Introduction The men's Levels Syllabus is aimed at catering for medium to long term recreational gymnasts. All the elements and progressions are based on the Long Term Athlete Development principles (LTAD). The LTAD model is predicated on the idea that each participant s stage of physiological, mental/cognitive, and emotional development must be identified and taken into account when developing his optimal training, competition and recovery program. LTAD is inclusive: the principles which underpin LTAD are equally applicable to people of all ages and abilities whether they are participating in elite sport or recreational physical activity. There are seven basic developmental stages for an athlete: 1. Active Start 0-6 years of age Stage Zone Festivals Gym Games National Championships 2. FUNdamentals 6-9 years of age 3. Learn to Train 9-12 years of age 4. Train to Train years of age 5. Train to Compete years of age 6. Train to Win 18 and up 7. Active for Life - Enter any time MAG's Levels Syllabus is suitable for boys: 6 years and older; Who can commit to 120 to 180 minutes of moderate training per session 2 to 4 times per week; Who practice gymnastics year round and enjoy one or two additional seasonal sports; Who will be Active for Life The Levels syllabus conforms to contemporary gymnastics and includes basic routines and skills performed on all apparatus. It accommodates many gymnasts and coaches of varying abilities and with a variety of facilities at their disposal. This syllabus is progressive in the way that the physical conditioning and skills in one level provides the basis for the skills in the next level - a gymnast may progress to the next level once he is able to satisfactorily perform the skills in his current level. 5 Overview Expectations The average gymnast is expected to spend two years in each Level. Above average gymnasts are expected to spend one year in each Level. Layout There are no drawings of the FULL routines. Where possible, a drawing of the required element is given with each routine. Routine descriptions are very precise (and sometimes long-winded), but this has been done to facilitate good posture and aesthetic gymnastics performance. Where possible, the wording and terminology in the routine descriptions are as found in the FIG Code of Points (this should also facilitate cross-referencing). The difficulty values of the elements will facilitate the judging of a gymnast who is unable to perform an element, or leaves out a portion of the routine, or does not complete his routine. THE DRAWINGS SERVE ONLY AS AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE ELEMENTS IN ALL CASES WHERE THERE IS DOUBT, THE WRITTEN TEXT WILL BE CONSIDERED CORRECT. THE DIRECTION OF THE DRAWINGS IS ALSO NOT AN INDICATION OF THE DIRECTION OR FLOW OF THE ROUTINE the aim is to illustrate only the element itself. Age Groups Each Level is sub-divided into age groups in order to increase the number of competitive sections. The gymnast s age on the 1 st of January in the year of competition is taken. Coaching & Judging This syllabus contains a development structure to steer coaches into deliberately preparing gymnasts with the necessary skills to enable them to cope with the demands of competitive gymnastics. Gymnasts must strive to perform the required skills (elements) with excellence while developing the skills for the next Level. It is commonly accepted that good form and clean routines will be successful. To ensure safe, enjoyable and memorable experiences for gymnasts, the SAGF recommends that participants use the National syllabus guided by appropriately accredited coaches in affiliated clubs. All routines are judged as per the FIG Code of Points. Where special rules apply, this will take preference over the FIG rules, but in the case of doubt, the FIG Rules will apply. As a result, there are no deductions listed with each routine. The lists of general deductions and those specific to each apparatus will be found in the Rules section of the manual and the RSA Abridged Code of Points. The deductions mentioned in the Special Judging Notes are for clarification and reminding purposes only. It is very important that the gymnasts and coaches pay attention to the proper technical execution of skills. In this regard judges have an enormous impact on the development of proper technique by awarding credit for skills when properly executed and by deducting appropriately for improper technique. Such evaluation should only take place in the context of the FIG Code of Points - contemporary techniques should be understood and deductions should not be invented. 6 Prescribed Routines Element values & Routine construction The routines have been developed to include all basic elements, and should serve as a guide to coaches. The majority of the bonus elements in each Level become required elements within the routines of the following Levels. Each routine has been constructed to include elements (modified or otherwise) from all the structure groups as they appear in the FIG Code of Points. Level 1 Level 7 routines are judged out of 9.50 points and have the possibility of an additional 0.50 points in bonus for difficulty. The Difficulty value of each routine is the total of 5 elements worth 0 each, plus a bonus element worth The Execution value of each routine is a total of 5.00 points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the final score. Penalties are taken from the added score. D-score (5 x = 5.00) + E-score (5.00) = Score Penalties = Final score Level 8 routines are judged out of 9.50 points and have the possibility of an additional 0.50 points in bonus for difficulty. The Difficulty value of each routine is the total of 6 elements worth 0.75 each, plus a bonus element worth The Execution value of each routine is a total of 5.00 points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the