Following a landmark television finals event in 2011 that was played at the 50 yard-line in Cowboys Stadium, the Open finals will now - for the firsttime ever - be played outdoors on legendary Virginia Street in Reno, Nevada. History will be broken twice, as the event will also feature the introduction of the first-ever Bowling s Senior U.S. Women s Open, for participants over fifty years-old. Bowling s U.S. Women s Open captured international attention in 2011 and we are raising the bar even higher in Setting one new record wasn t enough, so as the Open comes to Reno, we are fittingly doubling down - hosting our first-ever outdoor tournament and introducing a brand new senior women s championship, said Steve Johnson, executive director of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America. In addition to setting new ground for our industry, this year s event will be a salute to the men and women in uniform who protect and safeguard our nation. High Score Products (HSP) was originally founded in 1985 to sell a cleaner called U Clean/U Score Urethane Bowling Ball Cleaner, but it wasn t until 1991 that an opportunity to make bowling balls presented itself to Bill Chrisman. With the opportunity at hand, Mr. Chrisman hired Keith Orton, a pioneer in manufacturing high performance urethane bowling balls, to set up a facility to manufacture bowling balls for High Score Products. HSP produced their first bowling balls in 1991 and the name Storm was selected as the trade name for the new bowling balls. As the Storm name gained prominence, it overshadowed the HSP company name. When we started making bowling balls in 1991, our goal was to make innovative products that you could depend on, commented Corbet Austin, Storm s Vice President of operations. Every year we have been able to do that better and better. It has been great to be a part of a company that grows every year! In 1994, the company name was changed to Storm Products, Inc. We are where we are, because of our people, said Dave Symes, President of Storm Products, Inc. Our success is because we have taken care of our customers. We have had our ups and downs over the past 20 years, but we have always taken care of them. Present day, Storm s production facility and corporate office is located in Brigham City, Utah. I apologize for spending too much time looking for a computer similar to my old one and that was somewhat hard to find. Finally I bought a new one and have to learn to operate it. Before I start, I want to thank Bob Taylor, Ed Abakumoff and the one nameless for carrying on the deaf bowling news in this paper in my absence. With so much missed deaf news to tell, I start with the latest news, which is a long time staple of this column. BOB JONES 807 LEADS DEAF TRAVEL AT AMF CERRITOS CERRITOS The nation s oldest deaf traveling league, Southern California Deaf Traveling League made its 52nd season s stop at AMF Cerritos Lanes with its first of three position rounds. The results find the league average leader Bob Jones leading the short 5 bowlers honor roll list with 807. Jones started off with , and then trailed off with The league s long time President Ed Abakumoff was second 778 with , followed by Andy Lorenzo s 728 and Jeff Stansell s 219/705. Connie Marchione made the list with his clean 200 game. Anita Lorenzo topped the league s 4 women with 619. Previously in the league s stop at Canoga Park Bowl last October 23. Stansell topped the honor roll with his best 879 with The position round results find many position changes as the league leader Covina with Francisco Navarro winning 5 points, making a near sweep 18-2 win over 2nd place LA City, dropping LA City down to 6th place. Third place S. F. Valley with Bob Jones 807, won 13-7 from 4th place Whittier, moving S. F. Valley up to 2nd place and Whittier down to 5th place. Fifth place Riverside, a12-8 winner over 6th place Mid City, jumped up to 3rd and Mid City fell to 7th place. Seventh place OC County with a win over 8th place Glendale jumped up to 4th. Leader Covina with 70 points has a 13 points lead on S. F. Valley (57) and the rest are close with as much as 5 points from each other. The league thanks AMF Cerritos Lanes management for letting us bowl as scheduled and the next trip will be to Brunswick Covina Lanes on November 20 at 11:00 AM. There will be a Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot, which League Secretary Bob Taylor plans with strikes in frames to win a turkey prize. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: Velarde Wins ABTA at Covina Bowl Do Hits for $3,000 Match Series $1,068 hit by Romero, Maruyama and Wynn Match Game is $3, starts again at $1,900 ABTA at Westminster Lanes 2 Day Event 3rd week Handicap Bonus Special Pacquio $pecial $3, 1st Place with Bonuses $1,000 Min 1st COVINA Welcome everyone to the weekly edition of ABTA news. We returned to Covina Lanes where we saw 223 entries come out and support the ABTA. We had a semi tough shot for the tournament making the cut scores of +41 for the men and +24 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (3 men and 1 female) were James Sweet (+40), Steve Benavente (+39), and Esther Tambio (+18). Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 52 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week to cash their checks. The top qualifier for the Men was Kenny King Kwan with a +108, and for the women it was Aileen Cheung with a Each of them will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week the top qualifier draws the Match SeriesThis time it was worth $1,068. Kwan drew a 482. We had 3 bowlers that bowled this score during the qualifying squads, they were Ping Romero, Kelly Wynn, and Kent Maruyama. Each will get $356. We will estimate the Match Series at $270 at Westminster Lanes event. The roll-off for the went quickly leaving Vuong Do to go for $3,000. He would hold true to his prediction before the roll-off started. He had lots of luck to take home $3,000. At Westminster Lanes, we will still have $2,000 due to our back up pot. In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Thomas Licauco and Jeff Taino with a 1385 for $130. Finishing second were the father and son team John Licauco and Thomas Licauco with 1358 for $110. There were a total of $1,310 paid out in doubles and 21 paid spots with low to cash of In the semis we would see a couple of different leaders in all three games. In the end, Kin Sang Chung would finish on top with a plus +133 and finishing in a very close second was Jun Contreras with a +131 to sit out the first round. It took a +36 for both the men and women, as there would be 4 women who made it into the match play finals. Our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500, which is maxed out. Kin Sang drew a 243. We had no bowlers who shot that score so it will carry over. We will have $3,500 at Westminster Lanes, and continue to build on the second and third back-up pots. This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven losers were Vien Tran, Frank Ortega, Dom LaGuardia, Javier Avila, Mary Huynh, Nghiem Tran, and Angela Lung. They received checks of $105 each. In the second round, the losers were Patricia Lin, Sean Nguon, Robert Ricketts, and Jun Contreras. They received checks of $120 each. This would get us down to the final five bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $66 (Greg Velarde) to a high of $187 (Ricardo Baca) depending on who would win. In this round we saw a close match between Ricardo Baca (16th seed) bowling Greg Velarde (11th seed) that went down to the 10th frame. Ricardo came up in the 10th needing only a mark to advance but left the 5 pin on his first ball and on his spare shot he just barely missed it to the left allowing Greg to advance to the semi-final match with a 195 to 192 victory. Roland would go on to win this with a 224 to 183 and also advanced to the semi-final match. Both Miriam and Ricardo finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $135 each. However, with Ricardo on a reduced entry he only received $81, which is 60% of the prize fund. Our semi-final match was all set now, and it would be bowled on Lanes 45 and 46 (where they had the new scoring units installed and working), and pitted our 11th seed against our 14th seed. In the weekly horses we would see Greg paying $66 and Roland paying $71 if they would win their match. This would be a match where we would see both bowlers continue their good bowling. It was close after 5 frames with both bowlers tied. In the 6th frame, Roland opened and that would give Greg a slim lead and took advantage with another strike of his own in the 6th. Both bowlers would open in the 7th frame and at that point Greg was leading by 20 pins. It was Greg who would make sure he was going on to the title with a strike in the 9th and then the first two in the 10th to finish with a 234/246 to Roland s 171/204. Finishing in 3rd place was Roland Sanchez this week for $205. For those lucky investors that had Greg as a horse, he paid $66. Roland bowled very well at Covina. The title game is set and bowled on Lanes 41 and 42. At the start of the match, you could tell that Greg was on a mission to win his 5th title. He has been with us 14 years, and he would start out with a strike and a spare. He recorded his highest game of his career, 229. After a 6-game series of 962, and his 486 handicap, Erik went into first place for the Prince s Division with 1,448. He was officially declared our 2011 Tournament Prince. Erik attended Fresno State University and it was there he became involved in bowling for fun with many of his fellow students. Following graduation Erik and his best friend from FSU fun bowlers decided to join a league at Valley Bowling Center in Madera. Erik became extremely competitive and after one year of bowling on standard lane conditions, he and his gutzy friend Steve joined a league that used the Sport Bowling conditions. Then, Eric decided to bowl the State Open Tournament with the men from Valley Bowling Center. Erik and Eddie Espinosa took 7th place in Doubles. Erik says he owes much thanks to his friend Eddie who introduced him back to the game! There was a record breaking performance by 46 year old, Inger Bortolazzo, a 174 average bowler from Santa Barbara, who highlighted the Princess Division. Inger was a first time entrant in this tournament, competing against a field of 56 women averaging 175 or under, all who would bowl two3-game blocks. From the first frame forward, it was obvious Bortolazzo remained focused and in control of her game recording 209, 192, (701) + 184, 234, 211 (629), and with a handicap of 156 giving her a grand total of 1,486, which immediately moved her to the top of the leaderboard. And, when it was all over, she was Officially declared our 2011 Tournament Princess. Although Bortolazzo was never a member of a youth program, she remembers back in the l970 s when her mother bowled leagues and she would tag along. Inger has been a league member at Zodo s Bowling & Beyond Center, bowling for only the past three years, participating only one night a week. She says she owes a good deal of thanks to Tom Shepard, Pro Shop Operator in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria who taught her how to bowl during his clinic lessons at Zodos Bowling & Beyond. Keep tuned, I think you will hear more about these two competitive people! 2011 Prince and Princess Tournament PRINCE AND PRINCESS TOURNAMENT (At Vista Entertainment Center) October 22-23, 2011 FINAL RESULTS MENS DIVISION 1. It is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 at ARLINGTON LANES in Riverside. The lanes are located at 7100 Arlington Avenue and can be reached at You can still enter the tourney. Please call the Citrus Belt office at for details. The BVL (Bowlers To Veterans Link) Tournament is conducted annually by the Citrus Belt to raise money to be used to enhance the quality of life of active duty, reserve, and veterans on the front lines or at home. The BVL is a nonprofit charity, founded in 1942, to honor our armed forces and show we value their sacrifices for our country. Citrus Belt BVL chairman, ED MOTE, said the tourney will feature dozens of door prizes, including new bowling balls donated by local pro-shops. He promises this years tourney will be the biggest ever. Citrus Belt president, MIKE RADDEMAN, wants to remind all bowlers that all money raised in California, stays in California. While the state and federal governments do a lot for our veterans, many personal and recreational needs can only be met through private charitable donations. The BVL is the USBC charity to help our service men and women. Please join us at Arlington Lanes on December 4th and help our service men and women with their needs. 7 BOWLING NEWS Page 7 And The Second Round Begins... by Aimee Gomez Downey Herzog Insurance jumped out to an early lead after earning the only sweep, against the poor Tifco Industries team. Brian Main led the pair with his 228/612 set, while Steve Gurrieri and his sixteen pound house ball added a /607. Raul Rosales fell just short of par, but what was most impressive was the 8-10 on his last ball to score a 199 triplicate. Bowlium split 4-1 with Powerhouse Video to put themselves in second place. Arnold Cheesman led the winning team with his 222/594. Vernon Adams /662 led the league with his nice bowling, and along with Harry Wong 221/605 led the pair and Powerhouse, but staying out of too much trouble earned Bowlium the wins. Kegel is in third after their 4-1 evening against Heineken USA. Rick Easley 236/626 and Brandon Kraye /625 led Kegel to their wins, while Bruce Colbert s 257/629 got them the third game, but without much help, that was all they got. ABTA seems to be a force to be reckoned with, taking four from first round winning Gold Coast Hotel. Matt Garcia led the pair with his /648 series and was third high individually on the evening. Clyde s Video Games took 4 from Tri-Star Vending, although Tri Star s David Yamauchi was second overall for the night. Yamauchi shot /659, and did not get any team participation, so only won the first game. David Bartlett /624, Ramiro Garcia /617 and Nick Wilson /617 led Clyde s to the second, third and total wins. In the closest battle of the evening, Pro Approach and Linder Insurance split 4-1, but the games were close, , , Sysco won three from Erickson Foods thanks to a huge second game win. Billy Myers Jr. 268/605 led Brylaw Accounting to three wins over Threadworks. Eric Snow /607 did well for Threadworks and helped them win games two and three. Not much to report this week. The league average was only 187. Averages came tumbling down. The tension after all the pins had settled was palpable, and audible for that matter. Hopefully, we will all get our equipment in order, figure out how to tackle the lanes after the carry down sets in, and score better next week. Have a good