DESCRIPTION OF LEVELS OF REQUIRED ELEMENTS 2004/2005 The Ice Dance Technical Committee has revised the description of some Required Elements in its proposals to Congress. For the Season 2004/2005 the new description of levels reflecting such revisions will apply for all competitions and Championships. SETS OF RHYTHMS F IGINAL DANCE F 2005/2006 For all ISU Championships and International Competitions, both Junior and Senior, the rhythm of the Original Dance will be: Latin Combination Any 2 or 3 of the following: Mambo, Cha Cha, Samba, Merengue, Rhumba (as described in the Ice Dance Music Rhythms Booklet and Compact Disc 1995 ) and Salsa. Vocal music is permitted Duration: 2 minutes and 30 seconds (plus or minus 10 seconds) Guidelines will be published in due course VII. APPROPRIATE MUSIC F FREE DANCE Taking into consideration many critical remarks expressed after the Ice Dance events that took place last season, the Ice Dance Technical Committee is obliged to remind coaches and skaters to take care in selecting the music for their future Free Dances. Therefore the Ice Dance Technical Committee strongly recommends the following: While still allowing creativity, the music, according to the current rule, should be rhythmical. If classical music is chosen, it should be either transcribed for ice dance or be characteristic of dancing. Variations of tempo and mood as well as a balance between fast and slow parts enable the couple to develop the full expressive range of the program. In this way, the choreography of programs will be enhanced rather than being depressing, boring and/or monotonous. In addition, the music should be suited to the ability and maturity of the skaters in order for them to appropriately express its meaning, mood and character. VIII. MESSAGE AT REQUEST OF COACHES For practices more simple athletic attire should be worn. The tendency to wearing glittery event outfits is unnecessary as Ice Dancing is an Olympic Sport and it is an extra expense for skaters. 3 MIDNIGHT BLUES - CRECTIONS CLARIFICATION After the Midnight Blues was skated for the first time at the World Championships in Dortmund 2004 and as a result of input at the annual meeting of coaches, skaters and judges after the event, the following corrections and clarifications should be noted: 1. Correction Timing: Man s Step 3 Description p.130 (Special Regulations Ice Dancing 2002) para 1 last 3 lines should read: the lady skates two fast behind cross foot threes (steps 3a, 3b), turning on the last ½ count of beat 3 and the last ½ count of beat 4 while the man joins her as he skates his RFO behind cross foot three, turning on the last ½ count of beat 4. Corrections to the Swoop Section Description p. 131: should read: The Swoop - steps This section of the dance begins on count 1 with Step 10, a cross in front LBI for the man and an LFO for the lady in closed position. The man commences his long 9-beat step 11 on count 2, turns an RBO three on count 3, executes a front coupé-rfi bracket on count 4, a coupé behind on count 1 of the next measure; he then holds the RBO edge with his free foot extended back for 3 more beats whereupon he skates a change of edge, extends his free leg forward (placing his left ankle under the lady s left ankle while she is in attitude position) for 2 beats, and concludes with an RBI three on the and at the end of count 2 of the next measure. The lady, during the man s step 11, skates a right progressive (Step 11a), then an LFO front coupé three turn (step 11b) while he turns his bracket. For Step 11 c, after an RBO three turned under his left arm (on count 2 of the next measure) they resume closed hold. She extends her left leg backward, and as she changes edge to an outside, they assume outside hand to hand position (so the lady is now facing the man with both hands extended) and places her extended bent left leg behind her (across her tracing) in her attitude position (where his left ankle touches hers) for two beats (counts 1 & 2 of the next measure). They conclude this step with her RFO rocker and his three on the and between counts 2 and 3. On count 3 the man then thrusts strongly (in reverse outside hand to hand position) on to an LFO (Step 12) for his LFO three on count 4, while she skates a cross in front LBI and then turns her counterclockwise twizzle on count 4 as well followed by a very short RBO on and. Please note: Some men at World s added an extra 3 at the end of step 11. This is incorrect and would result in a deduction from the judges. 4 3. Confirmation re timing of step 19 for the Lady and Man: It is confirmed that the description, chart and diagrams are correct. After the Ina Bauer is concluded with the LFI3 turned on and, step 18 is skated on count 1, 2, the small LBI wide step on the and between counts 2 & 3 whereupon step 19 is commenced on count 3 and the lady s twizzle is turned on count 4, and they hold the edge after her turn for counts 1 and 2 of the measure. Hence the timing for step 19 for the lady is correctly listed as and for the man as 4 in the chart and the diagram. 4. Other Corrections Description p. 130 Tempo (top of page) should read: 22 measures of 4 beats per minute The Beginning Section steps 1 4, line 1& 2 should read: (reverse foxtrot hold) delete word backward The Concluding Section steps 24 26, 2 nd last line should read: in reverse foxtrot hold - delete word backward The Layover/Layback Section steps line 10 : After extended to parallel the line of the man s free leg add: Their body positions should also be parallel and they should be as horizontal to the ice as possible. 4

