Thank you to the volunteers for making this event a success. A special thank you to the Organizing Committee: Debbie Rodger (Co-Chairperson), Lynn Valgardson (Section Hosted Evening), Jason Whiting (Transportation), Kim Mack (Sponsorship) and Danielle Shaw (Volunteers) for their countless hours preparing and ensuring the event was a success. I would like to welcome our major sponsors for the 2008/2009 skating season: PharmaChoice (Road Show), SGI Canada (Sask Skate / Sask Open); SaskEenrgy (STARSkate Championships & Grassroots Seminars) and SaskTel (Jean Norman Competition). Marilyn Inside: - Team Leader / Assistant Application - NCCP Level 1 Technical Phase 1 Application - NCCP Level 1 Technical Phase 3 Application BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenges return to Mississauga for 2009 and 2010 OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada announced that Mississauga, Ont. will host the 2009 and 2010 BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge events. The Hershey Centre will play host to both the 2009 event that will take place Dec. 3-7, 2008 and the 2010 event that will take place from Dec. 2-6, We are happy to bring the BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge back to the city of Mississauga. The city has welcomed the event and shown everyone involved so much hospitality, said Skate Canada CEO William Thompson. The Hershey Centre has proven from hosting in previous years that it is an excellent venue for holding an event of this magnitude and we are looking forward to the next two years. 1

This will mark their fourth time hosting the BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge. The city previously hosted the 2005, 2006 and 2008 BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenges. The Hershey Centre, the city of Mississauga and SMG Canada are very pleased to announce our continued association with Skate Canada and specifically the BMO Eastern and Western Challenge events, said Mike Hamilton, Hershey Centre General Manager. For the next two years some of the finest up and coming figure skaters in the country will call the Hershey Centre home. Since opening in 1998 the Hershey Centre has been home to a number of prestigious Skate Canada events and we look forward to many more in the future and to continue being one of the premier skating venues in the country. Mississauga will host approximately 500 skaters. Senior and junior skaters will compete to qualify for the 2009 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Pre-novice and novice level skaters competing at this event will aim to earn a spot at the 2009 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals. Waskesiu Resorts (306) Winter (306) Summer Calgary to host the BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada announced that Calgary, Alta., will host the 2009 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals. The event will take place from Feb , 2009 at the Max Bell Centre. Skate Canada is happy to bring the 2009 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals to Calgary. Calgary has always welcomed skating events and we look forward to returning for another great competition, said Skate Canada CEO William Thompson. This event is important for athletes and skating fans. It introduces younger skaters to competition on a national level and prepares them for the future and at the same time gives Canadians the chance to see the rising talent we have in this country. This is the first time that Calgary will host the BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals, although Calgary is no stranger to welcoming figure skating events. Most recently the city hosted the 2007 HomeSense STARSkate Championships, the 2006 ISU World Figure Skating Championships and the 2000 BMO Canadian Championships. Our community is thrilled to be hosting this national event in our recently expanded Max Bell Arena, said Kurt Hanson, Director of Recreation for The City of Calgary. Attracting high-calibre athletic events such as this to Calgary is part of the strategy within our Civic Sport Policy. These events are a boost for the local economy as well as our sport community. In turn, we're confident that Calgarians will make this a memorable event for all the athletes and their coaches and parents. The 2009 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals will bring approximately 250 skaters to the city all of whom will be competing for national titles at the juvenile, pre-novice and novice levels in 2

3 the men s, women s, pair and ice dance disciplines. Skaters qualify for this event through one of the 13 BMO Skate Canada Sectionals or through the 2009 BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge. Synchronized Skating Teams will vie for the 2009 National Titles in Oshawa Championships to Oshawa, stated Vince Vella, for Global Spectrum Facility Management in conjunction with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment at General Motors Centre. This is an event which puts the spotlight on world class athletes in an elite event. We are pleased to work with Skate Canada for the first time at General Motors Centre. Competitive teams will compete for national titles in the senior, junior, novice and adult categories. The top two senior teams will go on to represent Canada at the 2009 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, taking place April 2-4, The 2009 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Figure Skating Championships will also provide the opportunity for skaters in the Festival SynchroSkate Program a chance to compete at a national level competition. Festival teams will compete in the festival open, festival novice, festival junior and festival adult categories. OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada announced that Oshawa, Ont., will be the host for the 2009 BMO Synchronized Skating Championships. The event will run from Feb. 26 March 1, 2009 at the General Motors Centre. We are absolutely ecstatic to welcome the BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Skating The Weber BBQ Shop 1905 Quebec Street, Saskatoon (306) Skate Canada to recognize outstanding volunteers, coaches, officials and athletes at Annual Achievement Awards Gala (May 30, Ottawa, ON) - Skate Canada volunteers, coaches, officials and athletes will be recognized for their ongoing contribution to figure skating at the 2008 Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala and Banquet, which will take place tonight, Friday May 30, at the Delta hotel in Regina. Thirteen outstanding volunteers from each of the Skate Canada Sections will be presented with the Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence. These individuals efforts have produced specific, positive results both within and outside of his or her respective section. This year s recipients are: 3

