Martin van Zyl Saturday 10 October 2014 was a very first for the current West Coast Region with the 2014 Boland Bowls Open Men s and Ladies Two-Bowl Singles Championship Finals being held simultaneously at Velddrif and at Lagoon Golf & Sports Bowls Clubs. Not only was the bowls of the best, but the administrative and catering arrangements, together with the excellent preparation of the greens, surrounds and the club facilities, surpassed the expectations of everyone who was privileged to be part of the occasion. 2 Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 2 PRESIDENT SE VERSLAG : NOVEMBER 2014 Boland rolbal se 2014 seisoen het in Augustus met alle erns afgeskop. Vele verwikkelinge het plaasgevind en vele plaasvervangers moes gekry word vir die vakante Tesourierspos en Sekretarispos. Die res van die Bestuur het ten volle gewig ingegooi en met n spanpoging is Joggie Snyman van Bredasdorp en Jenny Meintjes van die Paarl geköopteer as Tesourier en Sekretaris onderskeidelik. Dank aan Una wat ons in hierdie tyd bygestaan het met die ontvangs en uitstuur van belangrike korrespondensie. Mense, julle weet nie watter inpak die verskuiwing van n Sekretaris se kantoor is nie papiere, elektroniese inligting, bokse, kas en als! Gelukkig is Jenny enkellopend en het haar motorhuis as kantoor ingerig. Vir haar wil ek aanhaal wat Dave Hedges gesê het: I believe in myself. I am a strong person.i will achieve my goals. Nothing will hold me back. This is my time to shine. In hierdie tyd moes die Bestuur bontstaan om die aansoek om befondsing by die Wes- Kaapse Regering te voltooi, agtermekaar te kry en betyds by die Boland Sportraad in te handig. Sonder dié fondse kan Boland Rolbal nie die mas opkom nie. Terselfdertyd het Boland Sportraad se vorms vir sporttoekennings op ons lessenaars beland en weereens is die Bestuur diep kant in, swem met mag en mening en met die hulp van Henry Fourie, Martin van Zyl en Una Conradie gaan spelers van die jaar, spanne van die jaar en federasie van die jaar genomineer word. Boland wil vir al die ander federasies wys wat rolbal is. Die verblydendste tussen al die harde werk, is die entoesiasme waarmee ons spelers, klublede, klubs en sommer die hele rolbalwêreld op die facebook -kar geklim het. My familie het my vir sowat twee jaar behoorlik vertel wat tegnologie is en as jy nie deel is nie, mis jy uit. Wel, hier is almal nou op die rolbal -kar en almal praat rolbal, vertel stories en spog met foto s van Classics en All-days. Dit gons behoorlik. Dankie rolbal entoesiaste vir jul manier om Boland Rolbal te bemark. 3 V A T G R A S Pieter Linde Reëls en Etiket / Rules and Etiquette Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 3 Vredendal se Besigheidsliga NUWE REËLBOEK Rolbal Suid-Afrika se Reëls van die Sport Rolbal, Derde Weergawe het met ingang van 1 Oktober 2014 in werking getree in Suid-Afrika. Die nuwe reëlboek (Geel) kos R30 en kan deur jul klubs bestel word. CHANGES (NEW LAWS) There are some cosmetic changes which serve the purpose of clarifying a matter and making interpretation easier. Laws have also been re-grouped all laws concerning a particular matter have now been placed together. This naturally means that all the law numbers have changed. There are only two changes that are directly applicable in South Africa, namely: The score board and the score card; Position on the mat when delivering a bowl (foot-fault rule). REMEMBER: Whenever the Laws state The Member National Authority can decide it means that for Domestic Play (play in South Africa) Bowls South Africa can change the Law to suit our conditions, and the change must be described in our Domestic Regulations. In the new Law Book Bowls South Africa s Domestic Regulations are located at the back of the book (pages 147 to 159). 1. THE SCORE BOARD AND THE SCORE CARD Skips no longer have to deal with the score card as described in the Laws (Refer to Law page 152.) 2. POSITION ON MAT WHEN DELIVERING A BOWL (FOOT-FAULT RULE) Before delivery, a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At the moment when he/she delivers the jack or a bowl, the player should have all or part of one foot on or above the mat (Law 7.1). COMMENTS In the old Law Book (page 9) the term should indicated that actions were compulsory. In the new Law Book the word should has been replaced by the word MUST (page 9). Pierre Olivier Vredendal Rolbalklub het drie jaar gelede begin met n Besigheidsliga wat in die derde kwartaal van elke jaar afgeskop het. Besighede kon spanne van drie lede elk inskryf en daar is op Donderdagaande op n rondomtaliebasis meegeding. Die eerste jaar het ses spanne ingeskryf, gevolg deur agt spanne verlede jaar. n Amptelike borg, Alfalfa Verblyf, is vir die kompetisie verkry en vanjaar ding n vol perk van twaalf spanne mee om die titel van Rolbal Besigheidskampioene. Ons is baie trots op die gewildheid van hierdie kompetisie en die sukses wat daarmee behaal is. Elke span mag nie meer as een geaffilieerde rolbalspeler in die span hê nie, maar n span se spelers mag van week tot week wissel. Die kompetisie word nou reeds oor n termyn van twee maande gespeel en is n gewilde item op die kalender van sportaktiwiteite op Vredendal. Spelers ontvang elke Donderdag na spel n ligte ete waartydens heerlik gesosialiseer word. Ses-en-dertig deelnemers, waarvan die meeste nie gereelde rolbalspelers is nie, gaan dus hierdie jaar elke Donderdag by die rolbalklub byeenkom. Die sukses van die kompetisie kan reeds gesien word in die nuwe lede wat by die klub aansluit. Vroeg in 2014 het ons sewe nuwe lede, wat hul blootstelling by die sakeliga verkry het, bygekry. Op die foto hierbo verskyn die 2013 wenners van die Besigheidsliga, die Ouditeursfirma Claassen & Stone saam met die borge, Alfalfa Verblyf.