5 GUIDELINES F IGINAL DANCE SEASON 2004/2005 For all ISU Championships and International Competitions, both Junior and Senior, the rhythm of the Original Dance will be: Rhythm Combination Any 2 or 3 of the following: Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, and Charleston as described in the Ice Dance Music Rhythms Booklet and Compact Disc The Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep must reflect the ballroom character. The tempo of the Slow Foxtrot should not exceed 32 measures of 4 beats per minute Vocal music is permitted Duration: 2 minutes and 30 seconds (plus or minus 10 seconds) The following required elements must be included: Two different types of Lifts (but no more) which are appropriate to the chosen music one not to exceed 5 seconds and one may be up to 10 seconds Lifts not to exceed 5 seconds in duration: Lifts not to exceed 10 seconds in duration: - Stationary Lift - Serpentine Lift - Straight Line Lift - Reverse Rotational Lift - Curve Lift - Combination Lift - Rotational Lift One type of the Dance Spin (Spin or Combination Spin) but not more. Spin - Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot. Combination Spin - Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot, followed a change of foot for both simultaneously and 3 further rotations on the other foot and no more than ½ rotation on 2 feet during change of feet. A change of centre of rotation is not permitted. Combined Spins and Lifts are not permitted. Two Different Step Sequences a. One Diagonal Step Sequence executed as fully corner to corner as possible. The partners must maintain Waltz/ Tango and/or Foxtrot position only throughout. Separations are not permitted. b. One Midline (not touching) Step Sequence along the centre axis (midline) of the ice surface extending as nearly as possible for the full length of the ice surface. This sequence must incorporate difficult mirror and/or matching footwork and two sequential twizzles (two twizzles on one foot for both skaters skated simultaneously with up to one step in between, no stop(s) are allowed before and/or between twizzles). During this step sequence the partners should remain as close together as possible, so that distance between them is not more than 2 arms length, but they must not touch each other. During both step sequences: No lifts, spins, stops or pattern regressions are permitted. Small jumps of no more then half rotation are allowed. The Levels for Required Elements printed on pages 9 to 13 should also be taken into consideration in planning Original Dance programs. 5

6 IGINAL DANCE (Requirements/Restrictions) Rule 509 must be strictly observed with the following exceptions as underlined: a) Vocal music is permitted. The incorrect selection of music for the rhythms chosen must be severely penalized. b) Only music with a rhythmic beat may be used and the couple must skate to it and not to the melody alone. Two or three selections of music may be used. (If only two rhythms have been selected, one may be repeated even if it is a different tune.) It is recommended that the duration of each selected rhythm be approximately balanced in order for couples to show their ability to interpret different rhythms/music. Couples are required to list the rhythms chosen and the order in which they will be skated when registering their music for the information of the Referee and Judges of the event. c) The musical introduction to the original dance may be without beat or melody for a maximum of 10 seconds. d) The duration of the original dance shall be 2 minutes 30 seconds plus or minus 10 seconds. The time must be reckoned from the moment when one of the couple begins to move or to skate until arriving at a complete stop at the end of the program. e) Except during the required step sequences, the pattern of the dance must proceed in a generally constant direction (either clockwise or anti-clockwise) and must not cross the long axis of the ice surface except once at each end of the rink (not more than 20 meters from the barrier). Loops in either direction are permitted provided that they do not cross the centre axis. f) All steps, turns, rotations and changes of position are permitted provided that they are appropriate to the rhythms chosen. Difficult, original, varied and intricate footwork is required for both skaters. A program that relies heavily on the use of chasses and progressives (runs), posing and one directional skating is considered to be less difficult than one containing changes of edge, rockers, choctaws and other such steps and turns, and multi-directional skating. Small hops, toe steps, and small jumps of no more than ½ rotation are permitted. Excessive skating on two feet, by either partner or both, is considered as showing the inability to skate or maintain balance. However, 1 highlight for which one or both partner(s) are on two feet may be included (maximum duration 5 seconds). Repetition of any steps is permitted. Kneeling or sliding on two knees on the ice and/or touching the ice with hand(s) are not permitted. A program which is choreographed so that its performance extends to