final score. Penalties are taken from the added score. D-score (6 x = 5.00) + E-score (5.00) = Score Penalties = Final score Level 9 routines are judged according to the FIG Code of Points, where the difficulty score is made up out of the 7 highest counting elements (6 + dismount). The Execution value of each routine is a total of points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the final score. Penalties are taken from the added score. D-score (7 highest counting elements + structure groups) + E-score (10.00) = Score Penalties = Final score Bonus Elements The possibility to achieve bonus points exists in various forms: Modifying or upgrading an element (by increasing amplitude, strength or flexibility) Replacing an element with a more difficult element Adding an element Bonus elements or the bonus requirements are indicated in highlighted text between brackets within the routine description. Bonus points will be awarded when the bonus element is attempted and achieved without any single large error (0.50). An exception is on Vault, where the bonus is a stuck landing. This bonus is awarded if the gymnast lands completely still. Normal landing deductions apply, e.g. for arm swings and legs apart. Feet movement is allowed as per the Landing rules in the Code of Points. RSA Levels 1-9 Syllabus ( ) FINAL 6

General Rules Qualification/Specialization 1. Specialization in Levels 1-7 is not permitted at the Zone Festivals or Gym Games competitions. Gymnasts are allowed to specialize in Level 8 & 9. Level 8: minimum of 3 apparatus Level 9: minimum of 2 apparatus 2. To represent one s region at the forthcoming National Competition, gymnasts must score according to the requirements set by the MTC please refer to the applicable Table on page Gymnasts who are not ready on all apparatus yet may participate on fewer apparatus at Club and Regional competitions. Progression/Regression 4. A gymnast should only be entered into a Level for which he is suitably prepared to participate in safely. 5. The Level in which a gymnast is entered remains entirely at the discretion of the gymnast s coach, regardless of the gymnast s score or Level at previous competitions. However, a gymnast may only participate at the Zone Festival, Gym Games or National Championships in the Level for which he qualified at a qualifying competition. Competitions General 6. Only gymnasts who are registered with the South African Gymnastics Federation may learn, practice and compete the routines in the Levels syllabus. An exception is made for gymnasts registered in Region 5 countries. 7. All competitions will be judged according to the latest edition of the FIG Code of Points. 8. The rights, responsibilities & duties of gymnasts, coaches and judges during competitions are governed by the latest edition of the FIG Code of Points. 9. Competitions may be arranged by SAGF affiliated Clubs, Regions and/or Provinces. 10. Each Level is divided into age groups: ages are taken as at 1 January in the year of competition. A gymnast must compete in the youngest age group relevant to his chronological age. Example: An 11 year old gymnast in Level 4 may not participate in the year old age group, as there is an year old section more closely matched to his age. Please refer to the applicable Table on page A gymnast may only compete in one Level during a competition. RSA Levels 1-9 Syllabus ( ) FINAL 7

Warm-ups 12. General warm-up should be for a minimum of 15 minutes - not including grouping of the gymnasts. 13. Apparatus warm-up prior to the competition should be calculated at 1 ½ minutes per gymnast of the largest group per apparatus. 14. NO one-touch is permitted during the competition for Level 1-Level 8 routines. 15. The National Championships and the Gym Games have to be based on a Full Warm-up and then Full competition-principle. The Zone Festivals may be organized on a Warm-up & Compete principle. Apparatus 16. The height of the apparatus for the different levels & age groups appear in the apparatus specifications on page 11; also refer to the FIG Code of Points where applicable. 17. Supplementary mats, modified apparatus and starting aids may be utilized where permitted. 18. All mounts must be performed as per FIG rules, except where otherwise stated in the apparatus specifications. Competition attire 19. Gymnasts competing in Levels 1 to 3 must participate in a gymnastics singlet and short pants. Gymnasts competing in Levels 4 to 9 must participate in full FIG regulation competition attire. Long gymnastics pants, socks and/or slippers that are black or the darker shades of blue, brown or green are not permitted. Scoring 20. A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 1 to Level 4 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar. The sum of the final marks from all four apparatus determines the individual All-Around rankings in each age group. The winner in each age group has the highest individual All-Around score. A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 5 to Level 9 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Pommel horse and/or Mushroom, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar. The sum of the final marks from all six apparatus determines the individual All-Around rankings in each age group. The winner in each age group has the highest individual All-Around score. 21. The highest final mark for each apparatus determines the winner for that apparatus. 22. No ties will be broken. Appeals 23. Appeals are allowed. Only the Start Value of an exercise may be questioned. The appeal, together with R100, must be submitted by the Team Manager/Coach to the Competition Manager before the start of the competition in the next rotation. If it is the last rotation then the appeal must be submitted within 5 minutes after the end of the competition. RSA Levels 1-9 Syllabus ( ) FINAL 8

