1 Introduction Lord s Cricket Ground ( Lord s ), owned by Marylebone Cricket Club ( MCC ), is situated on St. John s Wood Road in Marylebone, North London and is a fifteen minute walk from St. John s Wood tube station and high street. Founded by Thomas Lord in 1787 as the home of Marylebone Cricket Club, the Ground moved to the current site in St. John s Wood in 1814 and is now the ultimate destination for international players and cricket fans alike. It is the Home of Cricket and the most famous cricket ground in the world. The Ground is steeped in history and charm, with extraordinary architecture and a fascinating collection of cricketing artefacts, paintings and memorabilia, including the iconic Ashes Urn. Lord s comprises of a seventeen acre site and it is possible to walk around the Ground on an even walkway and is wheelchair friendly. Visitors who are disabled or visually impaired can enjoy the experience of the Ground s atmosphere on match days as there are special arrangements to ensure the comfort and safety of these particular individuals. MCC is a member of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme. There are four large video screens, a public address system, hearing loops (in parts of the Ground) and free Wi- Fi to enable visitors to enjoy the game of cricket just that little bit more. The Ground has several excellent disabled toilet facilities that are located around the Ground and can be easily accessed via RADAR entrance keys from Stewards or Tour Guides. MCC is passionate about delivering equality to all visitors attending events at Lord s or going on a tour. MCC is continuously working towards improving standards, facilities and attitudes so that less able people can find a host of schemes to help them enjoy their visit to the Ground. Pre-Arrival Lord s is very close to the centre of London just 1.5 miles from Marble Arch and easy to reach by road, tube and bus. St John s Wood is the closest tube station (approximately fifteen minutes walk), and Warwick Avenue, Marylebone, Edgware Road and Baker Street are all within fifteen minutes walk. The chic St John s Wood High Street and the charming and tranquil Regent s Park are only a few minutes walk from Lord s, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants within easy reach of the Ground. St John s Wood is also famous for the Abbey Road Studios, a mecca for Beatles fans. 1

2 By train The nearest main line railway station is Marylebone, approximately ten minutes walk from the Ground. Marylebone Station is on the Chiltern line. Paddington Station is approximately twenty minutes walk from the Ground, for services to West and South-West England and South Wales. By road Euston and King s Cross stations are only a short journey away. The Ground is 6 miles from the M1 and 1.5 miles from Marble Arch. It is also close to the M40 and M4. M40 from the end of the M40 take the A40 (Westway). Turn Left into Lisson Grove. at the end of Lisson Grove, turn right into St. John s Wood road. Lord s is on the left. M1 from the end of the M1 take the Hendon Way, past Brent Cross Shopping Centre and over the north Circular Road (A406). Turn right on to Finchley Road (A41) and continue to Wellington Road. Pass St. John s Wood underground station on the left and the Wellington Hospital on the right. Lord s is on the right. Car parking and arrival Due to space restrictions, there is no parking on-site at Lord's on days of international matches, domestic finals and Twenty20s ( Major Matches ) or the three days beforehand. However, Westminster City Council offers parking close to Lord's. Q-Park St John's Wood is an underground car park situated near Lord s and The Wellington Hospital. Less than a one minute walk to St. John s Wood tube station, this car park is ideal to park and ride into the centre of London. The car park is conveniently located just eight minutes walk from the Ground. On days of Major Matches, a flat fee of 35 will be charged upon entry. To guarantee your space, you can now pre-book online for Major Matches at the following website Visitors can be dropped off by taxi outside the Ground on St. John s Wood Road near the main entrance, Grace Gate. Grace Gate is manned by security staff, who will direct visitors to the Museum entrance, which is where visitors can purchase tickets for a tour of the Ground. Prices start at 18 for adults, 12 for concessions and 49 for a family of two adults and two children. The Ground is accessible by steps and safety handrails with many parts accessible via lifts. Main Entrance, Reception and Ticket Office The main entrance is Grace Gate, which is situated on St. John s Wood Road. Security staff are on hand to direct visitors who require the Ticket Office or Reception, both of which are accessible by disabled or visually impaired people. Disabled people who use assistance dogs are welcome to bring them into the Ground and join the tour groups. Access into the very prestigious Pavilion can be 2