all sides of arena in preferable to one directed to only one side (judges side). g) Partners must not separate except to change dance hold, to perform the midline step sequence or the permitted stop(s) mentioned below or perform brief movements in character with the Charleston ( if this rhythm is chosen). Any change of dance hold must not exceed the duration of one measure of music. Separations at the beginning or end of the program are permitted but must not exceed 10 seconds in duration. h) There are no restrictions on dance holds, arm movements, handclaps and the like that are interpretive of the music. Brief Hand-In-Hand positions to express the character of the Charleston rhythm is permitted. j) After the clock is started with the first movement, the couple must not remain in one place (even if doing brief extra stops which are permitted) for longer than 10 seconds. After this, up to three full stops are permitted (maximum duration: 5 seconds each). Any choreography appropriate to the music selection (including a separation of not more than 2 arms length apart) may be included. Such stop(s) may not be included in the required step sequences. 6

7 REQUIRED ELEMENTS F FREE DANCE SEASON 2004/2005 The following are the Requirements for a Well-balanced Free Dance Program which shall apply to all events. The Free Dance Rule 510 and the definitions in Rule 504 should also be observed*. The Levels for Required Elements printed on pages 9 13 should also be taken into consideration in planning Free Dance programs. SENI LIFTS Five (5) Different Types of Lifts but no more selected from the following list: two (2) of which may be selected from those lifts with a duration up to 10 seconds. JUNI LIFTS Three (3) Different Types of Lifts but no more selected from the following list: one (1) of which may be selected from those lifts with a duration up to 10 seconds. Lifts not to exceed 5 seconds in duration: - Stationary Lift - Straight Line Lift - Curve Lift - Rotational Lift Lifts not to exceed 10 seconds in duration: - Serpentine Lift - Reverse Rotational Lift - Combination Lift Note: there are no specified lifts this season, but lifts should be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer or deductions will be taken by the Judges. (e.g. lady upside down split pose in undignified manner) DANCE SPINS Two (2) Different Types of Dance Spins but no more selected from the following types: DANCE SPINS One (1) Dance Spin but no more selected from the following types: Spin - Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot. Combination Spin - Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot, followed by a change of foot for both simultaneously and 3 further rotations on the other foot and no more than ½ rotation on 2 feet during change of feet. A change of centre of rotation is not permitted. SYNCHRONIZED TWIZZLES Two (2) Sets of Synchronized Twizzles as described below: SYNCHRONIZED TWIZZLES One (1) Set of Synchronized Twizzles as described below: The four different twizzle entry edges are: Forward Inside, Forward Outside, Backward Inside, Backward Outside, All sets of twizzles are comprised of 2 twizzles on one foot for both partners with up to 3 steps between Each twizzle shall be at least one rotation on one foot performed simultaneously (at the same time), Both partners must skate the same number of rotations for each twizzle, The skaters must travel across the ice during the turns (if the action stops they become spins). More twizzles may be added but shall not be counted: No stops are permitted before the first or second Twizzles. Note: there are no specified twizzles this season but variety of entry edge (including back edges) and direction of rotation will contribute to the variety of the program 7

8 F SENI JUNI TWO (2) STEP SEQUENCES selected from the following One in Waltz, Tango, and/or Foxtrot Hold only: (not Hand-in Hand or Kilian) selected from: Circular direction optional (clockwise or anti); utilizing the full width of the ice surface on the short axis of the rink; Serpentine - commenced at the centre (long) axis at one end of the rink and progresses in three bold curves and ends at he centre (long) axis of the opposite end of the rink; pattern utilizing the full width of the ice surface; One in Varied Hold (except Hand-in-Hand with fully extended arms) selected from: Midline -: skated along the full length of the centre (long) axis of the ice surface. Diagonal - skated as fully corner to corner as possible.. Both Step Sequences must incorporate difficult steps and turns and edges for both partners as defined in Rule 504 (twizzles may be included but are not counted as the required series of synchronized twizzles) Lifts, jumps, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, pattern regressions and loops not to be included in either step sequence Combined Spins and Lifts: Combined spins and lifts are permitted but are to be counted as separate elements: i.e. as one of the permitted lifts and one spin. 8

