2 Mohawk Valley Classic Hosted by The SKATING CLUB of NEW HARTFORD Saturday, January 18, 2014 NEW HARTFORD RECREATION CENTER NEW HARTFORD, NEW YORK ELIGIBILITY: The Mohawk Valley Classic competition held in conjunction with the Mohawk Valley Basic Skills competition, is hosted by the Skating Club of New Hartford, and is open to all eligible skaters who are members in good standing of US Figure Skating or Skate Canada. Eligibility is based on US Figure Skating or Skate Canada tests passed as of December 8, 2013 (close of entries). Age restrictions are age as of day of competition. This competition is sanctioned by US Figure Skating (Sanction #41114) and Skate Canada and will be conducted according to the rules of US Figure Skating governing non-qualifying competitions as set forth in the Rulebook, except as modified by this announcement. Competitors may enter as many events per discipline as they desire, provided they meet the entry requirements. Skaters may skate UP more than one level; skaters may in NO case skate below their test level. For Freestyle, Short Program and Showcase events, skaters may compete at only one level, either as qualified by their test level as of December 8, 2013, or one level higher. Test track free skate competitors may compete only as qualified by their test level. ENTRIES: Entries must be filled out completely in order to be accepted and postmarked no later than December 8, The competition committee reserves the right to limit the size of each event, to cancel any event with less than two entrants (with refund of entry fee), and to combine or divide groups as necessary. Before canceling an event, the committee may ask skaters to skate up a level or skate an exhibition with judge s critique if they are the only competitor in a given level. A skater electing to exhibit will forfeit return of their fee for that event. For all events where permitted by US Figure Skating, if there are insufficient entries to hold separate events, male and female skaters will compete against one another in a combined event. ENTRY FEES: FIRST EVENT: EITHER: $70.00 SOLO DANCE SERIES OR $50.00, ANY OTHER FIRST EVENT $30.00 PER PERSON, SECOND EVENT $15.00 PER PERSON, EACH ADDITIONAL EVENT $50.00 PER TEAM COMPULSORY EVENT $40.00 PER SMALL GROUP SHOWCASE EVENT $25.00 LATE FEE (must accompany late applications) REFUNDS: No refunds will be given once entries have closed except if the competition is not held.

3 FACILITIES: - New Hartford Recreation Center is located at 4 Mill Street, New Hartford, NY - Rink size is 85 ft x 185 ft, with rounded ends - Snack bar and dressing rooms are available REGISTRATION: A registration desk will be open throughout the competition, located in the front lobby of the rink; competitors should register promptly upon arrival. There is no admission fee for spectators. CANADIAN EQUIVALENTS: In all events, the following Skate Canada level equivalents apply. The following chart is supplied for your convenience. A closed marking system will be used. AWARDS: Medals will be awarded to the first THREE placements in each event at the announced times during the competition. Ribbons will be awarded to the fourth and fifth place finishers. Results will be posted and will be available for purchase at the registration desk for $0.25 per copy. MUSIC: Each competitor must supply his/her own music on CD for Freeskate programs, Short programs and Showcase each music item submitted must be clearly labeled with the competitor's name, club, event and length of music. CDs must have only 1 (one) track per CD. No CD-RW discs will be accepted. All music should be turned in at the time of registration and may be picked up shortly after the completion of the event. It is recommended each competitor have an extra copy of music for each event entered. Club is not responsible for music not picked up by the end of the competition. SCHEDULE & PRACTICE ICE: Available practice ice will be determined after the close of entries. A schedule of event times and practice ice times will be posted on our web-site or will be mailed to those competitors who include a self-addressed stamped envelope with his/her application. Practice ice - if available - will be sold at the rink on a first-come, first-serve basis only. Sessions will cost $15. If necessary due to ice and officials schedule restrictions, the SOLO DANCE SERIES events may be held on Sunday morning, January 19, All effected competitors will be notified as soon as possible if this should occur. ACCIDENTS: The Skating Club of New Hartford, its officers, and representatives accept no liability for damage or injuries suffered by skaters, officials, or spectators during this event. OFFICIAL HOTEL: The official hotel of the competition is the Hampton Inn Suites New Hartford, 201 Woods Park Drive, Clinton, NY 13323, Phone (315) When making your reservation, mention being a skater at the Mohawk Valley Classic competition and receive a special rate of $ per night. This special reservation rate includes breakfast and will be held until January 2, 2014.

5 FREESTYLE Skaters may enter EITHER the Well-Balanced Free Skate program or the Test Track Free Skate program but NOT both during the same non-qualifying competition. WELL BALANCED FREE SKATE Programs will be judged according to the well-balanced program descriptions as shown in the US Figure Skating Rulebook. Skaters may skate at their test level OR up one level. Jumps with not more than one rotation (no Axels). Jump combinations and sequences are allowed. Maximum 5 jump elements. Two spins of a different nature, combination spins allowed (min 3 revs each and no flying spins). Connecting moves and steps should be demonstrated throughout the program. Jumps with not more than one rotation (no Axels). Jump combinations and sequences are allowed. Maximum 5 jump elements. Two spins in any position (min 3 revs), one must be a combination spin with change of foot optional (min 3 revs on each foot or 6 total revs and no flying spins). May include flying spins. One step sequence straight line, circular, or serpentine fully utilizing ice surface. Any single jumps. Double jumps may only be the double Salchow, double toe loop and double loop. Jump sequences and combinations allowed. Maximum 7 jumping elements for men and 6 for ladies. Three spins in any position (min 6 revs), one must be a combination spin with at least one change of foot (min 5 revs on each foot). May include flying spins. One step or spiral sequence (see rule 3660 for description). Max. 8 jumping elements for men and 7 for ladies which must include one series of one or more non-listed jump(s) and one double jump. The non-listed jump(s) will precede the double jump while maintaining the cadence of the jumping rhythm. Nonlisted jumps may include but are not limited to: waltz jump, inside axel, half flip, half loop, split jump, walley, stag jump, bunny hop, mazurka, ballet hop, side toe hop, and falling leaf. Three spins: One must be a spin in one position, one a flying spin, (6 revolutions each), one combination spin consisting of all three positions and one change of foot (minimum 2 in each position and minimum 5 revolutions on each foot). One step sequence of advanced difficulty, covering the full ice surface. (See rule 3650) At least four different double jumps, one must be a double Lutz. Jump combinations and sequences allowed. Maximum 8 jumping elements for men and 7 for ladies. Three spins: One must be a spin in one position, one a flying spin (6 revs each), one spin combination consisting of all three basic spin positions and one change of foot (minimum 2 in each position and minimum 5 revolutions on each foot). Men: Two different step sequences. Ladies: One step sequence of advanced difficulty, covering full ice surface and one spiral sequence. (See Rule 3643(G) and (I) for description).

7 INDIVIDUAL COMPULSORY MOVES This event will be skated in the form of a free skating program, but WITHOUT music; minimum test qualifications are the same as for the free skating events. The required elements may be skated in any order. Mandatory deductions will be taken for any UNSPECIFIED or ADDITIONAL elements. Connecting steps are allowed, but such steps should be limited to the minimum necessary to link the various moves. FAILED MANEUVERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BE RESKATED. Program is limited to ½ ice surface unless otherwise noted. Skaters may skate UP for as many events as their test level allows. Skaters may compete in any category as long as it is not below his/her highest FS test level. 10 2014 U.S. FIGURE SKATING SOLO DANCE SERIES The Mohawk Valley Classic is a participating competition within the 2014 Solo Dance Series. The solo pattern dance events are being offered as part of the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Solo Dance Series and will be conducted in accordance with the 2014 Solo Dance Series Handbook found at Please refer to the 2014 Solo Dance Series handbook for the current Series rules, test levels and event requirements that will be in effect for this competition. 11 MEYDA Tiffany SOLO SHOWCASE Skaters will present a performance which will be judged solely on theatrical and artistic qualities from an entertainment standpoint. Technical skating skill and difficulty are not specifically marked. However, skating must be the MAJOR element of the performance and of sufficient competence to support the components chosen. Vocal music is permitted. Qualifications for initial rounds of showcase are the same as for the free skating events. Skaters may enter only one Solo Showcase category. Each level can include men or ladies. Judge panel may be composed of USFSA judges and / or interested individuals from the community. Skaters will be judged in the following areas: 1. Choreography Arrangement of steps, jumps, spins, etc 2. Music Interpretation Expression of mood/theme of music 3. Audience Appeal Response 4. Technical Merit Style, flow, and confidence of performance 5. Overall Performance Costumes receive no mark; however, they should be appropriate for the performance as they may improve or diminish the performance and thus have an effect on the overall marking. DO NOT use feathers, dangling beads, or other materials that may come off a costume during the performance. Props should be small enough that the skater can bring them on/off the ice themselves (without assistance) in a single trip. The referee has the right to disallow any costume or prop as inappropriate. Times listed are suggested performance times; there is no minimum time. If a performance exceeds the suggested time by more than 10 seconds, that portion in excess will not be marked and a time penalty will be assessed. Timing starts with the first motion of the body. Events will be divided by dramatic/artistic and character/comedy if registrations permit. Please include a short title or description of your program on the registration form. Skaters finishing 1 st and 2 nd at each level will be invited to re-skate their program in a Championship round. First and Second place finishers in the Championship round will be awarded Meyda Tiffany trophies. Medals and ribbons will be awarded for both initial and Championship rounds. Skaters in events with two or fewer competitors will move directly to the Championship round. First through fourth place finishers in these events will qualify to compete at the 2014 National Showcase Competition.
