1 AAU DANCE ~ HIP HOP RULES V.0419 Welcome to AAU Dance at the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games! All Dancers must register and receive an AAU Membership to compete at the West Coast AAU Junior Olympics Games. Application cannot be processed without membership. Registration and Hotel information available at JourneyDancesport.com Entry Deadline June 5, 2019 Hotel Deadline June 7, 2019 Hip Hop Dance Defined Hip-hop is a fusion of dance disciplines and cultural interpretations of a street culture ignited in Africa and redefined in the streets of the USA. A hip-hop routine incorporates many entities to provide a full rounded hip hop experience. Style, attitude, eclectic movement with a fusion of different elements of hip hop are all incorporated with themed routines. The most real hip hop routines showcase a variety of old school and new school moves and choreography conveying the character and energy of the street. Athletes may Register as Solo/Duo/Trio, Small Group and Large Group Age Groups: Age will be determined by the date the athlete is on September 1, 2017 Pre-Teen I (0-7) Pre-Teen II (8-11) Junior (12-15) Senior (16-20) Adult (21+) * Not available in AAU Junior Olympic Games Categories: Solo (1 dancer) Duo (2 Dancers) Trio (3 Dancers) Small Group (4-9 dancers). Large Group (10 + dancers) Elements: All Divisions must represent a broad selection of these elements of Hip Hop. Old School and New School Styles. Locking Popping Breaking Whacking Punking Voguing House Dance Party Dances or Club Dances (popular or trendy dances) ie; Na Na, Soldier Boy, etc... Krumping Stepping/Gumboot Dance Frat Stepping without music. *Dancehall Traditional dance and folklore are welcome and will be considered part of the dance routine but should be kept to a minimum.

2 Divisions: Novice Premier Advanced All Division Competitors and members must start the routine on stage together for a minimum of thirty (30) seconds and end on stage together for a minimum of thirty (30) seconds. Timing begins with the first audible sound (includes cueing beep) and ends with the last audible sound. Major time violation for ALL crews: Routine/music length that is more than 10 seconds maximum allowed will not be accepted and will be subject to disqualification. Novice Division A dancer can only compete in Novice one time. The routine s length for the Novice Division is one minute thirty seconds (1:30). A grace period of five (5) seconds, plus or minus, is allowed resulting in a minimum of one minute twenty-five seconds (1:25) and a maximum of one minute thirty-five seconds (1:35). Routine length that is less or more than allowed will result in a deduction. Junior Olympic Maximum Time Allowed: 2 Minutes includes enter and exit time. Premier Division A dancer may compete as many times in this level until dancer has won. After winning in Premier Division, the dancer must advance to next Division. The routine s length for Premier Division is two (2) minutes (2:00). A grace period of five (5) seconds, plus or minus, is allowed resulting in a minimum of one minute fifty-five seconds (1:55) and a maximum of two minutes five seconds (2:05). Routine length that is less or more than allowed will result in a deduction. Junior Olympic Maximum Time Allowed: 3 Minutes includes enter and exit time. Advanced Division A dancer is allowed to compete in this division an unlimited amount of times. The routine s length for Advanced Division is three minutes thirty seconds (3:30). A grace period of thirty (30) seconds, plus or minus, is allowed resulting in a minimum of three minutes (3:00) and a maximum of four minutes (4:00). Routine length that is less or more than allowed will result in a deduction. Junior Olympic Maximum Time Allowed: 3:30 Minutes includes enter and exit time. Advanced Division competitors are the only competitors that are allowed to include acrobatics, breakdancing, and other dance styles in their routines. ShowDance Solo/group/coupled dancers must submit appropriate music no later than deadline. Costumes and shoes must be pre-approved by costume check staff. Props are allowed during show dance performance only; must be pre-approved by deadline. Lifts are accepted Music must be between 1:28 to 3 minutes long. No cell phones on floor. No gum allowed on floor Not abiding by these rules once on competition floor will cause for 5 point deduction or disqualification. Dress code Dancers are allowed to be creative with costumes, any fabric, stoning, socks, and jumpsuits are allowed in competition and show dance, but must abide by dress code.