9 LEVELS OF REQUIRED ELEMENTS IGINAL DANCE FREE DANCE: The Ice Dance Technical Committee has revised the descriptions of some Required Elements in its proposals to Congress. For the Season 2004/2005, the following descriptions of levels reflect such revisions and a definition of the required elements has been included for clarification. These will apply for all competitions and Championships whether the New Judging System is adopted at Congress or not. It should be performed on the spot around a common axis on one foot by each partner simultaneously. A Spin that does not meet level 2 or 3 requirements. (Must have at least 1 rotation on one foot by both partners to be called a Spin) Requirement 04/05: Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot. Free Dance Senior: 5 different Types of lifts, of which 2 only may be selected from types e), f), g):(permitting them to be up to 10 seconds duration). Junior: 3 different Types of lifts of which 1 only may be selected from Types e), f), g): (permitting it to be up to 10 seconds duration). Maximum duration of following lifts up to 5 seconds lifts a), b), c) and d) a) STATIONARY LIFT b) STRAIGHT LINE LIFT c) CURVE LIFT A Lift that does not meet level 2, 3 or 4 requirements and meets element requirements for types a), b) or c). a) A lift which is executed on the spot (stationary location) by the lifting partner who may or may not be rotating. b) A lift in which the lifting partner travels in a straight line in any position on one foot or two feet. c) A lift in which the lifting partner travels on one curve (lobe) in any position on one foot or two feet. A further part may be added to the combo (such as a curve, or rotation) provided it is within the allowable time but will not be counted. * Examples of Difficult Pose for splits or variations thereof, full layback with arched pose, backward horizontal body wrap around partner, leaning out where only point of support are the legs, upside down combined with difficult hold, with hands behind back, balancing difficult position without any assistance of lifting partner etc. Must be held for at least 3 seconds. ** Examples of Difficult Position for Lifting Partner: on 1 foot, crouched (more than 90 degrees), in shoot the duck, spread eagle (straight legs or crouched), etc. Must be held for at least 3 seconds.(example of Simple Position: on two feet). ***Change of Pose : lifted partner changes hold and body pose so that it is a significant change (i.e., a photographer would produce two different photos. A mere change of position of arm(s) and/or legs is not enough to constitute a change of pose). LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4 SYNCHRONIZED TWIZZLES A traveling turn on one foot with one or more rotations which is quickly rotated with a continuous (uninterrupted) action. (if the action stops they become spins). More twizzles may be added but shall not be counted: No stops are permitted before the first or second Twizzles. Free Dance: No more than 3 steps between twizzles are permitted. (For the Original Dance Sequential Twizzles in Midline Step Sequence no more than 1 step between permitted.) 13 LEVEL 1 LEVEL 2 LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4 STEP SEQUENCES. a) CIRCULAR/ SERPENTINE/STRAIGHTLINE IN HOLD It is recommended that difficult steps and turns be distributed evenly throughout the sequence. From Requirement 04/05: Circular direction optional (clockwise or anti); utilizing the full width of the ice surface on the short axis of the rink; Waltz, Tango, and/or Foxtrot Hold Serpentine - commenced at the center (long) axis at one end of the rink and progresses in three bold curves and ends at he center (long) axis of the opposite end of the rink; pattern utilizing the full width of the ice surface: Waltz, Tango, and/or Foxtrot Hold only; not Hand-in Hand or Kilian. Straight line Midline or Diagonal Pattern in varied dance hold. (Fully extended Hand-in-Hand not permitted). Midline: skated along the full length of the center (long) axis of the ice surface. Diagonal: skated as fully corner to corner as possible. A Step Sequence In Hold that does not meet level 2, 3 or 4 requirements but meets the requirements for pattern and/or hold described above. Footwork for both skaters: Mohawks, Choctaws, Brackets, use of edges etc. Twizzles for one skater: Footwork for both: Rockers, Counters, Choctaws, use of edges, section of steps on one foot etc. Twizzles for both (Not necessarily simultaneous) More than 50% of footwork must be at level 2 for both. Turns: Some multidirectional More than 50% of footwork must be at level 3 for both. Footwork: completely varied & intricate for both: Twizzles, Rockers, Counters, Choctaws, use of edges, section of one foot skating* (incorporating Brackets, Twizzles, Rockers, Counters during one foot section; not just one foot skating and changes of edge) etc. Turns: Mainly multidirectional Variations of permitted holds are required. More than 75% of footwork must be at level 4 for both. * performing a long section on one foot without other level 3 steps will not qualify for level 4) b) MIDLINE Not-Touching with Sequential Twizzles (two twizzles on one foot for both partners skated simultaneously with up to one (1) step between twizzles) A Midline Not Touching Step Sequence that does not meet level 2, 3 or 4 requirements but meets the requirements for pattern. More than 50% of footwork must be at level 2 for both. Both Twizzles for both partners at least level 2 The pattern must extend along the center axis (midline) of the ice surface. More than 50% of footwork must be at level 3 for both. Both Twizzles for both partners at least level 3 More than 75% of footwork must be at level 4 for both.
