Wednesday 11 th May, 2015 U11A Rounders v Rossall On Wednesday, we travelled to Rossall and were lucky enough to have bright sunshine for our rounders match. Sedbergh started the batting off in the 1 st innings but the girls were slow to get going and Rossall s tight fielding meant that we were only able to score 3 rounders. The girls knew they had to field effectively and despite some good batters from Rossall, Alice Dunning caught 2 players out, Charlotte Fletcher bagged another catch and there were a number of stumpings out at 2 nd and 4 th. We managed to work as a team and keep the opposition s score down to 3 rounders. In the second innings, Sedbergh s batting was a little more consistent and Alice, Charlotte and Jadyn Stewart found some of the gaps in their fielding, helping us secure 3 ½ rounders in the 2 nd innings. Rossall came back in to bat, needing 4 rounders to win. Sedbergh s fielding was not as secure as it was in the 1 st innings and overthrows meant that Rossall capitalised on our mistakes. Sedbergh played well and their fielding in the 1 st innings was testament to their ability. Unfortunately, it wasn t quite enough and Rossall took the game 8-6 ½. Result: Loss M.I.C: Miss M Jarrett U11B Rounders v Rossall The U11Bs took to the field after having watched the A team play. We started the innings batting and scored well, with Erica Overend and Lucie West reading the field and taking advantage of missthrows from Rossall. In the field Scarlett Holden played really well as backstop, making sure that the ball got back to the bowler safely. Grace Gale played well at 2 nd post ensuring that ½ rounders were kept to a minimum. The score at half time was Sebergh 5 ½ - Rossall 2 ½. We didn t score quite so well in the second innings, but Rowan Piper and Grace Gale helped to increase our lead. Fielding for the 2 nd time, Sedbergh needed to keep the opposition s score as low as possible. The girls worked well as a team, moving to back players up on their posts. A great win from the B team. Result: Victory U9 Rounders v Rossall The Under 9 girls were in fine form against Rossall School on Wednesday afternoon. They batted with confidence and put the opposition under considerable pressure. Millie Gunning scored 4.5 rounders single-handedly and Olivia Kay-Shuttleworth, Jonquil Overend, Eve Robinson as well as Polina Whitehead, managed to secure individual full rounders. The most impressive aspect of the

team s performance, however, was their fielding. It was tight and accurate as well as skilful and effective. A super team performance culminated in a highly rewarding win. Result: Victory Players of the Match: Millie Gunning and Olivia Kay-Shuttleworth M.I.C: Miss M Jarrett

Thursday 7 th May, st V11 Girls Tennis v Austin Friars in Cumbria Cup On Thursday afternoon, the Year 8 girls tennis team which included Lottie Burns, Katie Gill, Carenza Pinn and Sonya Kanevskiy travelled up to Carlisle to play Austin Friars. Fortunately, it ended up being a lovely sunny evening with no wind so it was perfect conditions for tennis. We played on the astro which our girls are not used to playing on so it was imperative that they reacted quickly to balls and got them swiftly, as the ball does not bounce well on the astro turf. We won 3 out of the 4 singles matches convincingly, so got off to a good start. Lottie played superbly against an old rival in a game with some fantastic rallies. The doubles matches posed more of a challenge with them being tight matches. Both doubles matches could have gone either way but our girls dug deep and used their tactics wisely to ensure two wins. Result: 10 2 Victory M.I.C: Mrs F Barker

Saturday 2 nd May, 2015 U11A Rounders v Mowden The cold and rain did not dampen the spirits of the U11 A team as they faced Mowden on Saturday. Having lost the toss they were put in to bat and it was most encouraging to see the improvement in their batting from their last match as the team managed to score 8 rounders against a team who fielded well. Games sessions on Thursday and Friday had focused on tight fielding and support play and the improvement as they fielded was very evident as they managed to keep the Mowden score to 5.5. The second innings brought the Sedbergh score to 16 and as the team entered to field for the second time there was a real sense of purpose. The Mowden girls batting became more consistent and there were a few errors in decision making, which allowed the girls to score full rounders rather than halves, but generally the team fielded well. The final score was and it has to be said that on the day a draw was a good reflection of the game. The Y6 girls certainly led the way - Josephine Peart batted well in both innings, and Rosie Bishop was an excellent fielder at 2 nd post and batted well, Maddy Harrison was gaining confidence at backstop and took a great catch and Alice Dunning was a great fielder at 2 nd deep. Charlotte Fletcher was consistent as the bowler and gave very few rounders away and also added rounders to the score line. All the Y5 girls played well but it was perhaps Freya Cope who was the star on the day, scoring some excellent rounders and showing real potential. Cold weather apart, it was a pleasure to umpire the game. Well played girls! Result: Draw M.I.C: Mrs J Rollings U11B Rounders v Mowden Hall On Saturday, the U11 Rounders B team played against a strong side from Mowden Hall. The opposition put our team under considerable pressure with some powerful batting as well as some skilful fielding. Nevertheless, the girls tried hard to respond: Rowan Piper scored 3 impressive rounders and bowled accurately, Lucie West and Pippa North contributed well to the final total of 13.5 rounders and particular mention should also go to Millie Gunning for her excellent performance as Back Stop. The match highlighted a number of key areas on which the team needs to work although they tried hard and gave of their best. Player of the Match: Rowan Piper Result: Loss

