Nunawading Cricket Club - Round 8 Welcome to season 2011 to 2012 PRESIDENTS REPORT Cricket Stuff There are only 3 games remaining in the season before finals commence. All Senior teams, including the One day Team are a mathematical chance of playing finals. For a couple of teams, they have an easier path, as they are in the top four already. The teams outside the four chasing a spot need to really play good team cricket in the remaining games, and may need other games to fall a certain way. Finals are not beyond any team yet, now is the time to really GO. For the teams currently in the top four, let s not be complacent, there is still work to do. For those who don t know me that well, my competitiveness clearly outshines my ability (NOW). That said I am determined and passionate about the progress and success of our cricket sides. Around the Club Great job organising the Golf day last week Andrew Lord! Glenn Scales prevailed with 46 stableford points. I believe Glenn may have snuck past the handicapper. The highlights were Andrew Lord not scoring 155 and Mick Mackay who really should not play golf ever again. Stu has worked very hard on the Sportsman s Night for February 4. There are tickets remaining so please come along and make the night a success. Subs Due now, speak with the committee to arrange payment or a payment plan. 3 Page 3 AT THE BAR After a big outright win it was good to see the 2s stay around and support the 4s in their run chase then head down to the back oval to watch the 5s bowl. With the sun out and the beers going down easy it was hard to tell what the 2s had more fun doing, sledging the opposition or sledging some of the Nuna boys. And with 3 of the 5 sides winning it was good to see plenty of people hang around the clubrooms after the game. We held the Nuna golf day last Sunday out at Kingston Links in Rowville. A big thank you to everyone that played and especially Greg Clark for giving us all a good laugh with his fashion sense, probably one of the worst golf shirts ever seen on a fairway. Other entertainment on the day also came from Lordy who turned up in his normal state of looking like he had been out all night. While JaJa entertained us with his rubbish impersonation of a golfer. This included losing 6 balls, teeing off and not making it past the men s tee (the ball rolled backwards behind the marker after he hit it) and playing a tee shot at a near impossible right angle that somehow resulted with the ball ending up behind the green of the previous hole. In the end Scales, who somehow managed to get a handicap of 30, won the day. So congratulations Scales we finally found a sport where you can actually hit the ball. It is also good to see that Hubble hasn t been deported and is still in Australia after a run in with the law. Hubble headed out for a night in the city with Monty, Willy D and Lordy. And as normally happens on a night out with these boys things got rowdy with drinks being throwing around all over the dance floor. However it wasn t until Lordy acquired a free bottle of jager that the real fun (or trouble for some people) started. As a couple of the boys were enjoying their free drinks security found the bottle and associated it with Hubble and Monty who were then pulled aside for questioning. The police who just happened to be in the nightclub also joined in with the questioning. Hubble sat there with the worried look of a man who was about to have their visa cancelled. In the end the free bottle of jager ended up costing Lordy $110 and all the boys were asked to leave the nightclub. Still everyone had a good time that night. Fines are coming along nicely we now have just over a $160 and a full board to collect. Their were plenty of fines from the golf day including JaJa for losing his clubs before the first tee and Lordy for not hitting the ball past the ladies tee. A few boys have been fined lately for not taking a hat trick and they are Lordy, JaJa and Tony. However the fine of the week goes to Kman who has a picture of his boyfriend saved as the background on his phone. A few social dates to remember and we hope you can make it to all of them. Feb 4 th we have the sportsman s Feb 18 th we have the poker night TRIVIA QUIZZIA This season, each Log edition will include 5 When do it happen questions. 5 Page 5 COACHING CORNER BATTING STATEGY. The main duty of the batsman is to conserve his wicket as much as possible while trying to score as many runs as he can at a good rate. The aim is to try and keep a respectable run rate of about four or more runs per over which would result in a defendable total. In an ODI the batting line-up is such that the opening batsmen are attacking players. While trying to wear down the new ball they also try to make use of the fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs. The 3rd and 4th batsmen are probably the best in the team. Their role is to make sure that there is at least one batsman who has settled down and is scoring steadily and is set to play a long innings. This batsman also supports any new batsmen that come in and help them to settle in. The middle order consists of batsmen that are very steady. These batsmen see the side through the middle part of the match where they keep the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles rarely scoring a boundary. They help to lay down the foundation for attacking batting in the final 15 overs. The batsmen take more chances in the final 15 overs trying to maximize the run rate. The tail end batsmen are mainly bowlers who do not have much batting skills. They are encouraged to let loose and go for boundaries and as result they are known as pinch hitters. In a test match there is no haste to score runs. The batsmen take their time to settle in and try to score as much runs as possible. The opening pair are technically sound and solid. They wear down the new ball and try to stay on top of the bowler friendly conditions on the opening day. The next batsman in is also technically sound and should be capable of playing a very long innings trying to maintain stability at one end. The upper middle order are also capable of playing long innings. If a wicket is dropped nearer the end of the days play a fairly capable tail ender is sent in as the 'night watchman' to see through the end of the day without the loss of more wickets. If the batting team has set a good 1st innings total then in the third innings it will try to score aggressively to increase the total runs scored in as few balls as possible. This normally occurs on the fourth day. The opposing team is sent in to bat near the final few hours of the day. This tactic results in the team batting last having to deal with a high total and the bowling side having an ample number of overs to try and bowl out the batting side. If the team batting first has not managed to score a respectable total and is behind on the fourth day, then the strategy reverts to defence where the batsman will play extremely cautiously and bat out as much time as possible so that come the end of the 5th day the match will end in draw as the allocated time runs out.

