1 Westquarter & Redding Cricket Club Junior Welcome Pack 2016 The friendliest sports club in the Forth Valley

This is through a series of structured coaching sessions that introduce new skills and give you an opportunity to try these skills in fun and engaging practices and games.

2 Welcome to the Westies, the junior section of Westquarter & Redding Cricket Club. We look forward to providing an introduction to cricket in a fun and safe way with opportunity to improve your skills and learn to work together in a team. This is through a series of structured coaching sessions that introduce new skills and give you an opportunity to try these skills in fun and engaging practices and games. If this is your child s first season with the club you will have many questions including what exactly is Kwik Cricket? Kwik cricket is a great way to introduce kids to this great game, improve their skills and keep them fit and healthy. Stuart Broad England Fast Bowler What is Kwik Cricket? Kwik Cricket is a simple game for all boys and girls from 5 years of age upwards with the emphasis on participation and enjoyment. There are many variations of the game but in essence the ball is bowled and the batter tries to hit the ball and score runs. The team scoring the most runs wins. There is more to the game than can be explained here but if you ask any of the coaches or players I am sure they will be happy to explain fully!! The Kit Kwik Cricket equipment is made from high quality moulded plastic. It is light enough for small hands yet extremely tough and hard wearing. It has been designed as an alternative to traditional equipment to allow the game to be played safely on any flat surface either indoors or outdoors at any time of the year. We also use Cricket Factory equipment to keep the practices and drills different and fun!

The summer will consist of 19 coaching sessions with bronze, silver and gold awards on or after the dates shown below.

3 Kwik Cricket Skill Awards The Kwik Cricket Skill Awards Scheme is in 3 parts, Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Awards test children s catching, throwing, bowling and striking skills in a simple and easy to organise way. The summer will consist of 19 coaching sessions with bronze, silver and gold awards on or after the dates shown below. A lot of the practices can be done at home with a tennis ball and bat for extra practice!

Membership All children are welcome to attend their first training session free of charge, after that a membership fee of 15 is due and covers April to August.

Any winter training will be charged separately. On payment of fees you will receive a membership card which should be carried when attending the club. In addition to training sessions you can use the ground for cricket practice on any day which is allocated for cricket, see Bailliefields Bookings on the website to view days the ground is used by Falkirk Company of Archers (/ On top of the 19 weeks of coaching the annual membership fee also includes a club shirt! This new for 2016 shirt is a replica of the adult shirt with the Westies logo replacing the club badge. What are the Benefits For Your Child? Over the years there have been many brother, fathers and sons that have played for the club and it is something we would like to build on, to provide something for all members if the family. The club then moved to a ground described as "between the dykes' in the area of St Margaret s between the present school and the Meadowbank Health Centre, (now the site of Polmont Library).

8 History The club was formed on Monday 13th April 1908 after a local meeting was held to discuss the formation of a cycling and cricket club. The newly formed club played its first few games on the ground at the famous Blairlodge School (now Polmont YOI). The club then moved to a ground described as "between the dykes' in the area of St Margaret s between the present school and the Meadowbank Health Centre, (now the site of Polmont Library). The club eventually secured tenancy of land at Blairlodge and club members worked together to dig out a square, and to lay the drainage network. In October 1995 the club struck a deal with Wimpy to sell Blairlodge and buy nearby Rough Haugh Farm, becoming the ground now known as Bailliefields. As with Blairlodge, the construction of Bailliefields was a club effort, with much of the work being carried out by the players. From while the groundwork was being carried out at Bailliefields the club played its games at Little Kerse (BP Grangemouth) with the first completed game at Bailliefields taking place on 6th June was a good year with the club reaching the finals day of the ActivCity T20, winning their semi-final but losing in the final And going one better by winning the ESCA Presidents Trophy In August 2015 the nursery at the cricket club opened as Glenbervie Kindergarden signed a lease to rent the property from the club. This was the culmination of five years hard work with club members project managing, dealing with the council, planning, building control, builders, Scottish Power, Glenbervie and providing man power to keep costs down by stripping out the old house and demolishing the extension. This effort was recognised by Cricket Scotland when Stephen Sutton, Helen Sutton and George McLauchlan were awarded the Biggest Change Makers in Scottish Cricket at the 2015 awards.

9 You May Be Asking, How Can I Help? Volunteering The Club is run by many volunteers who provide varying amounts of time to help run the club. We understand the time commitments of parents and would happily appreciate any support available whether it is an hour to help tidy up, help organise an event or more. Ways you can support the club include: Help support coaches at training sessions Driving children to festivals Help organise events If you are interested in supporting the club through any of these methods or indeed any other way you can think of, please contact us via the website or have a chat with Helen, Umar or Steve at any training session. We are always open to new ideas! Facebook and Twitter will be used to advertise any events that we are organising and any help we require. Something easy and free you can do to support the club To help keep the cost of membership down we use easyfundraising.org.uk to provide additional income for the Westies.
