2 INTRODUCTION The South Australian Cricket Association s (SACA) mission is to be South Australia s favourite sport a sport for all South Australians. The main objective is to promote and develop cricket in South Australia. This five year strategy is intended to grow the participation of Aboriginal people in all areas of cricket throughout South Australia. To enable this, SACA recognises that the delivery of cricket programs across the regional and remote areas of the state and the development of grassroots cricket in these places is essential. We recognise too, that distance can prove a hurdle in the fulfilment of these aims. Working with the State Government of South Australia and the Office for Recreation and Sport, SACA aims to grow participation levels in cricket through the development of a variety of projects and programs. For example, having the MILO in2cricket skills program run in schools is a great way of teaching kids the basics of cricket in a fun and fast-paced environment. This can then lead to sustained engagement with the game, with communities involved as players, umpires, volunteers, officials and administrators. Through this strategy, SACA seeks to align with Cricket Australia s goal of engaging Aboriginal people as players, volunteers, coaches, umpires, administrators and officials. In doing so, it aims to contribute towards Cricket Australia s overall goal of being a force for positive social change in communities and consolidating cricket as Australia s favourite sport a sport for all. Paul Herzich is an Ngarrindjeri/Kaurna man; who is an Aboriginal landscape architect and visual artist based in Adelaide. 4 STRATEGY OVERVIEW This strategy is intended to grow the participation of Aboriginal people in all areas of cricket throughout South Australia and aligns with Cricket Australia s A Sport For All program. The initial area of focus is on junior cricketing programs. SACA game development staff will play a vital role in identifying and up-skilling regional Community Ambassadors to facilitate these programs. All staff will receive current cultural awareness training to support the delivery of this strategy. Introducing the free MILO in2cricket Skills program to targeted new areas is a necessary first step in attempting to establish MILO in2cricket and MILO T20 Blast Centres throughout Aboriginal communities in South Australia. From here, the strategy aims to link participants with school and community cricket teams. For regions where pathways to a local cricket club are less accessible, community carnivals, Deadly Cricket and Street Cricket programs are proposed to provide a feasible alternative. Visits from players competing at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) - formerly know as the Imparja Cup- as well as appearances from players linked to the Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League (BBL) and Women s Big Bash League (WBBL) teams, will demonstrate elite player pathways and also foster goodwill within communities. The appointment of Jason Gillespie as the head coach of the Adelaide Strikers represents a fantastic opportunity to link our strategy with arguably Australia s most successful Aboriginal men s cricketer. The ultimate goal is to establish a lifelong love of cricket and to create mentors for future generations. As part of its five year strategy, the SACA will first approach the north west region of South Australia. 6 PARTICIPATION TARGETS YEAR ONE Target Communities Ceduna Koonibba Oak Valley Point Pearce (Burgiyana) Raukkan What? The aim is to establish MILO in2cricket Skills at these locations. This is a four-week program with an emphasis on teaching the basics of the game. Ideally these programs will be run once a year at an absolute minimum. As part of delivering this program in these areas, there should be a focus on recruiting School/Community Ambassadors who will ensure this program is sustainable and runs well into the future. It will contribute toward engaging the local cricket clubs mentioned here for mentoring opportunities and for creating pathways. Visits from NICC players/coaches (particularly to regions without a local cricket competition) would highlight another potential pathway. A visit from WBBL and BBL Adelaide Strikers representatives would greatly increase the prestige around the MILO programs. Given his status within international cricket, any involvement from Jason Gillespie would be invaluable. 6 Regional and Remote 5-Year Aboriginal Engagement Plan

7 YEAR TWO NEW Target Communities MILO in2cricket Skills to be established in: Port Augusta Whyalla Oodnadatta Target Communities from Year One SACA will work with the target communities from Year One to establish MILO in2cricket centres. This is an eight-week program which expands on what has previously been learned in the MILO in2cricket Skills program. Ideally, these centres would be run by locals (School Ambassadors, Community Ambassadors) through relationships established in Year One. MILO in2cricket Skills will continue at these locations. 7

YEAR THREE NEW Target Communities MILO in2cricket Skills to be established in: Riverland River Murray Yalata Target Communities from Year One MILO in2cricket Skills and MILO in2cricket centres at these locations will continue. Furthermore, SACA would look to run community carnivals in these regions. These carnivals should incorporate aspects of the Street Cricket and Deadly Cricket programs, as described by Cricket Australia s community engagement framework, which are informal and provide opportunities for participants to develop their skills in a fun and safe environment. Target Communities from Year Two SACA will work with the target communities from Year Two to establish MILO in2cricket centres. 9 YEAR FOUR Target Communities from Year One SACA will support participants from the inaugural programs to continue their involvement in cricket through their schools or local clubs. By Year Four of the program, SACA will have established the meaningful community links to complement the pre-existing community events that occur in those target communities. For those players looking to pursue elite pathways, it is hoped that links with the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (formerly Imparja Cup) can be established as well as other high performance pathways. Target Communities from Year Two MILO in2cricket Skills and MILO in2cricket centres at these locations will continue, with community carnivals supporting involvement in these areas. Target Communities from Year Three SACA will work with the target communities from Year Three to establish MILO in2cricket centres. MILO in2cricket Skills will continue at these locations. The South Australian Cricket Association will continue to work with the South Australian National Football League, to visit the communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands each year of the Strategic Plan with a focus on school-based cricket delivery. 9

YEAR FIVE Target Communities from Year One SACA will continue to support the involvement of residents of the Year One Target Communities in school, community and club involvement. MILO in2cricket Skills and MILO in2cricket centres will continue in these locations. Target Communities from Year Two SACA will continue to support participants to continue their involvement in cricket through their schools or local clubs. Oodnadatta poses a challenge for club involvement due to distance, though community carnivals can be established with local communities. For those players looking to pursue elite pathways, it is hoped that links with the National Indigenous Cricket Championships (formerly Imparja Cup) can be established as well as other high performance pathways. 11 WHERE WE WANT TO BE IN 2020 This plan is intended to grow the participation of Aboriginal people in all areas of cricket throughout South Australia. SACA has ensured this strategic plan sits within Cricket Australia s inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan for and National Indigenous Cricket Strategy (2014/ /18). It reflects cricket s commitment to engaging with Aboriginal communities by promoting Indigenous-specific cricket programs and working to establish an environment where Aboriginal people have the opportunity to achieve their full potential, irrespective of their age, gender, location or ability. It is through this establishment of exciting new opportunities for Aboriginal communities, combined with a genuine spirit of inclusion, that this strategic plan aims to ensure that SACA contributes towards the goal of making cricket a sport for all Australians. 11