Marnett Duthie - Cabri Skating Club (Skate Canada Saskatchewan) Roger Langlais - Skate Winnipeg (Skate Canada Manitoba) Ted Dodman - Thorold Figure Skating Club (Skate Canada - Western Ontario) Forrest Notwell - Terrace Bay Figure Skating Club (Skate Canada - Northern Ontario) Janet Faustino - Mariposa Winter Club (Skate Canada - Central Ontario) Christine Furze - Quinte Figure Skating Club (Skate Canada - Eastern Ontario) Madeleine Dumont - CPA La Pocatière (Fédération de patinage artistique du Québec) Gilda MacAdams - Oromocto Skating Club (Skate Canada New Brunswick) Vance Hazelton - Digby & Area Skating Club (Skate Canada Nova Scotia) Barb Mayhew - Kensington Area Figure Skating Club (Skate Canada Prince Edward Island) Tim Crosbie - St. John's Figure Skating Club (Skate Canada Newfoundland/Labrador Annie Barabé, who coaches 2008 World Bronze Pair Medalists Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison, will be presented with the Skate Canada Competitive Coach Award of Excellence. Barabé, of Sorel-Tracy, Qué., is a level 3 NCCP coach, and has been coaching for 18 years. This season, Barabé coached Dubé and Davison to a gold medal at Skate America, silver at HomeSense Skate Canada International, and bronze at NHK Trophy in addition to the bronze medal at the World Championships in Sweden in March. She also coached 2008 Canadian Bronze Men s Medalist Shawn Sawyer and 2008 Canadian Women s Bronze Medalist Cynthia Phaneuf. The Skate Canada Officials Award of Excellence goes to Doug Steele, of North Battleford, Sask. Steele has been involved in skating for 48 years. A former Skate Canada president, he is an International Skating Union Referee for Synchronized Skating. He officiated at numerous events this season, including the 2008 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships and 2008 Prague Cup International Synchronized Skating Competition. He has been involved in every aspect of figure skating as a skater, coach, judge and administrator. Winner of the Skate Canada Elizabeth Swan Memorial Award that recognizes an individual for their contribution to all levels of synchronized skating, is Hélène Gagnon, of Laval-des- Rapides, Qué. Gagnon has been involved in synchronized skating for 15 years. She is the chair of the Synchronized Skating Committee and has traveled the country promoting this aspect of the sport, while holding workshops to the skating community. Gagnon also served as team manager at the 2008 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships where she assisted Team Canada 1 and Team Canada 2 to third and sixth-place finishes respectively. The youngest award winner is the 2008 BMO CanSkater of the Year, Emma Nieuwesteeg. Six-year-old Nieuwesteeg, of Fernie, B.C., achieved stage 6 in the CanSkate system. Nieuwesteeg skates at the Fernie Skating Club. She is also a member of the Fernie Alpine Ski Team (FAST) in the ski racing program and won the silver medal at last season s FAST Championship Race. 4

5 (306) Representing the 13 Skate Canada STARSkate Athlete Award winners is Kelsey Anderson, 18, of Hudson Bay, Sask. Anderson has passed her three Gold Dances, Junior Bronze Free Skate, Senior Silver Skating Skills and Silver Interpretive tests. She skates at the Hudson Bay Skating Club and has been a Program Assistant for six years. She is currently working on her Level 1 National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).The STARSkate Athlete Award is presented by HomeSense. Also attending the awards banquet is Tisdale, Sask s Jocelyn LeBlanc. LeBlanc, 11, will represent the 11 Skate Canada Competitive Skate Athlete Award recipients. LeBlanc competed in the 2008 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals where she placed 12 th in the juvenile women s event. She finished first at the 2008 BMO Skate Canada Saskatchewan Sectionals. She is a Program Assistant at her club, Skate Tisdale. Marci Elliott is this year s recipient of the Skate Canada Club and Recreation Coach Award of Excellence. Elliott, of Belleville, Ont., is a level 3 NCCP coach and has been coaching for 18 years. She coaches CanSkaters, STARSkaters, and competitive skaters at the Frankford Figure Skating Club. She has introduced tools and training programs to foster sportsmanship, peer support, respect between skaters and celebrate in the successes of others. Skate Canada celebrates success OTTAWA, ON: (June 5, 2008) More than 220 figure skating delegates met in Regina, Sask. May 28-31, to celebrate the season's competitive and corporate successes and set new goals at Skate Canada 's Annual Convention and General Meeting. We have had a very successful season on the ice with three medals at the ISU World Championships, one medal at the ISU Junior World Championships and a world medal in synchronized skating, said William Thompson, Chief Executive Officer. On the corporate side we have had added four new sponsors this year and research has shown us that we are the number 1 sport in the female 35 years plus market in Canada. All these factors indicate that we are on the right track and have a bright future. A National Coaches Conference held in conjunction with the ACGM was attended by more than 120 coaches. The conference featured high profile guests and speakers including professional coaches Doug Leigh who is the first coach in Canada to achieve Level 5 NCCP Coaching credentials, Lee Barkell, coach of current world champion Jeff Buttle, national team coach Joanne McLeod, motivational speaker and coach Frank Dick and renowned coach/choreographer Sandra Bezic. Olympic Champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier were featured guests in the Theatre of Champions at the convention opening and took part in a question and answer session with the delegates who were thrilled to have the opportunity to see their heroes up close. At the 2008 Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala volunteers, officials, coaches and athletes were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Skate Canada throughout the 5

