1 Rugby 1 st XV Sport Boys Back Row L-R: Mr. Taylor, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Tate Third Row L-R: Brennan, Cooper, Boycott, Parkinson, Garbett, Ardron, Rigott Second Row L-R: Lockett, Douglas, Appleby, Moore, Wild, Beaumont, Widmore Front Row L-R: Toulson, Trueman The 1st XV, undefeated this season, has produced rugby of the standard expected of Hemsworth Grammar School. The play of both backs and forwards was excellent, with all the newcomers showing encouraging form. Of the more experienced team members, Appleby and Toulson deserve special mention, for their play has been outstanding. We reached the peak of our form just before Christmas when nine of our side were chosen to represent a South Yorkshire Schools' Team against a Huddersfield side in a county trial at Barnsley. The opposition included many fine footballers from the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, but we won fairly comfortably, 22 points to 11. For the School team, however, the highlight of the season was the Heath game, which ended in a draw after a spirited battle. Ilkley Sevens On March 29th a team consisting of Wild, Toulson, Trueman, Appleby, Ardron, Douglas and Moore represented the School at the annual Seven-a-side Tournament at Ilkley. 34 schools were competing, and the side gained distinction in this strenuous type of rugby by reaching the semi-finals. We were beaten 13-0 by Heath Grammar School, who went on to win the final. Brian Moore. UV1A Repeat Colours were awarded to: Moore, Appleby, Toulson and Pickering. Full Colours go to: Douglas, Ardron, Wild, Trueman and Garbett. Match Record 1st XV: Played 16 Won 15 Lost 0 Drawn 1 Points for Points against - 43

2 Rugby 2nd XV Photo and names supplied by Sid Kenningham. Thank you, Sid. Back Row L-R: Geoff Cartledge, Dave Nye, Ray Noble, John Smith, Peter Sell Middle Row L-R: Hickenbottom, Dave Ward, Billy Valentine, Mr. Tate, Tony Kelly, Peter Richmond, Phil Steele Front Row L-R: Frank Morley, Bob Vickers, Billy Bartle, Sid Kenningham, Terry Deeley, Melvin Snookes, Alan Cole The 2nd XV has had a moderate season only, but the side has frequently been weakened when players have been called upon for 1st XV duty. 2nd XV: Played 15 Won 6 Lost 9 Drawn 0 Points for Points against The credit for this season's achievement must be given to Mr. Tate and Mr. Taylor. On behalf of the players I would like to thank them for the great help, encouragement and advice they have given to senior rugger enthusiasts. I would also like all members of staff concerned with junior rugby to know that their work and interest are greatly appreciated. The teams are grateful too to Mr. Rhodes for taking such great care of the pitches, and to Mrs. Tate and the girls who helped her, for preparing refreshments.

3 Junior Rugby The Colts XV, the Junior XV and the new Under 12 XV possess players who clearly have the makings of fine footballers, and who, with the necessary experience and coaching, should do well. The Colts XV Under 15s age group Back Row L-R: Eric Bassinder, Edwin Anderson, Mr. Colley, David Wigglesworth, Keith Conway Middle Row L-R: Ron Hooley, Michael Kemp, Eric Eden, Roger Wilson, John Morrissey, Jeffrey Herbert, Geoffrey Vodden Front Row L-R: John Manifield, Ron Coggins, Edgar Matthews, Michael Cuthbert, Jim Atkins, David Hawcroft, Ray Griffiths The Colts have not had a very successful season, as the record shows. This is not entirely due to scarcity of real ability and skill; the team has frequently been weakened by injury, by players being given South Yorkshire trials and also by the loss of Tibble and Horner who left School. There was a pack of hard-working forwards led by the vice-captain, Matthews. His fine physique and ubiquity helped him to score many tries; he was also our chief goal kicker. Atkins had a good season and Kemp emerged as a capable hooker. Wigglesworth has made a fine scrum-half and gave good service to his fly-half and captain, Cuthbert. Apart from a weird passing technique which needs reform, the latter has played well and skippered the team sensibly. Hawcroft and Griffiths are making very useful centres and Wilson and Conway speedy wings outside them, while Hooley has done his best at full-back. The following have played: Backs: Cuthbert, Griffiths, Wilson, Conway, Wigglesworth, Hooley, Vodden, Herbert. Forwards: Matthews, Manifield, Kemp, Toon, Atkins, Coggins, Edwards, Bassinder, Eden, Anderson, Morrissey. Sheffield 'Nines': We failed to retain the cup, being defeated in the first round by a strong, bustling team. South Yorkshire XV: Cuthbert and Matthews not only played in the matches against Leicestershire, South Wales and Nottinghamshire but were selected as Captain and pack leader respectively. Match Record: Played 15 Won 7 Lost 8 Points for 132 Against 202

