1 CTF Canadian Mixed Championships - April 25-28, 2013 (by Dan Tereck) The 2013 version of the Canadian Mixed Championships (CMC) took place in conjunction with CTF's Annual General Meeting, held in Winnipeg. Chateau Lanes was the host centre and once again, did a terrific job. The last time this event was in Winnipeg was in 2008, and at that time, Winnipeg achieved the record for the most ever entries in the CMC. Winnipeg held that record until 2011, when Kelowna surpassed it. Winnipeg's goal this year was to regain that record, but unfortunately, they fell a bit short, having achieved a total of 439 entries. CTF usually tries to schedule this event in conjunction with National Volunteer Week (April this year), which is a great time to recognize and celebrate the incredible efforts of all our volunteers. Canadian Tenpin Federation volunteers make a tremendous contribution in bowling communities across the country. They make our bowling communities resilient and our sport vibrant. Today, volunteers are involved in more ways than ever. Volunteers complete tasks from Smartphones, ipads and Laptops while waiting for squads. They operate and organize tournaments and leagues. They govern local, provincial, and national associations as board members and committee members. And the list goes on. To each and everyone of you, THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO! Rather than report on the results of the tournament here, we decided to focus on one group of bowlers from Alberta (there were 9 of them), who all by themselves, accounted for a total of 39 events (and 6 of those were team events!). And, they had a fair measure of success as well, cashing many times. I bowled my team event on Sunday, and was on an adjacent pair of lanes to one of the Kist Squad teams. They know how to enjoy themselves during competition, and that attitude was infectious, spreading to every bowler near them. I made a mental note to include something about them in our Connection article about this year's CMC. The leader of that group is Dave Kist, from Calgary (pictured here). Several weeks after the tournament was over, we started asking Dave some questions (who, what, where, when, etc.) to get material for the article. To our surprise, and delight, Dave put together a complete ready-to-publish article about "Squad Kist". And we decided to include it here, just as he had written it. Well done Dave! Go to: ************ It's All About the Schedule Submitted by Dave Kist Just who was Squad Kist and how could you tell them from other bowlers? They were the ones walking around with a folded up piece of paper, ask them what event they re bowling and out comes the paper, unfolded and the question - what day & time do you mean..yes, it s the schedule we refer to and it is Squad Kist at a glance. How else could you tell a Squad Kist bowler was nearby? Look for the Alberta bowling shirt, the high five s, the yelling hook baby, hook or the confusing hurry, hurry hard (what sport

2 are they playing anyway?), but the most tell tale signs a deck of cards for the poker pot and the laughter oh so much laughter & smiles yup, that s how you tell a squad Kist member, the fun and feeling of family.. Squad Kist was comprised of 9 bowlers from Alberta and members were: Dave Kist, Calgary Jenn Mckinnon, Calgary Jim Coleman, Edmonton (Formerly from Calgary and relocated for work, but we still love him anyway) Kyle Hubert, Calgary Lynn Dorey, Calgary Margrit Owen, Calgary Matthew Laframboise, Calgary Michel Habrun, Calgary Shauna Kirouac, Calgary Front Row: Lynn, Shauna, Jenn, Margrit, Michel Back Row: Matt, Jim, Dave Kyle Four of the squad members (Dave, Jenn, Kyle & Matthew) won the Alberta Provincial Mixed Championships and were each awarded up to $500 in travel expenses to represent Alberta at the CMC's. This team competed on Friday and placed fourth in the competition. From the 9 bowlers, there were a total of 9 singles, 20 doubles and 6 teams entered prior to leaving Calgary, there were an additional 2 singles re-entered while in Winnipeg. Lots of mixing and matching by Dave ensured squad members had the opportunity to cash each and every time he or she bowled. 3 Squad Kist went to bowl and bowl a lot - the squad entries were compiled by Dave Kist, reviewed by each bowler for agreement, then Dave completed all the paperwork and entry submissions. Bowl on Dave's squad & you are a winner is the motto in Calgary...The last 3 years Dave has become active in the sport again, soliciting entries, organizing squads, president of the only remaining Men's league in the city (which is also the only league with a wait list to get into it) and a director on the local city association. The Calgary city tournament has tripled in size, largely due to Dave and his increasing squad size. Earlier in 2013, Dave's squad was 10 of the tournaments 21 teams, 22 of the tournaments 42 doubles and 38 of the tournaments 70 singles entered in the FTA January one day event. Look For this tournament to be opened up to a two day event and to any and all sanctioned bowlers. Dave's motto - "just tell me your are in, I'll take care of everything else. All you have to do is pay the entry fee & show up to bowl." Tenpin tournament bowling in Calgary is growing each and every year...it all starts at the association level and there is some great support at the FTA board level, throughout the nearly 800 bowler association and in each of the three Calgary bowling centres. Further evidence of this is the Filipino and friends handicapped singles tournament, which posted a near record number of entries and the largest tournament size in the last 5 years Bowling in Calgary has become sort of a "family" event, with most of the 9 bowlers being good friends, sharing meals, anniversaries and birthdays together. Helping each other move, baby-sit and everything else that a family does together and for each other. And like any family, there's the usual amount of kibitzing, poker pots, high 5's and laughter. You ll clearly see this in some of the bios.