6 past year. The gala was hosted by two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Brian Orser and Olympic and World Bronze Medalist in ice dance Tracy Wilson. The Billie Mitchell Award, which is named after the first female president of Skate Canada and is presented each year to a member of the Skate Canada Board of Directors for outstanding contribution, was presented to Wayne Sutherland, from Newfoundland/Labrador for his ongoing work as a committee chair and security advisor at championships. Workshops were held throughout the day on Friday, May 30 and delegates were able to get first hand information on topics of interest including the minimum standards essential to ensure that Skate Canada clubs deliver the best learn-to-skate programs in Canada and an update regarding the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model for figure skating. In the association elections, Debbie MacMurdo of Charlottetown, PEI, was acclaimed as Vice President of Skate Canada for an additional twoyear term. MacMurdo has served a Vice President since 2002 and her new term will run until Four long serving volunteers were acclaimed as Directors for a two-year term running Former competitor and international level judge Leanna Caron has more than 17 years of international marketing and business management experience, Hélène Gagnon an international sales representative in power transmission from Laval,Quebec brings 20 years of dedication to the sport with special interest in the area of synchronized skating, Jo-Anne Phelps a special programs teacher from Toronto has been involved in skating for 30 years and Steve Scherrer a marketing and business development professional from Waterloo, Ont who has been on the Skate Canada Board of Directors since Perdue Oasis... "Jewel in the Crown" "..condition of the greens, fairways and Tee boxes...best in Saskatchewan" Making Dreams Possible online applications are now available The Coaching Association of Canada is pleased to announce that the General Motors Making Dreams Possible club coaching grant and high performance coach grant applications are now back online. Dedicated to supporting athletes at all levels through coaching excellence, General Motors Making Dreams Possible Program provides one hundred $2,000 club coaching grants and ten $10,000 high performance coach grants to community sport clubs and high performance coaches nationwide on an annual basis. In just its second year, this program has already impacted over 9,000 coaches and nearly 110,000 athletes in 171 communities across the country. This fall, another 50+ $2,000 grants will be awarded to community sport clubs across the country for coach training and development. The application deadline is September 26, High performance coach grants will be awarded again in February Apply now and make dreams possible in your community visit The Drive is on or Making Dreams Possible. 2008/2009 The planning for the 2008/2009 has begun. If your clubs wishes to participate in the program, please pre-order your ticket books by June 30 th. $33,493 was paid back to participating clubs. Skate Canada Saskatchewan arranges for all prizes, applies for the lottery license, prints the tickets and does the advertising. 7 Chico s Meat N Place (306) /2008 CAC Accepting Applications for Coaching Internship Program OTTAWA, Ontario - Service Canada is providing financial assistance for this project through the Government of Canada's Career Focus program, which offers financial support to employers and organizations to provide postsecondary graduate youth with career-related work experience in their field of study. Through this project, the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is offering subsidies of $12,000 to enable sport organizations to hire young professionals for coaching positions leading to permanent full-time employment. The deadline for applications is July 4, 2008, for positions starting August 1, To participate in Career Focus, participants must be: Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons on whom refugee status has been conferred; between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection; post-secondary graduates; out of school; unemployed; legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations; not previous participants of a Career Focus project; and not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. 8 Synchronized Skating Technical Workshop Attention all clubs with or interested in forming a Synchronized Skating Team all coaches and team managers / executive are urged to attend this technical workshop. There will be an on-ice session for coaches, so remember to bring your skates. All registered clubs will receive more information via Canada Post. Optional Dance Partnering Issue The Skating Programs Committee wishes to thank all coaches, officials and other interested parties who took the time to give us their thoughts and opinions on the questions we raised regarding the consideration of optional dance partnering for STARSkate tests. Feedback received indicates a clear divergence of opinion therefore no changes will be made at this time.