4 The rain in Greyton... falls mainly on the bowling green Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 4 Adrian Purslow Greyton s first open tournament of the new season was played in testing conditions on Saturday, 27 September. The Trips format obviously held a lot of appeal to clubs throughout the Overberg and several entries had to be declined. Ten teams were scheduled to compete alongside two teams representing our club, but there was a need for a quick rethink when 12 teams arrived. Reluctantly, but not to disappoint players who had travelled considerable distances to take part, the decision was taken to withdraw the Greyton teams. So for the first time in the club s brief history, a home tournament was played without our club being represented! There Hats off to the unmistakable Sakkie Viljoen of Worcester. As rain poured down and everyone reached for waterproofs, Sakkie woudn t be seen without his club hat! The winning Hermanus team: Johann Spies, Riaan Pienaar and Liz Spies with Gideon Malherbe of Village Vinos, the tournament sponsor were four teams from Caledon, two each from Hermanus and Worcester and one each from Kleinmond, Franskraal, Riviersonderend and Swellendam. The next concern was the weather. Showers were forecast throughout the day and more than once players had to quickly put on waterproofs. Not the best conditions for bowling! First and second places were filled by the two Hermanus teams and one of the Caledon teams took third prize. The regular visitors to our competitions would all admit that they really enjoy playing in Greyton for quite a few reasons the friendliness of our club, the beautiful surroundings and, not least, the wonderful catering. More about golf on the green... Following the article on golf on the bowling green in the August 2014 issue of Raakskoot/Toucher, Adrian Purslow sent us the following report: Eat your heart out, Ernie Els! After a failed attempt several weeks ago to launch golf on the green due to bad weather 16 bowlers finally made it onto the golf... er, sorry, bowling green at Greyton when it was decided to take advantage of the Heritage Day public holiday on 24 September. Despite one or two hiccups, the bowlers had a fun time and voted the challenging game a hit. Bruce Fuller hit on the idea during talks with a few prison officers. (Let s remove any doubts by swiftly saying, Bruce is innocent! ). As ever, he applied a lot of technical know-how and even more hard work preparing the golf course and equipment, basically nine immaculate tees and holes, a map of the course and a scorecard. The green was laid out to represent par 3s (the equivalent of bowls short ends), par 4s (middle range ends) and par 5s (long ends). A string complete with scoring pencil attached was marked with measures to indicate whether the player had scored a birdie, a par, a bogey or a doublebogey. Sounds complicated? It isn t! Admittedly, the scoring did add to the concentration element for the non-golfers, but once they became familiar with the concept, it was all as easy as Big Easy swinging his mighty irons. The beauty of the game is that it really challenges a bowler s ability to judge distance and apply weight accordingly. As we all know to our cost, a bowler can learn the mechanical basics of the game, but weight is the one factor that can t be taught. Participants each paid R10 to play. They played in pairs and completed nine holes at a rapid rate, so quickly in fact that everyone played 18 holes in far less than two hours. And the winner received half the pot! The green is now back to its natural state, but it will not be too long before the golf bug bites again. And the hope is that more bowlers will be convinced by the pioneer 16 to join in. It is a lot of challenging fun!

5 Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 5 FROM THE HIP Compiled by Martin van Zyl And so the saying goes, When all is said and done, there is more said than done! Is this, in fact, true about our sport? Are our bowlers and administrators generally really involved and bent upon ensuring that we at least leave a meaningful and worthy bowling legacy for new bowlers that we are currently endeavouring to bring through the ranks, or are we merely talking and not doing? Perhaps a little introspection is required! There are, however, some very successful clubs in the Boland who (unfortunately), on the other hand, do not talk about their successes through this specific medium. Do our bowlers really care about each other? Are they prepared to go the extra mile to help newcomers and fledglings to adjust and to enjoy playing this fine sport? Perhaps readers would like to let Raakskoot/ Toucher have some interesting anecdotes so that we can share in their much appreciated efforts! In sharing successes, great or small, everyone could benefit and a special appeal is therefore made to such clubs to contribute stories and ideas that have contributed to all aspects of enjoyable club life. As one of the leading districts in the country doing so much to introduce and to promote bowls amongst the youth, Boland can indeed hold its head high, considering and observing how many learners and youngsters are turning out for bowls sessions, especially during the past six to seven months of this year. Some of our earlier younger bowlers are continuing to make a name for themselves and for our district. In this regard, we would like to congratulate Anneke, Stephan, and Ezile on their welldeserved selection and official BSA bowling visit to Namibia. Boland is indeed proud of you and we wish the three of you (and your accompanying supporters) an exciting and successful experience! Business Leagues, or rather Fun Leagues (Pretligas in Afrikaans), as we now call them in our part of the country, are continuing to flourish and the prominence afforded this very successful method of promoting bowls by, inter alia, our Development Officer, Theuns Coetzee, is certainly waking up the older fuddy duddies to an indisputable reality! In short, we are successfully getting more and more feet on our greens and the recent increased membership of some clubs is a direct result of this activity. Has Boland Bowls already, as part of its efforts to