The Flexibility of Engineering April 17 th, 2018 Introduction Engineering solutions are not always a quick process. It can take intuition and a variety of different approaches to solve an issue. Catapults were known for being ancient engines used for hurling stones or objects. Catapults served as siege weapons that were both mobile and effective. This was the key strength to catapults and should be the mindset moving into this event; effectively combining function and mobility using intuition and simplistic approaches. This event is a team event open to all members of an NCJETS club. Each team must consist of three (3) or four (4) club members and each member may only be assigned to one team. Clubs may enter more than one team in the competition; maximum of five (5). Teams will run their catapults during the accuracy competition, and the top three scoring teams will be awarded trophies. There will also be a secondary distance competition. The same catapult must be used for both the accuracy and distance competitions. The top three scoring teams of the distance competition will also be awarded trophies. This event will also award the team with the Most Innovative Catapult Design, and the team with the Most Innovative Use of Materials. NCJETS encourages students to use alternative materials to complete these tasks. This concept of alternative materials will be a leading factor when judging for the Most Innovative Catapult Design and the Most Innovative Use of Materials awards. For example, instead of an all-wood structure, the use of an innovative material that enhances the performance of the catapult, such as a recycled PVC bow, would be candidate for this award. A generally sleeker and more innovative design is what we would like to see achieved by students. *Please do not use a Catapult that was tested in previous years. If this must be done, mechanical modifications and advances should be innovative and impress the judges * Registration Registration opens Friday, February 23, Registration closes Friday April 6, Catapult Rules & Regulations 1
Any questions or required clarifications on any aspect of general or event-specific information must be submitted as an to before April 5, Any submitted questions or clarifications will be posted on the NCJETS website under the FAQ section. NCJETS staff will determine if any clarifications need to be made to the rule(s) and/or criteria. Club sponsors will be notified by of any changes or modifications on April 6, Changes and modifications will also be posted on the webpage. No changes to the rules/criteria will occur after April 5, The event will begin at 8:00 am and continue until all teams have completed their test trial. An agenda will be posted to the NCJETS website after registration has closed, and the number of teams competing confirmed. [Note]: Lunch will not be provided. We will allow a 1.5-hour lunch period. During this period, students may purchase lunch at any on-campus restaurant. Check-In Procedures All team members for every team must report to the Check-in station upon arrival at the competition site. Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM. When your team checks in, you must have your catapult with you. At the Check-in station, your catapult will be verified against specifications listed below. Each team must compete with their own catapult, and have them ready at check in to be verified with the rules and requirements. *Swapping out parts on the same catapult will result in disqualification.* Catapult Accuracy Competition Rules There is only one round of competition. This round is open to all teams that meet all eligibility requirements and will be governed by the rules defined below. If compliance is contested, the NCJETS staff will be is consulted and has the final decision. Full team member participation will be observed and required. *Please have 1 catapult per team. A single catapult used for multiple teams will disqualify both teams * Rules: 5 launch stations will be set up for each team to fire from. A catapult will have 15 minutes to move and fire all 5 shots. Catapults must be mobile and cannot be carried between launch stations. Catapults may fire one shot only from each station. A target will be set up in order to measure the accuracy of each shot; this will Catapult Rules & Regulations 2
consist of a singular overall target that has corresponding deductions surrounding the center target. The event/scoring will be conducted using the following method: Methodology 1. Teams will roll their catapults into the first launch station (of their choosing). 2. The team will then signal to the judge when ready. 3. The team will launch their first projectile, roll the catapult to a second launch station, repeating this process until all five (5) shots have been fired or until 15 minutes is up. Scoring 1. Only fired projectiles that land inside the center target will earn maximum points. Points will be deducted from the maximum at incremental distances from the center target toward the launch station. 2. The raw score will be the average of the three best shot scores. 3. Any applicable bonus points will be added to the raw score to determine the catapults performance index, used in judging. The highest catapult index will win first place. *In the event of a tie for first place, the highest raw team score, (without bonus points) and consistency of shots will be used to judge the winner. Bonus Points *No scores below zero will be given.* Bonus diversity points will be given to each individual team based on their raw score. Each minority on the team with contributes 1% bonus points. [Example: If you have 2 minorities on a team of 4 kids, there will be an additional 2% added to that team s final score.] Launch Stations At each launch station, catapults will be placed against a cone, or marker, along the firing edge of the catapult. o This firing edge must be clearly marked (or will be marked during check in). The catapult must be remotely triggered i.e., not released by hand within the launch square. Everyone must be at least three feet from the catapult when the projectile is launched. *The entire team will be disqualified if anyone is within three feet of the catapult when the catapult is fired. This ruling is non-negotiable. * Catapult Rules & Regulations 3
Catapult Design Criteria Catapult will be checked for compliance with the below specification at the Check-In station. Catapult compliance must be verified before the competition begins. *The following specifications must be satisfied or the catapult will not be allowed in the competition. * The device must be a catapult. Catapult: is a ballistic device used to launch a projectile a great distance without the aid of explosive devices particularly various types of ancient and medieval siege engines. Although the catapult has been used since ancient times, it has proven to be one of the most effective mechanisms during warfare. *Any design of a catapult that does not have a similar style system will be disqualified * Catapult Rules & Regulations 4
o The catapult may be made of any material, but as mentioned in the opening introduction alternative materials are greatly expectant. o There must be a remote firing mechanism installed such that the individual firing the catapult is, at a minimum, three feet outside the launch pad. o Each catapult must be mobile and have wheels on the base. o Overall catapult dimensions may not exceed 2 wide x 3 long, x 4 tall. o Must have a clearly marked firing edge. Projectiles Standard tennis balls will be used as projectiles. The tennis balls may not be modified in any fashion, nor may they have anything added or removed before, during or after launch. Judges will check each tennis ball before each launch. *Any team caught firing anything besides a standard tennis ball will be disqualified. This ruling is non-negotiable. * Example Accuracy Competition Scoring: In this example, we ll assume a team consists of 4 members, 3 of which are minorities. Lunch Station No Deduction (max points; 5 pts.) 4 pt. deduction 3 pt. deduction 2 pt. deduction 1 pt. deduction Figure 1: Landing positions of projectiles The team s raw score is the average of the top three shots (rounded from two decimal points): ( ) / 3 = = 4.67 The team gets 3% added to its score in diversity points: 4.67 * 1.03% = Catapult performance index = 4.81 points Catapult Rules & Regulations 5
Distance Competition *No diversity points will be given for this event.* This event will evaluate the distance capabilities of each catapult. Rules Must use the same catapult for both events Catapult must be aligned in the starting box. The catapult will be given 3 shots to shoot a projectile as far as possible. The furthest of the three shots will be measured to determine the catapults distance index. Honorary Mention Awards *No diversity points will be given for this event. * Two additional awards will be given at the event: Most Innovative Design Most Innovative use of Materials The recipients of these awards will be as determined by NCJETS judges. Catapult Rules & Regulations 6
