4 Technical Panel calls executed elements (determining Base Value) and any element deductions How IJS Works: Protocol Additional deductions may be taken by the Tech. Panel or Referee for falls, music or costume violations, etc. * Judges assign GOEs to each element. * A trimmed mean GOE is calculated for each element. * Judges assign the Program Component Scores * A trimmed mean is calculated for each program component.

6 Scoring Under IJS: Called by Technical Specialist Base Value Element Name (Block, Circle, Wheel, etc.) Element Difficulty Group Level (typically 1-4) based on number and type of Element Features executed Variety of Shapes/Configurations Travel Pivot Change of Direction Retrogression, etc.

7 Base Value determined from Executed Elements called by Technical Specialist Protocol: Base Value Base Values for all Executed Elements added together to get Base Value for entire program

8 Scoring Under IJS: Grade of Execution (GOEs) For each element, each judge assigns a GOE from -3 to +3 (---/--/-/0/+/++/+++) GOE is not related to element difficulty or features; it is a statement of how well the element is performed, regardless of difficulty ISU 1529 Grade of Execution Charts Guideline for determining base GOE 1529 Appendix B GOE Reduction Chart Applied after base GOE obtained Lists obvious reductions: breaks, stumbles, falls Also details other possible reductions, for example: Poor Intersection Shape (pre and/or post) NHB changes axis

9 Base Value determined from Executed Elements called by Technical Specialist Protocol: GOEs High and low GOEs are thrown out. Remaining GOEs are used to determine mean GOE. Base Values for all Executed Elements added together to get Base Value for entire program

10 Protocol: Total Element Score Base Value + GOE + Element Deduction = Score of Panel SUM(Score of Panel) for each Executed Element = Total Element Score TES is equivalent to the Technical mark under the 6.0 system

11 Scoring Under IJS: Program Components Score For each Program Component, each judge assigns a score from 0.00 to Increments of different components are evaluated Skating Skills Transitions/ Linking Footwork Performance/ Execution Choreography/ Composition Interpretation

12 Protocol: Program Components Score High and low scores thrown out Remaining scores added together and divided to get trimmed mean Interesting to note that, in this case, one judge was consistently low, and another judge was consistently high

13 Protocol: Program Components Score High and low scores thrown out Remaining scores added together and divided to get trimmed mean All 5 trimmed means added together and factored to get Total Program Component Score PCS is equivalent to the Artistic mark under the 6.0 system

14 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Grow Into IJS Events The 6.0 system rewards similar skills and choreographic decisions as those valued under the IJS system Incorporating these features into programs for levels evaluated under 6.0 has benefits: Familiarizes skaters with skills that will be required of them as they progress to higher levels Helps develop successful feeder programs Prepares you to be an effective coach for IJS-level teams as your program grows Reduces the shock/frustrations associated with transitioning for coaches, skaters and parents

15 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Elements Add difficulty to basic elements Block Multiple shapes/ changes of configuration; pivoting Circle Multiple shapes/ changes of configuration; traveling; change of direction Line Multiple shapes/ changes of configuration; pivoting; retrogression Intersection More difficult shapes; back-to-back preparation and approach Wheel Multiple shapes/ changes of configuration; traveling; change of direction

16 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Elements Add transitions that mimic other elements required at IJS levels No Hold Block Maintain spacing and shape while unattached Movements in Isolation Incorporate freeskating elements such as spins for select skaters Moves in the Field Incorporate freeskating moves such as spirals, bauers, spread eagles, etc. for the whole team Pair Element Skating in pairs with various dance steps and holds

17 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Features Add features to basic elements Block Increased difficulty of steps, turns and moves throughout Circle Increased difficulty of steps, turns and moves throughout Intersection Increased difficulty of steps, turns and moves through point of intersection

18 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Features Design drills to help them execute step sequences or points of intersection Correctness of entry and exit edges Correctness of turn action Control of body during turn (no feet down!) Design drills to help them execute FE/FMs Correctness of edges Correctness of positions Sufficient length of time

19 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Execution Increased difficulty is meaningless without proper execution Require strict attention to counting/timing, arm holds, free foot and free leg position Personal Responsibility Each skater needs to know where they are in relationship to other members on the team Tracking, unison, line up, spacing all affect overall shapes Each skater is responsible for their own steps regardless of what is happening around them fall, etc.

20 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Components Improve Skating Skills Design drills for steps and turns focusing on clean and secure edges Drill both directions multi-directional skating Design drills to improve knee action Help weaker skaters come up to the level of the rest of the team balance in skating ability of team

21 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Components Improve Transitions/ Linking Footwork Stay away from telegraphed transitions Follow-the-leader line out of circle 3-Spoke wheel into triangle intersection Use a variety of entry and exits Do something other than just crossovers Crisp re-grasps and changes of hold

24 Using IJS Concepts to Improve: Focus on Components Improve Interpretation Choose music with an obvious beat Can t stay on a beat that they cannot find Choose age appropriate music Hard to interpret what they don t understand (also hard to judge what we don t understand!) Make sure skaters understand story line Movie night (soundtracks) Videos of ballroom dancers (Tangos etc)