promote bowls, considered rewarding the club that brings in the highest percentage of newly affiliated bowlers this season? Perhaps one of the many sponsors of the Fun Leagues would like to be associated with a special award in this regard! For a number of past seasons, our district s official Standing Committee for Greenkeeping has failed to get off the ground. However, at last, word has it that our new representative on the Executive Committee for the Winelands Region, Lampies Lambrechts, has indicated his interest in and willingness to assist with the re-establishment of this very important commit-... is certainly waking up the older fuddy duddies..., tee.we certainly applaud your fine efforts to provide an essential service to our 40 affiliated clubs. Are there perhaps any other of our Standing Committees in the Boland that are either struggling and/or simply not functioning? In this regard, those bowlers who perhaps have just a little time to put back into the sport that we all love, may be prepared to offer their services. Please do not hold back, but kindly inform your Regional Representative of your availability and willingness to make a positive contribution. After all, Boland is well known for its effectiveness and successes both on and off the greens, so let s keep our fingers crossed and trust that all our Standing Committees are fully manned and operational! As one who has been brought into the journalistic fold by our Editor, Riaan Pienaar, I would like to take this opportunity to place on record our very sincere thanks to him for his fine effort in establishing and so diligently and successfully running the affairs of Raakskoot/Toucher for over six years. Unfortunately, Riaan s untimely (my personal assessment) decision to retire from the voluntary position that he has so efficiently and indeed, PARAPROSDOKIANS professionally, filled as Editor-in- Chief of our very popular and well-renowned news bulletin, will be leaving a void. There is no doubt whatsoever that our district and all its members have benefited tremendously from the important contribution that Riaan has made to bowls through the impressive production of Raakskoot/Toucher. Riaan, we will certainly miss your challenging editorial and all your hard work and trust that you will, in your retirement, nevertheless continue to remain directly involved in promoting bowls. Hats off to the West Coast Region for certainly proving a point with its members recent achievements in district championship events. Despite the very large area that the region covers, it would appear that our future representative teams/ sides will undoubtedly comprise more and more bowlers from this particular region. Well done, West Coast, not only for the very high standard of bowls produced by your members, but also your excellent greens, facilities and top-class administration. Die patroon van jou asemhaling hou direk verband met die patroon van jou optrede. Wanneer jy gespanne is, sal diep, rustige asemhaling jou stres verminder, want suurstof help die spiere ontspan en maak die gemoed skoon. Sodoende sal jou bewegings meer ritmies wees en sal jy beter besluite kan neem. Aangesien ons meestal maar 50% van ons longkapasiteit (boonste gedeelte van borskas) gebruik, moet ons doelgerig oefen om willekeurige beheer oor ons asemhaling te verkry. Gebruik minstens 10 min per dag om die volgende oefening te doen: Aktiwiteit (Jy kan staan, sit of lê terwyl jy oefen; lê is waarskynlik aanvanklik die maklikste.) Ø Plaas een hand oor jou naeltjie, maak jou oë toe en asem in deur jou neus en uit deur jou mond. Ø Asem nou in vir 4 sekondes, laat die lug die onderste gedeelte van jou longe vul (Maag- Ø Ø Ø Ø asemhaling), maag en diafragma beweeg uitwaarts jou hand ook. Hou jou asem in en verplaas dit geleidelik (op,op,op) na die boonste gedeelte van jou borskas. Hou dit daar vir 4 sekondes. Asem langsaam uit deur jou mond deur die asem te verplaas vanaf boonste borskas ruimte na onderste gedeelte van jou borskas. Pers die laaste bietjie lug uit jou longe deur die maagspiere saam te trek.voel hoe die spanning skietgee. Maak jou oë oop en bly nog n rukkie in dieselfde posisie. Maak hierdie oefening deel van jou oefenprogram. Dit sal jou longkapasiteit vergroot, jou liggaam sal gesonder en fikser wees en jy sal jou emosies beter kan beheer. A Complete bowler needs more than technical skills; he must also have psychological skills which can help him in difficult situations on and off the green. The grass is always green for Patrick Ponoane, who after 30 years of working at the Hermanus Bowling Club, knows more than enough about keeping the greens in perfect bowling condition. He was recently presented with a special certificate in recognition of his long standing service. Although his family is originally from Sterkspruit, Patrick grew up in Zwelihle and started looking after the gardens of the bowling club at the age of 21, in Later he was asked to help cut the grass. I learnt the trade from two legends- at the club, Attie Visser and Jacob Nyangintsimbi, who had worked there for many years. I started cutting the sides and cleaning up around the courts. It was important to learn all about the upkeep of the grass. The greens are obviously very important. The grass can t be too long or thick, as it makes the bowls court heavy. I inherited my love for gardening from my grandfather, Ronnie Green Fingers Ponoane, who was known for his trade. Patrick worked himself up the ranks and two years ago he was promoted to greens-keeper. The upkeep is hard work. In summer, when the grass grows quicker, we have to cut it every day. Patrick Ponoane, the greenkeeper at the Hermanus Bowling Club, was recently honoured with a 30-year long sevice award Some days I have to wait for the games to finish and mow the lawns late into the night. It is also important to know which pesticides and fertiliser to use. There are many aspects to the trade. Patrick is now looking for someone to train to take over when he eventually retires. I have worked with many people over the years, but you have to show real commitment and dedication to make it to greenskeeper. He says he has seen many fantastic tournaments over the years, but he especially enjoys the annual Business League when he participates as a bowler in the Green Fingers team, sponsored by the Hermanus Times. We named the team after my grandfather as he has always been my inspiration. Hermanus Whale Festival Trips Chrissie van Wyk Hermanus Bowling Club com bined the opening of the 2014/15 season with the Whale Festival Trips sponsored by Hi-Q and Discovery on 4 October The greens were once again alive with laughter and the clicking of bowl against bowl in perfect spring weather. It was tough going among the 28 teams, of which eight were from Helderberg, Kleinmond, Caledon and Franskraal. A Kleinmond team, skipped by Roy Galloway, took top honours with a Hermanus team, skipped by Keith Kruth, close on their heels. In third place was the Caledon team of Peter Quinn. The winning Kleinmond team with Japie Louw of Discovry