1st Rounder s v Mowden Hall After a fantastic tactical training session the previous day, Sedbergh were using this fixture as a stepping stone towards Wednesday's JET cup. We went out to field first and worked the ball well preventing Mowden from scoring many times. As we went into bat we had 7 1/2 rounders to beat. With some well-placed hits the girls managed to score 8 1/2 rounders. In the 2nd innings our fielding was on point and Mowden struggled to score for the first 15 balls. Unfortunately we let it slide at times which allowed the opposition to gain some vital points. As we went in to bat for the final time we only needed 4 1/2 to win. We started well gaining 2 rounders in the first 6 balls. However Mowden kept their fielding incredibly tight and we lost by 1/2 a rounder. A great game with many improvements from the previous fixture. Result: Loss Player of the Match: Carenza Pinn M.I.C: Miss E Wallis

Wednesday 29 th April, 2015 U11A Rounders v St Mary s Hall On Wednesday the girls travelled to St. Mary s Hall for their second rounders match of the season. With a brief warm-up in the bitterly cold wind the girls were out to bat in the first innings. It was clear to see that SMH had had a much longer warm up and they were raring to go, with their bowler delivering fast, direct balls. Sedbergh hadn t quite got their eye in, and were struggling to make runs. The girls were making contact with the ball but were unable to hit the gaps in the field, only managing to score 2 ½ rounders in their 1 st innings. Our first innings of fielding was a costly one; with some silly fielding mistakes and over-throws. Their batters placed the ball in the gaps and despite our best efforts, SMH scored 7 rounders in their 1 st innings. Back in to bat, and the girls knew they had to go for it in order to catch up with the scoring. They were hitting with more confidence, but unfortunately their attempts were too often high balls which were easily caught by the opposition. At the end of both batting innings Sedbergh were on 5 ½ against SMH s 7. Knowing there were unable to win the game, the girls had to field and try to keep the score as low as possible. With a few changes of position, the girls looked more comfortable and their passing was slicker. Charlotte Fletcher and Freya Cope aided their cause with 2 good catches but it was not quite enough and SMH increased their lead scoring 7 rounders. A disappointing score but the game highlighted what the girls need to work on for their next fixture on Saturday. Result: Loss M.I.C: Miss M Jarrett U11B Rounders v St Mary s Hall The girls had their first rounders match on a cold and blustery day which did not help their fielding as cold hands dropped some catches but they tried their best to remain focused and to work together as a team. It was a close match throughout and could certainly have gone either way. As their understanding of the game improves so too will their decision making which will help them avoid giving away rounders. Grace Eddleston fielded really well as bowler, Millie Gunning played sensibly as backstop and Olivia Kay Shuttleworth batted well, scoring several rounders for the team. A good start girls the focus for our next game will be on backing each other up in the field and improving the accuracy of out throwing. Result: Loss M.I.C: Mrs J Rollings

1 st Team Rounder s v St Mary s Hall For the first rounder s fixture of the season the girls were met at SMH by some strong winds and chilly weather. After a brief warm up the girls went in to bat first, managing to score a large amount of half rounder s in the first 20 balls. As SMH tightened their fielding we struggled to read the game resulting in an all-out situation by the 28 th ball. However we went into the field strong taking a catch on the first ball. The girls continued to field well managing to get 4 more players out in 10 balls. However, SMH held on throughout the 30 balls gaining enough to make the score level at 7-7 after the first innings. As we went into the 2 nd innings SMH fielding was strong. Many players struggling to get past first base and others finding themselves out on their first balls. Unfortunately, again we couldn t manage to hold on and we were all-out for 26 balls. With only a 1 rounder lead the girls had to pull it out of the bag. They fielded well but with a few mistakes we allowed them to score loss. Result 10 8 Loss M.I.C: Miss E Wallis