Page 7 Match Reports - First XI Nunawading 185 def by Karrimuir United 5/271 (dec) Nick Hubble 68 Amila Mendis 37 Nick Hubble 2/56 Glen Scales 1/37 Travelling to Kerrimuir we lost the toss and were sent in quickly finding ourselves 3/38 a partnership with Hubble and Harro moved the score to 95 before hubble was out for a well made 40. Having then lost a couple of quick wickets again we were 6/111 desperately needing a partnership to reach a total. Again Sproule did a job as he has all year with Amila and the guys put on 56, eventually being bowled out in the 73rd over for 185. Needing to bowl well we were very disappointing and our score was passed with Kerrimuir 2 down in the 46th over. Kerrimuir then put on another 92 runs and sent us in with 24 overs remaining in the day. In 21 overs we lost 7/93 passing the score saving us facing another 3 overs and seeing off the outright. A really disappointing way to finish the game as there was no need to go at almost 5 an over, we again played stupid cricket yet managed to hang on. We now move forward to Koonung where we all need to show our team mates, club and ourselves we are willing to represent the club with a much stronger effort. Matt Meehan.

Page 8 Nunawading Cricket Club - Round Eight Match Reports - Second XI Nunawading 1/142 (dec) & 1/22 def Kerrimuir 64 & 97 Nathan Larkins 81 no Karan Chandra 4/18 Stewart Hamilton 34 no Neil Parker 2/4 Corey Ellis 15 Andrew Lord 2/18 Mick McKay 5/27 Will Dalton 2/5 Andrew Lord 2/19 Lost the toss and was asked to bowl which didn t upset me too much because I would have bowled anyway. Disappointing effort with the ball and in the field the previous game and wanted to right things first chance we got. Fair to say we did that and after the first 38 overs of the day we were tucking into some sangas and biscuits thinking about our innings with the bat having bowled out Kerrimuir for 64. Everyone did the job with the ball but most pleasing was seeing Mick Mckay charging in off the long run. Kman was able to take 4 wickets bowling straight and fast. We went out to bat looking to knock off the score, and then begin building a lead with our eyes on an outright victory. Stu and Nath batted well and scored quickly which enabled us to declare with 9 overs left and their batsmen facing a difficult period. Worth noting that Stu and Nath both remained not out on 30odd and 80odd respectively, the score at 1/142. No wickets taken in the 9 overs but left the field feeling very confident going into next week. The equation was simple..take another 10 wickets with enough time if need be to get the runs required for an outright. The bowlers did their job again, bowling stump to stump and making batsmen play everything. Wickets fell steadily, catches were taken and the chat was up which could be accepted given the situation of the game. They passed our score but only just, and we needed to go out and make 20 runs with 30odd overs to go in the day. We achieved the task 1 down and 30 overs left. Mick Mckay got 5/26. A brilliant effort to win outright, something that doesn t happen very often. Our focus is firmly on getting a home final and our first challenge is against top side the next game. One of the most enjoyable games of cricket to be a part of. Good work lads!

Page 10 Nunawading Cricket Club - Round Eight Match Reports - Third XI Nunawading 7/236 def Templestowe 188 Keven Rose meyer 115 Derek Clark 2/16 Derek Clark 29 RH Jason Cutrupi 2/30 Jason Cutrupi 27 The result shows we had a solid win but there is room for improvement. We batted first and made a competitive total. The highlight was a 156 partnership for the 2nd wicket between 4 batsmen. Derek twinged his hammy on 19, In the same over Jason got hit on the chin which led to extensive plastic surgery. Mitch then came in and contributed solidly to the partnership. The third wicket fell at 176 with 19 overs. Ideally I would have liked to go at least 4 an over. Doing well we could have put on another 100 to put the game out of reach. We only put on 50 so while it was good to get a hit for several bats, we need to be a bit more ruthless. Similar situation came up with the bowling. Max and Mitch got us off to a promising start. At 2 / 30 with their best bats out we should have pushed. But two catches weren't taken in 5 balls and a slogger took advantage of our lapses. Some of the bowling was not consistent enough either. We all are aiming for the finals so we need to lift. On a positive side there were some excellent fielding efforts. We were well led in that by Jason who added two runouts and a diving catch to his two wickets to show that no facial blemish was going to slow him down. Liam took two catches, fielded well all day and was unlucky not to get a wicket in the threes. So it was a good win but we need to be at our best in the crucial match coming up next round MoM Kev

