1 Head of Sport Mr. Gavin Webb Term 1 Week 2 Welcome to the new year Hello and welcome back to the 2016 school year. The sporting calendar is certainly full once again in term one with rowing and cricket already continuing their seasons in the last week of the summer holidays. The annual rowing camp was held on Lake Wendouree with many gruelling water, ergo and land sessions completed. Led by rowing co-ordinator Mr. Joyce and assisted by Ms. Parsons the rowing club certainly has a lot of enthusiasm and energy, which will hold all rowers and coaches in good stead for the Head of the Lake on Friday, February 26. Our first XI Cricketers competed in one day friendlies against St. Virgil s, Hobart and St. Kevin s, Toorak before taking on St. Patrick s, Launceston (100 over match) in the battle for the Br. Breach Cup. With rain interrupting two of the four days we were fortunate enough to come away with a one wicket win to regain the cup. Thanks must go to the families who were able to host a billet for the week. Thanks also to Mr. Corden and Mr Busscher for their organisation of the week. BAS Sport The majority of Ballarat Associated Schools (BAS) competition sports for term one commence in week three. Students need to ensure that they listen to the morning messages and attend meetings so that they are organised know where they need to be. Always communicate with your coaches if you are unavailable or for general inquiries. 3 require very specific clothing e.g. 1 st XI Cricketers require SPC Whites, SPC cricket shirt and SPC cricket cap. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Also remember to wear sunscreen at all times. Students Achievements Already we have had some sensational sporting performances outside of BAS and SPC by St. Patrick s Students. These include; Bailey Holloway Bailey is in close contention to qualify for the Victorian Mens Open Golf Championship. Bailey came third in a six way play off for the last two spots. Hopefully Bailey gets a late call up to the event. Adam Svaljek - Adam won back to back Junior Victorian Open Golf U/16 titles with a nett score of 70, which was played at Thirteenth Beach. A great effort by Adam. Jack Brown - Jack will be representing Victoria in the 2016 Australian Dragon Boating Championships. The competition will be held in Adelaide over Easter. It is the first time a Victorian junior team has entered. Good luck Jack. Final word I wish all students and coaches the best in Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St. Patrick s College is steeped in sporting tradition and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours. Please do not hesitate to contact myself (gwebb@stpats.vic.edu.au) or Sports Administrator Ms Tina Benoit (tbenoit@stpats.vic.edu.au) at the College if your son has achieved some special sporting success outside of BAS and SPC. Alternatively contact the college on ROWING Rowing Regatta season is in full swing with a busy weekend this weekend. 4 SPC CRICKET The last week of the school holidays saw SPC Ballarat play host to our fellow Edmund Rice schools; St Patrick s (Launceston), St Kevin s (Toorak) and St Virgil s (Hobart). Day one of the tour saw us head down to the wonderful facilities at St Kevin s where we took on St Virgil s in a oneday match. In tricky conditions SPC were on the back foot early losing key wickets early, with Jai McHenry (21) and Nick Martin (19) the only batsmen in the top seven to make double figures. Just as SPC looked to bundled out cheaply, two of the younger members of the side, Jack Riding (29) and Mitch Tuddenham (19*), put on a marvellous 50 run stand for the final wicket to get SPC to 10/128. In reply SPC got off to a dream start with Nick Martin picking up two wickets in the first three balls to have St Virgil s reeling at 2/0. However, some slow but steadying partnerships through the middle saw St Virgil s push past the SPC total to finish at 5/130. Nick Martin the standout with the ball picking up 3/20. Day two had us back at SPC to take on St Kevin s in the annual Dr Peter Casey Cup. After a rain delay, SPC got off to another dream start with Sam Jackson and Jeremy Learmonth combining to reduce St Kevin s to 5/13 after 10 overs. However, some brutal swinging from the St Kevin s lower order saw them score at 7 an over for the remaining 25 overs to post a solid 6/199 after their 35 overs. That would be as far as the game would go however as a massive downpour out of nowhere saw play halted and several hours of unrelenting rain brought the game to an untimely close. Day three saw the beginning of the major 1 st XI fixture, the annual Br Breach Cup, a two-day game against our old rivals; St Patrick s Launceston. After the previous days rain, Launceston surprisingly elected to bat first on a soft and tacky wicket. It proved to be difficult going for the Launceston boys as Ballarat skipper Sam Jackson and fellow opener Tom Godson bowled some unplayable spells and were unlucky to only pick up the two early wickets. A slow but solid partnership for the third wicket had Launceston looking like they were building a good platform to launch from, however Taylor Sutton (1/27) provided the breakthrough which allowed Dom Cousens (1/10), Jai McHenry (2/16) and Liam Taylor (1/4) to rip the heart out of the middle order. Sam Jackson (2/38) and Tom Godson (22) came back to pick up another wicket each to have Launceston teetering at 9/134 but a frustrating last wicket partnership of 30 allowed Launceston to finish at 10/164 before Andrew Milroy (1/21) finished off the innings. In reply SPC came in with around 30 overs to bat that night and got off to a poor start losing Lachie Snaith third ball. However, Alex Porter (19 from 80 balls) and Jai McHenry were able to steady ship and bat through the majority of the time before Porter fell with around 10 overs to go. McHenry then combined with Tom Lyon to see SPC through the rest of the day to finish the day at 2/66. Day four brought with it a lot of rain and as a result meant that play was delayed from the usual 10am starting time until 2:30pm. SPC Ballarat picked up where they left off with Jai McHenry and Tom Lyon combining to push the total past 100. After Lyon (24 from 69 balls) fell and Jackson soon after, McHenry and Sutton looked to push Ballarat towards the total with ease before a mix up saw McHenry run out (the only way he looked like going out) for an impressive 67 from 163 balls. From here regular wickets fell as Ballarat inched closer towards the total until with 2 runs needed for victory and three wickets in hand Ballarat stumbled to lose two quick wickets with experienced hands Dom Cousens and Andrew Milroy falling. This left scores tied with one wicket in hand and the two youngest members of the squad, Liam Taylor and Jack Riding, trying to find the final run. The run would come after four balls with Liam Taylor (9 from 23 balls), who had calmly batted through the last 10 overs, threw the bat a wide one and fly through the gap in front of point to return the Br Breach Cup to SPC for the first time in 3 years. Jai McHenry was fittingly awarded the man of the match medallion for his magnificent efforts with bat and ball.

5 Finally, just a big thank you to the families who welcomed a SPC Launceston billet into their homes for the week and provided them with some wonderful memories. Also many thanks to the ground staff here at SPC who were fabulous in trying conditions. Luke Corden Coordinator of Cricket