3 Costumes and shoes must be pre-approved by Dress Code Invigilator Attire may include accessories such as hats, caps, bandanas, gloves, scarves, belts, jewelry, etc. Removing pieces of clothing during the performance is permitted provided it is not offensive or out of character. Must be approved by Dress Code Invigilator. Discarded clothing should be placed outside the competition area and never thrown off the stage into the audience. Appropriate under garments must be worn by all crew members, at all times. Clothing too short and/or too tight will be scrutinized and may be deemed inappropriate especially for overexposure of certain areas of the body and/or age appropriateness. Body oils or other substances applied to the body or clothing that may affect the clean dry surface of the stage and the safety of fellow competitors are prohibited. Competitors may wear dance/stomp boots, street shoes, sneakers or athletic sport shoes. All footwear must have clean, non-scuff soles. Tap shoes, jazz shoes, certain high-heeled shoes, flip-flops, slippers and bare feet are prohibited. Costumes with foul language are not allowed. Shorts or spandex athletic wear must be worn under skirts and cannot be flesh color. No jewelry can be worn; earrings are optional. Hats and hair pieces are acceptable. Must be well secured to prevent falling off during routine. No Tube tops. Tank top straps for both male and female must be minimum width of 1 inch. Crop tops are optional if dancer is wearing high waist garment or opaque under garment. Wearing skin colored mesh is acceptable except under garments in breast and panty area must be opaque and a color other than flesh and may be covered by stones or beads. The band of sports bra or under wear seen through a costume will cause 5 point deduction. Music Solo/group/coupled dancers must submit appropriate music in MP3, MP4 or WAV 4 for may by no later than deadline. And submit a backup flash drive to Registration no less than one hour prior to performance time. The competition music must not contain (or sound like) inappropriate, lewd or offensive language. The event organizer has the right to refuse music with inappropriate, lewd or offensive language. Props Props are allowed during show dance performance only; must be pre-approved by deadline. Props allowed are those that are small enough to be held in one s hand comfortably, easily mobile and are an element of the attire and/or are related to the theme or nature of the performance. Props that are placed on the stage or sit on the floor such as chairs, ladders, back drops, set pieces, furniture, etc. are not permitted. It is highly advisable that competitors choose carefully whether or not to use a prop and to make sure the prop meets the requirements of acceptability to avoid a high-level deduction. : No live animals, liquid, fire, smoking, allowed inside the competition area. 4 10 PTS: Timing 10 pts 10 PTS: Relation to music 10 pts 10 PTS: Showmanship, team work 5 pts. Eye contact 5 pts 10 PTS: Overall performance Total of 70 pts. Scores: All Judges scores will be tallied Gold: (60-70 Silver: (50-59 Bronze: (40-49) Deductions and Disqualifications Disqualifications include: Failure to abide by dress code once on the floor such as: underwear showing through costume,, jewelry, etc. will cause for 5 point deduction for each issue or at the discretion of the Head Judge; may be cause for disqualification. Inappropriate language/artwork on costume: Disqualification Inappropriate Dancing: If a team or team member has inappropriate dancing- he or she or team will be disqualified. No Show: A Competitor or group who fails to appear on the stage and initiate the starting position within designated time. sixty (60) seconds after being called will be declared a no show and Disqualified Backstage Crossovers: Backstage crossovers are prohibited and subject to disqualification. A crossover is defined as traveling behind the stage to get to the other side of the stage, out of sight of the audience. Teachers are not allowed to instruct dancers on the floor (visual coaching). This will cause team to be disqualified. Deductions include: Incorrectly Exiting Stage: 5 Point deduction will be given. Groups and Competitors must exit from the designated areas only. Jumping or flipping off the stage is prohibited. Stepping off floor: 6 point deduction Forgetting routine: 7 point deduction Bumping another dancer from another team: 3 point deduction Falling: 3 point deduction Major Falls: a member falls from a lift or support that is unrecoverable or a member falls during the performance that is unrecoverable. Minor Fall: a highly noticeable, accidental error during the performance that is recoverable or A member stumbles, trips, or falls during the performance that is recoverable. Late Start : A 2 Point deduction will be given. A competitor who fails to appear on stage and strike a starting position within twenty (20) seconds after being introduced will be deemed a late start. Pre-Start: 2 Point deduction will be given.a pre-start occurs when prior to taking the start position; the crew demonstrates excessive introductions or displays for longer than ten (10) seconds after all group members have entered the stage. False Start: 2 Point deduction will be given. false start is a movement made by one or more group members prior to the opening signal/beep/start of music that causes the crew to request a restart. Grandstanding: 2 Point deduction will be given. Grandstanding is excessive post performance display or posing at the end of the routine. A deduction will be given.

5 Competition Details: Specific to the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games 2019 Competition Details: All of the Teams Entry s must be submitted complete, with AAU numbers, correct and with payment before Deadline. Registration per Athlete of $35 includes Admission, T-Shirt, Program, Pizza Party and Certificate. Event Entry fees to compete are $75 per Solo (1-3 athletes). Goup Entry Fees are $20 ea per athlete. ID: Each dancer may be required to show Birth Certificate with a current year AAU Membership Card Waiver of Liability: Must be signed by each Athlete/Parent or Guardian. Each dancer under 18 years old needs parent to sign the consent and Liability waiver form. Late Fees: Registration Fee after Deadline is $65 No Personal Checks: Money Order or Credit Card is acceptable. Registration/Entry fees are non refundable. All fees are non-refundable however we offer SaveReg an inexpensive insurance which may be purchased to insure the cost of Registration as well as travel expense. Inappropriate Dancing: If a team or team member has inappropriate dancing- he or she or team will be disqualified. Decisions: All decisions made by judges are final. Props: No props, live animals, liquid, fire, smoking, cameras, streaming, photos allowed inside the competition area. Props will be allowed in show dance but must be approved by Hip Hop Director. Changes: No changes may be made to entries after deadline. Teachers: Teachers are not allowed to perform with their teams and not allowed to instruct dancers on the floor (visual coaching). This will cause team to be disqualified. Schedule: Dancers and teams must perform at scheduled time. Competition Floor and Practice Floor are Wood floors Practice Time for Groups of 4 or more must be scheduled prior to Competition Day to guarantee floor time. Practice is based on first first come first serve in 15 minute increments. Sign up at Registration Desk.