7 Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 7 Letters to the Editor Having contributed freelance articles to Raakskoot/Toucher over the last number of years I have got to know the Editor, Riaan Pienaar, reasonably well. Riaan has always displayed a genuine passion for the game and during his editorship he strived to uplift the reader s knowledge and understanding of the game on all levels. The publication not only included the necessary statistics pertaining to the results of competitions as well as articles governing the interpretation of the laws, but Riaan also encouraged the contribution of letters which may have included some controversial content just as long as they benefited the game in general. The overall objective benefit would justifiably be given preference over the subjective personal opinion and on the odd occasion Riaan has had to find it necessary to edit some letters before publication. The quality of the layout and the editorship of the language content was always superior. Riaan is to be congratulated for his immense contribution over the past 6 years in guiding Raakskoot/Toucher to its current high quality status. Lekker rus, ou Grote! 11 Nuus uit die Weskus Streek Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 11 Bredasdorp se jong spelers presteer weer Leon Meyer Die Weskusstreek het die seisoen afgeskop met n Noord - Suiduitdaagkompetisie op Velddrif se perk, waar die swaarde op 30 Augustus gekruis is. Die formaat was Vywe - Drieen Parespel in die oggend en Vier- en Enkelspel die middag. Voor middagete was dit reeds duidelik dat die Noorde gekom het om die kompetisie te wen. Na middagete gaan die geveg voort en die Noorde stap as oorwinnaars van die baan. Die organisasie van Velddrif Rolbalklub was weereens uitstekend. Die Weskus kon nogmaals spog met die meeste inskrywings vir die Ope 2-bal Enkelspel en die Finaal is die eerste keer hier plaaslik aangebied (Kyk die voorbladberig - Red.). Leon Beer se voorstel dat akkommodasie vir die spelers vanuit die ander streke aangebied moet word, het dadelik byval gevind en aanbiedinge van gratis verbkyf het ingestroom. Enkele spelers het daarvan gebruik gemaak, maar nie eens die helfte van die blyplekke is gebruik nie. Die Finale is op Langebaan Buiteklub en Velddrif gespeel. Die wenners van die Mansafde- ling - Johan Pienaar, Ian Rice en Basie Louw - is al drie Weskussers en by die Dames het Dale Gentle van Velddrif silwer verwerf. In die Senior 2-bal Enkelspel het die Weskusspelers weer baie goed gevaar, met Dorothy Boucher en Vollie Volschenk wat albei Goud gewen het en Rob McDuling van LCE Silwer. Dorothy, met die hulp van Leon Beer, maak seker dat die spelers wys waartoe hulle in staat is met die TID s. Die Weskussers moet nou nog net die keurders oortuig dat hulle aanspraak maak op n plek in die Bolandspanne. Rob McDuling is reeds baie betrokke met die voorbereiding van die perke om goeie speeloppervlaktes te verseker. Annatjie Rademan sorg weer dat daar genoeg is en dat alle Bolandkompetisies glad verloop. Die Weskus het goeie aanwinste vanuit KwaZulu-Natal ryker geword. Sarel en Annetta Groenewald van Richardsbaai, wat verskeie jare hul distrik verteenwoordig het, het by Velddrif Rolbalklub aangesluit. Rob McDuling het vir Natal gespeel en na die verdeling van Natal het hy vir Kingfisher en later vir Port Natal gespeel. Hulle verseker my dat hulle die Weskus geniet. Riaan Pienaar Watter groter beloning kan daar vir n rolbalklub wees as dit wat Bredasdorp Rolbalklub te beurt geval het! Daardie klub het vyf - ses jaar gelede begin om die jonger garde - van hulle was nog op skool - by die sport te betrek en sommer gou het hulle begin presteer - nie slegs as beginners nie, maar as volwaardige spelers wat hul staal ook in die ope kompetisies getoon het. Verskeie berigte het die afgelope aantal jare in Raakskoot/ Toucher verskyn oor die pres- tasies van spelers soos Anneke Snyman, Stephan de Jager, Ezile Fourie en Monique Payne en nou het Bredasdorp se belegging groot dividende verdien deurdat eersgenoemde drie spelers ingesluit is in Suid- Afrika se Juniorspanne wat vanaf 31 Oktober tot 2 November vanjaar aan die International Quadrangular in Windhoek deelgeneem het. Boland Rolbal is trots op hierdie jong spelers en almal is dank verskuldig aan Bredasdorp Rolbalklub wat spelers van die hoogste gehalte oplewer. 12 Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 12 Hermanus Bowling Club vs Western Province Cricket Club Tish Bryce Saturday, 11 October 2014 dawned bright and clear. It was Whale Festival time here in Hermanus. The town was buzzing with visitors and activities, depicting a celebration of fine food, good wines, good weather and great hospitality. In other words, it was party time. This augured well for a day of highly competitive bowls between Hermanus Bowling Club (HBC) and Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC), from Cape Town. This was the second occasion that the two clubs have met for a day of friendly rivalry on the green as well as enjoying the camaraderie that is so peculiar to the sport of bowls. The first occasion was in October 2012, when WPCC took the honours. The second occasion, in 2013, was a bit of a washout due to heavy rains making the greens at HBC Shot times three! Riaan Pienaar This story appeared in the August 2009 issue of Raakskoot/Toucher, but on request