Page 11 Match Reports - Fourth XI Nunawading 5/175 def Blackburn North 171 Paddy Mitchell 82 Dan Smith 4/39 Paul Bradley 44 no Mitchell Clark 3/43 Luke Croft 2/38 Another must win game for us against a team in the 4, it was win or our finals aspirations would be over. Bowling first our bowlers again bowled quite well, bowling line and length, which enabled us to set a field to one side of the wicket. Good bowling by second gamer Dan Smith, 4 wickets, 16 year old Mitchell Clark, another 3 wickets with great support bowling by Luke Croft, 2 wickets Paul Bradley none. Aside from 7 dropped catches, we bowled Blackburn North out for 171 and needed to bat 10 overs on the first day. Knowing that we had 10 overs plus 65 the next Saturday, I was not concerned about runs scored, it was more important to preserve wickets. After 2 overs we were going really well, 2-2. We finished day one at 3-34 and with a long tail, I was optimistic but cautious about what may happen. Paddy Mitchell and Paul Bradley batted with great patience and responsibility, respecting the good ball and punishing the loose one, and we adjourned at tea still 3 wickets down and still needing about 80 runs to win. I cannot remember the last time that 2 batsmen batted a session without getting out, not in D Grade anyway. After tea, Paddy and Paul were particularly harsh on anything that was there to hit. In the blink of an eye we only needed 30 runs. Paddy was out attacking for a tremendous 82 and there was still work to do. Rod Jones joined Paul and made 15 and leaving us with 6 runs to make with the tail and a tired Paul Bradley. Lachlan Smith playing his first ever game batted very well making 4 not out and ensured we made the score required without any additional slip ups. Our batting and bowling has really lifted in recent weeks which is pleasing, however our ground fielding and catching must improve. Our next game is critically important against Doncaster who are below us, while a couple of teams just above us play each other. IT IS A MUST WIN GAME Man of the Match Paddy Mitchell and Paul Bradley th wicket partnership

Page 12 Nunawading Cricket Club - Round Eight Match Reports - Fifth XI One Day ROUND 11 Nunawading 159 def St Davids Zac Dunlop 20 Zac Dunlop 3/6 Aaron Willan 50 Tony Donlon 3/31 Aaron Willan 2/20 M.O.M - Aaron Willan Coming in to Round 11, the one day side had shown exemplary discipline in their preparations. A substantial portion of the team were present for a motivating training session during the week; one which culminated in a series of specialized nets sessions, and a pivotal group talk where everyone spoke openly of their hopes and expectations for the remainder of the year. Given this, and the added possibilty of finals action, incentive had never been higher coming in to a crucial clash with St Davids - 2 points above us in 3rd. Bowling first, to an opening pair we knew were dangerous, we started perfectly. Superb opening spells by Tony and Aaron, followed by Suchy and Simon, brought crucial early breakthroughs; the former pair drawing edges with tidy outswing, the latter applying pressure with the keeper up, and by the 20 over break we had the opposition 4/78 and on the back foot. The theme going onwards was to continue what we had started in the right manner; and though Grant was unlucky, Zac was once again a secret weapon - destroying the middle order, including the crucial wicket of the opposition captain with an LBW he might have pinched from Hilfenhaus. The quick men returned and tidied up the tail efficiently, giving us a manageable target. Special mention must be made of the fielding throughout, by the entire unit - efforts by Jim, Tony, Simon, Zac and Aaron particularly memorable. Chasing 150 we were confident, yet diligent, in our intended focus. Darren, Jenks and Dyl all started well but put pressure on the side when dismissed cheaply. At 3/36, Zac and Aaron came together and began to consolidate. They were measured in their approach as they each sought to build an innings, and as the tide began to turn they got on top - repeatedly frustrating the bowlers by dismissing decent deliveries to the boundary. Aaron carried on in dashing form, while Zac's only mistake was the faintest of edges which broke the partnership, but not before they had amassed 78 as a pair. Jim bunkered down and protected his wicket, and when Aaron was dismissed just after reaching his dominant half century we were still well placed. Two wickets then fell in the same over, putting pressure on the tail; but Suchy and Grant were disciplined, if not injured, paving the way for Tony to come in and seal the win with a couple of clean hits. We now sit 3rd, and next week face Templestowe at home, with the incentive remaining - winners are grinners and staying in 3rd gives us a great finals draw. Get to training, get involved, get up and about - there's an awesome vibe in this team. Well done boys. =