4 As Winnipeg was a real trek, a number of the larger family had to opt out, but Lynn did join Dave to compete this year and Marie also joined the squad as the official cheer leader, but was just a tad bit louder for her guy - Kyle. At press time, it is not known if Squad Kist will return to compete at the 2014 CMC's in Montreal, due to the distance and cost to get there, but a little birdie tells me that Calgary s FTA board is VERY interested and keen on bidding to host the 2015 CMC's and if that happens Squad Kist will be bigger and with more swagger then ever... Some high lights from the squad are: 21 top ten finishes 11 top five finishes Jenn Mckinnon 1 st 500 series Shauna Kirouac 1 st 500 series Matthew Laframboise lowest 3 game set of 521, just missed a 700 series by 2 pins and bowled an impressive 6,685 for 33 games or a average. Matthew was presented with a framed copy of his tournament scores (thanks to Stan May for providing them) on May 25 by Dave Kist at the Petroleum Mens league banquet. Lynn Dorey bowled her highest average ever Dave Kist persevered with a damaged tendon on middle finger of bowling hand (hurt during 1 st game of noon squad on Friday), had 5 frames in one game totaling 58 pins including 4 gutter balls. Thanks to Sherry of Chateau Lanes for medical tape and Lynn for a bottle of Advil, Dave was able to finish and the team placed 4 th Mixed Doubles Tie for 1 st by Margrit/Matthew and Dave/Lynn Top 4 spots in Team Events with: o 1 st Kist #6 Jenn, Jim, Lynn & Margrit o 2 nd Kist #5 Dave, Matthew, Michel & Shauna o 3 rd Kist #3 Jim, Kyle, Lynn & Matthew o 4 th Kist #3 Dave, Jenn, Kyle & Matthew Matt (L) being presented (by Dave) with a framed copy of his scores.

The friendship and support of all of our teammates is one to be commended I enjoy meeting up with friends that were made from previous tournaments, from all over the country. Bowling has allowed me to make friendships that wouldn t have been possible otherwise I look forward to many more tournaments, as well as continuing to promote bowling And an addendum from Lynn... We had such a great time at the CMC s and can t wait for the next one out West. Calgary seems like a wonderful place to host them, don t you think?

8 Dave has answered most of your questions in regards to our Squad, but I thought I would add just a wee bit: Squad Kist is a great name. Dave, aka, the schedule guy, is a wonderful organizer. Anyone participating in anything that he has put together knows that because Dave did it, it will be fun, organized and stress free. (OK, I might be a bit biased, but I m sure everyone will agree including the 2013 CMC committee). Dave also took care of arranging the accommodations and organized a group dinner for Saturday night at the Mongo s Grill, where a couple local bowlers joined us. Getting together for breakfast was on the schedule, and though some are not exactly morning people, once the coffee was poured and the teasing and laughter started, there were smiles all around. We have fun together and that is quite evident. It s also a chance to get together with our family and do something that we all enjoy, especially with summer coming and not seeing each other on a weekly basis. We are now in the process of organizing a CMC wind up BBQ, for the Squad Kist and families, at our place during the CYC s, where we will all be able to reminisce about our weekend in Winnipeg and plan our next event.
