1 Professional Skaters Association's Learning Management System Blended Learning Programs - Syllabus The PSA was established in 938 and has grown to a membership of nearly 6,000. PSA is the official figure skating coach's education, training and accreditation program for U.S. Figure Skating. Over 00 educational programs are offered to PSA's members each year and ratings exams are offered in ten disciplines to those members who wish to be certified in one of four levels from Registered to Master. Mission Statement: "Dedicated to providing continuing education and accreditation to ice skating professionals" in an ethical and safe environment. As a PSA member you have many opportunities to advance your knowledge whether it be from the comfort of your own home or traveling across the country. Our programs are intended to give you the most comprehensive base of knowledge by allowing you to learn through a variety of mediums. Below is a complete list of what PSA has to offer you! Learning Through Presentation and Interaction Programs Approximate Credits Schedule PACE Professional Accreditation and Certifying Education or "Practice Answering Clearly and Efficiently" prepares coaches for Oral Ratings Exams. This 3 day program features a Master Rated coaching faculty presenting on and office topics. Each discipline and level are offered based on interest and registration. -8 PACE/Florida January/February PACE/Indiana April PACE/Arizona August International Conference Nationwide Seminars State Workshops The annual Conference is a three day event filled with intense learning, technical updating, professional reassurances and social activities. Presentations are given in all disciplines both on and off-ice. Keynote speakers and special guests are highlighted. All written exams and Oral Ratings exams are offered. One () day seminars feature a guest coach presenting on and off-ice topics. Various disciplines are included and each year a sport science focus is highlighted. The 6 seminar sites are rotated each year. Half-day workshops are held in every state at various times of the year. Many are held office and include topics relevant to that specific state. Coaches are encouraged to communicate and learn from each other Held annually just prior to Memorial Day. Rotated tri-annually across the country. Held August through December in 4-6 sites across the country 4-6 Throughout the year - -
2 Programs Approximate Credits Schedule Apprentice Program Coaches College Apprenticing offers an opportunity to work under a Master rated coach to learn new skills and update current ones. Apprenticeship involves: on-ice observation of private or group lessons, on-ice lessons to improve teaching techniques and off-ice discussions of teaching techniques, music editing, training schedules, tests and competitions, parental interaction, etc. Apprenticeships are offered in all disciplines and at all levels. Certificates are issued designating the number of hours of study (minimum of 30 and adapted to the individual). The purpose of the coaches college is to provide education and information to selected developmental pair and dance coaches who have shown potential via the placement of their team(s) at U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championship. 8 Ongoing -4 April The hockey accreditation program builds stronger relationships between hockey, figure skating and arena management by teaching Hockey coaches hockey terminology, skills and drills; Accreditation, teaching hockey players to become better Level I, Level II and skaters; and creating a new type of ice session Refresher for the facility to market. The course includes off-ice and on-ice sessions plus a written exam is given and a certificate is awarded if the course is successfully completed. 3-5 May Conference PSA/USFS Sectional Sychronized Skating Seminars A one-day seminar for synchronized skating coaches with a track for parents and skaters. Presentations are focused on skills, building a stronger program, rule changes and updates. 7-9 Summer Learning Through Self Study Distance Learning/E-Learning E-Learning allows you to sign up for an educational course on our website. The course consists of written material followed by self-scored review questions. Answers to the review are given. You may go back to the course for up to 60 days after signing up. - -