Monday 27 th April, 2015 U13 Girls Team Tennis School v QES The U13 girls tennis team had their first match against QES and performed well. Captain Lottie Burns, the most experienced in the team, played with composure and won her singles comfortably at 6-2, whilst Carenza Pinn also had a strong game and won 6-1. Katie Gill had a real tousle and enjoyed some long rallies with her opponent but eventually lost 6-4 and Sonya Kanevskiy had an equally narrow defeat at 6-4. In the doubles the girls were slightly disappointed to lose both their matches to one break each which resulted in an 8-4 victory to QES, which does not convey the closeness of the teams. There was a lot to encourage, with plenty of good groundstrokes and once the girls become more confident and can approach the net to volley they will make real progress. The target for their next match will be to work on tactical awareness when playing doubles but overall an excellent effort. Well done girls a really positive start. Result: 8 4 Loss M.I.C: Mrs J Rollings

Saturday 25 th April, 2015 NSEA Inter Schools Equestrian EVENT AT Northcote Stud Sedbergh's Equestrian Team have had another highly successful weekend competing at the NSEA Inter Schools Event at Northcote Stud. Our Team is definitely making an impact against some other tough school teams who have some good riders and horses. Sedbergh qualified for the Nationals in Ocbober in three different classes which is superb. The talented Storm Straker from our Senior School rode three horses for Sedbergh and was placed 1st in three classes so will go to Nationals as an Individual as well as being part of the Team. Elizabeth Gale who is in Year 8 was a vital member of our winning team and came 3rd as an Individual in the 1 metre Show Jumping Class. The fearless Grace Gale made her debut for the school on her very fast pony PJ. Grace had a several great rounds and had the fastest time in the 70cm showjumping and would have won if she had not had one pole down. Laura Holley represented the school for the first time, riding strong on Village Magic. They had good day out despite Village Magic not liking some of the spooky fences. 1 metre NSEA Arena Eventing Qualifier Team Competition: 1st Sedbergh (Storm Straker, George Rigal, Elizabeth Gale) Individual Competition: 1st Storm Straker riding Versace. 2nd Storm Straker riding William 1 metre NSEA Show Jumping Qualifier: Team Competition: 1st Sedbergh (Storm Straker, George Rigal, Elizabeth Gale) Individual Competition: 3rd Elizabeth Gale. 4th Storm Straker riding Salisbury 90cm NSEA Eventing Qualifier: Team Competition: 4th Sedbergh (Storm Straker, George Rigal, Elizabeth Gale) Individual Competition: 1st Storm Straker riding Versace 90cm NSEA Show Jumping Qualifier: Team Competition: 1st Sedbergh (Storm Straker, George Rigal, Elizabeth Gale) Individual Competition: 1st Storm Straker riding Salisbury Eventing Classes - This required our team to ride a Show Jumping track followed by a rustic Cross County Track which posed some tricky questions to our riders. They had to get within the optimum time and they also got judged on their riding style and approach to some testing fences. Show Jumping Classes - They had to jump a set of Show Jumps with the second half against the clock. It was a long but successful day and thank you to our fantastic support team of parents. 10 Wednesday 22 nd April, 2015 U11 Rounders v Richmond House It was a beautifully sunny afternoon in Leeds and the girls arrived looking professional with a great warm up. We were first in to bat and Richmond House showed tight fielding from the start. The girls took a while to bed in resulting in half of the team getting out with a small score on the board. However once settled the remaining girls held it together managing to score 6 rounder s in the innings. We then fielded well keeping Richmond House s score line down. Unfortunately with a few small mistakes the girls gave away some vital half rounder s allowing Richmond house to take a 2 rounder lead. Into the second innings and Sedbergh knew how the opposition fielded. We used this to our advantage, at times allowing a few members to make it all the way home in one. Throughout the innings most of the team stayed in however Richmond kept their fielding tight which prevented us getting past first base on many occasions. We went into the field 5 rounders ahead. The girls showed great fielding from the start managing to get 5 of the 9 opposition out in the first 15 balls. With only 6 balls to go Sedbergh led by 1 rounder. Unfortunately our catching skills let us down and we fell apart in the last 4 balls giving Richmond the opportunity to score. The final score to Richmond House. For the first fixture of the season the girls showed some great promise and knowledge of tactical play. With some hard work in training I am sure this will be an exciting season for the U11 s.