Coaches 25. Coaches must be formally accredited for the Level in which they wish to assist on the competition floor. 26. Coaches must be dressed neatly in the appropriate tracksuit and foot wear. NO SHORTS & PLAKKIES ALLOWED. Judging 27. If a standard element is attempted but not recognized and awarded, it may be repeated to regain the value (except for dismounts). Relevant deductions will be taken for extra swings, falls and technical and execution errors. 28. Should a gymnast perform a ZERO vault, as defined by the FIG, he may repeat it once with a deduction of 1.00 point from the Start value of the second attempt. No more attempts are permitted. 29. Execution deductions for specific skills may exceed a given skill s assigned difficulty value. A gymnast may, however, not receive less than the total of his D-score (which is 4.50 if he performed and was awarded for all standard elements). 30. Prescribed routines must be executed exactly as prescribed. The routine may, however, be changed from left to right bias in its totality. If the gymnast leaves out an element/ valued part indicated in UPPERCASE, deduct the assigned value of the element (from the Difficulty score). This does not apply to simple steps, turns or arm movements. 31. Where the floor exercise description states 2-3 running steps, there is no limit to running steps in these instances. 32. A deduction of maximum 0.30 per routine will be taken for non-value parts, or parts thereof, that are omitted/ added. This excludes steps to change onto the right/left leg and in cases where non-value parts have to be left out because of a bonus element being performed. 33. Gymnasts performing elements and turns to the incorrect side, which results in a change in exercise pattern/routine construction, will incur a deduction of 0.30 each time. 34. Awarding Bonus points: When modifying or upgrading an element OR Replacing an element with a more difficult element, the bonus element value will be 1.4 ( +0.5 for bonus element). When adding an element, the bonus element value will be 0.5. In the case of modifying or replacing a standard element, if the bonus element is not recognized and awarded, the gymnast may repeat the standard element for value (including dismounts). RULES SHOULD NOT BE MISINTERPRETED BY TAKING THEM IN ISOLATION, BUT MUST BE READ IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COMPLETE DOCUMENT. RSA Levels 1-9 Syllabus ( ) FINAL 9

Judges Rules General 1. All routines are judged using the Code of Points. A RSA-Abridged version of the Code of Points is available (the full FIG version is available from This version covers all rules regarding judging in general, judging as an E-jury member, and additional rules for the judging of routines. All parts regarding FIG rules on Difficulty and Start Value for Level 9 voluntary routines, as well as the complete tables with elements for each apparatus are excluded. These will be found in the full version of the Code of Points. 2. The Articles in the abridged version correspond with the same Article numbers in the full version of the Code of Points to facilitate reference regardless of which version a judge is using. 3. Regions/ Provinces wishing to present courses at the various levels must apply with the MTC Administrator. Courses must be presented by approved Course Leaders (facilitators) and are therefore subject to the availability of Course Leaders. Previous & Current Qualifications From 2017 onwards, all existing judges are required to re-qualify at the various Levels every 4 years. This re-qualification will include examinations. All judges, regardless of Level, are required to be registered members of the SAGF and must judge at least 6 competitions in a two-year period and 12 competitions each cycle to keep their qualification valid (average of 3 per year). 13 Level 1 Level 9 Routines All Level 1 Level 7 routines have 5 standard prescribed elements, indicated in UPPERCASE, plus 1 Bonus element indicated in [bold, in yellow highlighted brackets]. Performance expectations are indicated in light grey blocks on the right of the illustrations and contain valuable information for each part of the routines/ elements. A Bonus element can be a modification, an upgrade or a replacement of a standard element. It can also be an additional element that must be added into the routine. Please refer to General Rule nr.34 for how Bonus elements are to be judged. Please note the special block in which the Bonus is illustrated and where it is indicated on how to include the bonus element into the routine: There are no drawings of the FULL routines. ALL PARTS of the routine is evaluated by the E-jury for technical and aesthetic errors as per the latest FIG Code of Points. Execution deductions for specific skills may exceed a given skill s assigned difficulty value. A gymnast may, however, not receive less than the total of his D-score (which is 4.50 if he was awarded the value of all standard elements required). The Special Judging notes included at the bottom of each routine-page are specific for that routine. In case of doubt, the rules of the latest FIG/ RSA Code of Points apply and, where applicable, the benefit of the doubt is given to the gymnast. Level 8 Gymnasts may only perform elements for value from the specific Table of elements included in this manual under the L8 section. Level 9 Gymnasts may only perform elements from the FIG Code of Points for value. ALL Level 8 & Level 9 gymnasts (and/or their coaches) are required to have a written summary of their routines present at all competitions. NO Appeals against D-scores will be allowed without a written summary of the gymnast s routines presented to the Head Judge. Summary templates are included in this manual for easy completion by coaches (see appendix). A small circle under a picture indicates that the element must be held for 2 seconds.
