a practical training session will be offered by each State or Territory Association to the MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator and Skills Zone Deliverer. This may be at a centralised training session or a State or Territory staff member will visit your centre where possible to guide you through the process. Q. HOW LONG IS A MILO T20 BLAST SEASON? Typically a season will run for eight sessions/weeks, however there is some flexibility for association driven programs. Q. HOW DO PARTICIPANTS REGISTER FOR MILO T20 BLAST? Centres may align to clubs, but they may also have no club alignment (i.e. a girls-only centre) where participants come to one place, are put into teams, and are registered to the centre. Q. WHERE DO WE GET THE EXTRA VOLUNTEERS? MILO T20 Blast centres are fully coordinated by accredited facilitators who coordinate the full process: registration, set up of grounds, collation of results and clean-up of the venue. All programs encourage plenty of parental / volunteer engagement. This is necessary to help umpire / score and team manage, ensuring the kids are having the best possible experience. To learn about a variety of ways to get greater volunteer support please refer to the Coordinator accreditation course or phone the MILO T20 Blast Helpdesk Q. WHERE IS MILO T20 BLAST PLAYED? MILO T20 Blast can be played in any suitable open space but usually it would be played on grass outfields. The selected host venue can be the same for the entire program or it can rotated around a number of nearby suitable venues. There is no one specific model. Due to wash outs, or unforeseen circumstances, back up facilities may be used where available. Venues such as indoor sports centres, basketball courts, tennis courts and beaches are just an example of some. Q. HOW IMPORTANT IS WINNING? MILO T20 Blast is a participation based program, ensuring that everyone is involved and having fun is the most important aspect. Those involved should remember this objective when running the program. Q. WHAT HAPPENS IF A SESSION IS AFFECTED BY RAIN? While it is always preferable to make up sessions not completed due to inclement weather, this is not always possible and your MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator will deal with these circumstances on a case by case basis. Q. AS A PARENT WHAT CAN I DO TO GET INVOLVED IN THE MILO T20 BLAST EXPERIENCE? Parents are encouraged to get involved in the program wherever possible. Your MILO T20 Blast Program Coordinator will always be looking for assistance with umpiring, scoring and managing games at a MILO T20 Blast centre. Wides or no balls should be represented on the score sheet by a circle This circle represents the two runs received for a wide or no ball. Mark the circle when the wide or no ball is bowled and then enter the number of runs made by the batter within the circle. In some instances this will be a combination of runs made off the original ball and of runs made from the free hit. For example, Joan is the batter on strike when a no ball is bowled. She manages to hit 2 runs off the no ball and then hits another 2 off the tee. Her score is represented as 4. When tallying the number of runs Joan made, this is counted as 6: 4 runs + a circle (which counts for 2). 6. Mark any balls from which there is no score with a dot. 7.