3 Materials Credits Balance and Core Strength This course includes definitions of terms, suggested number of sets and reps from beginning to advanced skaters, exercises to improve balance and exercises to improve core body strength. Purchasing Information Learning link on the Bunny Hop and Waltz Jump This course includes both the bunny hop and the waltz jump. Both skills are divided up into sections on preparation, take-off and landing and a teaching exercise Camel Spins This course includes four sections: The forward camel spin, the catch foot camel spin, the curly camel spin and the back camel spin. Information on the preparation, the spin, the exit and teaching exercises are included Death Spiral This course includes three sections: the backward outside pivot, the pull spiral and the death spiral with exercises for both the man and the lady. Energy Systems This course includes five sections: Fitness Requirements of Skating, Cardiovascular Requirements of Skating, Types of Cardiovascular Training (Conditioning), Putting in into Practice: The Periodization Concept of Off-Ice Training and Program Components Overview. Group Instruction This course is a basic introduction to group instruction with information on teaching tips, traffic patterns, responsibilities, dress and safety. Jump Theory This course includes nine sections: Jump Basics, Jumping Progression, Preparation, Takeoff, Rotation, Landing, Biomechanics of Jumping, Quads and Tools for Learning Jumps. Mohawks This course includes eight sections: Basic Overview, Inside Open Mohawk, Inside Closed Mohawk, Outside Open Mohawk, Outside Closed Mohawk, Back Mohawk, Drop Mohawk and Swing Mohawk. There is information on preparation, the turn and exercises included
4 Materials Credits Salchows Sit Spins Spin Theory Materials This course includes three sections on the single, double and triple/quad Salchow. Information on preparation, takeoff, rotation, landing and exercises are included. This course includes three sections: A Basic Overview of Sit Spins, the Forward Sit Spin and the Back Sit Spin. Information on preparation, the spin and exercises are included. This course includes seven sections: A Basic Overview, Spinning Fundamentals, Spin Entry, Centering Spins, Arm Positions, Landing, Speed of Rotation and Exit. Books and Manuals Purchasing Information Purchasing Information PS Magazine The Professional Skater magazine includes a vast amount of information for coaches including columns on Ratings, Sports Science, Education, Hockey, Synchronized Team Skating, Ethics and Legal Issues. The magazine also offers information on classified ads, current news, a Job Placement Service, a PSA Calendar of Events, competitions and much more. Published bi-monthly Free with membership Coaches Manual An essential guide for coaches that outlines Selecting your Specialty, the First Day on the Job, Creative Teaching Ideas, Off-ice Training, Choosing the Right Boot and Blade, Editing Music, MIF Diagrams and much more. Moves in the Field Booklet The complete MIF booklet provides one page for each move (Pre-Pre through Senior) with points on Focus, Errors and Expectations. Dance Booklet The complete dance booklet provides one page for each dance (Preliminary through Gold) with points on Expectations, Checks and Major Errors
5 Materials Purchasing Information Ratings Guide to Sample Questions The Ratings Guide gives examples of questions similar to those given in Oral Ratings Exams. A guide can be purchased for each discipline and includes questions from the Registered to the Master Level. Also included are exam candidate requirements and question categories. Note: The guide is not the only part to a complete study program for Oral Ratings exams. Coaches Guide to Sport Science and Medicine The guide is used as both a study guide for sport science exams and as an any-time reference. This manual is a complete guide for coaches. Topics include: Sport Medicine, Strength Training, Conditioning, Biomechanics, Psychology and Nutrition. The guide can be used to prepare for levels Registered through Master Sport Science and Medicine exams. Audio and Video Tapes Moves in the Field VHS or DVD Set Presentation Videos These instructional videos cover all moves from Pre-Pre to Senior showing demonstrations as well as teaching tips. It is available in either DVD or VHS format. Videos are available from past International Conference speakers on various topics including Skating Fundamentals, Choreography, Spins, Jumps, MIF, Synchro, Pairs, Sport Psychology and more. Presentation Audiocassettes Program Planner Audiocassettes are available from past International Conferences on a wide variety of topics including Synchro, Group Instruction, Program Administration, Dance, Choreography, Spins, Jumps, Strength and Conditioning, MIF and more. CD-ROM This CD-ROM assists coaches in planning competitive programs using the new ISU Judging System. It provides coaches the opportunity to determine levels and strategy in order to attain the highest scores possible for their skaters. Included in the package is the CD-ROM and a manual.