and because we had fewer readers at the time and many players missed it then, I decided to publish it again. During the All Cape Tounament of May 2009, a team from L Agulhas played against a Helderberg team at Hartenbos. Late in the game, when the L Agulhas team was already far ahead (we eventually won the game and the section), one of the Leads moved the jack to less than a meter from the ditch. I played Second and moved the jack into the ditch, where my bowl ended up less than 20 cm from the jack. In such a situation you usually as- unsuitable for play. This year, however, the weather has been kinder with the greens at HBC playing particularly well for the time of year. Five Men s teams and three Women s teams, had been selected by their respective clubs beforehand. The aim of the day s play was, primarily, to enable the WPCC selectors to assess individual players for the forthcoming men s Flag and the ladies Muter League Tournaments commencing in January Needless to say, HBC Club also took advantage of putting their best players forward, despite the fact that Boland does not play league games as part of their competitive bowls calendar. The format of the day was to play two games, each consisting of two sets of nine ends. The winner of a set gets two points and the team winning both sets gets four points, plus one point sume that you are going to win the end, but that is not always the case... Helderberg s Second played a shot that was only slightly too strong and would have fallen in the ditch if it did not come to rest against my bowl. Shot! But that was not the end of the story. Their Third s bowls (the blue one), also played slightly too strongly, would also have ended up in the ditch if it had not stopped against their other bowl. Another shot to Helderberg! Now the cameras were already out and pictures were taken of this remarkable combination. But lo and behold: their Skip played a perfect shot that only lightly touched the blue bowl and fell over for another shot! Three shots! If each team wins a set, the winner is decided with a tie-breaker of three ends and if that does not produce a winner, a final decisive end is played. The winner of the tiebreaker gets the point awarded for a win, therefore three points out of a possible five. This is the format of play during the Flag and Muter season. At stake was the rather unusual trophy designed by George Erasmus, a longstanding member of HBC. This trophy depicted the shape of a lawn bowl with the colours of Hermanus Bowling Club being depicted on the left and those of WPCC on the right. At 09:00 the WPCC teams, resplendent in their new bowling shirts sponsored by Personal Trust, took to the greens. The teams from HBC also looked very smart in their own navy, red and white colours. After a hard-fought day of excellent bowls, the final scores revealed that HBC were the winners on the day and the winners of that coveted trophy. Thanks must go to the initiatives of both Dr George Dommisse (WPCC) and Alec Rabie (HBC) who have cemented the establishment of this friendly and competitive association between our clubs. 13 Raakskoot/Toucher Nov 2014 p 13 BOWLS DEVELOPMENT Martin van Zyl In Bowls Development Guidelines (February 2006) Bowls South Africa describes bowls development as important because it: Provides a platform for people of all ages to participate in bowls activities through various programmes. Encourages participation of all people to play bowls including those who were formerly marginalised in sport like women, disabled, senior citizens and others. Increases the number of people participating in an activity that enhances their physical wellbeing by playing bowls, thereby, Improving the health of the Nation. Increases the standard of performance across all facets of bowls through education and training programmes. Identifies talent, develops and channels talented bowlers into proper training programmes and academies. Bolsters National pride through International competition. Builds the future of our sport. At Club level, Club Development Teams are encouraged to have think tanks to generate ideas that can be used by them and their District to create a greater interest and generally improve the game of bowls in all respects. Broadly speaking, this would include running promotion/recruitment drives, supporting existing bowlers, making use of the talent identification programme, building youth bowls and improving other facets of bowls. To recap, Development is there to ensure that progress is facilitated in all directions, through specific projects such as recruitment of new bowlers; the establishment of a youth bowls programme in schools and under Ensure prompt acceptance by club members of all new age group; support of existing bowlers; administration development. Bowls de- velopment is part of the process of improving the standard of play and the number of people playing bowls. It is about investing time and effort NOW for returns in the FUTURE whether short or long term. Everyone plays a role in bowls development. This includes administrators, coaches, technical officials, bowlers, teachers, and all sports leaders in their various fields. We will need to ensure that these people have the right information at their disposal so that bowls can be one of the options that are included in the array of many other sports. It is EVERY bowler s responsibility in one way or another, not merely to take their own pleasure from our sport, but also give time and effort to the growth of bowls in our country. Each and every bowling club MUST appoint a Development Officer (DO) and the DO, in turn, must then appoint a keen, interested and motivated Development Team (DT), to ensure that development at all levels is effectively and successfully carried out. A Club s development team has to be realistic and accept that as volunteers in bowls there are many things that need to be done to make bowls successful. Overall development team members should be seen as the communications centre for marketing the sport of bowls that must be done both internally as well as externally. The responsibilities of a Club s DO can, in terms of the requirements of Boland Bowls, be summarized as follows: members irrespective of population group or age. 2. Arrange coaching in close collaboration with official club coaches. 