4 >>From e Cricket Club Newsletter 4 >>Captain s Colum n- Sam Wheeler It was always going to be a tough season for the club following the unprecedented success of 2014; however the club and players will undoubtedly be much stronger for the experience. The First XI - with a bit of help from a restructure - maintained their status at tier three of the West of England Premier League. With many teams joining from the level below in 2015 the Firsts should be well-positioned to compete at the top end of the division during As many of the players approach their prime and with a years experience at a higher level under their belt the side will be confident of an improved showing next summer. The seconds also suffered a difficult summer, finishing towards the bottom of their respective division meaning they'll end of in Division Four of the Somerset Cricket League. Having seen several of their more promising prospects move onto first team cricket the twos still managed to enjoyed some strong performances and wins, however life was tough in a league with many quality sides. They were still able to blood several other players from the club's youth section which is encouraging for The club will have to work hard during the off season to find a replacement for skipper Josh Cantrell who stands down after four year of outstanding service. The Thirds enjoyed an excellent season under 18-year-old Mark Watts, winning the title with a side of largely youth players. Some excellent performances with bat and ball from almost all of the young side on occasions helped them to a deserved league title. Finally the club says goodbye to its overseas pro Alex Bleakley after October's presentation evening. Alex has enjoyed unbelievable success during his time with the club and helped us achieve new highs. We wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do next.

8 >>From e Cricket Club Newsletter 8 >> Graham Barnes >> Frome Cricket Club President Graham Barnes sadly passed away in October Here, an article from the Frome Standard looks back at Graham s life: >> Touching tributes have been paid to a well-known Frome man who passed away earlier this month. Graham Barnes, of The Mount, who was president of Frome Cricket Club, died peacefully at home on October 17, aged 81. The grandfather-of-five, affectionately known to many as Barney, was born in Great Elm, the third of four children, in The family moved to Milk Street when his father Frederick took on the role of caretaker at the school, which Mr Barnes attended. He later went to Oakfield Road School and left at 15 to take up an apprenticeship with Butler and Tanner in In 1952 Mr Barnes was called up for National Service and served as a corporal. Once he had completed his service he returned to Butler and Tanner to finish his apprenticeship and spent the next 25 years with the printing firm. Mr Barnes met his wife of 54 years, Carole, at the South Parade Club in 1960 and the couple married a year later at the Holy Trinity Church. They set up home in Gentle Street and went on to have two daughters, Karen and Nicola. During his time at Butler and Tanner Mr Barnes was a member of the Caxton Club and loved to play table tennis and skittles. The family were involved in cricket and football in Frome and spent many happy summers at Frome Cricket Club, with Mr Barnes being second team captain on Sundays and his wife helping with the teas and behind the bar. They even took over management of the bar in the 1980s, a time Mrs Barnes described as incredibly happy for family and friends. Mr Barnes was given honorary membership of the cricket club and was awarded with a plaque by Somerset County Cricket Board for his services to the club. When he finished playing football at Frome Town Reserves he became a referee for ten years and was also president of the Somerset branch of the Referee Association. Mr Barnes could often be found at Badgers Hill watching a home game. Before his retirement in 1999 he worked as caretaker at Frome College for ten years. Mr and Mrs Barnes would often holiday at Pontins, sometimes twice a year. In 2011 the family came together to celebrate the couple's golden wedding at the Assembly Rooms, an evening the couple thoroughly enjoyed. Described by his family as a well-respected man, his pride and joy was his five grandchildren, Jessica, 21, Joe, 21, Sam, 19, Ben, 17 and Tom, 15 and spent a lot of happy times with them growing up. The last game he watched at Frome Cricket Club he witnessed Tom take two wickets, which made him very proud. His godson, Colin Dredge, said: "Graham was a very well respected man and all the time I knew him, I never heard a bad word said against him. In many ways he was the backbone of Frome Cricket Club and very much a family man. He adored his family and was very proud of his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed." Mr Barnes's funeral took place on Friday, October 30, at Haycombe Crematorium at 11.30am. It was followed by refreshments at Frome Cricket Club. Family flowers only, donations to the cricket club. As a mark of respect Frome Town Football Club held a minute's silence on Saturday, October 18. >>Prim ary Partner of From e Cricket Club:
