Basic Skills Competition Entries: The competition is open to ALL skaters who are current eligible (ER 1.00) members of either the Basic Skills Program and/or are full members of U.S. Figure Skating and who have not passed a freestyle test higher than Preliminary. Eligibility: Eligibility will be based as listed below and as of closing date of entries (February 16, 2017). All SNOWPLOW SAM and BASIC SKILLS SKATERS THROUGH BASIC 6 may skate at highest level passed or current level and NO official U.S. Figure Skating tests may have been passed including MIF or individual dances. SKATERS IN OTHER EVENTS MAY SKATE AT HIGHEST LEVEL PASSED OR ONE LEVEL HIGHER BUT NOT BOTH LEVELS IN THE SAME EVENT DURING THE SAME COMPETITION. Eligibility will be based only upon highest free skate test level passed (moves in the field or dance test level will not determine skater s competitive level). Skaters will be broken into groups of approximately 3 skaters, by birth date. Males and females may, or may not, be placed in the same group. **Please note: If a skater competes at a non-qualifying competition on a Beginner or No Test category, then that skater must compete at the equivalent or higher level in a Basic Skills approved competition. Deadline: All entries must be postmarked or handed in at the rink no later than February 16, Late entries may be accepted at the discretion of the Competition Committee and when accompanied with a $10.00 late fee. Refunds: Entry fees are not refundable after the entry deadline unless and event is canceled. Test & Age: As of December 31, Admission: No admission fee will be charged. The public is welcome to attend. Facilities: The Massena Arena is handicap accessible. The snack bar will be open throughout the competition. The rink surface is 80 x 200. Judging: The 6.0 judging system will be used. Judges will be local former skaters, coaches, etc. Music: The music for all free skating programs must be provided on CD by the skater. CDs should be clearly marked with the name of the skater, event entered and length of music. Competition music is to be turned in at the time of registration. It is recommended that the skater or coach bring more than one copy of music. Vocal music is allowed. Awards: Everyone will receive an award. Awards will be presented to first, second and third places. Custom ribbons will be awarded to first through fifth place in the Balloon Kick Event. All awards will be made at appropriate times throughout the competition. Accidents: The village of Massena, the Massena Arena, the Massena Figure Skating Club, its officers and representatives accept no responsibility for damage or injuries suffered by skaters or spectators during any event in this competition.

Basic Skills Competition Event Descriptions: Basic Skills Elements Skaters will enter the ice on the Zamboni end for warm up and then proceed to center ice where an announcer will ask each skater to perform the listed elements. Coaches and helpers will be assisting skaters both in the warm-up area as well as during competition. Balloon Kick A fun event with emphasis on speed and control! Snowplow Basic 2 must kick a balloon across the width of the ice in a race to the finish line. Basic 3 Basic 6 must kick the balloon across the width of the ice, touch the wall and kick it back again. The first skater to touch their balloon to the wall wins. Team Elements Elements will be the same as used for the Basic Elements Event. Skaters will form teams with each person performing one of the elements. No skater may perform more than two elements. Teams must have no less than 3 skaters. Snowplow, Basic 1 and Basic 6 have a maximum of 4 skaters. All other levels have a maximum of 5 skaters. Teams will decide which skater will perform each element. Elements will be skated in listed order, each team will perform the same element when prompted by the announcer before moving on to the next element. Let s Make Some Magic Relay Race Teams of 3 skaters only will race to build a magic scene. One skater at a time will go across the ice with one piece of the scene and correctly place it then skate back across the ice to the team. Another team member will take a piece of the scene and place it correctly on the board. This will continue until the scene is complete. The first team to complete the scene will be the winners. Basic 3 and up will skate backwards to build the scene. Basic Skills Program with music Skaters work with/without a coach to develop a skating program set to music according to guidelines and rules set forth on the Basic Skills Sheet. See Music for CD labeling requirements. Free Skate and Program events Skaters work with/without a coach to develop a skating program set to music according to guidelines and rules set forth on the Test Track and Free Skate Sheets. See Music for CD labeling requirements.
4 EVENT: BASIC ELEMENTS: SNOWPLOW SAM BASIC 6 & PRE FREE SKATE Format choice of the host: Each skater will perform each element when directed by a judge or referee or have the option to perform one element at a time in the order listed below (no excessive connecting steps). Referee driven format examples: all skaters perform first element before moving on to the next and so on, or each skater performs all of the required elements before moving on to the next skater. To be skated on 1/3 to 1/2 ice. No music. All elements must be skated in the order listed. 7 EVENT: TEST TRACK PROGRAM Skaters may enter EITHER the Free Skate music program event or the Test Track free skate program but NOT both during the same competition. Competitors will skate to music of their choice, vocal music is permitted. The 6.0 judging system will be used for all Test Track events. Deductions WILL be made for skaters including technical elements not permitted in the event description. 0.1 from EACH mark for each technical element included that is not permitted in the event description. 0.2 from the technical mark for each extra or lacking element. 0.1 for any spin with less than required revolutions.
