May 30, 2015, 7 p.m. PROGRAMME Very likely a time-honoured pickup line of Clan Bond in chilly Glen Coe 1 8 All turn opposite partner RH, all turn own partner LH ¾ into promenade hold (men on inside facing anticlockwise) 9 16 Both couples promenade LSh round each other to original places Both couples dance Ladies Chain All Advance and Retire, all advance 3 steps passing opposite partner RSh and retire 1 step It is hard to decide which Bond girl to dedicate a dance to 1 8 1s+2s+3s set and cross RH, then (as in Muirland Willie) 1s lead down to 3rd place, cross and cast to 2nd place while 2s set and cross to 3rd place while 3s cast to top and cross RH s+1s+2s dance Reels of 3 on sides (1s dance in and up to start), finishing with partner in centre facing down s followed by 1s+3s lead down and 3s followed by 1s+2s lead back to top s+1s+2s dance Allemande If we remember correctly, lots of James Bond film scenes were shot at Pinewoods Studios 1 8 1s and 3s dance Double Figure of 8 round 2s (1s cast to start), 1s end in 2nd place back to back ready for Double Triangles (2s step up on 7 8) s dance Double Triangles to end facing 3rd corner (pstn) while corners set, petronella on 1 place to the right and repeat last 4 bars s dance ½ diag Reel of 4 with 3rd corners (pstn), pass RSh, repeat with 4th corners (pstn) L dances Reel of 3 across with 2s as 1M dances Reel of 3 across with 3s, both passing 1st corner LSh to start, 1s end turning RH to 2nd place own sides (facing out ready to cast) Clearly inspired by either the short story Octopussy or the film with the same name * 1 8 1L+2M also 3L+4M set and cross RH, 1s+2s also 3s+4s dance RH across to end facing partners on sides 9 16 All dance Reels of 4 on sides M+2L also 3M+4L set and cross LH, 2s+1s also 4s+3s dance LH across End couples (2s and 3s) set and cross RH to face down/up while 1s+4s dance ½ R&L, all turn next person on sides RH. 2413
A comment on From Russia with Love? 1 8 1s+2s dance Set&Link to end 2s facing 1s nearer hands joined, 2s+1s dance Set&Link with partners (2) (1) s followed by 2s dance down for 3 bars and change places with Lady dancing under Man sarm, 2s+1s dance up to 1st and 2nd places M+1M turn LH as 2L+1L turn RH, then 1M+3M turn RH as 1L+3L turn LH to end 1s facing 1st corners s dance Hello-Goodbye setting and petronella turn to 2nd place own sides Possibly in memory of Bond girl Mary Ann Russell, who in Ian Fleming s short story From a View to a Kill saves James Bond s life 1 8 1s set and cast 1 place, all dance ½ Reels of 3 across with 1s passing 1st corners LSh to start and ending 2nd place opposite sides 9 16 All Set&Link for 3, 1s turn LH to face 1st corners s dance ½ diagonal Reel of 4 with 1st corners, pass RSh and repeat with 2nd corners to end 2nd place own sides s+3s dance the Knot * But who needs Bond girls if they can have Airdrie Lassies? 1 8 All Advance and Retire, cross over passing partners RSh, Men making arches 9 16 Repeat bars s+4s turn right tulloch hold [4 bars] to end 1s facing down & 4s up in middle (L on M s right), 1s+4s dance R&L up/down [8 bars], turn partners left tulloch hold s+4s dance Ladies Chain up/down to end in original places s followed by 2s+3s+4s cast, 1s make an arch at bottom of set while others dance under arch to top Remember the golf match in Goldfinger? From James Bond s pained expression, he is not impressed with his surroundings he must be thinking of another golf course altogether, overlooking 1 8 1s turn RH and cast off 1 place, 1s dance ½ Figure of 8 to the right (L up, M down), finishing facing 1st corners 9 16 All dance modified Corners pass and turn: 1s pass 1st corners RSh to 1st corner positions, dance back in and pass partner RSh to face 2nd corners while 1st corners turn RH 1 ½ to change places 1s repeat with 2nd corners to end on own sides (3) 1 (2) All dance Diagonal R&L s+2s+3s dance round partner RSh, all Advance and Retire for 2 bars (long steps), repeat with short steps
A Bond-themed ball merits its own dance 1 8 1s cross RH, cast off 1 place, dance down between 3s, cast up to 2nd place opp sides 9 16 Reels of 3 across (1L with 3s, 1M with 2s, 1s giving LSh to 3rd corner, ending on sidelines) M+3M dance around 1L clockwise while 2L+3L dance around 1M clockwise, 2s+3s ½ chase clockwise while 1s dance around each other clockwise (2) (1) (3) s+1s+3s dance modified Set&Link for 3: 2s+3s set without giving hands & link, repeat to own sides while 1s cross RH and cast to the right, cross RH up/down and cast to the right Break / Buffet There are plenty of those in the James Bond films 1 8 1s cross RH, cast off 1 place, dance down between 3s, cast up to 2nd place opp sides 9 16 All turn RH, ½ chase clockwise All turn LH, ½ chase anticlockwise s dance Figure of 8 on own sides, starting with a cross down (L) / cross up (M) Presumably commemorating one of Q s rare low-tech gadgets: the rubber duck on top of Bond s wetsuit in Goldfinger 1 4 Middle 3 couples start: 2s+4s (in a square) set and petronella turn 1 place to the right while 3s petronella turn into middle and ¾ turn RH to opposite sides 5 8 All dance: 2s+4s set and petronella turn to next place to the right while 3s petronella turn into middle and ¾ turn RH to own sides while 1s and 5s