4 Under 14 XV Back Row L-R: Martin Rhodes, David Williamson, Eric Wildman, Michel Daley, Robert Field, Brian Pawson Middle Row L-R: Wray Vamplew, John Colley, Mr. Sale, Leonard Linsey, Geoffrey Allen Front Row L-R: Michael Conway, Robert Taylor, Malcolm Wilson, Albert Parkin, Keith Gainey, Norman Valentine, David McKenzie The team had a fairly successful season, showing promise in many of their matches of intelligent three-quarter play, though the forwards were often scrappy and lacked cohesive teamwork. The team started the season badly by narrowly losing to Wath and Wakefield. They were beaten later by Rothwell and lost to Wath in the return game. Soon afterwards, however, they defeated Barnsley 34-0, and went on to win their matches against Spurley Hey, Doncaster and against Rothwell in the return fixture. Parkin (captain), Bond and Valentine were the outstanding three-quarters, while Daley was prominent among the forwards. If the team can learn to play together in future, they may become a formidable side. Match Record: Played 11, Won 6, Lost 5, Points for 123, Against 95.

5 Under 13 XV Back Row L-R: Carl Byrom, John Taylor, Ivan Chaplin, Jeffrey Richards, Derek Woolley, Norman Tate Middle Row L-R: Anthony Benson, David Sugden, Mr. Swinbank, Paul Davies, Ward L. Front Row L-R: Neil White, Des Jones, John Harrison, Robert Farthing, Frank Ward, David Nuttall, Malcolm Cooper. The Under 13 XV, clearly feeling the benefit of their few matches together last year, have had a successful season. They have been well-led by Farthing at scrum-half but their main scorer has been Woolley, a strong running centre and a good goal-kicker. Richards, the leader and mainstay of the forwards, has received good support, especially from Cooper and White in the line-out. Sugden has had a good season at full-back and Davis has proved a determined runner on the left wing. The team has always looked better in attack than in defence: the tackling has been rather weak but on occasions the ball has passed well along the line of the backs. At other times, however, the passing has been head-high and passing on our own line cost us the game against Spurley Hey. We lacked the service of both our regular wingmen when we suffered our other defeat, 9-8 by Wakefield. Match Record: Played 8 Won 5 Lost 2 Drawn 1 Points for 120 Against 49

CHAMPIONSHIPS At this year's meeting held in Leeds on June 14th the School gained firsts in the Junior and Senior Pole Vaults. Griffiths won the Junior event against keen competition with a vault of 9ft.11in. (The School record is 9ft.) Snookes was the winner of the Senior section with a vault of 9ft 3in. (The School record is 9ft.1in) We congratulate them on their success. YORKSHIRE SENIOR (Men's) A.A.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS Held at Bradford on May 31st, this year was the first time that the School had been represented at this Senior meeting. In winning the 440yards from the previous Yorkshire Champion, Moore gave his best performance so far with a time of 50.9 seconds. Once again we congratulate Moore on his achievement and we hope that this will be the first of many successes for him in Senior Athletics. L.M.Tate

11 Boys' Hockey Photo supplied by Norman Hughes and Frank Morley. Thank you! Back Row L-R: Jim Evison, Graham Guest, Slater P., Mr. Losasso, Mr. Hamilton, John Abbott, Bob Brett, Sam Whitehouse Front Row L-R: Neil Sumpter, Colin Nye, Jeffrey Lockett, Eddie Hambleton, Porter, Ventom P.A., Norman Hughes The Boys' Hockey team was formed last year (1956-7) and during this season we were able to play our first fixtures with other schools. It has been difficult for all concerned, as practices and matches have often been cancelled or postponed because of bad weather and poor attendance. Our only fixtures this season have been with the Girls' X1 and Fulneck Boys' 1st and 2nd elevens. Out of a total of four matches-two against the Girls and two against Fulneck- we managed to win only one, but in spite of this we have gained some very useful experience for the future. The matches against Fulneck were especially rewarding, giving us an insight into the game and showing us how hockey can be played when it is played with skill. Boys' Hockey was not a recognised game at Hemsworth but, like true pioneers, we have worked hard and, in the fixtures with Fulneck, we have had some reward for our labours. All our thanks go to Mr. Losasso for his work and tuition. Next season we hope that the difficulties which face new teams will be left far behind, and that we will have a more successful season with many more fixtures. We are all looking forward to it! E. Hambleton UV1S

We began with eight regular team members: Cartledge, Sell, Morley, Hambleton, Kenningham, Trueman, Wild and Boycott, but were without the valuable services of last year's captain, Moore. Some of last year's members have not done as well as we hoped and many newcomers have been tried without success. At the beginning of the season we were without a regular wicket-keeper but Trueman has admirably fulfilled expectation. On behalf of the team I would like to express my appreciation to Messrs. Tate, Taylor and Sale for the time and effort they have spent in coaching the team; and to Mr. Rhodes for his careful preparation of our wickets; to Connolly for his work as secretary; to Sell for acting as treasurer, and finally to our scorer, Ackroyd.