Access to the Museum is via automatically opening doors, which have a maximum width of 1340 mm. The Ground is level in reception and is carpeted inside with the entrance doors maximum width of 1370mm. There is a slight concrete ramp to the entrance of the Ticket Office with a smooth tiled surface inside the area to the serving windows. The entrance doors can be opened to a maximum width of 1380mm. Both Reception and Ticket Office counters are fairly low and user friendly and suitable for wheelchair users. The Ticket Office is fitted with a low counter, along with a PDQ system and hearing loop. There is a sliding grill through which to pass tickets and information and a push button bell to assist anyone who needs extra help. There is a large printed cricket fixture list displayed opposite the Ticket Office counter with additional information regarding duplicate tickets and a map of the Ground. Attraction (displays, exhibits, etc.) There is a small leaflet available in the Museum reception for anyone who would like to join a tour of the Ground. The leaflet describes the main attractions which can be viewed. These include the MCC Museum, including the Ashes Urn, the tour of the Long Room and the Players Dressing Rooms in the Pavilion, the Real Tennis Court and the J.P. Morgan Media Centre (lift door width of 780 mm) with its views from above the playing area and across to the Pavilion. In addition, the leaflet mentions the chance to purchase a memento of the occasion in the Lord s Shop, and finally the Lord s Tavern to enjoy traditional pub food with a 10% discount for tour visitors. Large format signs are displayed around the Ground to assist visitors, albeit you will be in the capable hands of one of the Tour Guides throughout your tour to guide you. Large prints of maps of the Ground are displayed around the Ground to assist visitors. There are no flashing lights to distract anyone during tours (with the exception of occasional fork lift truck movement) and there is no background music played on the public address system on non-match days. There are various wooden benches around the Ground for visitors to use as and when the need arises. The floor surface around the Ground is mainly a mixture of concrete and tarmac. The flooring inside the Pavilion is made up of highly compressed cork material, as this is hard wearing and better for when cricket players walk through with their spiked footwear. The Players Dressing Rooms are fitted with short pile carpets. 3

4 ACCESS STATEMENT FOR LORD S CRICKET GROUND The Museum s display cabinets and exhibits and fitted with spotlights and are evenly lit. The Museum s ceiling lighting is fairly even with spotlights, with a possibility of natural sunlight available by remote control ceiling blinds. Public toilets During tours, public toilets for ladies and gentlemen are available to use around the Ground in the following areas: Allen Stand, Pavilion and Full Toss. All can be accessed easily. The disabled toilets are accessible by RADAR key. The Tour Guide will be able to assist anyone who needs this facility. Lever sink taps are fitted to wash basins for ease of use when washing hands. Fixed grab rails are fitted inside toilets to assist disabled persons and emergency red alarm pull cords are installed to assist when necessary. There is a Public address system installed in the Ground, on which important messages are broadcast and which is audible in the public toilets. Catering There are two areas where refreshments can be purchased before or after a tour: (i) the Cricket Academy Bar, which has a selection of snacks and hot and cold beverages, and with an electric operated disabled person door which is 1100 mm wide, and a disabled lift door, which is 800 mm wide; and (ii) the Lord s Tavern, which offers traditional pub food such as fish and chips or sausage and mash. Tour visitors are offered a 10% discount when eating in the Lord s Tavern, which offers table service. Disabled wheelchair access can be gained by a concrete ramp outside the main entrance to the Ground on St. John s Wood Road. It has a maximum door opening of 1460 mm. There is also a disabled toilet available for use from within the eating area. The main flooring inside the Lord s Tavern is made up of large ceramic tiles with an upper wooden floored eating area and outside wooden decking area. Lord s Shop The location of the Lord s Shop is opposite the East Gate on St. John s Wood Road. The Lord s Shop has a few steps, but a wheelchair user can avoid the steps and go around them to get to the entrance to the Lord s Shop. The entrance doors can be opened to a maximum width of 1140 mm. The inside of the Lord s Shop is made up of wooden flooring and is on one level. The display racks are mainly all low level with glass displays in some areas. There is a roped queuing system before the tills so as to make it fairer and easier for everyone when queuing up to pay. The counter is low enough to accommodate a wheelchair user and there is no background music on non-match days. There are emergency fire exit signs above emergency exit doors and MCC staff are available to assist if necessary. 4

5 Ground and Gardens The ground within Lord s is mostly on a flat level and fairly easy to get around. The Coronation Garden is an ideal area in which to sit before or after going on a tour. There are various wooden benches available to enable visitors to enjoy the beautiful garden, trees and statue of W.G. Grace. There is a concrete ramp to enable wheelchair access to the Coronation Garden from the Museum entrance and can accommodate a wheelchair width of 1400 mm. The Coronation Garden is mostly laid with grass, but does have paths which are evenly paved with paving stones. Additional information All MCC staff are trained in fire evacuation procedures and how to tackle a live fire by using different fire extinguishers and will assist the disabled or impaired during an evacuation if necessary. There are various signs around the Ground to inform visitors of where to go and what to see. There are two sets of Barclays Cycle Hire docking stations outside the Ground on St. John s Wood Road for visitors who would like to cycle around London. The Danubius Hotel is situated opposite the Ground at 18 Lodge Road, St. John s Wood Road, London NW8 7JT for those who would like to stay overnight or take a short break.