set and cross RH. (1) (4) 3 (2) (5) s+4s also 2s+5s (both end couples) dance RH across, chase ½ way round the set (4M and 2L leading) while 3s set twice and turn LH 1¼ s LSh Reels of 3 across (Man with 2s and Lady with 4s) to end in own places s+3s ¾ turn RH into middle, dance ½ Reel of 4 up/down, ¾ turn RH to end in 2nd/4th place From a highly informative website about the suits of James Bond, we deduce that a mess jacket is about the only kind of evening dress he does not wear, even though, as a MI6 commander, he is certainly entitled to. We suspect that the deviser of this dance wanted to comment on this curious circumstance 1 8 2s followed by 1s lead down the middle, 2s lead back up while 1s cross and cast up to top, turning in to face 2s in a line across the dance 9 20 All dance the Spurtle: 1s ½ Reel of 4 with 2s (2s moving up to 1st place at end of reel), 1s ½ turn partner RH to finish between 3s [4 bars], 1s repeat with 3s, finishing between 4s [4 bars], 1s repeat with 4s [4 bars] s continue turn to end in 4th place opposite sides, all set All petronella into centre and set, petronella to own sides and set
Do you need to ask? 1 8 1M+2M also 1L+2L set and change places on sides (Ladies RH, Men LH), set and change back with other hand 9 16 All dance reflection Reels of 3, 1s cross down to opposite sides to start and end back to back in 2nd place, facing own sides s dance Double Triangles ending in centre facing down (Lady on Man s left) s dance down between 3s, cast up on own sides, dance up between 2s, cast to 2nd place All circle 6H round and back One cannot resist the impression that the deviser of this dance kept watching the Bond Miss Moneypenny scenes (the only lady James Bond is growing old with together ) 1 8 1L+2M advance for 1 step, pull back RSh and cast round 2L/1M, then turn RH 1 ½ to end in each other s place M+2L repeat bars 1 8 but pull back LSh and turn LH s+1s set, pass partner RSh, face partner and cast away to opposite side, 2s+1s set s+1s dance Diamond Poussette We do not want to wholly rule out that one of the inspirations for this dance could have been the splendid fireworks display Bond and Tracy use to escape Blofeld and his henchmen in On Her Majesty s Secret Service 1 8 1s cross RH, cast off 1 place, dance ½ Figures of 8 (1L round 2s, 1M round 3s) to end facing 1st corners s set to 1st corners, moving left on 2nd PdB to between corners (as in Hello-Goodbye setting), 1s turn LH to face 1st corners again s dance ½ diagonal Reel of 4 with 1st corners to end facing 2nd corners s repeat bars 9 16 with 2nd corners to end 2nd place opposite sides (3) (1) (2) s dance ½ Reel of 3 on opposite sides (1M in and down, 1L in and up), 1s dance ½ Reel of 3 across (1M with 2s & 1L with 3s) There are, after all, other dance-inspiring men! * 1 8 1s+2s dance Set&Rotate: Set to partner, cast 1 place clockwise, change places RH with partner, chase 1 place clw s+3s dance RHA, 2s+1s dance LHA, 1s finish facing 1st corners s set to and turn 1st corners BH, corners leading open out into 4H round to left, 1s finish facing 2nd corners s set to and turn 2nd corners BH, corners leading open out into 4H round to left, 1s finish on sidelines
You cannot help but notice that in the films James Bond does most of his wooing in summer 1 8 1s+2s circle 4H round to left, chase clockwise ½ way to end on opposite sides (2s facing down and 1s facing up) s+1s+3s dance RSh Reels of 3 on sides s followed by 2s lead down [3 bars], 2s divide and follow 1s back to top [3 bars], 1s+2s retain RH and Men pass in front of Ladies as they turn under right arm s+2s dance Poussette James Bond is known for his consumption of Vodka Martinis, but he also has a penchant for Scotch and Bourbon! Hence our choice of dance but let s shake or stir things up by dancing the Bonn/Bond version 1 8 All circle 8H round and back 9 16 All set to and turn corners RH, set to and turn partners LH s+3s advance to centre and lead out through sides with opposite partner, cross and dance to opposite sides, turn partner RH 1 ½ times s+4s repeat bars All Ladies petronella 1 place to the right, all set, Ladies petronella to original places, all set All Men repeat petronella turns and setting back to original places All dance a Grand Chain once round (start with giving RH to partner) All dance Allemande anticlockwise Repeat bars 1 64 in Jig time For the Bonn/Bond version, in quicktime bars dance full Schiehallion reels Named after another James, in another time Extras 1 8 1s turn RH, cast to 2nd place, turn LH to face 1st corners s turn 1st corners, partner, 2nd corners, partner, to face 1st corners again s set to and turn 1st corners BH, set to and turn 2nd corners BH All dance Reels of 3 in 6 bars, 1s on opposite sides give LSh to 1st corner to start, cross back to own sides Conceivably one of the girls in Blofeld s Swiss mountain lair in On Her Majesty s Secret Service 1 8 1s dance in and cast to 3rd place, 2s+1s turn partners RH 1 ¼ to form a line up/down middle of set (Men facing down, Ladies up) s+1s dance Reel of 4 up/down ending with 2M facing Ladies side and 1L facing Men s side s+1s chase round clockwise ½ way, 1s+3s+2s dance Advance&Retire s+2s ½ turn partners RH, dance RH across ½ way, 1s+2s repeat