one! The strong winds were blowing every where, then the rain, thunder and lightning was so loud it echoed against the mountains, and in some areas they even had sleet and hail. Let s make it a great week by bowling some great scores. by Treesa Spencer BRAGGING TIME Centre Drive, Lake Forest CA (949) LAKE FOREST Saturday Juniors : Our Youth Bowlers were honored by assemblyman Don Wagner and Lake Forest Councilman Scott Voigts, last week, for their efforts in helping children s charities. The Kids in the Saturday Morning Juniors have started a charity effort known as Kids Helping Kids and this month the kids voted to give the donations to the Ronald McDonald House. We are very proud of our juniors. Six of the kids have shot games over 200 and are now in the 200 Club! This week the high scores for the majors were shot by Sam Grayston 210 / 491, Jack Grayston 195 / 498, and Zack Evert 193. For the girls, it was Kyra Vergho with the high game and Rilee Raith with high series. In the Bumper division, Brooke Williams scored the high game of 98 and Little Piper Seawright scored the high two game series of 174. Dan started off the evening with a 215 then came back with 11 straight strikes. Sure, you think I m going to say he left a ten pin on his twelfth ball but I swear it was the 6pin that cost him a game. I guess he wasn t too rattled because he came right back with a 268 game and a grand total of 977 for his four games. Dave Lindsay was second high for the week with / 956. Seth Leader also shot a big 956 series with games of and 259. Jim Taczy wasn t to be ignored either as he was strong every game with / 926. 9 BOWLING NEWS Page 9 the continuing story by Steven Felege CHAPTER 7 Making Spares The secret to carrying a 200 average is to make your spares. To put the importance of spare making into perspective, consider this: The highest possible score in a game with no spares (or strikes) is 90. The highest possible score in an all-spare game is 190. Knocking down just 10 more pins makes a difference of 100 pins in the final score! Shoot just two or three strikes in a row and bam! - you have a 200 game. Making spares is easy once you have zeroed in on the pocket. Spot bowling (using the arrows on the lane as your targets) is the key. This aiming system operates on the theory that a target 15 feet away is easier to hit than a target which is 60 feet away. Once you have established where to stand and which target to hit in order to put the ball in the pocket, follow this rule of thumb: Right-handers: For every pin to the right of the pocket, move your stance three boards to the left. For every pin to the left of the pocket, move your stance four boards to the right. Do not change your target! Left-handers: For every pin to the left of the pocket, move your stance three boards to the right. For every pin to the right of the pocket, move your stance four boards to the left. Do not change your target! This generalization can be applied to combination spares as well as single-pin spares. The trick is to think of combinations of pins as single-pin spares. For example, to make a 5-7 split, a righty should aim for the nine-pin. A ball heading for the nine-pin (which isn t even there) is very likely to graze the five-pin and send it toward the seven-pin. Get the idea? The exception to the rule is the ten-pin for right-handers and the seven-pin for left-handers. There is much less room for error when shooting these spares because they bring the gutters into play. Avoiding the gutter is paramount because once the ball enters one, it is out of play. If it jumps back out, any pins it knocks down do not count. To avoid the gutter, consider the following: To make the ten-pin spare, a righty should move the stance as far to the left as possible and use the area around the middle arrow as the target. This keeps the target line away from the ditch longer. It also causes the ball to hook less because there is always more lane conditioning oil in the middle of the lane. To make the seven-pin spare, a lefty should move the stance as far to the right as possible and use the area between the third and fourth arrows as a target (lefthanders have more natural hook to their shots). Tip: Two very common combinations are almost impossible to make. These are the 4-6 and the 7-10 splits. When faced with them, make sure that you nail one of the pins! Do not try to make the spare! The precision necessary is beyond human capabilities. Getting one pin has three positive consequences: A pin hit by a ball will give you a chance of actually making the spare by bouncing around a bit. This is where luck becomes important. A missed pin will just stand there until it is removed by the sweep, costing you, and your team, pin count! Games are won and lost by that one pin. You want to be the bowler that wins by a single pin! (Encourage your opponents to try to make these spares). Staying calm and continuing to perform establishes you as a bowler, not a hothead.