3. Participate actively in all promotional drives. 4. Market bowls as a sport for all age groups. 5. Ensure that apparel is not a deterrent for beginners. 6. Promote a cordial relationship with the local media and ensure that regular bowling news and photographs are published. 7. Provide club members with essential bowling knowledge and skills. 8. Create an atmosphere of congeniality amongst all players, interested persons and potential bowlers. 9. Keep up to date with the development and progress of bowls and ensure that players are kept fully informed. Each Club s DT must be prepared to accept the important responsibility of taking essential initiatives to ensure that the sport is promoted, kept alive and developed at all times. Everyone, not only in the club, but in the surrounding community/communities must be kept well-informed about the sport, the benefits and enjoyment that can be derived by participation therein. One of the most important tools that a DO can utilise to fulfill the above within the precincts of the club, is a newsletter. If upon taking over the responsibility of DO, such tool does not exist, then the first task that a DO should perform after identifying and appointing a DT to assist with Development, is to establish a club newsletter. Such aspects as a suitable name, an enlightened editor, identifying and finding sufficient sponsorship, meaningful obtaining contributions (articles, photos etc) and arranging for adequate distribution, are but a few of the more important issues that have to receive early and constant attention. The previous image of bowls being a game known as old men s marbles, is, fortunately, nowadays becoming extinct and with youngsters from all age groups participating in the sport on a regular basis, the DO must compile a Development Programme (DP) to include inter alia young people from schoolgoing age right through to post tertiary level and to ensure that they are brought into the fold and kept there. The DO has an important task to ensure that regular goal setting, distribution of development plans, compilation and reviewing of marketing strategies, promotion of fundraising projects etc are all carried out in a properly organised and professional manner at all times. It is also absolutely essential that bowls development is measurable and that the DO ensures that progress with bowls development is measured and assessed on a regular basis. 14 2014 ENVAR BUYS GEDENKTOERNOOI 4 5 Oktober Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p 14 Theuns Coetzee Hierdie alombekende toernooi in Kaapland het vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar groot hoogtes bereik. Dié spesiale geleentheid vir bekendstelling en goeie mededinging het nou uit sy kinderskoene geklim en ontwikkel in n volwaardige interdistriktoernooi vir die jeug. Vanjaar se toernooi is weer te Oudtshoorn onder beskerming van Eden aangebied en, interessantheidshalwe, sal Kaapstad in 2015 as gasheer optree. Vir leerders en ander jong spelers in die Boland beteken dié toernooi ontsaglik baie omdat daar so min ruimte aan hulle gebied word om die spel in hul onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe te geniet. Die positiewe impak wat hierdie toernooi op die gesindheid van die gewone rolbalspeler teweegbring, moet hoegenaamd nie onderskat word nie. Die toernooi is deur n gewilde jeugfees tydens die Junieskoolvakansie voorafgegaan. Van die jong deelnemers het hier reeds hul eerste voorsmakie gekry van wat rolbal regtig behels en hoe dit voel om teen maats van dieselfde ouderdom mee te ding. Vir die nodige voorbereiding en keuring van spanne, is Bolandproewe drie weke voor die toernooi op Bonnievale gehou. Daar was absoluut geen probleem of gesukkel om die perke vol te kry met jong spelers wat reeds meer as n jaar rolbal speel nie. Interessantheidshalwe, asook vir die distrikrekords, het die keurders vanjaar vir die eerste keer in die geskiedenis n tawwe stryd gehad, weens die hoë standaard van spel, om die koring van die kaf te skei! Om verblyfkoste so laag as moontlik te hou, is besluit dat Boland se groep spelers slegs een aand sou uitslaap. Derhalwe moes die opgewonde deelnemers op Saterdag vroegoggend per bus uit Bonnievale vertrek. Die besoek aan n deel van die land wat vir die meeste van hulle onbekend was, asook die uitdaging om Boland te verteenwoordig teen gedugte opposisie, het tot die geesdrif van die deelnemers bygedra. Daar was ongelukkig nemers vanjaar met meer as 30% gegroei het, het tot die opwinding bygedra. Die jongspan kon mekaar onthou en vriendskappe wat voorheen gesluit is, het verder gegroei. Sulke jong spelers het ook die vermoë om selfs die bestuurders van verskillende distrikte om een tafel te kry en die spel te geniet, iets wat ons nie tyd om vooraf n paar balle op die perke van Oudtshoorn te rol nie, maar almal het na die groot uitdaging uitgesien, veral toe hulle deur n saal vol medespelers ingewag is. Die feit dat die aantal deelsport tog so drasties kort! Dit is seker die enkele grootste rede waarom almal wat by rolbal betrokke is, moet belê in ons kinders, want hulle kan ons weer leer dat daar wel n sport soos rolbal bestaan, en dit sonder n eie ek, klas en ras, maar met n absolute vooruitsig om die genot en kameraadskap van die sport te ervaar. n Bemoedigende gesig was die kinders van selfs jonger as tien jaar wat begin rolbal speel en aan wedstryde deelneem. So is nog n mite die nek ingeslaan dat hul handjies te klein is en hul balle nooit by die witte sal uitkom nie. Diegene wat hierdie soort stelling maak, was nie daar nie! Onthou, oor tien jaar is hierdie jongspan 20 jaar oud, met tien jaar ondervinding. Dan is dit hulle wat in ons rolbalsfeer die septer gaan swaai! In die gees van die sport en met puik organisasie van Eden se Theo van Aswegen, was dit vir ons spelers moontlik om na die toernooi te reis, slaap, speel en eet vir minder as R250 per deelnemer. 