4 VCV Zone Competition Introduction & Early Beginnings The initial concept of the VCV incorporating a zone based level of competitive cricket matches for Over 60 s players, was initially raised at the VOSCA Planning Conference at Moonee Ponds on 7 th & 8 th March The delegates from all the participating Clubs agreed on the introduction of Key Strategies at the conference and the particular one for the zone competition was to. prepare a plan to introduce a Vic. Championship competition within the existing fixture. The Executive/Fixture Committees were then given the responsibility to have the structure and logistics of such a competition developed by July 2016 in readiness for the upcoming 2016/17 season. Initial Zones Club Allocations and Promotion to Players A Zone Sub-Committee was formed by the VOSCA Executive Committee which comprised, Ian Hammett, Joel Mc Glynn, Barry Borlase, Kel Grant, Ian Gibson, Bill Dobson and David Cordy. A meeting was held on 15 th June 2016 involving the Zone Committee (apologies from Ian Gibson and Bill Dobson) and after much discussion it was resolved that 4 zones would be established across Victoria and the following zone matches would be trialled for the 2016/17 Season. Zone 1 (NORTH) Zone 2 (WEST) Zone 3 (EAST) Zone 4 (SOUTH) Sunbury Hobsons Bay Ringwood Casey Benalla Geelong Mt Evelyn Kooweerup / Iona Vic Country Essendon Glen Waverley Bayside Richmond ACS Warrandyte Mornington Hamilton Yarra Valley Gippsland Matches would be played on 3 Sunday dates: 30 th October, 8 th January, 19 th February The VOSCA Executive then called for nominations for the roles of a Zone Co-ordinator and Zone Selectors for the upcoming 2016/17 season, with the following members selected: Zone Games Co-ordinator (reporting directly to VCV Vice President - Operations) - David Cordy. Zone Selectors: Zone 1 Zone 2 Zone 3 Zone 4 Barry Borlase Peter Cassell Robin Court Ian Gibson Rex Bennett Les Quarrell Bill Dobson Ian Rowland It was decided to play the first round of zone games on Sunday 30 th October However, with the Perth National Championships only one week away, the Vict Selectors decided that the Over 60 s selected Division 1 & 2 players should play a trial match instead. After the successful Perth National Championships, many of the Division 1 and 2 players were keen to see the zone games develop. So, after many conversations and an initial promotion to all VOSCA players through regular s by each of the Zone Selectors, the first of the zone games were played on 8 th January The games that were planned for the initial round were: - North Zone V s West Zone (at Dempster Reserve, Sunshine) and - East Zone V s South Zone (at Narre Warren Nth Reserve, Narre North). Due to the fact that these early zone games weren t able to be entered onto MyCricket, the game s scorecards and results had to be written up with match reports and scorebook photographs see Appendix 1.

5 2017/18 Zones Competition Review After the initial trial season of zone matches in 2016/17, the Executive Committee decided to continue with the concept and appointed David Cordy to be the Zone Games Co-ordinator again. David then set about fixturing the zone games into the VCV Club Fixture and to ensure that the first round of matches were played before the Over 60 s National Championships in Canberra in November The zones were re-jigged and ACS were swapped from zone 2 to zone 3, due to the fact that Mt. Evelyn and Glen Waverley have small player numbers that would compete in these games, and the change would even up the competition. The 2017/18 zones and their selectors were then set up as follows: Zone 1 (North) Sunbury Benalla/Wodonga Vic Country Richmond (Selectors: Rex Bennett, Bill Johnson, Barry Borlase) Zone 2 (West) Hobsons Bay Geelong Essendon Hamilton (Selectors: Peter Cassell, Les Quarrell) Zone 3 (East) Ringwood ACS Glen Waverley Warrandyte Yarra Valley (Selectors: Peter Robertson, Robin Court, Bill Dobson) Zone 4 (South) Casey Kooweerup/Iona Bayside Mornington Gippsland (Selectors: Ian Gibson, Ian Rowland) Given the short amount of time between the Over 70 s Championships in Adelaide and the Over 60 s in Canberra, it was decided to have the first round of zone matches played on Sunday 5 th November This was comprised of 2 Teams from each zone, in order to ensure that as many Canberra registered O/60 s players as possible could play. This doubled the requirement for additional grounds, so that the competing zones could play their games on double turf grounds, as close to each other as possible. The Teams were selected from each zone, however, the North and West zones had difficulty getting enough Canberra Nationals players to fill their teams. So, it was decided to have the North and West Zone game with one team each and the East V s South game with two teams each. Top-up players, who were not playing in the Canberra Nationals were also invited to play in these matches. The Round 1 matches were played on November 5 th 2017 as detailed in Appendix 2: Zone 1 (North) V s Zone 3 (East) at Hansen & Etzel Reserve Airport West (2 teams) Zone 2 (West) V s Zone 4 (South) at Crofts Reserve Altona North. (4 teams)