15 Raakskoot / Toucher Nov 2014 p15 WHY I DO NOT PLAY BOWLS From Take Gras / Vat Gras, Newsletter of Sables Bowls, April 2014 Ifall into the age group and I am a business executive. A family man with lovely wife and kids. Since I can remember I have been involved in sport, from school throughout university, participating in swimming, athletics, tennis, rugby and in recent years cycling, scuba diving and golf. I suppose I qualify as a sport fanatic. I was invited to what I think the bowling fraternity calls a Fun Day and it was great. I could bring my wife and kids and we had a great day. We certainly got informed what bowls as a sport was all about. I was hooked to add this sport to my long sport CV and although my wife and kids are too involved in domestic and school responsibilities, I most certainly wanted to give bowls another try. Nothing happened after the fun day and I did not hear from the club or my friend again. Determined, I scraped courage together and on making enquiries (which was not easy), I was told to play bowls on Saturday afternoons starting at 14:00. So, in my casual sport attire (same I had on during the fun day) and flat shoes (a requirement I was told) I arrived at the bowling club. I immediately felt out as everybody was dressed neatly in whites and club colours. I was impressed nevertheless as I have always believed in the pride of playing in your club colours. What I further noticed was that there were very few players of my age group, mostly senior bowlers, but what the hell, I came this far. Nobody greeted me nor made me feel welcome but I was not going to be deterred. So I enquired if there was any chance of having a game. The answer came from a sour faced elderly lady: Young man, you can t play like that, you need to play in whites, club rules you know! Another elderly gentleman overheard my predicament and came to my rescue. He introduced himself as the President of the club and very kindly organised me some bowls from the men s locker room. Pity he said, we are busy with league but there are a few members playing Tabs-in on the bottom green. Put your tab in and you can join them. I had no idea what a Tab was or where to put my tab. More questions and eventually answers but I felt very uncomfortable. Well we played Fours and I was asked to deliver the white ball and also to start first every time. I tried to ask many questions about the game and also showed keenness and interest when they decided the score. This however came to an abrupt end after I was rapped over the knuckles a couple of times for speaking out of turn, not standing at the right place, this in addition to the funny looks I had to endure. I found the game very slow and boring when I eventually got to understand that I must play my two bowls and then stand at the back and keep quiet. It took the whole afternoon at slow place and although I never felt I let the team down I certainly did not feel part of the team. I further enquired what social events happened weekly at the club where my wife and kids could join in but there were none. Well that was that and I was certainly not going to subject my wife and kids to the cold treatment I received. The seed of interest was still waiting deep inside me to germinate and although I did not have the courage to go to the club again, I felt the need to do my own research to get to know more about bowls. The conclusion I came to was it was living up to it s reputation of old man s marbles, the bulk of member-ship at clubs was 60+, they mostly if not all the time play the boring and slow Four bowl formats (even though I believe there are many faster and more exciting formats availa-ble and that were very few social attractions at bowling clubs for the younger generation like me. So until I am also 60+ I will stay with playing golf and go cycling with my family on weekends. Perhaps one day, if bowls is still around. Oh! My friend phoned to tell me there is an-other fun day coming but I said: No Thanks! BOLAND / S.A. RECORD? Martin van Zyl From what has so far been researched, Robertson Bowling Club has undoubtedly done it once again! Yes, the most teams in a calendar year to participate in a Business/Fun League (in Afrikaans Sake-/ Pretliga)! A total of eighty-two (82) teams comprising 328 participants have just completed playing bowls over two periods (total of 6 weeks)! Not only has this fine achievement contributed enormously to the club s coffers, but, even more importantly, bowls has been so well introduced and promoted that it has literally become a household name in Robertson and throughout the popular neighbouring winegrowing area. Are there any other bowling clubs in the Boland, or in South Africa for that matter, that are so successfully promoting bowls on a similar scale, bearing in mind the composition of the total population of their villages/towns/ cities? Further to the above wonderful bowling news, Robertson B.C. has, this year, already received over 20 applications for membership from Fun League players having fun in Robertson the above participants, not to mention the 12 learners also now playing bowls for the first time. This appears to be just the tip of an even greater bowls awareness campaign! Surely, no-one can deny that bowls is flourishing in Robertson!

16 ROLBAL UIT DIE OOG VAN DIE BEGINNER Raakskoot/Toucher Nov 2014 p 16 Ek het besluit om wat, volgens my mening, die beste bydrae aan Raakskoot/Toucher die afgelope ses jaar was, uit te kies en weer te publiseer. Daar was n klomp uitstekende bydraes, maar my keuse het op Marita Falck van L Agulhas Rolbalklub se gedig met die titel Rolbal uit die oog van die beginner, wat in die uitgawe van Februarie 2010 verskyn het, geval. Hier is dit. - Red. Dis Saterdag en jy s daar. Hordes wit klere bymekaar, Dit lag, gesels en bespreek n reël. Jy luister goed want netnou moet jy speel. Waarin het ek my begeef? Dié dag gaan ek nooit oorleef! Die spanne is nou op die bord, Nou moet jy ook jou maatjies uitsort. Terwyl jy jou naam oral soek en kry Lyk die skip glad nie te bly. Die nr.2 en 3 kyk na mekaar, Wonder seker: wat maak ons met haar! Dan bondel almal op die baan, Ek wonder of ons gaan sit of staan. Alles word gereed gekry, balle, kryte, matte En dan n witte werklikheid, die katte! Dis nou die wit bal in jou hand Wat jou menigmaal in die sop laat beland. Jou Skip knor en wys jou waar hy staan, Hier by my voete, nie op die ander baan! Raad word gegee hoe om die baan te lees. Ag asseblief - hoe moeilik kan rolbal nou wees? Jy lê aan, kortgerol en skip word kwaad, Rol dit terug en gee weer raad. Dié keer lyk dit reg en hy draai om Wraggies nog voor jou eerste bal daar kom. Opponente is nare wesens: Hul leef op geluk en sekere tekens, Klap op skouers, klap op hande, Knor vir jou, jy sien net tande! Jy dink die spul is blind en doof Wil jou net van jou punte beroof. Jou bal lê netjies by die kat Toe die ander ou die skoot kom vat! En dan die buk dis swaar met maag so rond! Van gister af eet jy al gesond. Mens kan maklik n glipsie kry So boontjies en kool moet jy liefs vermy. Daar s n ding wrong bias genoem Rol jy hom is jy gedoem! Almal sê net tingeling en tingeling En later moet jy nog n bell gaan ring. Die groot kant lyk soms so klein! Jy rol dit oor en oor in jou brein En, sowaar, jou hout rol op die ander baan En neem vyf lêballe met hom saam. Party lag sag in hul mou En doen dieselfde met hul volgende hou. Dan kry jy die alewige leerkrag: Maak jou skoon deurmekaar met sy gesag, Hy sê, Vat gras en gewig, ou maat Maar speel slegter as sy eie raad. As jou skip staan en gesels daarbo Dan weet jy sommer dis nou so, Jy s myle kort en ver van die kat! Hy wys voete om gras te vat. Na teetyd is jy vuur en vlam Al jou adrenalien is opgedam. Nou, demmit, sal ek julle wys! Jy konsentreer, jou ore suis. Dis in die sloot, die kop verbrand Drie, vier houte vol van sand! Nou skop hulle balle dat dit waai, Ek skop vier enkels in hul maai! Jy mag geen bal optel as hulle meet: Dis doodsonde, dit moet jy weet. Etiket en reëls sal ek moet leer Maar niemand gaan my hier wegkeer. Tuis kan dinge nou maar lol, Maar Saterdag is ek weer hier om balle te rol. Dis die lekkerste rol, dit kan julle glo, Rolbal bly maar altyd bo! 2014 ENVAR BUYS GEDENKTOERNOOI (Vervolg van bladsy 14) woord terugploeg wel behoort te beteken - n gees waaruit die toernooi gebore is met die dood van Envar twee jaar gelede. Die organiseerders het dit vanjaar goedgedink om sy ma te vra om die trofee te oorhandig en dit kon nie méér van pas gewees het nie! Ons kan ook nie vir een oomblik versuim om aan die ware helde in ons sport erkenning te gee nie - mense wat na jare se genot wat hulle uit die spel geput het, nou terugploeg via die kinders. Johan Havenga van George wat op sy hoë ouderdom die hele toernooi op sy pos langs die veld was, verdien groot waardering. Sy besondere bydrae is ook paslik met n oorkonde tydens die prysuitdeling erken. Ons eie Martin en Wilhelmien van Zyl staan ook nie hier ver agter in die ry nie. Wie van ons rolbalspelers sal nog op hul ouderdom saam met die jongspan in n koshuis slaap en hulle op en langs die perk so heftig ondersteun? Volgende jaar word die toernooi in die Westelike Provinsie (Kaapstad) gehou en daar word reeds gepraat om hierdie baie suksesvolle toernooi verder uit te brei om n onder-35 of selfs n onder-45 groep in te sluit. Ons sien dus nou almal uit na wat hier aan die gebeur is tussen Boland, WP en Eden en wat met goeie samewerking bereik kan word.

17 Raakskoot/Toucher Nov 2014 p 17 Loeries / Kuipertoernooi 2014 Theuns Coetzee Die jaarlikse Kuipers/ Loeriestoernooi tussen die spanne van Boland en Eden, bestaande uit die twee distrikte se opkomende spelers, is vanjaar by Robertson Rolbalklub gehou. Daardie klub het n pragtige perk vir die toernooi voorberei. As daar in ag geneem word dat die hele grasoppervlakte van die perk minder as n jaar gelede heeltemal vervang is, stel Robertson n voorbeeld van wat dit beteken om in ons sport te belê. Daar word nog gedebatteer oor die eintlike doel van die toernooi, maar die Uitvoerende Bestuur sal hieraan aandag skenk. Nou fokus ons eers op die spelers wat gekies is om aan die toernooi deel te neem, van wie baie vir die eerste keer die geleentheid gekry het om te wys watter bydrae hulle aan Boland Rolbal Die spelers luister aandagtig na die reëls Die Kuiper Mans Die seëvierende Boland Dames kan maak. Ons moet ons spelerpoel vergroot en die jonger spelers betrek om die toekoms van ons sport te verseker. Sias Rabie en Mark Beviss- Challinor, die spanbestuurders van onderskeidelik die Damesen Mansspelers, het gedurende die twee dae n goeie insig gekry van waar die verborge talent lê en hoe om die samestelling van spanne te verbeter. Die spelers van beide distrikte het spel van die hoogste gehalte gelewer, met uitstekende skote wat geroep en uitgevoer is. Die gees en etiket op en van die perk spreek boekdele vir die toekoms van ons sport. Teen uitskeityd Saterdag kon Boland met n klein voorsprong spog, maar na twee posisionele skuiwe die Sondagoggend het Eden die voortou geneem. Op die ou end het die Boland Dames die beste in hul afdeling gevaar, maar die Eden Mans het as oorwinnaars uit die stryd getree. From the Editor / Redaksionele kommentaar With this, the 25th issue of Raakskoot/ Toucher, and after covering a total of some 350 pages over a period of more than six years, I am vacating the editor s chair. When Al Cannone and I were asked by Martin van Zyl, the then President of Boland Bowls, to start a quarterly newsletter for the district, we accepted the task with trepidation because neither of us had had prior experience to prepare us for the job and we were not at all sure what we were letting ourselves in for. I accepted the task of putting together the newsletter from contributions by the clubs and individuals and Al helped with the editing of the English articles, by writing many of his own and by helping with the proofreading. I experienced a very steep learning curve in order to understand and use the required technology and to learn how to make pages and to apply some editorial skills and tricks. I hope that I am leaving a product that will form the basis for further improvements by future editors. Ek het reeds in die vorige uitgawe almal bedank wat my gehelp het om elke kwartaal die bulletin die lig te laat sien, maar ek wil nogmaals vir Martin, Wilhelmien en Al bedank vir hul onskatbaar waardevolle bydraes. Ena Linde het ingewillig om die taak by my oor te neem en ek wens haar alle voorspoed toe. Ek glo dat sy met haar entoesiasme, vaardighede en nuwe idees dit wat reeds bereik is, verder sal uitbou en verbeter.