6 Umpires Involvement & Allocations The initial zone games were adjudicated using resting batsmen as umpires, as well as some experienced cricket tragics like Barry Borlase and Les Quarrell. However, with a $10 players fee per match continuing in 2017/18, it was decided to incorporate official umpires for the zone games, to give them a more authentic and professional feel. Ian Leach (VCV Umpires Appointments Co-ordinator) was contacted to help with the appointment of official umpires to each of the games. Ian took on the role of selecting the available umpires for each of the games, as well as monitoring their performance and accuracy. So, the three games played in Round 1 of the 17/18 season had their own umpires, with resting batsmen acting as Square-leg. This was an important outcome for the competition as it allowed the captains and selectors at each game to concentrate on the players performances for the respective teams. It was also decided that the official standing umpire would be paid $150 per day as per usual Cricket Vic guidelines. MyCricket Statistics As with the Umpire allocations, it was decided that these games should have the players performances recorded, as happens with the normal Over 60 s Club games, VCV State and Nationals Championships matches. Ian Leach (VCV MyCricket Support and Web Site Administrator) was again contacted to look at a way of incorporating the match scorebooks results onto MyCricket via the VCV Portal for all matches played. Each of the matches scorebooks are now photographed by the Zone Teams Captains and sent to David Cordy for checking. They are then forwarded to Ian for lodgement onto MyCricket. This is seen as an important aspect of the zone competition, because it gives the Victorian Selectors a guide as to each players performance against a better standard competition (as would be expected in the State matches and National Championships). It also gives the Victorian Selectors a chance to vet any new players coming into the Over 60 s competition that they perhaps haven t seen, or didn t know about. Ground Allocations In the first year of the zone competition, the selection of suitable turf grounds was seen as a critical factor for its success. It was equally important that the grounds were equidistant to the majority of the players coming from each zone and were available to be used on a Sundays after the local club games had been played the day before. Many Melbourne metropolitan cricket clubs were contacted to check their feeling about hosting these Over 60 s zone matches. It s important to note that we now have a reliable group of grounds to call on. As each zone match is planned, we try to ensure that the two competing teams aren t disadvantaged by having to travel long distances. The aspect of playing these matches in regional centres like Benalla, Geelong, Bendigo and Traralgon will be taken into account in future seasons. The current Melb Metro grounds that have been used so far, are as follows: Elsternwick Park - Glenhuntly Rd. Elsternwick. Dempster Park Reserve Phoenix St. North Sunshine. Hansen & Etzel Reserve Etzel St Airport West. Crofts Reserve Blackshaws Rd Altona Nth. Narre Nth Rec. Reserve Belgrave-Hallam Rd Narre North. Bryan Martyn Reserve Derwent St Newport.

7 Future of Zone Competition Matches in Victoria It is acknowledged and completely understood that not every Over 60 s player wants to play at a more intense or competitive level. Many are content to just get out on the park, have a bit of exercise, reminisce the old days with their cricket buddies and socialise with a few refreshing ales after each game. That is fantastic and we should do everything to encourage and promote that side of Over 60 s cricket. However, some players strive for a more competitive standard of cricket and to aim to compete at the highest level they can while they are still able to. The zone competition caters for these players. Following on from the initial concept raised at the VOSCA Planning Conference in March 2016 for an intermediate cricket competition between the club games and the State / National Championships levels, the Victorian Zone Competition was established. Almost 2 years have passed and the zone competition is starting to gain greater acceptance. Of the 442 registered Over 60 s players on MyCricket in Victoria, the 9 zone games played to this point have attracted approximately 128 Over 60 s players. Many of these 128 players have played in every zone match and have performed very well. In future years we would like the zone competition to take on a more competitive feel, by incorporating an annual best zone Champion Shield to be played for. This would require the MyCricket website to be opened up to include a VCV Zone Ladder displaying the results, points and percentages of each zone. The final round each year would be the play-off round for the zone Champion Shield. Then the VCV Zone Shield can be presented to the winning zone captain at the annual VCV presentation dinner. These ideas are suggested to give the Zone Competition a greater focus for those players and selectors involved. By creating a premiership ladder format, we can generate greater parochialism amongst the participating players and the zone selectors will ensure that they are always looking for the better players to be involved with these games in their particular zones. This in turn would lift the standard of Over 60 s players looking to be selected for Victorian teams in future state games, National Championships and even for Australian Team selection.
